-Our Intro Song "Feel the Love" From Alex's band
open.spotify.c...
Anddd there goes the top of Alex’s head...! Lol cheers guys this was AWESOME!! Where do we go from here?! 🙌🏻🔥
First place you go is to the Woodstock movie and watch the REAL live version of this song. Then you want to check out Joe's version of "The Letter"...another cover version that he did better than the original.
Joe Cockers version of The Letter live
He really is better live. May I suggest Delta Lady, Cry Me A River, Feelin'Alright all from the same concert album as this.
Woodstock.
Absolutely need to do The Letter, brilliant. Also you are so beautiful, it's soulful. Its my husband and mine wedding dance song!
It’s as if everyone involved realised they were now part of history. One of the greatest live performances of all time 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
There aren't many who've covered a Beatles tune and made it better. This is one of those rare cases. RIP Joe.
And RIP Leon....
I agree that Joe made the song better, but in all fairness, he basically made it almost a whole new song. The real achievement is to do a song in a similar way to the original artist but made your version better. This is extremely hard to do.
@@maryk446 But the Beatles felt that his version was better, and said it was now Joe's song. Saw him at the Gorge, opening for Tom Petty. Joe was amazing.
@@fridaylong2812 that must have been incredible. Wow, what an experience.
John Farnham, “Help”
Hi guys 67 year old woman here from Sheffield where Joe was born and where all my elder brothers and sisters used to watch him perform in all the local pubs/bars before he was famous, what a legend just a great guy
Sheffield here too, I'm 70 y.o. Loved Joe from the first time I heard him.
This was Joe Cocker and the mad dogs and Englishmen Saw them way back when
His Woodstock performance of this is, hands down, my favorite version of this song!
One of the most epic live performances ever!
The Woodstock version has the best scream in ANY song.
@@lhcarter That scream is epic!
To each his on, the backup band and singers on Woodstock could not hold a light to the Shelter People on their best day. This perfromance is my fav hands down because of Leon and he Shelter People wall of sound.
@@lhcarter Merry Clayton on Gimmie Shelter is also pretty iconic scream.
Joe is not intoxicated here he just feels the music with his entire body.
Looks like he's feeling it with his bladder 😆💦
It's his way...just like in Woodstock. I was so young then and thought he was high but no....he's just being JOE!
Sorry no…but Joe Cocker was well into snorting heroin & coke (no needles) and heavy drinking on this tour. (well documented) He got off heroin in 1973 but remained a full blown alcoholic for a long time after.
He was on a cocktail of serious drugs here. Shame, he was handed this stuff constantly, the tour was a nonstop drug trip. The fact that he didnt OD on this tour can only be due to his Welsh coal miner background. So glad he stayed around.
@@rochellezimmerbishop4681 So that's what was going on. I can never watch him when I listen. His physical dysfunction is too painful to watch.
Legendary contributors: Leon Russll on guitar, Chris Stainton on keys and Bobby Keys on Sax. all legends. Stainton still on tour with Eric Clapton 50 years on.
Don’t forget both Jims (Gordon and Keltner) on drums!
And Jim Horn also on sax! Claudia Lennear, Kathy McDonald, Rita Coolidge & Don Preston on BGV & the S on Joe's shirt? Upside down Superman logo inside an egg, logo for Leon Russell's Shelter Records. (until the logo police made Leon change it)
@@TulsaGirlForever And Carol Kaye on bass.
Leon Russell on guitar, Jim Gordon and Jim keltner on drums. Carl radle on bass. This is a hell of a band. Bobby keys on sax. What you have here is half of Derek and the dominos Jim Gordon and carl Radle. Also a background vocalist is Rita Coolidge.
@@blowzo1998 Carl radle played bass, the great musician from Tulsa.
That scream! He pulled out his own appendix, stuffed it back in, and kept on singing. Magnificent.
When the guest guitar player (in the studio version) is Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin and that's not even the main appeal of the song, you know it's some next level stuff.
Joe Cockers version of The Letter is also amazing..
Fantastic, fantastic, the fabulous Joe Cocker. A completely unique artist.
Joe Cocker and Leon Russell. How could it go wrong?❤️❤️
Paul McCartney said he would be forever grateful to Joe Cocker for taking that song and turning it into a soul anthem.
My mom met him when my cousin was dying in a hospital in Atlanta. Her husband was in the music industry. He was a caring and wonderful man who was born with a birth defect that affected his arms. Sadly, his son was born with severe birth defects. Loved this man and this song!!
He felt the music to his very core. That’s music my friend
His live performance are stuff of legend even when into his 60’s. He sung with his whole body not just his voice. “You’re so beautiful “ and “ Delta lady” are absolute musts 🔥🔥🔥
The band leader was Leon Russell, a legend in his own right, and almost every member of the band was already or would become legendary. Included were future members of Derek and the Dominoes and the core players on George Harrison's All Things Must Pass album.
When did you last hear a voice as distinctive and emotive as that?
No auto tune. Has anyone come along in the last 40.years? No.
Tracy Chapman
I can do it, one time.
The great story about Maddogs and Englishman is that Joe got to America without a band. Leon Russell put together and rehearsed a group of all stars on the fly. A cast of legends.
Leon Russell accompanying Joe on guitar! #Legends.
The drummer was the youngest on the Woodstock Festival. He played with Carlos Santana. Hola desde CHIHUAHUA MEXICO.
I agree he's not intoxicated. Even the Beatles said this was his song after hearing him. He also had a keen ear for timing and key.
Saw Joe 5 times live. First was his Mad Dogs and Englishmen Tour in 1970. Unforgettable experience, it was truly a celebration of the joy of music. I miss him.
I saw joe in the montreal forum in 1990 with stevie ray vaughn who died within two weeks there was no head liner they played for over six hours love joe God bless his soul and stevie it was amazing and don't forget you are so beautiful and countless others great show I will remember forever
He took a Beatles song, and turned it inside out into a blues song and made it his own!
There is nothing more intriguing than the opening line
SHE CAME IN THROUGH THE BATHROOM WINDOW....
He had cerebral pacey. My mom met him when my 1st cousin was dying in the hospital out of state. Her husband was in the music industry. His son was born with serious health problems. He was and is an amazing man.
no he did not have palsy
I love this performance, more so than the Woodstock one. The backing vocals are woeful at Woodstock. This had a great ensemble, and looking at young Rita Coolidge is always fun.
The backing girl singers at Woodstock got stuck in the traffic, so the band had to do it themselves.
@@bobtheteddybear I think they did a fine job.
Woodstock version is the best.
Joe covering Feelin Alright is a great listen.
There's covering a song and doing a good job, then there's covering a song and twisting it and making it their own, and thats what Joe did with this
Had a huge crush on Leon Russell, the piano player on the top hat
In Sir Paul McCartney's own words John and I wrote it Joe Cocker owned it, the Woodstock version is the definitive version and better than this, but wow Joe Cocker is just amazing with this , brilliant is an understatement.
Woodstock is not better than this. Much better backing singers and instrumentation.
@@malcolmbrown7683 I think Joes vocal performance at Woodstock is better.
I would vote for the version on Mad Dog and Englishmen as the definitive version. CORRECTION! What, nobody was going to call me out? This wasn't on Mad Dogs, although that's a brilliant live album, 1970 at Fillmore East! I must be thinking of Woodstock, my personal favorite, despite backup vocals lacking a little bit.
Woodstock version all day long
Wonder what Woodstock would have been if the ladies could have got there to do the backing vocals. The falsettos of the string section wouldn't be there and what else would have changed
I saw Cocker with Leon Russell. A killer show.
He's not intoxicated, guys -- That's how he ALWAYS looks when he's in the middle of a concert and swept up in the music.
No he was intoxicated, Cocker was like drunk for 40 years and I mean daily.
Joe Cocker Could Take Someone Else’s song and
make it his own !
Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour with Leon Russell and the band that recorded Layla with Eric Clapton...and those that didn't work on Layla recorded All Things Must Pass with George Harrison...incredible talent on that stage!!! Two drummers, Jim Gordon and Jim Keltner
Best band name ever..... Apparently the tour was one wild party.
The Woodstock version may be one of the best live stage performances of any song ever!!
Except for the non existent backing singers, if my memory serves me well....
@@moirabaker458 Yup. His band did the backup vocals and couldn't hit the high notes. That's part of the charm of it.
One very special era in time. Joe Cocker, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison. True originals. Not overly produced. Pretty great stuff.
One of the drummers, Jim Gordon, wrote and performed the Coda at the end of Layla. He has been incarcerated in a mental hospital for many years after killing his Mother.
The Shelter People years with Mad Dogs and Englishmen Leon Russell and Rita Coolidge on vocals. Both 1970s heavy hitters.
The man was a force of nature... Just great. Fully deserving of the S tier. Someone else has suggested Delta Lady as your next Joe Cocker song and I would heartily second that..
I was 15 when I bought this single in 1968. It was and still is a classic cover. Joe makes it his own!
Great reaction. Joe always blew the roof off. The drummer with the afro was the drummer for Derek and the Dominos. Leon Russell was on guitar. Skunk Baxter or sax. What a show. Watch his rendition of The Letter.
Checkout “The Letter” covered by Cocker. BANGER!!!
Mad Dogs and Englishmen is still my all time favorite Rock and Roll movie.
Joe does some Banger live performances....especially : The Letter, Hitchcock Railway and Feeling Alright. Next Level stuff
As someone once said "if you can remember the sixties your weren't reeally there!" RIP Joe.
That's glib BS. I lived it and remember it well. The sixties help define my whole future.
Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Joe Cocker made this his signature song, poured his heart and soul into every performance of this song for the rest of his life. R.I.P.
Joe Cocker also covered :She came in to the bathroom window " from the Beatles (Abbey Road). Also a great cover!
And Something
Leon Russell. So missed. Saw him last at a small supper club a few months before he died. I sat ten feet away with a great angle to see his hands on the piano and a side view of his face. I think he sang every song he ever wrote. And told stories in between each song. It was incredible: I hadn’t seen him since George Harrison’s fundraiser for Bangladesh (1971!). He died in 2016.
The legendary Leon Russell in the blue top hat playing guitar.
Got to see Joe in concert back in 1990. Co-headlining tour with some guy you may have heard of; none other than Stevie Ray Vaughan. The greatest show I have ever seen!
I never saw this particular version, his friends are Leon Russell on guitar with "his Family" as he referred to his band mates. The best performance I think is still the Woodstock version. For a laugh you guys should check out vintage Saturday Night Live with John Belushi impersonating him. IT IS THE BEST!!!
The late John Belushi did an incredible impression of him (and of Roy Orbison) on "Saturday Night Live".
Wonder Years guys...JC was phenomenal
Joe Cocker is just feeling the music. That's all.
God I miss Joe Cocker. What a unique talent. I wouldn't trade the music of my youth for a billion dollars.
OMG lads ......so glad you are diving into the legends 😍 Joe did an epic performance at Woodstock x
"I got a letter for my Fred". It's in there. Great reaction.
That's Joe for ya, the man was phenomenal.
His voice is unique, his shows are amazing and his persona captivating.
And yes, to me the same notion, this song is one of those rare occasions where the cover beats the original.
And of all artists out there, to out-do the original... he outdid the freakin Beatles... that's like... i dunno.. god-tier levels?
Thnx for the react guys :D
This version is better than the original indeed! Thanks guys, been waiting for this! Whiskey time...
Joe Cocker, getting by with a little help from his friends!
The whole of the Mad Dogs tour is worth listening to.
Leon Russell...what a cat!
Yes, all of the Mad Dogs and Englishmen! Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge, et. al!
This version is so iconic to the end of the 60s. It was used as the theme to the TV show "The Wonder Years".
I hesitate to comment since your reaction was three years ago; however, my first time with Joe Cocker's performance was in the movie Woodstock. I saw it in the early 70's and I was blown away. A fan ever since! Your reaction was to the one from the Mad Dogs and Englishmen concert. A massive undertaking to help Joe pay a few bills. He looked pretty f'd up just before he opened his mouth to sing, but he sure brought it. I saw him twice, once in 75 and again a couple of years before he died. Love ya, Joe. RIP
The down and dirty version from the mighty Joe. No further words necessary.💪🏻🥂
I actually saw them perform at a small college in Pa in 1970, it was
Such a great concert. Saw Joe again in the 80's at the Warner theatre in DC another intimate venue. Joe is one of my favorite
Performers ever
It’s just so visceral - what a performance
Just a few bits of info on Joe... Legend has it that he downed almost an entire bottle of Irish whiskey over the course of every show but it never affected his performance. Later in life he quit drinking and became a teetotaller. He grew up in the working class county of Sheffield which is in South Yorkshire. He worked as a gravedigger and a plumber to make a living because he didn't finish school. He was obsessed with 'The Beatles" and played their albums incessantly. It was when he sang along to the songs that he first realised he could actually sing, albeit with a bluesey growl. He covered various Beatles songs such as
1. "She Came in Through the
Bathroom Window"
2. "I'll Cry Instead"
3. "Something"
4. "With a Little Help from my
Friends"
5. "Let it Be"
6. "You've Got to Hide Your Love
"Away"
7. "Come Together" (My personal favourite. His version is incredible and he totally made that song his own). His performance at Woodstock singing "With a Little Help from my Friends" was unforgettable. It made him a soul/blues/R&B legend.
Joe made a cameo appearance as the character "Mr. Kite" in the movie based on the music of "The Beatles" entitled "Across the Universe". He sang the song "Come Together".
The dude in the top hat that appears in this video is his long time collaborator Leon Russell. Russell usually played keyboards but sometimes played guitar as well. He did most of the musical arrangements for the songs, giving them an entirely new sound. The two of them seemed to be able to communicate almost via osmosis on stage. It was uncanny how in sync they were with each other. A few of Joe's other songs I highly recommend you listen to are...
"Marjorine"
"Delta Lady"
"The Letter"
(Russell's keyboards (piano) in this song are amazing and the sax is to die for)
"Feelin' Alright"
and my personal all-time favourite Joe Cocker song..."Cry me a River". If you can listen to that song and not feel like tappin' your toes, snappin' your fingers and bangin' your head... please check your pulse.
Everything the singer had learned from Ray Charles’s records, and his native Sheffield’s pub circuit, went into alchemising Ringo Starr’s amiable version on Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band into a soul-blues classic. Backed by his road-hardened Grease Band, Cocker appeared possessed by the song, roaring it with a gravel-rough voice, his hands shaking at his side, and his body spasming.
To be fair, that way of "dancing" wasn't just with this song, it was just the way Joe "danced".
You would really enjoy seeing the movie made of this concert tour, Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Every performance is incredible.
Seeing this I think you can understand how this was the " Mad Dogs and English man " tour .. great band and a unique vocal talent!
So glad you let it play through without stopping it all the time.
Watch the entire Mad Dogs and Englishmen DVD. It is fantastic.
This is magnificent - there’s no other word for it.
Guys. The band...actually everyone on stage were famous front other bands. They got together for this tour. First instance the guy in the top hat and band leader was Leon Russell. They came together to play music and tour.
Also you have to admire Joe Cocker as he was struck down with polio at about ten i believe, he was from Sheffield Yorkshire England, and became a nation legend
Correct! My home town.
Spot on, 👌🏻
@@jonnyenglish2701 Mine too
He never had polio???????
@@gerarddekovel9324 I saw tgat comment too, and thought the same, he never had polio. I know Ian Drury, did, 👍🏻
Check out Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Great Album by the late greats Joe Cocker and Leon Russel
Andy's Facial Expression toward the end was priceless.
Absolutely S Tier! Glad you guys recognized that.
Check out High time we went she came in through the bathroom window you can keep your hat on up Where We Belong and so many many other great songs rest in peace Joe you gave us so much fantastic music thank you forever
Thank you! Thid was the theme song to the show Wonder Years. I loved it, but had no idea who sang it.
Notice how he emulates playing every instrument...because he's so deep in the music.
One of the greatest
Jim Keltner on Drums, Leon Russel on Guitar, Nicky Hopkins Keyboards , Rita Coolidge one of the many back up singers. A Star studded line- up that toured.
Jim Gordon on drums as well. His girlfriend was Rita Coolidge who he stole the second half of Layla from.
@@Paul197A Yes Jim Gordon he worked on All Things Must Pass with George Harrison
Wow, I was waiting for this reaction. Ray Charles' favourite singer!
He did another great Beatles cover of "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window", so you might want to hit that one. I'm glad you did this version - there's also a Woodstock performance that's well-regarded, but this has by far the better background vocals.
Another Woodstock alum is part of that musical experience -- the drummer with the tight Afro is Michael Shrieve, who played that iconic drum solo on Santana's "Soul Sacrifice.
Some great musicians there -
I very rarely watch a video that outright makes me smile. This was one of them. That whole vibe takes me back to a great time in my youth. It was great seeming Leon Russell with the top hat, on the guitar
Leon Russel in the top hat... This is off the "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" album, I think...
From the movie about this wonderful tour,Mad Dogs and English men! There's Rita Coolidge, Leon Russell so many greats. If anyone can find that Documentary movie, your in for a wonderful experience.
That entire stage is occupied by legends.
Put his heart, soul, his socks and bottom of his boots into that one, real class act Joe was.
Check out Joes performance at woodstock.
Crazy Englishman.
And what an arrangement by the guitarist Leon Russell.
Joe had so much soul, You Are So Beautiful is a classic and Up Where We Belong, Joe's duet with Jennifer Warnes is another classic.
Not to mention Delta Lady, You Can Leave Your Hat On, When A Woman Loves A Man. So many to choose from. I love his version of She Came In Through The Bathroom Window as well.
Joe Cocker - Feelin’ Alright. Banger
This one just gives me a glow. It always has.
Feeling Alright is a great song
