  • WHAT YOU DO: An actor plays characters in radio shows, videos, plays and musicals, TV series, and movies.
EDUCATION: Studying acting in college or training at an acting conservatory can help develop your skills, but agents and casting directors don't care nearly as much about education as they do about experience.
USEFUL SKILLS: Research skills, communication skills, flexibility, creativity, and self-confidence. You have to be willing to work hard, prepared to deal with anything (especially rejection), and able to bring something new to each role.
HOW TO GET IN: Start with small acting jobs, like roles in independent or student films. Keep in mind most of the jobs for actors are in New York City and Los Angeles, so it's probably a good idea to get over to one of those areas.
CAREER PATH: Start with small acting jobs and build a good reputation and on-camera resume by consistently putting on good performances. This will help you get auditions for bigger parts, which will help get you noticed. Then you can work your way up to high-profile roles.
PAYBACK: The money an actor makes depends on the amount and type of work you do. Some actors have to find part-time jobs to make ends meet, some are able to sustain themselves with various small roles, and the ones who make it big rarely have to worry about money.
DOWNSIDES: Job uncertainty, lots of competition. If you're going to be an actor, you have to be ready to deal with lots of failure before finding success.
FUTURE OF JOBS: The number of jobs is expected to grow 3-9% during the 2010-20 decade, which is slower than average. As always, directors are constantly looking for new actors to play small parts, but there aren't a lot of openings for big-time actors.
NETWORKING: The SAG-AFTRA Union provides information and opportunities for actors: www.sagaftra.org/
