I'm with a Housing Association, I phoned them regarding a replacement small window, very much like yours in the video, the estimated cost (so it could be more), quoted to me was . . . £133. So having watched your video, it's a 'no brainer' as to what my solution will be. Thanks UHM.
It's really difficult on a small window like the one in this video, larger windows are much easier as the longer beads bend more easily. Glad you got it sorted ;-) Thanks for the comment
I did removed the broken glass and then I replace with new glass on insulated window. Save time and money than ordering for another new insulation window unit. It work great.
Very handy to know as I been asked to replace one and I had a feeling on how but now watching your video I feel like I can do this and do it well and it be something els I can add to me knowledge of things I can do for customers Thank you for your help I really have likes the unique way you do your videos
Nice , that glass is called cotswold , patterned glass to the inside unless its low E glass then the pattern will go to the outside . You can measure without taking out if you have the right tools however for a diyer best to remove and check . Best tool ive found for removal is a beehive tool believe it or not available on ebay
Thank you, I found the inside glass in our cloakroom smashed tonight. Wondered how it had happened, thanks to your other video, I now know and thanks to this one, I will be able to change it myself 😊
Thanks again. And a note - lots of echo in your audio, especially when you are in rooms with parallel concrete walls. Simply hang one or two bath towels on the wall or place them near the mic to cut down on reverb. It will really make your audio pop!
Just a quick comment regarding the right way around the glass goes.Any glass unit after 2002 has k glass so the clear bit should go to the inside and the obscure glass goes to the outside but windows older than 2002 then it goes which way you like, hope this helps
Fantastic info as always! I have some double glazing that the council is dragging its heels on getting sorted, so I may very well get some quotes and tackle those myself, with approval from them of course ;) Thanks for this surprisingly simple guide, I'm pleased I'm subscribed
A unit that size is priced on minimum area standard industry practice is 0.25 of square meter , its actually cheeper for a unit than to buy 2 separate pieces of glass . Also a unit that size takes less than 5 mins to make , and the time depends on how busy the glass merchants are. There is defiantly no standard sizes of glass when it comes to double glazed units
Nice video, I once had to install a tiny cloakroom window, was a nightmare to get the beads in as they had very little flex. Got there in the end though!
It’s much more difficult with wood windows. You have to carefully remove the wooden beading, without splitting it. The beading is often pinned in position using panel pins.
Hi Fella, probably the best video example out there. Is there a standard way you can measure the glass unit without taking it out. I'm a plumber, but the firm somtimes askes me to measure up for glass on upvc emergency jobs that then gets subbed out. so I measure bead crack to bead crack and take 6mm off each edge, would that work for all upvc units? ie 1000x1000 bead crack would be 988x988 unit ordered. thenks for your help mate.
Thanks, I'm not sure to be honest. I always remove the beading and measure the glass to be on the safe side. I've not done a lot of glazing and can count the number of units I have replaced on one hand. If you ask at the place where you get your double glazed units from, they should know (Hopefully) Thanks for the comment
Super video and great explanation, as always. Give this man a TV slot. Please where do you order the replacement panes from and are there set sizes to buy off the shelf? Many thanks..
I don't think you can buy them in standard sizes. I normally go to a glazing company to buy them, they normally make the panes to size. Thanks for the comment 👍
It depends where you live. I use Blackburn Ribble Glass in Blackburn! Any local double glazing firms should be able to supply one. Thanks for the comment 👍
I managed to get the 4 beading trims off but the double glazed unit will not come out as it is stuck on very well with that black double sided security tape. I have used a wooden wedge type tool to lever on the unit but it will not budge, any advice?
I don't suppose you have any glass lifters (suction type), you could stick two of them on to get more leverage. If the window is at floor level, perhaps get someone to gently push on it from the outside? Thanks for the comment
Thanks for the reply. The window is externally beaded and it is on the 1st floor, I do not have any glass lifters or anyone to push on the window. I was wondering if there was a small tool I could use to cut the tape from the glass.
Great video, thanks for sharing your knowledge. I will shortly be replacing two large-ish panels in my conservatory after getting quotes of £350 when the glass panels themselves cost a mere £65
I'm glad the video helped. It's always much more expensive when you get someone to do the work, as they have a lot of overheads (training/insurance/vehicle costs/tax/etc.), and sometimes people just try to rip you off! Thanks for the comment 👍
And here was me thinking I would need a complete new window as same happened to me a few weeks ago will any glazier be able to order the sizes or would it be a case of calling and getting them to come out size and fit
It depends how good you are at measuring. If you order the incorrect size you will end up paying for the unit twice. As long as you measure the unit accurately there should not be a problem.
Another good video. I'm curious as to why it took a week to get the new glass. Are they not standard sizes and readily available? As always good solid info.
The last unit I had made took about a week. This one was only about 3 days, I guess it depends how busy the glaziers are at the time. I don't think any double glazed units come in standard sizes, which is why it takes a while. You can also get different thickness spacer bars for between the glass. Thanks for the comment
with all the houses, all the frame styles, all the glass types, widths, i guess there is no standard size, there comes a point when it takes up less space and stock issues to be able to make a unit from standard parts (large glass panels etc). one day when they can 3d print anything, nothing will be a stock item!
Ultimate Handyman generally if i order a toughened unit it is 4 to 5 days and normal annealed glass units in about 3 but i have mannaged to get toughened the next day in the past.
Hi brother, very helpful video indeed, thanks 👍🏼. I have a few questions, what are the name of the tools you used in this video please, and did you physically take your window unit to get measured or did you just call/email the glazer?
I used the Purdy scraper- fave.co/2WItLuO And plastic trim removal tools- fave.co/2K0gS9k I removed the unit, then carefully measured it. I then replaced the old unit and ordered one from the glaziers. Thanks for the comment
@@ultimatehandyman Cool stuff 👍🏼. Which glazers would you recommend to order from Budd, in your experience regarding good customer service and quality products, would eBay, amazon, etc be any good you reckon?
No, there is no sealant used. There is a rubber/neoprene like seal attached to the beading, which creates a seal against the glass. Thanks for the comment 👍
Thanks Jason, my mate uses BRG but it's a bit out of my way which is why I used Mayfield glass as it is quite literally around the corner from where I work.

Nice one. This is a job I'm going to have to tackle soon, but your video has shown me how easy it should be. Thanks.
You are welcome

Cheers mate. I wasn't too sure how much to bend the bottom bead. I'm all done now.
It's really difficult on a small window like the one in this video, larger windows are much easier as the longer beads bend more easily.

I have two windows in a wooden frame that have blown. Any ideas on the procedure / tools needed for wood frames please?
It’s much more difficult with wood windows. You have to carefully remove the wooden beading, without splitting it. The beading is often pinned in position using panel pins.
how about taking out a 8" square unit with equal length beads all round..very tight with little bend on the beads ???
well done, youve inspired me to have a go myself.
Thanks, best of luck with yours ;-)

Hi, what do you do if the lock clashes with the keep?
You can normally adjust the keep 👍
Thanks mate. Same theory with aluminium frame?
I'm not sure, sorry.
I have not seen aluminium framed windows since I was a kid- about 40 years ago 🤔
Hello! How is this done with wooden double glazed windows? How to get the moldings out?
I'm afraid you have to use a hammer and chisel, or thin-bladed screwdriver to carefully remove the wooden beading.
Thanks for the comment 👍
thanks for sharing

They can be difficult, perhaps get a glass lifter (suction pads) and stick them to the window?

£15 isn't bad at all
Good Information. :)
I was surprised how inexpensive the unit was!

It was brand new and made to order.

just used my snapp toggles to hang a rad. 👍

Always remove longer ones first they have more flex and start with short when replacing
Thanks for the tip ;-)
...and my mate at BRG will sort your glass for you ;)
Thanks Jason, my mate uses BRG but it's a bit out of my way which is why I used Mayfield glass as it is quite literally around the corner from where I work.
I would have boarded it, save putting the broken pane back in.
hi
Put :(Part 1of 2), in your titles next time.
I really thought you wasted my time on the last video.
I did say in the video that the next video would show how to replace the unit ;-)
then don't bother watching then! try to be more polite to people going to a lot of time making these kind of videos !
