LaBlobb Here, I'll save you the bother and share my comment directly to you haha. I warn you it's long because I discuss into things! My old (SATA) Samsung Evo 850 has met it's match by a game.... Kingdom Come Deliverance! In the more busy towns I get bloody loading screens that actually take a little bit when I make my character wash him self off in a trough.... (Gotta stay clean in this game or people won't respect you!) Heaven forbid running this game on even my higher performance hard drive...... This game would of made a great test I feel! Because till now, every game I bothered to put on this SSD because I was noticing annoying load times it handled without any issues and it's an old school SATA drive from 7+ years ago! The next generation of games is coming with the next gen consoles that all will have higher performance SSD's! Soon I feel SSD will become more mandatory.... A game like Doom tho I'd gladly would of just left on my Toshiba X300 HDD..... Waiting a little longer for a level to load in is no big deal.... Loading times popping up in the middle of an open world game, or seeing pop in that could perhaps be caused by a slower speed drive.... anything like that..... Unacceptable! So they go on my SSD..... My next build will have a Samsung EVO 970 M.2 drive (When I got the extra cash) I really look forward to seeing the difference it will make on Kingdom Come Deliverance! The old Evo 850 will be retired to be 100% my "fast" gaming drive. With the Evo 970 being my OS drive, and reserved for the most demanding games! (Same role the old Evo 850 has done for 7+ years) Also FUCK DRAMless SSD's! GARBAGE! Replaced a failed old higher end SanDIsk SSD with DRAM, with a Kingston A400, on a first gen I5 laptop..... Yes I noticed a huge difference running windows on it! Didn't think it would matter since the laptop was so old..... But the DRAMless A400 acts as a bottleneck now! Better then a HDD...... Maybe kinda yes.... The difference was surprisingly huge! (100% done as experiment!) Now.... On that topic.... I wonder how important DRAM is on a SSD for games! Loading the data in the game I assume is more of a straight and easy to follow path, cache won't be used as MUCH as vs running Windows..... (Extreme multi tasking) Of course cache will help! But I think that would be an interesting comparison! Because I wonder in this SSD based future for games if I can save a few bucks on a DRAMless SSD for SOME modern games. (I'm sure Kingdom Come would make the A400 it's bitch......) So I do mean SOME....
@@TheIdleCrow Ye open world games are really nice to have on an SSD. When I have bought my first SSD, I noticed a huge performance improvement even in Diablo 3 (and in system boot time, of cause). It was interesting to notice, that even with a game with small maps is going to profit from an SSD. Some question about my setup and how to improve it: I have two SSDs in my current system, but want to upgrade to 970 evo just for games and applications. My concern is if there are some disadvantages using multiple SSDs in a single system. Since I don't want to throw away my old SSDs (128GB Samsung 850PRO and 500GB Samsung 850EVO) my plan is the following setup: 850PRO -> For Windows and drivers 850EVO -> For Downloads and other temporary stuff 970EVO plus (1tb) -> For games and appications In theory this should give me the maximum performance out of these drives. The system will be using different interfaces to access data either for windows/drivers or games/applications or other data, which should cause less load on each of them. This is just the idea. Don't know if this gonna work or even make any difference in performance. Never seen some tests on such a setup. But this seems the best usage of the old SSDs to me if I will buy that new sexy NVME drive. Anybody has some other useful ideas. Because I will put the 970EVO into my system anyway, just still want to have some meaningful usage of my old SSDs.
@@leblobb Wouldn't have imagined performance games in Diablo 3, it still sits on one of my HDD's not even my best HDD! Now onto your question, I have never heard of any disadvantage to having multiple SSD's. The only real disadvantage of an SSD in general is they can only re write data so many times compared to a hard drive. But its starting to become less and less of an issue as they advance even more so with the front runners like Samsung! So in theory if you loaded up one of your SSD's with games and never changed (delete and replace) things and kept it more less the same the SSD should last you "forever". My opinion is the Evo 970 should be used for your windows Install, It has crazy high performance being a NVMe drive! Its far faster then all your older drives, and will see the most benefit behind Windows it self plus games. (Plenty of space for both, just put the most demanding games on it) This drive also has a crazy rewrite lifespan of up to 1,200 TBW! compared to the 850 EVO of 75 TBW! The difference is night and day now! With these new SSD's I wouldn't be surprised if they can out live a HDD since they got no moving parts! So EVO 970 100% use it for Windows! & the most demanding games! I wouldn't use any of your old SSD's for downloads and temporary stuff because of there limited rewrite life spans.... Just get a cheap 1tb HDD and keep that in there for temp stuff! Perfectly fine for pictures and videos and such. I would use both the 850 Pro and the 850 EVO for games! If you leave your games on your drives like I do, they would hopefully last "forever" in quotes because I know nothing lasts forever. Best use for them! So my conclusion is don't worry about the EVO 970, it's a kick ass drive and is your best option to handle both Windows, and Games. Because of its long rewrite life, and ultra high performance!

My old (SATA) Samsung Evo 850 has met it's match by a game.... Kingdom Come Deliverance!
In the more busy towns I get bloody loading screens that actually take a little bit when I make my character wash him self off in a trough....
(Gotta stay clean in this game or people won't respect you!)
Heaven forbid running this game on even my higher performance hard drive......
(Same role the old Evo 850 has done for 7+ years)
Also FUCK DRAMless SSD's! (100% done as experiment!)
Now....

Ye open world games are really nice to have on an SSD.
When I have bought my first SSD, I noticed a huge performance improvement even in Diablo 3 (and in system boot time, of cause).
It was interesting to notice, that even with a game with small maps is going to profit from an SSD.
Some question about my setup and how to improve it:
I have two SSDs in my current system, but want to upgrade to 970 evo just for games and applications.
My concern is if there are some disadvantages using multiple SSDs in a single system. Since I don't want to throw away my old SSDs (128GB Samsung 850PRO and 500GB Samsung 850EVO) my plan is the following setup:
850PRO -> For Windows and drivers
850EVO -> For Downloads and other temporary stuff
970EVO plus (1tb) -> For games and appications
In theory this should give me the maximum performance out of these drives.
My opinion is the Evo 970 should be used for your windows Install,
It has crazy high performance being a NVMe drive! Its far faster then all your older drives, and will see the most benefit behind Windows it self plus games. (Plenty of space for both, just put the most demanding games on it)
This drive also has a crazy rewrite lifespan of up to 1,200 TBW! compared to the 850 EVO of 75 TBW!

Agreed! At least as a sanity check to make sure one really was slower than the other.
I used nvme SSD for almost 2 years, R/R speed was ~3000 MB/s. Then I switched back to SATA 3 SSD, because of the size. Yes, I noticed the difference instantly, little slower W10 boot, slower map loading, slower browser loading too. BUT! After a couple of days, the difference vanished (yes, only in my mind), I feel my system is fast enough. So the price what really matters here! Switching from a HDD to an SSD is a miracle, but from SATA 3 to an nvme is not a big deal, but a big price.
Thank you bro, you actually somehow gave me some confidence
My wallet thanks you😊. Just look at that happy little anthromorphised face~
@bruh For modern games, the difference in load times is brutal. By the way, check out an RDR2 or Forza Horizon 5 title on HDD... hell. The latter in particular tells you pretty quickly that the backing is too slow, which can cause rendering problems. HDD for modern gaming is a very very no go zone.
@@TinmanHU not just load times, your drive can be slow enough that it won't be able to keep up and you'll have terrible texture loading, bad frames ect
@@TinmanHU Tested RDR2 on an Evo 970 m.2 SSD vs a 7200rpm HD and yeah the difference was very noticeable on both load times and game play 😱
Yeah, no surprise. Gamers are like wine “connoisseurs” who pay >$200 for a bottle of wine and can’t tell the difference by taste between that and a $20 bottle.
well yeah but the bragging rights get you mad pussy
Just like the guitar industry, car industry, pretty much any industry. Maybe its time to admit that we consumers are a problem since we end up buying this shit. And you bet your ass the companies know this.

I’d be interested in seeing optane put into the mix, since it excels with low queue depths and smaller file sizes.
~1.7 seconds faster in Final Fantasy 14 loading benchmark compared to a Samsung 970 Pro. Tweaktown compared a ton of SSDs.
High quality video. Linus does it so we don’t have to.
This is exactly what I was looking for. The blind test is perfect for getting a gauge if an upgrade will be noticable or not.
Would have been better to have them start the system from scratch though. Windows loading in 5 seconds vs 15 to 30 makes a big difference too.

I remember that Linus recently said, that IOPs is what really matters when it comes to real world performance.
ApxuBbI I’m pretty sure the most important stat for SSD’s is IOP Random Read at Q depth 1. This stat is often hard to find because its not sexy, it gives the lowest numbers of all of the stats but at the end of the day its the one you will notice in regards to hitches and load times.
Yes it's more important than sequential typically, but ssds are generally good enough with random iops that it doesn't matter much either
@@WARnTEA this is true
Adata SX8200 pro is the winner in that department, well the samsung 970 pro is up there too but it costs more then the Adata.
There hasn’t been a big jump in 4K random since HDD to SSD, so I’d really like to see a PCIe RAM drive like the old DDR1 RAM drive in multichannel, except DDR4 is much faster and efficient. Or maybe some sort of SRAM cache drive.
This made me feel a lot better about buying a SATA III SSD when there is newer stuff on the market. Can't wait to finally upgrade from an HDD!
As i were still using a HDD.
Friends: "Dude.. you are so last gen. Get an SSD."
Years after i finally had an SSD.
Linus: "SSD's are so last gen."
Me now after thinking about getting a new system with newer SSD tech.
Linus: "That tech is so last gen."
Me: "Kill me now."
Welcome to the tech industry. Get the parts you need that will get the job done and ignore the newest hottest tech.
That's why I just went ahead and got PCIe gen 4 drive.
I know "future proof" isn't a real thing, but I wanted to be as close to it as I could get so I don't need an upgrade for at least a few years.
I still use HDDS for long term storage. Or big files like my movie and music library. Ssd for gaming amd os
The best thing about diminishing returns is that last gen is still pretty fuckin good
There is still a big difference when talking HDD to SSD...

2.5" vs M.2 - no cable clutter, this is really where it's at
SATA M.2 exists
That's the entire reason I saved up to go full M.2! I hated dealing with all the cables when cleaning my PC. Then I got 5 RGB fans.....
True less cables but Id say also it depends on about Which M.2 you put in which Motherboard.
What does a few cables matter? It's not like you're poking around inside your case every day.
@@Roxor128 True, but when you clean it it does get annoying having to manage them again, and SATA cables specifically were the biggest PITA for me.

Try this with the load times in a Total War game and the differences will be plain to see. Even between NVME and Gen 4.
One of the biggest reason I am thinking of upgrading my ssd is for total war lol.
I just bought warhammer 2 and haven't installed it yet. I do have a 970 EVO plus 500gb on my PCIe x4 slot and just ordered a 1 TB 970 EVO for my x2 slot. So you would advise putting total war on the first slot? And what do you think the differences might be between the two if I may ask? (ballpark would be great too!)
@Ronix 97 Alright, I think that's the x4 slot (it are PCIe 3.0 slots, unless I understood your question incorrectly [B450 Aorus elite]) , which is the fastest. Though so you think the difference between x2 and x4 is pretty large for TW games? Idk if you could give me a ballpark of loading times on these options (if you know, ofc)? I haven't played TW since Rome 2 (which I didn't like compared to the awesomeness that was/is Rome 1)
@@Sam-ko8mt th-cam.com/video/4TsMv53pg_E/w-d-xo.html You'll see even faster speeds than the PCIe SSD he uses there. And you can see there is a gap there between PCIe and SATA SSDs for Total War games, unlike the much much smaller gap for most other games.
@@StormEagle5 Alright, thanks! Yeah the thing is that my motherboard has 2 lane and 4 lane PCLe slots, (the x2 would still be like 4 times faster than SATA, theoretically - not load time) but I guess in most games it doesn't matter.
I might install the games on both drives myself to see if the diff is big or not on those slots. Though if the diff between SATA and PCLe (probably 4x) is only 12 sec (40 and 28 in the vid you shared) I guess it doesn't really matter all that much, though I'd have to see how it runs on my system.
Everyone picked #1 as fastest because it was first computer they tested.
i'm sure if 1st one is hdd and 2nd is ssd they will notice wich one fastest.. this test not for accuraccy in number but to test do you really see difference between ssd in daily use.. if you got biased just because wich one you picked 1st then in daily use faster ssd not give you much difference.. i mean if one already give you loading screen in split second, become 10x faster just reduce loading screen really few second.. can you really feel that difference without counting it? or maybe the problem is not really on your storage anymore but in another aspect of your pc and you should focus on that rather than just pursue fast ssd? software that can't utilize fast ssd maybe a thing
If that's why they picked it, then it means there's still no noticeable difference. If there was a good difference, the order wouldn't matter.
Logic -💯
@@krisyannuruha5147 For "daily" use they left out a major part, the start up time from turning it on as well. Which would be a dead giveaway instantly. Which I think is why they left that part out.

Great video. nvme drives are so fast, that the speed of the newer ones barely matters. For a pc gamer, a nvme load times in games is only 1 to 2 seconds faster than a regular ssd. Once your drive is 500 MB/s read / write speeds, it barely matters for the average user. The quality of the drive matters the most.
