i love that these warriors are faceless, helmet-wearing characters, and yet their helmets are more iconic and identifiable than any face could ever be. Solaire, Lautrec, Siegmeyer, everyone. Their helmets ARE their faces, and we know them for it.
Faces in videogames are usually shitty anyway. I think the guys at from understand this and put more personality in the armor aesthetics than most games put in the faces.
Anybody knows the name of the female npc hanging with Lautrec? I just searched the Dark Souls wiki and can't find her somehow. Never played the 1st game only know you can drop her armor in DS3. How are these guys lore related I can't find anything on Lautrec's sites :(
Watching him pick up Oscar is beautiful. Imagine the journey you would have to undertake to get back to lordran. You probably wouldn't be able to take the bird, so you go through this incredibly long journey to rescue one man who has accepted death already.
And if the devs willed it you could have been Slowly walking, keeping a man alive to guide him to his dreams... Then he stabs you in the back and calls himself the dark lord
Not a good idea.. If oscar live he will become your rival and side with either Kaathe/Framp depending your choice and opposse you. In the end you kill him yourself
2:24 is one of my favorite parts because in the lore for the darkmoon nightess she wears the armor to hid what humanity has done to her appearance. "Writhes" I believe it says. And at that point the song talks about turning scars into beauty, while lautrec is holding her. This guy really thought these scenes out and connected them to the lyrics of the song. This is a masterpiece
Germán Morago could be! I’m not too sure if she was aware of him, but in the lore for her armor set it does say it masked what humanity did to her as a fire keeper.
Where all this shiping of this two characters together come from in pruld's snimations? They have similar armour, both hold a firekeeper soul and they are both in Anor londo, that is all the conection between this 2 NPCs They never mention each other in game so i find realy fun how far this have gone.
I finally finished Dark Souls 2 without dying, now I'll do a more difficult challenge, trying to watch this video without crying Edit: Today I finally finished The Ringed City. one thing that people don't realize is that dark does not inherently mean bad Humans are born from the darkness, Humanity is a fragment of the dark soul to be a dark lord does not inherently mean to be an evil lord, it simply means that you are the lord of darkness the age of fire is the age of light, and light is not inherently good neither are truly good or bad, they are simply seen that way to usher in a dark age is to allow nature to continue, but keep in mind that the fires will always return
I would agree but in the artorias of the abyss dlc you see what happens when the age of dark occurs in oolacile brought on by "a serpent" (kaathe), and everyone mutates into gross mutant things. I believe it was due to "the dark" enhancing and corrupting the power of the piece of the dark soul in every human and causing it to mutate them out of control. its also why Manus is so huge, he was the pygmy who found the first dark soul (as he was the "primeval human") who had the biggest and most powerful piece of the dark soul which made him the biggest and most powerful corrupted human. I agree that the age of light also sucks because the only god left at that point is Gwyndolin who manipulates you with Frampt and its only prolonging the inevitable descent into the age of dark but at least people only descend slowly into madness instead of turn into gross monster things.
that only happened because of the pygmy's descent into madness when his humanity ran wild after his torture, his insanity spread throughout the abyss and touched the humanity within the denizins of oolacile, making them run wild as well. By the time of the chosen undead, Manus is dead and the only beings living in the abyss are the four kings and darkstalker kaathe, the former of which are vanquished as well, making the abyss safe to traverse. It's possible that the reason that the denizins of oolacile became those monsters was simply because of Manus's humanity running wild the age of dark is the age of men, and the abyss is a construct of darkness, meaning that humans should find no danger within or from it, unless a being that descended into madness controls it the chosen undead becoming a dark lord could very well have control over the primordial serpents of darkness and, by extension, the abyss. Depending on what you think kind of character the chosen undead is, it's safe to say that he will either use it to corrupt humans and become a tyrant, or he will ensure that it poses no threat to any of the humans
no. remember that after the fight, you can take the ring off and be perfectly fine. my theory is that either the four kings, Manus or Darkstalker Kaathe control the abyss's shadows, and can use it to attack and kill anyone they do not want in the abyss for whatever reason. Under the control of the maddened Manus, the Abyss was spreading and causing humanity to run wild. Under the control of the four kings, it destroys all who enter. Under the control of Kaathe, it is perfectly fine and safe to those who deems worthy of meeting him.
I am so fucking proud that Dark Souls is still alive. I know many people say how shitty our community is, and partially it is true, but... look at this. Four years later, people still make breath-takingly beautiful tributes for Dark Souls. Four years later, people still want more. The love this community has is so strong. Yeah, there are much nuttier, more obsessive fanbases, but think about it. We have no comics or books. We have no TV-series, animations or movies. We have just one game (DS2 is essentially a whole different universe) with little cutscenes. And WE, this community, have to create all this other media, these fanmade tributes by ourself. Because we want to. Because we love Dark Souls. Because we want to share that feeling with others. I am so, so proud of this part of our community and the people who keep Dark Souls alive. "I've died so many times... but I am still alive..." That. I think more than anything, that one line sums up the entire Souls series experience. You may have died in-game, but as long as you don't give up, you are not truly dead. These games are like life itself. It'll kick your fucking ass. It'll make you angry, and sad, and want to give up. But you can't. And you shouldn't. There's a whole world out there with a fascinating, and rather tragic history... that we can learn from. We can learn from the world's mistakes, and learn from our own, and better ourselves. And maybe, just maybe... if, instead of giving up, we hold true, we stay the course, we get back up every time we're kicked down, we believe... maybe we can better the world too. I think that's the real meaning of Dark Souls' light the fire endings. It looks and sounds terrible, but perhaps there's more to it. It's symbolic... we didn't give up, we didn't give into the dark. That's why there's no ending beyond that... because we know it. No ending could do it justice. We stayed the path and succeeded, no matter how many times we got kicked down along the way. And because of that, our souls shine all the brighter. It may never be possible to stave off the dark forever, but for now, we have defeated it. And of course to get there... you'll have to die so many times. But you will still be alive. Perhaps all the more.
...Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand I've now heard Ludleth's dialogue in Dark Souls III where he's having a nightmare about how unimaginably painful it was for him to link the fire in the past. And learned about Prince Lothric trying desperately to avoid linking the flame. And even seen DSIII's linking ending. Well, there goes my theory that it's meant to be a good thing, even just symbolically speaking. Wow man. How could anyone subject themselves to that. That's... dude, Gwyn WILLINGLY did that to himself, just to stave off the dark. And so did many others by the time of Dark Souls III. The people of this universe must REALLY fear the dark. Yeah, forget the link the fire ending. Walk away from that flame like a boss. Become a dark lord. Seek a way outside the cycle. End the fire. The first flame in this series is a hellish oblivion that awaits those who lose hope. TL;DR disregard my previous post. I mean... I don't feel like I was entirely wrong, Dark Souls IS about overcoming life's hardships. But NOT by linking the first flame! That's a bad idea! :P

every part of the song goes with the characters and scenes it is depicting. People forget that Dark souls is not about the hopelessness and darkness that permeates it but the determination of your character to push through all of it
Showing each ally being saved and all the jolly cooperation the only part i didnt get was the long finger kirk part. But perseverance is the main message, is it bad i teared up.
4:17 I cried so much because in my first game my quest ended here, but I was heartbroken until I saw what the real end is. After that, I felt so relieved that my bud died like the hero he is, and not by the hand of a forever traumatized daughter. This scene it's just stunning and I'm crying again.

so this is probably really stupid, but this song actually helped me through one of the hardest time of my life where my wife who I had known and been with for over 8 years left me for someone else. This song helped me to keep on track and even though it's been rough going I'm getting there and in the beginning this song really kind of kept me going for a good month of deep depression.

There's something this version has that the Reborn does not. At the end, we don't know if Oscar or the Chosen link the fire, nor which walked back into the Dark. Perhaps it doesn't matter.

The bit with Lautec is actually so creepy, knowing what he does during his storyline of the game. Something so helplessly edgy and disconcerting about how he so innocently holds the Fire Keeper.
Lautrec is a very religious man. He thinks the love of Fina is all he needs, and refuses to form any kind of meaningful relationships with anyone. Whatever it is that he plans on using humanity and/or fire keeper souls for, it has to tie into some ritual for his goddess. But killing fire keepers is a sin. He is hunted down by the Chosen Undead in a traditional Darkmoon Blade invasion, and all his treasure taken back. It seems he is then killed permanently by Ornstein. Dark Souls 3 calls his story tragic. Perhaps the deity he devoted his life to was false? With Lloyd in mind, it doesn't seem like there's any shortage of figures claiming to be divine.

She supposedly was one of those people who promised her love in return for their complete and undying devotion, though who knows what her love really was? As far as I've been able to see, she manipulated him into doing horrible things for the promise of something he never got. Kinda sad, really.
This actually made me cry. I guess dark souls means a lot more to me than I had thought. Playing through dark souls 1, 2, and 3 helped me get through a lot of tough times in my life, it taught me patience, self control, and helped me learn about friendship, jolly cooperation, and teamwork. Somehow, In some way, a game literally notorious for having a “convoluted” story, in a land where you’re left to essentially figure things out for yourself, slowly putting the pieces together...somehow, this world managed to tell a more beautiful, somber, sad, and righteous story than...I’d confidently say most modern media. Something about this video represents that in a way that is hard to describe. the characters, how little we know of them and how little they say, doesn’t stop us from making the connections we do. And it’s just...beautiful. Thank you Pruld, from the bottom of my heart. This video you made in goofy SFM of all places, lol, managed to capture a feeling about this game and it’s world and characters that I haven’t been able to articulate before. All I can say is that you have my immense gratitude. I know it’s silly. I know it’s just a video game. When you realize, Oscar (the knight who let you escape from the Undead Asylum) was the one linking the fire and the Chosen Undead, the hollowed knight, seeing Oscar and is proud of him.
Brian McDaniel Actually it isn't. Oscar's goal was to fulfill his family's prophecy. The Chosen Undead is the one who removed his helmet and wanting to help everyone during the bridge, thus he is the one without the helmet who is seeing the knight in fire. EDIT: He also carried Oscar out of the Asylum.
I am going through depression right now but the lines that "i am still alive" and "this is just the beginning" gives me so much hope to continue my life even with all the struggle i face and to finally achieve happiness. Thank you dark souls and thank you pruld.

My favorite part is 2:43. I don't know why but there is something about Solaris praising the sun in slow motion at that point in the song that just hits the feels. It really is amazing how well this song fits the game, good job on ThePruld for making the connection because it really is quite beautiful.

I teared with this very well done this game all in its self is one of the best stories I have ever heard and i love the fact that you have to read items to get the story so you have to play deep to get one of the best story lines I have personally ever heard like the story is so good you have to find out and push through to be worthy of understanding this game story

I come back to this every now and again, just for nostalgia purposes. Playing darks souls, when I was much younger, was the height of my gaming experiences. The story was captivating the difficulty was something unreal, but the enjoyment of completing it. I spent 100s of hours playing rags to riches in the forest. When I listen to this song, it always has me either crying or in tears, but because it was a happy time in my life and I wonder, not even elden ring, gave me the the true experience dark souls 1 did. The fear of the darkness past the crypt. The sadness of killing sif, especially after doing DLC first and she remembers you. The frustration of Ornstein and Smough.

2:24 is one of my favorite parts because in the lore for the darkmoon nightess she wears the armor to hid what humanity has done to her appearance. "Writhes" I believe it says. And at that point the song talks about turning scars into beauty, while lautrec is holding her. This guy really thought these scenes out and connected them to the lyrics of the song.

Humans are born from the darkness, Humanity is a fragment of the dark soul
to be a dark lord does not inherently mean to be an evil lord, it simply means that you are the lord of darkness
the age of fire is the age of light, and light is not inherently good
neither are truly good or bad, they are simply seen that way
to usher in a dark age is to allow nature to continue, but keep in mind that the fires will always return
I would agree but in the artorias of the abyss dlc you see what happens when the age of dark occurs in oolacile brought on by "a serpent" (kaathe), and everyone mutates into gross mutant things. I believe it was due to "the dark" enhancing and corrupting the power of the piece of the dark soul in every human and causing it to mutate them out of control. its also why Manus is so huge, he was the pygmy who found the first dark soul (as he was the "primeval human") who had the biggest and most powerful piece of the dark soul which made him the biggest and most powerful corrupted human.
I agree that the age of light also sucks because the only god left at that point is Gwyndolin who manipulates you with Frampt and its only prolonging the inevitable descent into the age of dark but at least people only descend slowly into madness instead of turn into gross monster things.
that only happened because of the pygmy's descent into madness when his humanity ran wild after his torture, his insanity spread throughout the abyss and touched the humanity within the denizins of oolacile, making them run wild as well. By the time of the chosen undead, Manus is dead and the only beings living in the abyss are the four kings and darkstalker kaathe, the former of which are vanquished as well, making the abyss safe to traverse. It's possible that the reason that the denizins of oolacile became those monsters was simply because of Manus's humanity running wild
the age of dark is the age of men, and the abyss is a construct of darkness, meaning that humans should find no danger within or from it, unless a being that descended into madness controls it
the chosen undead becoming a dark lord could very well have control over the primordial serpents of darkness and, by extension, the abyss. Depending on what you think kind of character the chosen undead is, it's safe to say that he will either use it to corrupt humans and become a tyrant, or he will ensure that it poses no threat to any of the humans

Under the control of the maddened Manus, the Abyss was spreading and causing humanity to run wild. Under the control of the four kings, it destroys all who enter. Under the control of Kaathe, it is perfectly fine and safe to those who deems worthy of meeting him.

I am so fucking proud that Dark Souls is still alive. I know many people say how shitty our community is, and partially it is true, but... look at this. Four years later, people still make breath-takingly beautiful tributes for Dark Souls. Four years later, people still want more. The love this community has is so strong. Yeah, there are much nuttier, more obsessive fanbases, but think about it. We have no comics or books. We have no TV-series, animations or movies. We have just one game (DS2 is essentially a whole different universe) with little cutscenes. And WE, this community, have to create all this other media, these fanmade tributes by ourself. Because we want to. Because we love Dark Souls. Because we want to share that feeling with others. I am so, so proud of this part of our community and the people who keep Dark Souls alive. That. I think more than anything, that one line sums up the entire Souls series experience. You may have died in-game, but as long as you don't give up, you are not truly dead.
These games are like life itself. It'll kick your fucking ass. It'll make you angry, and sad, and want to give up. But you can't. And you shouldn't. There's a whole world out there with a fascinating, and rather tragic history... that we can learn from. We can learn from the world's mistakes, and learn from our own, and better ourselves.
And maybe, just maybe... if, instead of giving up, we hold true, we stay the course, we get back up every time we're kicked down, we believe... maybe we can better the world too.
I think that's the real meaning of Dark Souls' light the fire endings. It looks and sounds terrible, but perhaps there's more to it. It's symbolic... we didn't give up, we didn't give into the dark. That's why there's no ending beyond that... because we know it. No ending could do it justice. We stayed the path and succeeded, no matter how many times we got kicked down along the way. And because of that, our souls shine all the brighter. It may never be possible to stave off the dark forever, but for now, we have defeated it.
And of course to get there... you'll have to die so many times. But you will still be alive. Perhaps all the more.
...Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand I've now heard Ludleth's dialogue in Dark Souls III where he's having a nightmare about how unimaginably painful it was for him to link the fire in the past. And learned about Prince Lothric trying desperately to avoid linking the flame. And even seen DSIII's linking ending.
Well, there goes my theory that it's meant to be a good thing, even just symbolically speaking.
Wow man. How could anyone subject themselves to that. That's... dude, Gwyn WILLINGLY did that to himself, just to stave off the dark. And so did many others by the time of Dark Souls III. The people of this universe must REALLY fear the dark.

so this is probably really stupid, but this song actually helped me through one of the hardest time of my life where my wife who I had known and been with for over 8 years left me for someone else. This song helped me to keep on track and even though it's been rough going I'm getting there and in the beginning this song really kind of kept me going for a good month of deep depression.

The bit with Lautec is actually so creepy, knowing what he does during his storyline of the game. Something so helplessly edgy and disconcerting about how he so innocently holds the Fire Keeper.

Lautrec is a very religious man. He thinks the love of Fina is all he needs, and refuses to form any kind of meaningful relationships with anyone. Whatever it is that he plans on using humanity and/or fire keeper souls for, it has to tie into some ritual for his goddess. But killing fire keepers is a sin. He is hunted down by the Chosen Undead in a traditional Darkmoon Blade invasion, and all his treasure taken back. It seems he is then killed permanently by Ornstein.
Dark Souls 3 calls his story tragic. Perhaps the deity he devoted his life to was false? With Lloyd in mind, it doesn't seem like there's any shortage of figures claiming to be divine.

She supposedly was one of those people who promised her love in return for their complete and undying devotion, though who knows what her love really was? As far as I've been able to see, she manipulated him into doing horrible things for the promise of something he never got. Kinda sad, really.
This actually made me cry. I guess dark souls means a lot more to me than I had thought. Playing through dark souls 1, 2, and 3 helped me get through a lot of tough times in my life, it taught me patience, self control, and helped me learn about friendship, jolly cooperation, and teamwork. I love you dark souls
This video will always make me cry. Somehow, In some way, a game literally notorious for having a “convoluted” story, in a land where you’re left to essentially figure things out for yourself, slowly putting the pieces together...somehow, this world managed to tell a more beautiful, somber, sad, and righteous story than...I’d confidently say most modern media. Something about this video represents that in a way that is hard to describe. the characters, how little we know of them and how little they say, doesn’t stop us from making the connections we do. And it’s just...beautiful. Thank you Pruld, from the bottom of my heart. This video you made in goofy SFM of all places, lol, managed to capture a feeling about this game and it’s world and characters that I haven’t been able to articulate before. All I can say is that you have my immense gratitude. I know it’s silly. I know it’s just a video game. But the emotion I feel and the tears that fall, not even out of sadness but just “emotion” in it’s raw and intense form, are real. Real enough for me to be grateful for you having made it, man.
The imagery used with Artorias with Sif, and Solaire with the Sunlight Maggot on him are so powerful with those lyrics. It honestly gives me shivers.

Brian McDaniel Actually it isn't. Oscar's goal was to fulfill his family's prophecy. The Chosen Undead is the one who removed his helmet and wanting to help everyone during the bridge, thus he is the one without the helmet who is seeing the knight in fire.
EDIT: He also carried Oscar out of the Asylum.

My favorite part is 2:43. I don't know why but there is something about Solaris praising the sun in slow motion at that point in the song that just hits the feels. I come back to this every now and again, just for nostalgia purposes. Playing darks souls, when I was much younger, was the height of my gaming experiences. The story was captivating the difficulty was something unreal, but the enjoyment of completing it. I spent 100s of hours playing rags to riches in the forest. When I listen to this song, it always has me either crying or in tears, but because it was a happy time in my life and I wonder, not even elden ring, gave me the the true experience dark souls 1 did. The fear of the darkness past the crypt. The sadness of killing sif, especially after doing DLC first and she remembers you. The frustration of Ornstein and Smough.
