Another great video. Thank you, Connie! One neat thing about the fan chart is that it's an independent app, made by a community member named Greg Clarke. Almost everything on WikiTree is done by volunteers. But Greg is an extraordinary one.

I'm in awe of the brilliance of your mind. Ive been trying to find link between my poor Liverpool ggrandfather Hayes (brick wall at 1800) and his wife's elite Hayes line (name daughtered out 1600) that I traced back through London/ de la Haye du puits Normandy/Orkney/Demark. And a stand alone Hayes line in London/Liverpool/Everton 1600s. Have discovered so much history but your wonderful tips alone expand my focus so when I venture back in I'll have hope 🙂 Thanks again.

I have a lot of ancestor pairs who I am a descendant through several of their offspring. This is especially true in the smaller villages where they lived. Also, there were less people in any given area hundreds of years ago than there are today...You have hundreds of thousands of ancestors if you go back over 10 generations, so by numbers alone, you are more likely to have duplicate ancestors through different lines than not.

  • @elletee
    @elletee 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Ooooaaah. I'm a WikiTree member and recently produced a similar chart using different software. It highlighted the collapsing pedigree in a different colour - but only one different colour. This one is *much* better as it uses different colours for each duplicating ancestor, so it's easy to identify where any one person appears more than once. I have three sets of cousins marrying so my fan chart is rather colourful. :-)

Since I last commented on this video, I have found a 5th great-grandmother who occupies two spaces in my tree. She was married 4 times, and two of those times were to two different 5th great-grandfathers on my paternal grandma's side. She is my 5th great-grandma through her first husband(Hughes) and my step-5th great-grandma through her 3rd husband(Duke, who is a 5th great-grandpa with his first wife). She appears to have only had children with husbands 1 & 2. While this doesn't lead to pedigree collapse for me, it sure does make me cross-eyed trying to look at it on the tree.

Thanks Connie for the great video - always love your videos, and am so glad you liked my Fan Chart app enough to feature it today! I struggled with what to call the feature / how do you name these ancestors that show up more than once - I settled on calling them Repeating Ancestors, since they repeat in your chart. Like you, using the word Duplicate just sounded wrong (like we were cloning them!). Glad you like the Pastel choice for palette - thanks for showing off that feature too. I first added the Colourize Repeats feature when I delved into my mother's French-Canadian family - once past the sixth generation it's a rainbow effect - and by the 9th generation, more like a Grizwald Christmas lights display! Keep up the great work Connie!

I have one particular ancestor that has 6 known relationships to me. One being a great (not sure how many greats without looking) uncle. I wanna say 6th or 7th great. But then he's also a cousin of varying degrees because in their small town 4 or 5 families regularly seemed to intermarry.
If you have family tree maker, you can download your ancestry tree and it lists every relationship of every single individual.

A set of great grandparents were 1st cousins, once removed. That means that a set of his great grandparents and of her grandparents were the same people. Makes the tree kind of awkward, but then again, only half the research needed! On another line, I have found some Branson DNA matches with as many as FIVE connections to my own Branson people!

There are a few instances of endogamy in my family tree which has made DNA clustering incredibly difficult. The only saving grace is that the brick wall I've been chipping away at seems to be the only branch that is not in some way endogamous. For that person (a great, great grandfather) I've been able to find siblings using tools like dnapainter but the parents have continued to elude me.

    • @GenealogyTV

Keep digging in the original records. If there is a lot of endogamy, DNA is harder to use.

My father's 1st cousin married a cousin 3 times over. Their sons have 1 set of ancestors in their tree 3 times, and 2 other sets twice. My mother has 9 couples in her tree twice. My father has 4 couples in his family twice. It makes DNA tracing complicated.

    • @GenealogyTV

Because her daughter is my 1st cousin plus my aunt on my father's side

For Catholics, if you have access to church marriage records, it's quite easy to find levels of consanguinity, because since at least the Council of Trent (late 16th century) the engaged must ask for special permission to marry if they have a certain level of "blood relation" already. In the weeks prior to the intended marriage, the priest(s) would announce such intention, and anyone who knew the engaged had some "close" blood relation could bring that forward. Then a church official would evaluate that and, if deemed acceptable, would issue a dispensation that would be included in the marriage record.
The levels of consanguinity, as considered by the Catholic Church, are as follows:
    - 1st level: Siblings (at least one common parent) - not acceptable for marriage, of course.
    - 2nd level: 1st cousins (at least a common grandparent) - acceptable but highly discouraged
    - 3rd level: 2nd cousins (at least a common great-grandparent)
    - 4th level: 3rd cousins (at least a common great-great-grandparent)
    - 5th level: 4th cousins (at least a common great-great-great-grandparent) - this level of consanguinity is usually not referred in marriage records because it is considered safe and requires no dispensation.
So, the level of consanguinity, as considered by the Catholic Church, is basically G+1.
I have two 6th great-grandparents who were forced to *marry twice* because they were 3rd cousins. The priest didn't know they were 3rd cousins, so they married on the 25th of January 1748. But then the blood relation was discovered, and because they had not asked for the required dispensation, the marriage was annulled. So they went and asked (and paid...) for such "apostolic dispensation", got it, and married again on the 22nd of July of 1748.
Although I know they were 3rd cousins, I don't know how. For the groom, I was able to go back two more generations (his grandparents), and for the bride, only to her parents. I needed to go back 4 generations (to my 10th great-grandparents...) to be able to find the repeated ancestors... :(

Ok, you have sent me down a rabbit hole where I have always struggled in understanding but did not really want to go......as I always seemed to have the wrong spouse selected in FTM. Now I can see it......I think????
John Hough (1697) + Hanna Denison (1699) had John Hough (1723) + Abigail Baldwin (1732)
The we have Thomas Baldwin (1701) + Anna Bingham (?) had Abigail Baldwin (1732)
Ok now we have John Hough (1697) + Anna Bingham (?) no children
So Anna Bingham (?) is both my 7th great grandmother as well as my 7th great step grandmother?
In Family Tree Maker by switching spouses, the tree view makes sense. But in Ancestry there are lines going all over as it seems to try to link children to step parents???? ugh and double ugh
And the other crazy one is two brother married two sisters----one brother died and one sister died...so it seems I have a brother in law marrying a sister in law and they also had children in the late 1600's What is the matter with these people? Did they do this just to mess up my tree?
I know the above is not a proper pedigree listing. So the question is--I don't believe in Ancestry as FTM and Ancestry are synchronized, that the tree chart in Ancestry can be made have less lines as it seems to be including step parents and children. I am hoping somewhat of what I wrote make sense?
I got a bit behind on your videos, but he last one on mistakes is so valuable. I started doing this in 1973 and went down several wrong lines as I just took for granted the trees of others. Searching microfilm at a Morman Church was a bit of a challenge. I am trying to start again and you are a blessing.

On Ancestry, he is listed as sharing 420 cM/6% shared DNA and on 23 & me, he is listed at 450 cm/6% shared DNA. Also on 23 & me, the indicated lineage shows one of his parents as my 1st cousin and one of their parents as my mother's sibling. The big issue is that he was adopted and does not know who his birth parents were and my grandparents only had 6 kids, none who had any kids before 1960. Remote communities where you only have a small pool of people of the opposite sex to draw from, you very easily find yourself a double cousin or married to a cousin without knowing it! If you have a Quaker background as I do, you'll find an ancestor married to a cousin, as well. Because I guess its better to marry a cousin whose in the same faith than to marry an "infidel"?
