I liked the information on copying and pasting into Excel and then sorting the columns for further research. Great for seeing the neighbours of ancestors to help further researching.

@@GenealogyTV Ancestry is the only online website where it is possible to copy and paste the census returns into Excel...Would you agree?
@@BMWGUEST You can do this on FamilySearch.org as well. I've not tried it on MyHeritage or others, but I'm sure you can since they are all indexed.

You can use conditional formatting to highlight numbers in a range to narrow down your "possible father" age range.
Like this information. Just wanted to let you know about the "last signed in" information on a user's profile. It does not fully mean they are not on Ancestry. Only that they have not signed in. If they never sign out, then they will end up showing that it has been a long time since they signed in. You cannot really go by that information. For those of us who never log out, please remind yourselves to log out regularly so that your profile shows you as being active. I just found this out a last year.

To avoid having to delete the top matter on every page, when you are copying, click on the first row that you want to copy, then hold the shift key while you click the last line. You will highlight only the range between the two clicks, then when you paste into your spreadsheet you'll only have the data you want.

My favorite of these 5 is the tip about copying the census data into the spreadsheet program and including several pages before and after your family member. Second favorite is the one for searching private trees.

Thanks for the "shortcut" in searching the Card Catalog in ancestry. I have probably seen that episode before, but it takes this old dog a few runs at it to master the new trick! I'm still searching for data on my maternal grandfather who was last known to be in San Mateo County CA in the early 1940s. By then he should have had an SS number, so I'll search that database again. I'm also hoping he was still around in 1950 in anticipation of that census release next spring.

Hey ~my family is from that area and I have found that the unindexed County Records on family search really useful and there are good data sets on norcal genealogy that I have used to break a few walls

Looking at American records is so much clearer than UK records. I have been slogging through English records for some time. I hit a 3x great granduncle that went to the states and fallowed it. Within no time I found hundreds of distant American deceased cousins. All were clearly right very few confusions or possible mistakes.
Eager for part 2. I am less interested in my recent Ancestors in that my great grandparents are known partly from my parents, and they all were born in the 1800’s. My real interest is in earlier to include my gggGrandfather who was an Edward from Maryland who appears on the death certificate of my ggGrandfather. Unfortunately many Edward’s in Maryland about then.
I actually think part two is better than part one. Stay tuned.

Hi Connie, have you ever encountered Excel will not paste the census data unless it puts in in ONE column? I am trying your tip to filter data brought over to Excel - except it won't copy the records in "row" format! (If that makes sense). How do I copy the data from the census page and format it like yours? Love your shows, thank you
If you’re using Firefox it will not work. If you don’t have a reasonably updated copy of XL it will not work. Also you need to paste as special and then choose text, if you’re not doing that already.
I am really liking ALL these tips...but I really do want to try the Excel filtering if I can figure out why 'special text' paste is formatting the results in a vertical (columns) rather than horizontal (rows). This is more than likely an Excel 2013 quirk and I will try to find some solutions. I am searching through my Davis line and would LOVE to be able to do copy/paste rather than records 100s of records manually.
Followup: Connie, I don't prefer using MS Edge as a browser, but to test my problem, I opened the census page on MS Edge and then did the copy/past to Excel successfully. Just thought I'd let you know that this trick IS browser specific and apparantly Mozilla doesn't like playing :( Oh well I will use Edge for this one reason :) Thank you for the idea, Connie!
Thanks. I use Chrome which works too. I have since learned from other viewers that fire fox does not work either.
I like ancestory yet some of it is rather convoluted. 3 months in and I'm still find out things about it and how it works. It is a lot about playing with the filters. A lot of the time it assumes the name is different than you spelled it. (It's not) If you set the filter to exact it comes up with zero results. (sometimes) if you then set the filter to high it comes up with a thousand Results just as you spelled it. (Ten of which may be the person you are looking for)

Not how to break into a private tree... but you can search for your ancestors if their private tree is set to "searchable."

Favorite tip was excel with census
You should definitely see part two. I think it is even better.
I love the idea of copying the transcribed information from a census record and pasting it into an Excel spreadsheet, but when I tried it, I had a bit of a problem. I am using Excel on my MacBook Pro and when I paste the copied information into the blank spreadsheet, it puts all of the information into one column and does not spread it out over numerous columns. I have tried it several times and it still does the same thing. I have used Excel for many years and I don't remember having this problem before. So, I don't know if I am doing something wrong or what the issue is. Do you have any suggestions? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!
Here are two things to know. One is that if you are using Fire Fox, it will not work. You need to be using Chrome or other browser. Two, is you need to have a fairly recent version of Excel. Alternatively, I just finished shooting an episode about how to do this in Google Sheets. If you have a Google account, this is free. In Google Sheets you would Paste Special > Values Only.
The Google Sheets episode will be out in a few weeks.

I do have a question. How do you highlight the census so the name is easier to find in the records?
Can you clarify your question? I do show you how to highlight the text, but I'm not sure that's what you're after.
@@GenealogyTV yes like if it is a regular census. I noticed some has the names high lighted in the regular documents. How do we do that?
@@watercraze2000 Just click into the image. See if that works for you.
If you clicked through from an ancestors profile, Ancestry will highlight the ancestor when you drill into the image. You can also highlight someone by opening up the people icon near the bottom to open the transcript. Then click around in the transcript of names and different names will highlight in the image.

I notice you have family from Denmark. How do you research them in Denmark?
It's a combination of Ancestry and the Danish Archives online. Thankfully I met a Danish cousin through Facebook who helps me translate what Google Translate would not.

I am totally getting NOWHERE in filling out my tree and finding the app impossible to make sense of anything from my android phone As expensive as all these tests znd mrnverships are. One would hope for a user friendly interfsce .and why fant we see living matches in the tres Its absolutey blicking me from finding out who my paternsl relatives are even if ive been connected to them.
I give up the app is not user friendky wint allow me to see anything related to my matches trees and is taking me in circles im over it
-Searching private trees is great. But if you don't pay for ancestry (many millions don't) and the tree owner is not a dna match, you cannot message them.
-"Collaborate" is a funny word. 99% of people don't reply, then they copy your tree info and steal your pics. I've messaged at least 100 people, I can count on one hand how many have replied, how many said they would "check into it" and I never hear back from them even after following up. I CAN'T count how many read my messages and never reply. Even after follow ups.
-The log in date is not always accurate if the person does not log out of ancestry. If I logged in two years ago and don't log out my profile will say "last logged in two years ago" yet I go to the website every day. There is no reason for me to log out as I am the only one that uses my laptop.
-The amount of time it took you to create a spreadsheet for data from 20 pages of census you could have looked at each page or you could have also just pasted it all into a notepad, used Ctrl-F and searched for the Davis name.
-To put the same data into multiple cells, type your info in the first cell. copy that info. highlight all the other cells (click the first cell and drag down the row or across the column; OR click the first cell, then while holding shift click the last cell), then just paste. (It's been a while since I've used excel/open office but I think that is correct)
-You look just like your grandmother.
I have two lines of Davis (common name). The ones I'm after were in North Carolina, some ended up in Iowa.
