I recently purchased pro tools and the new thing I learned was the ability to expand the fan chart to 7 generations (and the other features of the fan chart). My wish list would be to be able to expand DNA matches to 7 generations as well.
Glad to finally receive an Ancestry TH-cam video that’s actually useful to UK members, rather than a ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ about some US football star I’ve never heard of! I have a 20k tree that’s fully sourced (current 2024 addresses, no unsourced additions from ‘Ancestry trees’ or ‘Potential father’ hints). I might subscribe to Pro Tools for a month to do a one-off error-check. The one brilliant thing I learnt from this session was your use of custom tree tags for World War I, etc. I’ll start using them for military records and US newspaper obituaries that are behind paywalls (awaiting free-access weekends) and making to-do lists for visits to county archives (lots of early Lancashire BMDs are still not digitised on either Ancestry or Find My Past).
I need this have used the tree checker but didn't understand it so really wasn't using it correctly would go to the individuals and just try and look at them but they didn't fall off the list even when I updated them in my tree, but I wasn't using the buttons on the report
Crista, thank you for a great presentation. have been a genealogist for 45+ years, and on Ancestry since it first began; I love that I can still keep learning things in all the little nooks and crannies of the Ancestry platform. Love love love Pro Tools, and have to confess that I did not do a deep dive into the maps section. Like you, I am a map nerd, and you've now got me inspired to really ramp up my map usage. That was my big take-a-way from today. PS: I also love using tags, and wish they were unlimited, as I use them to designate MRCA couples and I place those on down the lines, as well as the various main descendent couples on down the line for DNA matches/connections. This makes it super easy for me to track up and down family lines via profiles, (I have a huge tree) without having to scratch my head and try to recall, "now what line(s) does this person spring from?" and without having to flip back and forth to various tree views.
Life has been happening and I have been inactive with my genealogy. I am super excited about these pro tools. I had not heard of them and now I want to get back to work again. I am in disarray since I moved a couple of years ago so much work ahead. Thank you for doing these videos.
I know how much Crista loves descendancy research (so do I), I’m surprised that the bottom of the descendancy report doesn’t show the number of descendants! I would share that number every family reunion with my cousins. Yes, I could take the time to count them but my grandpa’s list is 11 pages long!
Looking for the the new thing I learned, I discovered a 2nd new thing. 1st was when you were in the tree view and you clicked on the name there is now added the Tool. Before I always clicked on the name to go to the profile and then go tools and choose view in tree to have that person's tree view. 2nd when looking for this optin again I right clicked on a name name in the tree and got a list of options I can choose, including view in tree without having to go to that person's profile page. Thank you for showing that shortcut.
Could you please add a "Buried" tab under All People, Events & Places. And could you make the list for Buried printable? Could you also add a "Buried" tab under Tree Mapper, Events & Places. On the map could you group them by cities and Cemetery names? This would be a BIG help, thanks
Its great to see you doing videos again. They are always encouraging, entertaining and instructive. The big thing I learned is I have to get ProTools. But more specifically, ther filtering tools in the All People List will be very helpful. And I want to see the score of my tree.
The tree checker would be the feature that I think would be most helpful for me. I knew about it but that would be the one that I would say I learned about today.
I've had an ancestry subscription since 2018. My mom was born in France and my dad's grandparents in Norway, so I found my ancestors going back to the 1500s in France and 1700 in Norway in the parish records on their online archives because this was not yet available at ancestry. So if you can't afford the pro tools, you can still find your ancestors. I did have to learn to read the languages, though.
I'm following along as you point these new feature out, and it is taking days to get through because I am going down rabbit holes. Anyone else having this experience? Yesterday I tried the possible duplicates, when I spied the first one that grabbed my attention. Today I'm back watching the video. Such great information! Thank you for this!
OMG!! Thank you so much for this! How I wish this would have been around when I began delving into my family history 40 years ago! I just subscribed to Pro Tools this year and hadn't really used it. I've always wanted to print compiled info for family....now I can after I get some things cleaned up. Thank you again!
I learned useful features of LIST by viewing this video. I also learned more about MAPS. I plan to explore the new sort in shared matches to see if it allows me to sort by centimorgan size. Thanks. I watched the whole thing!
The ancestors pinned to the counties maps will be helpful for me when creating my locality guides. The more ancestors I have in a particular county helps me know where best to set my focus.
I LOVE the new tools, I am working on memory books for my family with pictures of all the holidays through the years. I am excited to add a fan of their line to the front page of each book.
I went ahead on faith that protools would be great - so glad you did the video. I have been a long time user of FTM and their tools - so I rejoi😊ce that prot tools is adding those features plus even more! This video is a great review of some of these tools but each needs more study and practice to more fully understand their application and power. I look forward to more of your wonderful video tutorials! Thanks so much for all you do for us!❤❤
Really enjoyed this and how to use both the lists and charts better and how to utilise the filters for better searching. I liked the Pro tools explanations as that's helped convince me I do want to add that in the New Year
Loved this! I especially liked seeing your tree tag titles and the way one can use the filters to make research list. Genius! On the topic of sources I would really love how to add source citations. The fill ins on ancestry I find confusing. Thank you!
I don't have pro tools YET... but will very soon... I don't think I could list 1 think I learned because I learned so much here. lol I will tell you I am in love with the maps feature you showed, I have always loved maps. And excited to try the pro tools for the enhanced dna matches. I have several brick walls, and I am helping a friend who knows very little and I think this will be a huge help. Thank you for all your wonderful videos! I will be rewatching this a few times!
Crista, thank you for this session. I have been thinking about taking out a pro tools subscription for some time now and this video just about sealed the deal. Most of my ancestry is Ireland based, with all of the usual impacts of emigration so I’m hoping the mapping and improved filters pieces will help. Thanks. Brian.
Hi Crista, everything in pro tools sounds wonderful, you are such a great teacher. I do not have it yet, it is getting expensive, will have to wait 😢. But I have learned to view fan charts for others in my tree, how wonderful.
Very informative. Thanks. One question - you mentioned that you enter places with current place data. I’ve always entered places with the data of the time, i.e., if a person was born in a county in Va that later became West Virginia, I would enter it as Virginia with a notation that it later became WV. Same with a place like Hawaii before it became a state,, I would enter as Terr. Of Hawaii, etc. so, is there a way to see places in a list so that I can see what I need to edit or is it just going to be editing when I run across them? Thanks.
This is the “correct way” to record places but as ancestry algorithms are connected to modern maps, they have reversed the way this is done. Personally I would prefer it was done as you describe ie enter the “as per record” data and then have an additional field for geolocation. I don’t think it will ever be changed. Some platforms such as Familysearch often have the same location entered multiple times so you can select the correct one for the time period but it’s correlated with one location.
@ thanks for your response. After thinking about this for a few days, I’ve decided to leave it as I currently have been entering the locations, at least until If and when Ancestry comes up with a reason that I absolutely NEED to have it show on a current day map. Until then I’m happy with having my records indicate where it was at the actual time. It would be nice to show on a map but not necessary.
The ability to create a research list for a specific geographical area was my favourite pick up from this session. I am sure I can do it on my personal family tree program but it is not nearly as simple and instinctive as this seemed to be. I think the next session I the one that I am really interested in though.
For the reports, I'd love the flexibility to choose the data in a report, and I'd love to be able to print a person's full life story, similar to the life story option on each person's page.
They are! But you have to travel to the relevant record repositories, which may well be all over whichever country you are in, and those repositories may or may not have those records indexed. Plus they are only open at specific times and dates. It is surprising how little you can accomplish in 8 hours in a record office compared to online, at weekends and at all hours of the day or night.
Would the TREE TAGS be rolled out to the Mobile format? I do make use of the Tags on the browser version. I’m still adding in the suffix box DNA etc as I do use both formats.
Custom tree tags... really!?! Wish I would have known about this sooner :) I'm also excited about the list view / filters. My tree is currently at a rating of 8.9%, can't wait to get it to a 9.5%!!
I think being able to find the most common tree surnames in the shared matches between you and a target person would be the key to identifying hidden lines and wife's surnames.
Thanks, Crista for another awesome video. Have you covered in a video how to use the grouping with the different colored squares for ancestors? If you have can you tell me where I can find it? I would really like to see how to use that grouping tool.
Hello! That's the next Ancestry Virtual Event coming up in December. It's scheduled for the 11th. I can't share links here on TH-cam in comments for some reason. But, if you find me on Instagram or Facebook and send me a message, I can get you the link.
Before the recent changes if you wanted access to see historical documents you would have to download the document as a jpeg and then upload it as media. If you did not download you would not be able to see the document when your membership ended. You would see the link but not the actual form. You could tell the documents we uploaded as there was a garbage can beside them. The garbage can has disappeared and I now have double documents. Does this mean that when your membership ends you now have access to see all the linked documents without having to download and upload? I hope I explained enough so you understand what I’ll asking.
The features I like are to be able to search by, for example, "who was born in _______ county, NY and at some point moved to __________ county, Ohio", and to have unlimited (within reason) dot colors for my DNA matches. (Dots are in pro tools).
Is there a tool we can use to standardize our place names so that they are more useable with the new tree mapper tool? Or do we have to go into each one and update it if it's not standard?
Hi Jennifer - I sync my Ancestry tree with Family Tree Maker (FTM). Then, I use the place standardization tools in FTM and sync it back to my online tree.
When you were working with filters for the tree list and mentioned filtering to look at those who may have registered for the draft, I looked to see if there was a filter by gender, to eliminate females, but i didn't see that. Perhaps needed?
I subscribed to Pro Tools, using it mostly to clean up my tree, no relationships and doubles. The reports are very interesting and I'm now seeing some of the end of line people who aren't connected. I started with 55,000 people (2 of us trying to figure out a few mysteries, and I wanted to clean it up and start fresh. Down to 26,000. I'm using Pro tools mainly to delete people, but sure can't figure out how it works because the "no relationship" list does NOT show all that have no relationhips. I'd like to know how it is designed to work, like what has to happen for those N/R people to be on that list. Thank you
I have added details in the place field as specific as addresses and farm # as in Germany. Is this messing up the map locator? Should I be recording those details in a different field?
Does the map portion come into play if you haven't clicked in the little box .. for example you entered place of marriage and there is a box that says show map on Life story.
What I learned is I have a score which is like waving a red flag in front of me. Lol. 7.8 and already tackling duplicates and errors. I love the map feature and will be exploring that later today!
There is something about those of us who are genealogists. We love a good checklist or a goal to work towards. Glad you are finding it useful and motivating. ❤
Crista, thanks for the tour of Pro Tools. I've been waffling on this decision, but your demo of the maps tools convinced me to go for it! I love maps, too, and i have previously longed to see this information available in Ancestry, and now it's there. I also love the enhanced fan views for identifying the holes in my research and the enhanced shared matches.
❤am watching a recorded version. Can I use mapping feature to list every one who lived near Cortland Nebraska between 1863 and 1940? We have been clipping the local newspaper to build a Data about our town because we will be 150 yrs old in just a few years
1. I like the family group sheet the best for sharing with family who aren't excited by genealogy!. 2. I'd like to save charts and reports in ancestry to return to them to incorporate changes. 3. Is it better not to change enter the township of a fact, for mapping in generally?
I noticed your tag "Royalty/Nobility". I have a tag called "Notable" for those folks who were in politics, wrote a book, was an artist, etc, (one who murdered someone) so that they can be found easily. I also have a tag for unusual deaths. I had a lot of folks killed by railway accidents, so that is one that I created. Morbid, I know, but still of interest.
Hi Jane - The next one is on December 11th. And then we've got a bunch more planned for January and February. I can't share links in comments on TH-cam for some reason. But, if you find me on Instagram or Facebook and send me a private message, I can send you the link to register.
Thank you ..for for good Ancestry Videos, which I’ve watched off and on for several Years. I saw your Tree ..in the past and you have several lines that I’m also connected too….one being 💥Asa Wade..who is my 4th cousin 4x removed! 😊
my goal was to go back to when my family came to America... but some are 12 to 15 generations deep... I wish we had a tool that would print all of it - not just 7 generations. I understand this would be huge.. but the fan view would be fantastic if it just kept going and you could move around to bring different areas into view
With respect to the Ahnentafel style report, it might be helpful to show as the generations go down and get larger, which one are on the paternal side and which are on the maternal side and which are the parents of a certain person on the list.. If a person was showing this to someone else less familiar with the ancestors, it could be shown that #9 is the mother of #4, ( a simple example) and it get more complicated the further down you go.
Are they ever going to put a back button on the pro shared matches page? I also have to use my browser’s back button to get back to my match’s page. Also if you make a note on the shared matches page, it doesn’t transfer to the match’s page. You have to make the notes on the match’s page.
When adding a record with a location and it’s only a city state for instance, be sure to click into the location field and search for the county, state, USA, for example. Note some states have more than one county for a city name in which case you may need to do research to determine which is the correct county in that state for the city your ancestor belongs to. If you already have records on your tree, then use the edit button for the fact. Click into the location field and use the standardized place names in the drop-down to add the county name in and perhaps country. Hope this makes sense
I sat through an hour of discussion of lists and maps hoping you would get to the portion of your talk on DNA shared matches. Finally, there it was in the last two minutes, and it was barely covered. Maybe next time you can state the general content of your talk up front, including what you are not going to get to. Good job on the lists and maps, but they are not what I care about the most.
Hi Valerie! There isn't a native print functionality that's been developed yet. But, you can do screen shots or screen captures. I use a tool called Snagit for things like that on my PC.
I subscribed this year; 3 yrs ago my computer died, when I reestablished my Ancestry access my database stopped updating automatically to keep online and database in sync. If I could get instructions to resync I would be immensely grateful. I have been working online a lot and worry that I will lose the new data there and not update my personal home database. Will online changes override the home database at this point?
I recently purchased pro tools and the new thing I learned was the ability to expand the fan chart to 7 generations (and the other features of the fan chart).
My wish list would be to be able to expand DNA matches to 7 generations as well.
Finding floating branches - great webinar!
Your side comment about being able to sort by third column in shared matches is gold! (Especially when there’s multiple pages of shared matches)
The enhanced shared matches sorting option is a game changer! Thank you! I've been able to build out my tree and place the DNA matches!
sorting the matches' matches is wonderful!!!!
Isn't it just the best?! ❤
I prefer You Tube videos for topics. I don't do Instagram or Facebook. It also allows me to go back to watch something a second time easier.
Is there still a map that shows DNA matches?
Glad to finally receive an Ancestry TH-cam video that’s actually useful to UK members, rather than a ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ about some US football star I’ve never heard of! Love that! ❤
Crista, thank you for a great presentation. have been a genealogist for 45+ years, and on Ancestry since it first began; I love that I can still keep learning things in all the little nooks and crannies of the Ancestry platform. Great to learn today to be able to sort a DNA match close to distant especially for those people with several pages of shared matches.
Learning about the mapping tool was great.
Glad you found it helpful, Charvonne. 😉
My favorite report with the pro tools is the descendancy report. i use this to help with DNA matches.
As always, Crista, you present with such enthusiasm ❤..
Life has been happening and I have been inactive with my genealogy. I am super excited about these pro tools. I had not heard of them and now I want to get back to work again. I am in disarray since I moved a couple of years ago so much work ahead. Thank you for doing these videos.

Could you please add a "Buried" tab under All People, Events & Places. And could you make the list for Buried printable?
Could you also add a "Buried" tab under Tree Mapper, Events & Places. On the map could you group them by cities and Cemetery names?
This would be a BIG help, thanks
That would be handy when wanting to visit churchyards/cemeteries
Its great to see you doing videos again. They are always encouraging, entertaining and instructive. The big thing I learned is I have to get ProTools. But more specifically, ther filtering tools in the All People List will be very helpful. And I want to see the score of my tree.

Wahoo! ❤
I loved the reports. I am using the Ahnentafel report as an index for a family book. Thank you!
I learned about the sorting of shared matches thank you. You always do a great job.
Fantastic! I have ProTools and didn't know hardly anything about it. Excited to explore now.
I learned useful features of LIST by viewing this video. I also learned more about MAPS. I plan to explore the new sort in shared matches to see if it allows me to sort by centimorgan size. Thanks. I watched the whole thing!

Tree Tags: My favorite!! Just need more than 80 custom tags, I'm very specific :)
I'll pass that feedback along, Carly. Thanks! 😊
Feedback - add an emoji code field instead of Suffix and built in emojis for easier coding Nate as of my copy / paste steps.
I enjoyed learning a more in-depth look at the mapping feature.
I LOVE the new tools, I am working on memory books for my family with pictures of all the holidays through the years. I am excited to add a fan of their line to the front page of each book.
What a great idea. ❤

51:06 begins enhanced shared matches [or shared matches of shared matches]
The thing I learnt was missing sources, what a great feature
This is a very helpful episode! Thank you! I learned a lot about pro tools!
Descendancy Reports and how to increase the font size! Also a reminder about the Vertical Tree View. LOVE Pro Tools!
Crista, thank you for this session. I have been thinking about taking out a pro tools subscription for some time now and this video just about sealed the deal. I love all that you showed within the maps in pro tools. The detail! Wow. Just showing me that alone...I will be signing up for pro tools. Thank you!
Thanks for nerding out with me about the map. ❤

I love a good research list. Glad you found some helpful tips, Lesley.
It would be great if generation charts could highlight my DNA connections back to common ancestors or from those common ancestors to my DNA matches.
Thank you. I learned you can sort your shared match. Nice! Now I can see the order of my DNA match from highest to lowest 😊
So pleased to hear that you found this helpful, Lori. ❤
@CristaCowan Wow! My tree rates @ 9.3. Thanks for the other tip about tagging. I have never tagged. So many Brick Walls in my tree.
I excited to start using the mapping feature!
It's a lot of fun. Let me know what you discover.
For the reports, I'd love the flexibility to choose the data in a report, and I'd love to be able to print a person's full life story, similar to the life story option on each person's page.

I use the browser version on my phone and iPad, so still able to use tags when out and about.
Ahnentafel is German for Ancestors Tabel
Love your content. I watched the recording.
Thank you so much! I learned some new ways to use my fan charts.
Hooray! Glad you are here. 😉
Great info. Question: can we (or when will we be able to) export filtered lists as CSV files?
Learned about drilling down in the maps feature. Thanks
Custom tree tags... really!?! Wish I would have known about this sooner :) I'm also excited about the list view / filters. My tree is currently at a rating of 8.9%, can't wait to get it to a 9.5%!!
I learned about the Heat Map on the fan chart and what the other mapping feature can do
I didn’t know that you could look at your fan chart using the heat map of sources. Very cool!
I learned about filtering the map view. Thanks😊
You are very welcome! 👍
I am excited about the fan features; would it be possible to add a task button?
Love the shared matches of matches pro tool. It’s worth the cost all by itself!
I think being able to find the most common tree surnames in the shared matches between you and a target person would be the key to identifying hidden lines and wife's surnames.

Found out that you can now sort your DNA shared matches in Pro Tools. Thanks
Thanks! Map and filters
Yes. The Pro Tools map uses all of the dated events you have entered into your tree whether you have told it to include them in LifeStory or not.
I use Family Tree Maker as well as Ancestry. What tools for charts and reports does Pro Tools offer that I don't get with FTM?
❤am watching a recorded version. Can I use mapping feature to list every one who lived near Cortland Nebraska between 1863 and 1940? We have been clipping the local newspaper to build a
Data about our town because we will be 150 yrs old in just a few years
Oh, your rolled down and you have so many more granular tags-awesome. I think I'm going to write some of those down. Great info Crista!
Is there more Zoom with Crista Cowan on wed's coming up
Hi Jane - The next one is on December 11th. And then we've got a bunch more planned for January and February. I can't share links in comments on TH-cam for some reason. But, if you find me on Instagram or Facebook and send me a private message, I can send you the link to register.
I've used Descendary Report to share with family.
That's great, Roberta. 😉
Are pro tools available on Ancestry UK?
Yes. Anyone with any level of Ancestry family history subscription (even in the UK 😉) can purchase the Pro Tools add on.
I just got pro tools so I wanted to know what I can do with it
How can you fix the locations in your tree so that poorly formatted location no longer show?
When adding a record with a location and it’s only a city state for instance, be sure to click into the location field and search for the county, state, USA, for example. Note some states have more than one county for a city name in which case you may need to do research to determine which is the correct county in that state for the city your ancestor belongs to.
If you already have records on your tree, then use the edit button for the fact. Click into the location field and use the standardized place names in the drop-down to add the county name in and perhaps country. Hope this makes sense
Learn fan chart from any profile and to go back to main person😊
I sat through an hour of discussion of lists and maps hoping you would get to the portion of your talk on DNA shared matches. Finally, there it was in the last two minutes, and it was barely covered. Maybe next time you can state the general content of your talk up front, including what you are not going to get to. Good job on the lists and maps, but they are not what I care about the most.
One branch of my family goes to the 1600s. Since that is more than 7 generations, what would be the best way to set that up?
Can you download the maps?
You can take screen shots of them. I use a tool called Snagit to do that on my PC.
Hi Crista, Can I print from Maps? Thank you.
Sometimes the pro tools indicates there is a duplicate, but it doesn't bring up the duplicate?
I agree with your feeling about your name. I'm the only one who spells Christy my way as well :)
Which errors would you work on correcting first?
How do I download a list, for example, of people who are possible duplicates? (You did say you love checklists.)
