    To think those are totally live vocals. He's the real deal.

    • @martinj.hammersmith8512

      The vocals were not live, only the finger snaps were.

      @@martinj.hammersmith8512 How do you know this? The vocals don't match the record.

    • @sachacoronel3828
      @sachacoronel3828 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      It's live vocals, just hear the dynamics and compare with the original record.

      @martinj.hammersmith8512 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@tsicby Well, where is his monitor? Where is the mic? The music has to be coming from somewhere, perfectly mixed with his voice, with prominent finger-snaps coming over the same channel, ostensibly, as his voice.
      But look, there are no wires coming off of him, he's free as a bird, and this is 1965. The prominence of the finger snaps, and his complete freedom of movement means it was probably a boom mic. With the guy moving all over the room, picking up his finger snaps, but his voice would not have been able to remain so consistent with a boom mic moving around like that. The distance to the mic would vary. He even climbs up on stuff! His finger snaps fade in and out, but not his voice?
      In 1965, most live singers stood at a mic and didn't wander too far unless they carried the mic with them.
      Nobody is suggesting that this was the official recording of the song. He likely recorded it for the show in the studio, then they played it back as he mimed to it.
      It's 1965, no shame in that, but those weren't live vocals on the spot. That's kind of obvious, no? Just watch the performance closely, and note how the levels stay the same while he moves all over the place.
      Still a good rendition of the song.

    • @tsicby
      @tsicby 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@martinj.hammersmith8512 I know this is going to blow your millennial mind, but the music is live. The Ed Sullivan Show recorded with a live orchestra. The orchestra is playing behind the cameras right in front of Tom Jones. The audience is seated in stands that rise above the orchestra and is watching a projection of the live show above the stage (notice when Ed Sullivan looks high up to address the audience when he announces Tom Jones). The show had sound monitors hung from the same galley as lighting aimed at the performer. The mic is on a boom over his head. Look, I don't think you understand how many people tuned in to the Ed Sullivan Show every week. With only 5 or 6 channels on TV at the time, 40 to 50 million Americans tuned in to watch his show every week. That's an enormous amount of ad revenue for the network and they had the production budget of a major Broadway musical to say the least. I worked at studios in Hollywood and spent a lot of time in the audience of talk shows and variety shows so, while I'm not old enough to have been in the Ed Sullivan audience, I've seen this kind of set up with my own eyes and, in fact, there are publicity stills from the show online showing this. But the idea of a boom mic following Tom around on stage just to record the fingersnaps while he moves his lips around in silence is all the proof I need to know that you have no idea what you are talking about. Get off the internet and stop making shit up.

      @GarudaMan9 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lip-synching isn't necessarily a condition of not being able to sing, especially in the 1960s when record labels were sometimes apprehensive about what live mixes of hits they were trying to promote might sound like on TV. Some artists will lip-synch AND sing live during different songs in the same set (see: The Jackson 5 on The Hollywood Palace)

      @beemrdon52 Auto tune, lip syncing and bands that can’t play live without tech is not the real thing. Not sure how old you are, but do a little research into the subject. There are many artist that are real professionals that still do it, but unfortunately there are too many that don’t because they can’t.

I decided to create a more private account just to reach out to my dear fans due to the fact that my official accounts are being handled by my management. I couldn’t just scroll pass your beautiful comment without appreciating your support over the years. I must say it gladdens my heart to know I have fans like you.

      Written by Gordon Mills his manager and with a little help from Gordon's wife...
      He got Tom to do a rough country-type demo of this song without the big brass backing and gave it to barefoot British female singer Sandy Shaw to consider. She said the guy demoing it should sing it.
      Gordon found Tom at his wee London flat with, as he described, "a face as long as a fiddle" and demanding to be THE one to sing this song or else he was packing up and going home to Wales. Tom later said he had a very strong gut feeling about the song. Gordon agreed to Tom's demand, rearranged the song with the big brass sounds and a pre-Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page doing the lead guitar solo as a session player, and the rest is history...

      Hello amazing 🤩 😻 fan
      Recently,I made up my mind to reach out to some of my fan here on TH-cam, this is something I’ve not really been doing but I just realized it’s a necessity and also amazing to reach out to my amazing fans here on TH-cam who has been showing me endless love and support all these years. I made out time to go through the comment section in my official TH-cam channel and also some of the channels created by my fans and I’ve seen a whole lot of fans who have been showering me with lots of love and support. I decided to create a more private account just to reach out to my dear fans due to the fact that my official accounts are being handled by my management. I couldn’t just scroll pass your beautiful comment without appreciating your support over the years. I must say it gladdens my heart to know I have fans like you.
      Thanks for being such a devoted fan.
      Much love from me to you dear fan❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

    If you cannot tell this is live. You need to listen and observe a few things. His hand claps, His voice cracking. He doesn't go for the high notes at the outro like he does on the record. His voice is not carrying
    or echoing Only in certain areas of the stage. The orchestra overwhelms
    him a few times , but not much. And still he belts it out like a champ.
