    Hi Jenny! Just wanted to say that here in Argentina you must go to those “flight attendants academies” or you won't be able to fly! At the end of the training they give a licence that will allow you apply for an airline, even at internarionals such as american, if you are planning to be based in the country, you need the licence or otherwise you won’t be even able to apply. Just thought it would be an interesting fact to tell! Looking forward to the other 3 videos xoxo

    • @jennyyernstt
      @jennyyernstt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      We gained our license after taking training with the airline, so that's why it's not necessary here (and typically a waste of time and money).

    • @jennyyernstt
      @jennyyernstt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Thank you! Obviously, I'm not an expert at how this process is handled in different countries, so thank you for putting that out there so others know!
      To anyone else reading this: PLEASE look into what the process is and what is required in your own country! It's going to vary for everyone! 🤗

      Agustina Alvarez here in Brazil too...we study 4 month in academy...before to be hired...there we trainning for 2 month more again! But I think is very important to learn a lot about our carreer.

    I work in HR, and it’s hard for me to imagine expecting someone to do 5-8 weeks of job-specific training without pay!!! That seems so wrong, and I don’t know of any other industry where that would be okay. It should be illegal.

    • @jennyyernstt
      @jennyyernstt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      I think it's because they cover the cost of our hotel and the majority of our food while we're there. I agree though, training should be paid even then.

    • @roxcyn

      Mcwatsington - That's crazy, too. I guess since they pay your accommodations.

    • @corleighjean5257
      @corleighjean5257 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It’s unfortunately quite more common across other careers too. I did 25 weeks of mandatory unpaid interning as a teacher before I could get my teaching license
      ...in fact I had to pay $2000 to do it on top of accommodations.
      Nurses and health care professionals are in the same boat...
      It should definitely be illegal!!!!!

    Great video Jenny! 😊 I just wanted to add a few things as I'm currently an Australian based flight attendant:
    -As you said, Glassdoor is amazing for reviews, but it is also _amazing_ for finding our what the interview process is like, & what type of questions may be asked, for each airline.
    -As you mentioned, the flight attendant training academies are not only, in my opinion, a waste of time, but they can also work against you. You basically have to unlearn and then relearn when you eventually do get into an airline's ground school, because every airline's training is different.
    -Lastly, if you live in Australia, the pay isn't too bad for flight attendants (AU$44-48k starting salary) & as far as I'm aware, every airline here has paid ground school.
    Hope this helped someone ☺️✈️🌏

    • @jennyyernstt
      @jennyyernstt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank you!! I knew Glassdoor has interview questions, and I'll be talking about that during my next video (which is about interviews). And I definitely agree that those training academies can work against you! I trained with people who previously worked for a different airline and they said it was so hard going through training a second time and trying to erase what was already engrained in them.

    • @samanthawebbb
      @samanthawebbb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jenny Ernst That's it! I feel like it's better & easier to learn with a fresh mind, rather than un-learning & relearning.
      Glassdoor is probably the best for getting a good overview of a company, its probably half the reason I got a job as an FA!
      Look forward to the rest of the series! 😊💕

    I’ve applied to be a flight attendant in the past. I hear many airlines will reject applicants who don’t have a passport, and some airlines will invite you to an interview, and if it’s an in-person interview invite, I hear they’ll reject you if you show up without a passport, and then some airlines will say get your passport by the time you start training if you’re selected. If I look into it again, I will apply for a passport before doing anything.

    Correction: spirit airlines is also based out of DTW, and I wouldn’t say it is a regional airline, because they do travel to some international destinations as well as national destinations. So, it’s not true that Delta is the only one based out of there. Also, Alaska Airlines does fly into a lot of destinations domestically, even places like Hawaii. They’re pretty impressive!! A lot of their bases are out in the west coast though, but you’d be surprised. I flew with them from PDX to FLL and they fly into so many airports. I see them everywhere.

      Six years is pretty good, however, previous work experience isn’t the ONLY thing that is taken into consideration. Most companies also have you answer a bunch of various questions during your application that focus on the flight attendant job duties as well as the lifestyle. At the end of the day, there’s only one way to find out if your application goes through or not: you just need to apply.

    What if someone is working from home in IT, and they want to be a part time flight attendant and only want to work on weekends. And money is not something which matters to them when it comes to be flight attendant . What would you suggest .

  • @Stokie99
    @Stokie99 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm guessing its better to be a flight attendant in America because there are more airlines to choose from, but in Australia, there are only 2 main airlines (QANTAS & Virgin Australia) and only one flies internationally. there are 2 others (JetStar and Tiger Air) that are each owned by the 2 main airlines.

    I'm actually looking forward to be a pilot but I want to get my degree from a US university as it is not offered as a college degree in my country. I was also interested on maybe becoming a FA for maybe 2 years to be able to earn some money but here in south america airlines don't train their flight attendants, they have to go throught outside training just as flight schools and that would end up costing a couple thousands, which is totally not worth it because here FA get paid as little as $6000 to $8000 usd per year

    Hi Jenny! I live here in CLT! I will be applying for American next year. I will be retiring from the Fire Dept here in CLT so i will have an income and ive always wanted to be a FA and have many FA friends and a few couple Pilot friends who work for American and Delta. Is it hard to get based in CLT? I hear that its a senior base and of course it was a usairways base before the merger. I will go whereever they base me but will have to commute as i love Charlotte and yes, i know commuting is tough, but if i like the base i get so be it, but if i put in a transfer it will most likely be back to CLT unless i get lucky and get it out of training, which you never know IT COULD HAPPEN , based on operational need. Also, are you on straight reserve here in CLT?

    How old do you need to be to work as a flight attendant internationally does it depend on the Airline for your age? And when you said moved to a different country what did you mean by that? Like just temporary move for the trip?

    Hi Jenny! Great video! I am currently waiting to get my passport (expecting it in the next few days) and will then be applying to a few airlines! As of now, I would love to work for an airline that allows me to see the world, like you mentioned! Not just the US. I also live in Phoenix- and I have an interest in being based here. Of course it is never for sure and you can't always choose. So let's say I got based somewhere else randomly like Atlanta for example. How does that work? Will I need to get an apartment there? I ask because I know many people stay in hotels... is it worth it to get a place somewhere when I will essentially never be home? I am a bit confused about that! Thank you!

    Hey I am thinking of becoming a flight attendant but what should you do if you own a pet in somewhat. Last night I just applied for Frontier. I live in Syracuse New York. The airlines that come to Syracuse is American, delta, United, southwest, Allegiant, and frontier. Not sure if I missed something but yeah. I don’t mind relocating but if I got hired by frontier and Syracuse is my home base for the time being I would still live with my parents to save money.

    Hi, Jenny! Thank you for such an informative video, I am an aspiring flight attendant. I was wondering if you could tell me if there is a vision requirement? I have 20/20 vision with both eyes open, 20/20 in my left eye, but I have a lazy eye thats in the process of slowly getting better. I heard that something like this could hinder my opportunity.
