Okay my brain is going to break, can I just keep saying one times one is one and call it a day?
i don't get it, it's so simple why don't Eric just say look mein,
3x1=3 because 1+1+1=3
2x1=2 because 1+1=2
1x1=1 because 1=1 it's just one, one fucking time.
3x0=0 because 0+0+0=0
@@Incosmia I think 3 x 0 = 0 since it doesn't happen any times
@@Magjee it's the same thing the order of operations does not affect results
Okay. I was great at math. Now I realize I’m an idiot.
This is basic abstract algebra of groups, rings, and fields. A group is a set of elements, say {a, b, e} and binary operator that takes two of those elements, and gives you an element of the group. So for example, the additive group of numbers with 3 elements, let's use '+' as the binary operation. Here's our addition table.
a + e = a
b + e = b
e + e = e
You can clearly see that 'e' represents the additive identity, or '0'
a + a = b
a + b = e
b + b = a
You can clearly see that 'a' is '1' and 'b' is 2, and this is just addition modulo 3.
But you can also do this for multiplication, '*', and the 'e' works out to be '1' when you create the multiplication table modulo 3.
In short, addition and multiplication are both groups with a binary operative and an identity element. You can make them one to one. And the way you can do this with real numbers is with exponents.
So you all know that if you multiple two numbers raised to the same power, it ads the exponents right? e.g.
2^3 * 2^2 = 2^5, that is 8*4 = 32, or 2*2*2 * 2*2 = 2^5.
The inverse of this is the logarithm:
ln (2^3) = 3 ln 2
ln (2^2) = 2 ln 2
So if you add two logarithms:
3 ln 2 + 2 ln 2 = 5 ln 2
And reverse the logarithm with e^x, you get 2^5.
That is, logarithms convert addition into multiplication.
There is no possible way Terrence's bs makes any consistent sense.
It's an embarrassment to have him debating someone like Eric, because I highly doubt Terrence knows what the held an isomorphism even is.

Dewy decimal system 😂
Went from 1x1 to selling cats to N. Korea is wild 🤯
He literally says "I understand 1x1 is one, one time" If he understands that then why is this argument taking place?
He wants to change math, not correct it. He has some kind of physics math he's trying to figure out or something.
He says he understands the concept of having one thing one time. However, I'm pretty sure he doesn't know what the associative property is which he's referring to has the associative principle. The associative property doesn't say anything remotely close to what he asserts. So his disagreement comes from his own misunderstanding. I believe his argument is that his version of the associative principle says that if you multiply two positive integers then you're really just taking the first number and adding itself a number of times equal to the second integer. If that was true, then 1x1 would equal 2...but that's not how the associative property works. Now, if he's referring to something else, then maybe he just conflated addition and multiplication. I don't know.
"I understand" has become a defense mechanism to deflect accepting wrong. So many people don't use it correctly.
@@tykejack You do take 0, and then you add the first number a number of times equal to the second number (or vise versa).
But that's not what he's saying. He's trying to think of it "in objects", and if you "mutliply 1 dollar times 1 dollar", you "lose a dollar" if the result is 1 dollar, which "can not be, because you're losing the energy of 1 dollar".
He has an idea of an idea that is so undefined that it offers no opportunity for scrutinization. You're giving him too much credit thinking that there's some actual logic to this shit.
addition is adding two values together.
multiplication is putting a value in a copy machine and asking how many copies you want.
you want zero copies, you get zero copies.
you want 1, you get one copy.
you want 2 copies, multiply it by two.

Former math major here: To spell out what Eric is saying at the beginning for those interested, he starts with ln(a) + ln(b). Then when he says take the exponential, he means take all of that and put it in the exponent with e as the base: e^(ln(a) + ln(b)). By a property of exponents, this equals e^(ln a) * e^(ln b). But when raising a number to the power of a logarithm with the same base (e in this case, which is the base of the natural log), they cancel out leaving only the input to the natural log function. So e^(ln a) * e^(ln b) = a * b.
Thanks for this. So how did Eric use this example to disprove 1x1=2 ?
@@waitin4thateeeeeeeg log(1)=0. Therefore log(1) + log(1) = 0. Since e^(log(a) + log(b)) = a*b then e^0 = 1 * 1 and e^0 = 1, thus 1*1 = 1.
By showing that mathematically speaking, the law of addition and the law of multiplication use the same system (isomorphic). 4x3 = 4+4+4 = 12. So if you want to change multiplication, you would have to change addition as well. But Terence agreed addition has no problem, so by extension he has to agree multiplication has no problem either.

No, he's just an INTJ personality type.
INTJ personalities' major function is Introverted Intuition (Ni). This function involves focusing on future possibilities, abstract thinking, and deep understanding through patterns and concepts. It drives INTJs to see the big picture, envision long-term goals, and make connections between seemingly unrelated ideas.
However, this often leads to experiencing a sense of knowing something without being able to explain how they know it due to their dominant Introverted Intuition (Ni). This function allows them to unconsciously synthesize information and identify patterns, leading to insights and conclusions that can seem to come out of nowhere. This can make their knowledge appear almost intuitive or instinctive, even if the logical process behind it isn't immediately clear to them or others.
As a fellow INTJ, this happens to me a lot, and can be rather frustrating, but it's not that we're not paying attention or anything like that.

@JuniperThings579 it's because eric is way more intellectual than terrence and he hasn't got the brain capacity or knowledge to challenge him, if he could have, he would, he's done it to plenty of people that didn't understand what he was talking about, terrence is smarter than the average person, but goes like eric are at the elite level, terrence is barely a novice in these fields
@@chrisfricker7025 Terrance is being open to criticism and opinions about his work. He states it multiple times.

Eric Weinstein: The exam
Terrence Howard: My brain in the exam
I’ve seen lots of crazy people but this guy is beyond crazy. He needs a whole mental institution for himself with 10 000 doctors visiting him every 10 minutes just to keep him from not going exponentially more crazy by the day.

That whole explanation by EW was way over the top to explain 1x1=1. He should have kept it super simple and asked TH to explain why he thinks it equals 2. He also should have questioned TH on why he thinks it contradicts conservation of energy or his action/reaction crap.
TBH I majored in math and I checked out there as well... :)
@@wrc1210 I think most of us who are trashing Terrence have a mathematics or engineering background, but yea in fairness Eric’s explanation just needlessly overcomplicated everything
Eric, you've gotta wear corn rows bro!!😂😂😂
When we know 10% more than the people around us, we're Eric Weinstein. When the people around us are Eric Weinstein we're quickly reminded that really we're Terence Howard. We all do it and we know that's the deal whereas Terence Howard is having his awakening publicly. His public word-salads will be replaced by sobering reflection when he's lying in bed at night and soon enough he'll withdraw into something to fill the void - expect rehab, or religious revalation in the near future.
Wow. Well said. I felt this, because I too am guilty. It’s good when I’m quiet and know my place in the world. Nice one. Thank you for saying. 👍
If Terrence truly wants someone of an equal genius to his own to partner up with I would recommend Gary Busey.
I fucking just laughed out loud
I spat my tea out reading this
Terence is all over the place. He'll throw in things like the dewey decimal system which has more to do with libraries which is totally irrelevant to his argument.
he loves to name drop and talk long meandering walks down history line anything to avoid being put on the spot
The fact that Eric didn’t fall on the floor laughing and call him a fool is a testament to his character and his desire to teach Terrence how math actually works.
Lol that cracked me up
Eric caught that too and was like “the dewey decimal system.. 🤦♂️”
Yeah, it is a dead giveaway to literally everyone even those that don't understand what Terrence Howard is talking about. It takes one Google search about "Dewey Decimal System" and everything he says falls apart. He just memorizes things just to memorize.
What astounds me is that there are people here who actually are contemplating anything that Howard says, it’s high school level mathematics here.
Our school system has failed us
The whole episode is disturbing to me. Entertaining, but also very disturbing.
Adding piano and a few copyright free pictures doesnt make this profound or make Terrance make any sense
Education vs "I did my own research"
he didn't do research
Hahahahahah. That whole "do your own research" schtick is code for *garbage*.
Eric mostly did his own research, of course, since the education system failed him miserably, faith in ' education ' is not smart
That really is the perfect way to deceive what is happening here. He does talk like a flat earther
Terrance didn't do any research.
"Multiplication is exaggerated addition". He is like a child glancing at times tables for the first time.
Terrence is the perfect example of a narcissist who says something and will never admit they’re wrong
The piano music in the background is a lovely touch
There was an episode of Buffy where one of the young vampires was talking about his cool new computer setup. The problem was that the writers clearly had NO idea what they were talking about. As a future tech who was going to school to learn more about the subject at the time, but was already somewhat knowledgeable, it was just a bunch of gibberish. That's what Howard sounds like to anyone who understands even basic math and science.
It’s like when The Big Bang Theory had an episode about World of Warcraft and everything they said made almost literally no sense. It’s clear no one who was writing it actually had any knowledge, it seemed more like they just read an article on Wikipedia and tried to synthesize what they thought they understood
Most shows are like that

Eric is such a good guy. No superiority complex. He could have easily been dismissive here but he is is aware he's not just politely teaching Terrance a lesson in mathematics, but also Rogans audience.
He definitely has a superiority complex. He explains things in such a weird way. Over explains the simple things and uses terms that you would only understand if you’ve studied physics/math like they are everyday words.
He is also being nice however. The 2 traits are not mutually exclusive
@@WarmEmpanadait's because we all know how Terrance would act at any perceived signs of disrespect.
How can you teach a man that is not your student … uneven discussion/debate?!
@@WarmEmpanadaYes, he intentionally uses complicated terms although it could be said in much simpler words. Especially in his previous apperances on the podcast.
Eric has an inferiority complex... just look and listen
2 dudes talking exactly the same. Saying the same thing. Which is nothing.
I hear what he's saying, but 1 multiplied by 0 means that if you put zero of any items or units on the table, you end up with zero of anything on the table because it was put there zero times. Meaning never. The answer is zero because there's nothing on the table.

Im not 2 mins in, and my thesaurus is cooking 😅
The problem with Terrence‘s understanding of multiplication really doesn’t even have anything to do with math. He’s not understanding the definition of multiplication. Multiplication doesn’t just mean to make something bigger. It’s taking an object and basically saying how many of those particular objects you’re looking at if you’re looking at one object that means there can only be one so 1×1 is 1… if you’re looking at two that means it’s 2, 1×2 is two. The dude does not need to go into logarithmic mathematics explain a simple misunderstanding of the definition of multiplication.
If Terrance believes in the additive identity 0, bringing up logarithms and exponentials was to show that 0 additively is the same as 1 multiplicatively, thus creating a contradiction in Terrance’s beliefs (I.e. 0+x = x iff 1•x = x).
It's so weird because sometimes TH seems to understand the criticisms like when he says at 2:50, "Now I understand, you're seeing one 1 time." But then somehow he gets it all muddled when he gets into applied math like physics or accounting. It's so frustrating watching people trying to explain it to him because no matter what tact they take, he's just so stubborn it just goes in one ear and out the other and he just goes on spouting his nonsense. Sometimes I'm screaming at the screen, no explain it like this! He can't NOT get it! ! But the reality is there is no way to pull him out of his fantasy world.
Exactly what I was thinking, Terrance needs a 3rd grade teacher to explain to him basic math, not a scientist. Eric was talking way over my head so I know Terrance had no idea what he was talking about. And he was too nice. A dollar times a dollar is nonsense, just say that. A quarter times a quarter, you are literally using two different meanings of the term quarter together and thinking it is profound when it is obviously nonsense. Stop beating around the bush and tell him he's wrong. I don't think Terrance was learning anything here.
@@nateethington76 lol… yeah he was making it way too complicated. If parents can’t understand, even the most basic mathematical concepts he’s not understanding the jargon that was being directed his way. 😂😂😂
@@chrismeeks7707 Yeah, I agree that it’s overly complicated; Terrance doesn’t know the meaning of the terminology, so he won’t be able to follow how it’s used (you’d need to have some exposure to group theory).
Realistically, I think Terrance provides an easy to follow refutation of himself in his book on the very first page, when he says “the number two is divided by one, twice” he completely undermines what he wrote above it “2/1 is the inverse operation of 1x1 = 2” in that Terrance is now claiming 2/1 = 2, and rearranging he would get 2 = 2x1, which is a contradiction because 2 = 2x1 = (1+1)x1 = 1x1 + 1x1 = 2 + 2 = 4
The Dewey decimal system has to do with card categorization in a library. So how do you go from the categorization of books, to currency, to the flower if life, to knowledge of the gods? One of my favorite interviews
