Well, as Elon Musk said- they won't reach their goals of AGI if they don't go private and get a LOT more money. That's why he tried to take them private himself. In fact, he also agreed that the code didn't need to be open source, just that the product should be available for everyone. This was before they told him no and he later found out just how far they had come. You know, when he started throwing a hissy fit and began making fun of their name and situation. Hint: DATA…New data…synthetic data… «How are these new data structures being created?» Journalists never ask about this, nobody is speaking about it, and yet this will be the foundation of all future LLMs and have enormous societal impact.

No, you can't, because they are lying about how safe the technology is today. Implicit and straight up racist biases are built into the models, largely because the data they were trained on includes a lot of racist material. Ask chatGPT to generate a picture of a criminal and it will generate a black male. Ask it to generate the picture of a terrorist and it will generate a Muslim. It reaffirms harmful sterotypes, and that's the more implicit bias. Ask it to say something in the tone of an African American, and what it will spit out is straight up racist.

OpenAI hasn’t done a lot of good yet. Meanwhile DeepMind has completed 800 years of work on protein folding. Demis Haasabis of DeepMind is a better leader with clearer eyes. Anthropic is also in a better place by prioritising safety. I highly recommend you read Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom. It’s a bit outdated now (it was published in 2014 and he goes on a lot about whole brain emulation) but it’s a great survey of safety risks.
