- In this episode we plant zucchini plants in containers. Learn how to grow any squash or zucchini easily in a pot. We'll cover everything from preparing the pot with drainage, filling the pot, amending the soil, planting and mulch. This method is suited to all, even those with limited gardening space.

Great video. I listened to another youtuber and they said to plant radishes around your squashes. The borers don't like radishes. I tried it this year and I had no borers. So, either it was good luck, or it works.
What zone are you in?
I use leeks for the same purpose. Mint works, but it becomes invasive. I will try radishes this year, for the fun of it.
@@mmercier0921 Im gonna try radishes also as last year , My butternut squash and pumpkins got that mildew powdery stuff in one of our back plots , i had 1 nice butternut squash that was like 14 in big but wasnt ripe yet , so i even put a colendar over it everynight as at 1st I thought something else was eaten them as whatever it was , would eat the lil pumpkins & butternut from inside ,it chewed the veggies off the plant and eat the inside , it started eating the big butternut, but i guess it was to big , .I tried 100% cold pressed neem oil - slug and snail stuff as i saw them in the dirt ,
So this year I bought 5, 10 & 15 gallon grow bags and started my ping tung 18 inch eggplants , Scalloped squash and butternut baby squashes honey butters from Baker Creek seeds , things that grow fast an have them on my deck not down in my raised beds or pallets my husband found for us , or plots , trying to get a couple harvests before the Texas heat & humidity brings those pests .

My beans are doing amazing , along with my 300 sweet bulbing onions , should be ready to pull & cure in about 2 weeks , which will give me 3 more 4x8 raised beds to grow in , also our norlan potatoes & Kennabac whites , i have in 2 ( 4x8 raised beds - plus added extra organic fingerlings like i did last year i bought from the grocery store & let some chit / eye , Thise i planted end of August and by Thanksgiving we had a bumper crop of fingerlings, so im continuing to add another 10 gallon grow bag with fingerlings, about every 2 weeks , we have 6 bags on the pallet so the water runs out , plus will continue to have potatoes,
Next are my sweet potato slips , I will plant probably the 1st week in may as they love the heat and take 120 days .....

You can get free food grade buckets from your local grocery bakery! Most get icing in the big buckets. Ask if they can save you some or have any on hand. Most are thrown away daily that are empty. Plus the lids have a rubber seal. I use these buckets for planting, saving rain water and storage for horse/chicken feed.
Hi Scott, I never thought of drilling drainage holes in the side of the containers just the bottom. Thanks. That makes plenty of sense. Three inches from the bottom would make for a very good reservoir.
I never thought about it either until I watched others do it. Its so simple it is easily missed.
I've been container gardening for the last couple of years & I love it. I've got cucumbers & squash with my tomato cages that they climb up😀
Drainage holes on the side has really helped me keep soil damp along with mulch on top. Great tip!
I'm having a lot of luck mulching heavy with fresh rosemary clippings, completely eradicates squash bugs! Thx for the video!
That's a great idea, unfortunately I can never get enough Rosemary to grow even for kitchen use!

I try too keep my squash vines covered by mulch. It seems to slow the borers down. I would try rosemary if I had enough. I can see how the rosemary might confuse the bugs. Maybe small cedar branches would work?

To ward off root borers, wrapping strip (couple inches) of aluminum foil around stem at soil level has worked well for us.

Thanks for showing how you grow squash in pits. At That 1870’s Homestead, she wrapped her zucchini vines from where the top root is upward with athletic tape to prevent vine borers. I’m going to try that this year.
Ive had the same containers that he said would crack in 3 years and they've served me well 5 years and still kickin. And i live in Texas, the sun is BRUTAL.
My dad said his pointer loves that fish emulsion. I had to laugh! Good down to earth livin. Follow the rusted gardener as well. It's nice when you give somthing that time and care to watch what happens and what you get in return. Before ya know it, you're way more involved than you thought you would be. Hell, I can't wait for work to end just so I can get home to see how my garden is doing.

Thank you for your videos. I'm Zone 9b, northern California. I have been so lucky. The last 20 years or so I have planted my squash, no vine borers, no pests to speak of other than a few aphids. I only do containers now. Can't bend anymore. I use Root Bags and I have found them to be helpful and pretty cheap (Greenhouse Megastore). I add lots of compost. I also have two raised beds. Waist-high, lol.

Best grow container = straw bales. Best squash I’ve ever had. Put a little compost in slit with seedling. Never had bigger crops.

Hmm. I may try this. Squash is absolute favorite but every year it’s decimated by a worm that bores through the stems. We have moved them around year after year but we only ever get one or two pickings and they are destroyed. I’ve tried to find the eggs and remove them. I’ve tried to cut the affected stems and mulch over the cut part. Nothing has worked but I never tried them in a container (or hay bale!)
@@Mtkrvi06 Some Indian squash has tougher vines and seems resistant. Some of my clients grow them all summer. I just haven't experimented with any of them yet.

Glad I bumped into this video. The drilling technique for making a water reservoir is a very good idea. I’m from Manvel and the sound of the wind.. I can relate.
Our containers in cattle country are mineral buckets - but also reasonable you can cut 55 gallon barrels (food safe) in half. Or galvanized tubs from farm store work great as well - Gary has those in his garden. Also recent video from TP2 Texas Prepper 2 about various containers he is having great success with.

I’ve found that rice straw as a mulch is epic! Hard to come by though so I mostly use barley straw… I went to school for horticulture and greenhouse management, and other related things, and have found that gardening is mostly subjective, what works for me may not work for another person, so have fun with it and play around with various things. Find what works for you and stick with it while improving on what you’ve learned through experience. Comprehend and copy nature is the best advice I can give!

I just started really trying my hand at gardening. Your videos are such a blessing ❤️. I planted my yellow squash and zucchini seeds a few days ago in little peat pellets, today I transferred my 3" and 4" babies into little larger dissolvable pots. They are so beautiful and strong 💙🌞💗 there are 2 per pot so I can choose the strongest one when the time comes. I'm so proud of myself and very excited! I love doing it, it's very therapeutic. Not to mention anything from your own garden is better than anywhere else 👍😊 So thanks for sharing your knowledge and showing is how to do it from first steps to the last. It is so helpful and I'm absolutely grateful. I'll be moving right along through all your videos and happy to be a loyal subscriber 💞😄👍

We are starting to do more container gardening as we age. Yours is looking good. Use aluminum foil around the stem to help prevent borers.
I've seen Charles at Old Alabama Gardener do the foil method and think it would be pretty fool-proof. When my yellow squash gets big enough I might try it. Love your channel by the way. Especially enjoy Porch Time.
A lot of folks say that. A lot of folks are wrong.The foil does not work no matter how much you add or adapt. It may prevent them from getting into one spot one year so you may luck out but Borers moths will travel up and down the plant to find even a spec of exposed plant and lay. They can be quite the acrobats. They lay eggs on any exposed plant part, including leaves and even unopened flower buds in my experience. I tried aluminum for several years. I lucked out with some plants but they still got to more than a quarter or even half of my plants. Everyone I know who tried it said eventually they had the same experience I did too, that the first year they maybe lucked out but not down the line.
I switched to buying big bolts of cheap toile material and using tent or garden stakes to keep it from blowing away and that is 100% effective and far cheaper than bug netting or garden mesh. On my larger plants I do not cut the toile, I leave it on the bolt and just unravel more as it grows as needed. You can find discount clearance toile for super cheap. I just lift the material to pollinate squash myself since I am only growing about 5 varieties and 20 plants or less total. Far better and more time efficient than the daily search for eggs I was doing before during the 9 month growing season and digging for borer grubs in plants not to mention adjusting and reapplying the foil. The toile is also super effective at keeping bunnies, squirrels and deer off of your fruit, veggies and plants so long as you secure it with the ground stakes or tie it using string or bread twists to vertical stakes, etc.
There are also reusable yellow/green traps or and even some white ones you can buy that use hormone or pheromone lures that help to eliminate the borer population. I am looking into those.
The soap water in yellow bowls doesn't work. If 1 manages to fall in by some miracle 20 more won't so that's not very effective.
@@bobbilinn4712 we have since had good success with using liquid phosphorus from Dr earth. I'm not sure if it's the horrible scent it gives off or what but I had zero squash bugs and vine borers last year on all my squash plants.

Have any of you tried planting strongly scented plants along with your squash? I've been growing lemon verbena for several years, and haven't found any bugs that are willing to attack it, so I'm going to try some around my more susceptible plants this summer. Basil might work, but I have to keep my basil in pots on plant stands where the slugs can't reach them.

We add wood chips to the bottom of the pots we have to retain water and to reduce the weight of the posts they are easier to move. To reduce the loss of "N" we add some green grass clippings and/or kitchen scraps. After getting the plants in and settled we add the mulch to help retain the water. At the end of the season, we dump the pots into the compost pile and start over again next year. Great video

I’ve found some good containers at the livestock supply stores like Gebo. Made strong for feeding livestock, yes more expensive; but made to last.

I was held up potting plants because I had no way to drill holes.in my pots. I saw someone use a soldering iron. I found one for $10 and it worked like a charm. Now I think I will go back and put holes in the sides. So glad I found your vid!

I start my first 3 plantings indoors and succession plant squash every 10 days from early May to late June. Keeps me in squash til October. Whenever we have excess we dehydrate. Great in soups and casseroles.

Melissa Brunson Yes I saw his foil method. I think I will try it with my yellow squash and see if it helps.
this year I have a huge bed of volunteer French marigolds and I'm cutting them and laying them all over and around my squash plants to see if that will fool the borers. It's still too early for the borers here in HTX (any day, now ...), but it's worth a try. I've tried just about every other suggestion.

Grabbed some baskets at the dollar store for my “pot” used a soldering tool to make my drainage holes! Works perfect for my cucumbers and zucchini and it’s cheap. ☺️☺️☺️☺️
Soldering tool is great for making holes. I used one for my fig capsules when I started cuttings in solo cups.
Was there any reason you chose to grow cucumbers and zucchinis in pots as opposed to in the ground?
J NYC there are “Bush type,” varieties in different vegetables that don’t sprawl and are perfect for containers

WOW! I used the exact same blue pits from Walmart last year for my squash too with the fish fertilizer and the dr earth too. They are going to grow just so good! You actually can leave the other plant in there with his buddy. I did and it grew as well! Happy planting!🌿🌺

Yeah Charles is a good gardener and I like his channel. He does the foil wrap to plants he starts in soil blocks, I may do that when mine come up.

Yes, old Alabama Gardner, the aluminum foil trick has been working for me. I have never had squash grow so well. And that one video was so worth watching. It is the first time this year that I have tried it and holy cow I cannot believe how great my squash looks.
Also, my kids both thought I was insane for doing the foil trick. I showed them today why it is working. And they were both shocked. I’m glad I taught them something today. Thanks to that wonderful video.

Interesting video, thank you. Although most gardeners I've seen do NOT mulch zucchini/squash. First, the squash bugs LOVE to hide in mulch. Second, a big bushy squash plant already shades the dirt below, thereby acting as its own mulch.

People have often commented asking why I use so much slow release fertilizer AND fertilize on a regular schedule with water soluble fertilizer. Its because these plants use up so much nutrients. They are indeed heavy feeders.
Scott Head Thank you so much for this video! I have three zucchini and one squash in containers. They look pretty pale. I fed them with fish emulsion about three weeks ago but they didn’t seem to love it. They look pretty worn out. Can I put a dry fertilizer on the surface of the soil and water it in? I have bonemeal and another standard all-purpose fertilizer (5 3 3). I also have fish fertilizer if they’d like that better.

I find I get bigger squash from the ground but containers are definitely great if you don't have much space or live in an apartment.
Yeah running low on space and with this year's herbicide disaster, I may be stunted for 2-5 years now in my soil. SO containers will play a more important role in the garden at least for a while.

@@pattyflorescintron2439 a lot of people will say 10 gallons or more. I did a 5 gallon felt grow bag last year and it did better than my in ground ones! I did have to fertilize it more though.

I planted nasturtiums and onions with my squash and broccoli plants as I've read they help repel those evil little bugs. I'm hoping it's true, but I won't know for sure as it's still too early. Good luck with your plants. :)

Never thought of the mulch on the bottom! What a great idea! And I never thought of making a water reservoir of the bottom three inches. I use food grade 5 gallon buckets, but they are lacking in the aesthetic department... Here in the alpine desert water is kind of a big deal, and everything dries out quicker than you can get it wet sometimes. I'll look if you have one, but I would love a video about how you make your potting soil mixes.
I do have potting mixes among some videos, but here's what I use frequently for general purpose. 1 part peat moss, 1 part compost, 1 part perlite (you might want to use vermiculite too to help retain moisture, or bump up the compost). Sometimes I use bagged potting soil (usually Kellog's brand, its cheap and seems real nice) but will add some perlite to it.

SO on the squash, I use a small trellis that goes up about 5 feet and train the vines skyward that gives me more room. I do the same with melons and cukes and even pumpkins for the medium size varieties.
Yes, I trellis them vertically when I plant in beds. :-)
