  • Growing squash is actually fairly simple. You can get a gigantic harvest of wonderful squash in just under three months. I'll show you how to begin your plants from seed and how to grow them up into bountiful garden producers. I will cover everything from soil requirements, seed sowing methods, plant care, fertilization, harvesting, and common pests. I hope that the frustration caused by the squash vine borer moth doesn't stop you from getting your plants off on a good footing early in the season, you will see that you can still get a harvest even when you are experiencing a heavy pest pressure.

Never had boars or cuc beetles last year. I believe it's because I overplanted my marigolds. And when I say overplanted, I mean they were fighting each other for space. Gonna try that again this year.

I wrap the stem with aluminum foil and that keeps the squash bore from drilling into the stem.

I keep DE sprinkled on the bottom of my squash. Also, putting worm castings on the surface around each plant helps deter vine borers and squash bugs.

I just planted squash yesterday. I'm a new gardener....at least to veggies.
Grew up a seasonal _snap & shuck hand,_ lol. My maternal family were all farmers/ranchers who grew their own food. We made rounds at harvest. Us kids prepared corn, peas, beans, okra, etc for the ladies in the kitchen...our reward, fresh hand-cranked ice cream.
The elders are all gone now...it's my turn. And I've never been on this end of food production before.

Vine powers can be discouraged by using a sugar sprinkler loaded with diatomaceous earth powder DAILY from you local pool supply.

I prefer not to as squash roots are very sensitive to being disturbed. You can try but be very careful planting the seedlings out.

I am a beginner. I planted my squash on Saturday from plants I pick up at Walmart and they were dead by Wednesday. I can never grown anything. Why can't I just plant in the ground water it let it grow. I am thinking the garneering thing was a bad idea

Man, when I was 6 I took a pumpkin and stuck it in the ground and it grew just fine you don’t have to do all those steps those are just extra steps to increase your chance but what I do it just plant straight into the ground water and leave a bowl over the ground where the seeds are. Go to Lowe’s or wherever you can buy what you wana grow and start again it’s trail and error now I’m 14 and have been relatively successful planting pumpkins in the sand and adding good quality soil on the vine of the pumpkin
