    Good overview, as usual. I remember as a kid seeing it spelled as 'Hallowe'en', i suppose as a contraction for 'Hallowed Evening', and on the decorations of my elderly (it seemed to me then) grammar school teachers. Just remembering...

    The thing I'm most grateful to the Americans for, regarding Halloween, is pumpkins because trying to carve Neeps is a journey into madness itself.In Scotland it's not called trick or treating It's still referred to as guising over here and I hope a lot of kids still preform a song or whatever for their treats.
    I agree firmly that a good Halloween should revolve around nature and the celebration of death and life, for a while in the Early Modern era In Scotland it was used as this of course but there was a lot of focus on divination and future wish making etc, which makes sense because you want a good harvest and if you have to be married you want a good spouse and good health and all of this. We've lost a lot of that now though.
    I like that with the advent of the Internet we can learn about others death celebrations and I like to give a nod to them, it's also fun to learn about death itself and the industry of it and the invention of the modern day funeral trade, I highly recommend Ask a Mortician and the Order of the Good Death if anyone is interested in that.

      Pumpkins were developed by Indigenous people in what are now the North and South American continents. They cultivated pumpkins, tomatoes, potatoes, corn, sunflowers, cacao (chocolate) and many other foods that have traveled around the world due to colonization. European-Americans only began using them during the early colonial days but they did not develop them.

    • @MissFreyja
      @MissFreyja 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gnostic268 Oh sure, I was talking about the modern era really but you are quite right that so much of the foods we enjoy around the world are brought to us by the colonisation and enslavement of the indigenous populations, much of which continues today, in more sneaky insidious ways, hidden by the white and green washing of global companies.

I would expect a farmers almanac or planting by the moon might die us more? Also, I feel that preservation, of foods etc, during this month after harvest might give a deeper or wider meaning to idea of death and not death etc. I'd love to hear your views. Best wishes Dawn

    @kavikv.d.hexenholtz3474 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    You're very correct in saying that Halloween is a very 'modern' concept.
    Halloween is _not_ a holiday that has close ties to the ancient past, nor does it have some ‘pagan’ antecedent, nor is it a continuation of several ancient pre-Christian customs.
    To say Halloween’s connections to ancient Samhain, or anything “ancient” for that matter, are, at best, extremely tenuous, would be grossly overstating the facts. Virtually all of the customs associated with the modern secular celebration of Halloween developed only in the past 500 years and have no connections to ancient pagan religious practices.
    In short, Halloween just does not have the “pagan precedent” so many people seem to want it to.
    Regarding the establishment of 1. Nov. for All Saints Day - To state it briefly, the date of 1. November for All Saint's Day was practiced in continental Europe _long_ before the date was formerly fixed by the Church to November 1st, and _long_ before said change got to what is now the UK & Ireland; which was _centuries_ after the time of Druids and Samhain proper.
    In addition, most people are not aware that Samhain itself is a _movable_ feast day; the exact date varies from year to year depending on when the autumnal equinox and winter solstice fall. In 2020, Samhain proper fell on 6/7 Nov. Samhain seems to have been associated with the ‘Seven Sisters’, the Pleiades - it is said to have occurred at the culmination of the Pleiades (when they reach the highest point in the sky). In modern times that equates to about 21.November, but in more ancient times, due to changes in the calendar, to 1.November (currently 6/7 November).
    In addition, most people are not aware that Samhain itself is a _movable_ feast day; the exact date varies from year to year depending on when the autumnal equinox and winter solstice fall. In modern times that equates to about 21.November, but in more ancient times, due to changes in the calendar, to 1.November (currently 6/7 November).
    To assert that the establishment of All Saint’s Day (and All Souls Day on 2.NOV) was the early church’s attempt to “Christianize Samhain” just does not stand to reason. Think about this logically for a moment, why would the church change a major feast day affecting _all_ of Western Christendom just to accommodate a small group of Christians who lived on, what would be considered at that time, some remote group of islands in the middle of nowhere, centuries after Druids and the observance of Samhain?
    One scholar has even suggested that November 1st may have been chosen simply so that the many pilgrims who traveled to Rome to commemorate the saints “could be fed more easily after the harvest than in the spring (when it was originally celebrated).” That certainly does not seem out of the realm of possibility. Though this may not have been the predominant reason, I’d be willing to bet it was taken into consideration and was a contributing factor in the change.
    All three holidays, Halloween, All Saint’s Day, and Samhain share a common date and perhaps a “feeling”, but that’s really about it. Indeed, so much of Halloween “feels” Pagan that attempts to connect those things to ancient Samhain simply “feels right”.

    Nature expresses itself through and pulsates between polarities like hot/cold, light/dark, male/female, birth/death, etc. Post-Zoroastrian monotheisms moralize the polarities and seek eternal life through the repression of the dark side, but both of the light/dark polarities have positive and negative aspects and need to be balanced and honored. Death is a pathway to gnosis and rebirth

    The Hill of Tlachtga in Ireland , was from 3000 years ago the sacred center for the fire festival call SAMHAIN....an Irish word , meaning harvest . An SAMHAIN , was both a time of feasting , but also of remembering the dead and protecting life on the night of the gathering from walking the earth and doing damage on this side of reality . When many Irish emigrated from Ireland in the 18th and 19th centuries to North America they took the tradition of an SAMHAIN /Halloween,with them , and from there the Trick or Treat version of this profoundly spiritual time ,emerged . For the celts , Halloween..was the end of the year , and the beginning of the new , so , as important as present day Christmas/ New year but with the difference that people were far more spiritually connected to the earth than today .On that hill, the hill of Tlachtga, protected by the Druids , the first huge fire was lite , and from the piercing of the darkness by that light on that sacred hill , others would lite their own great fires , so that the light spread across the land protecting all from the darkness . The fire protected those gathered around it from bad spirits afraid of the light . Happy Halloween everyone . Peace in Europe .

    The dark age of 536 and plague was far worse than the mid 1300s. That's when much of the romantic iconography actually came up. The sun of the summer of that year didn't shine in 90% of Europe as it was a far encroachment of glacial growth and cloud coverage that hadn't been seen in 4000 years.

      @@ArithHärger First, I would like to say that I do not agree with her 100%, and since I am not an expert on the subject, I wanted to know the opinion of a professional, in this case, you dear Arith. Secondly, what I know about her is that she is a philologist, and that she has carried out research on the origin of the word "witch" in the Pyrenees. Her thesis proposes that, according to a witch law written around 1500 A.D., the word would refer to spirits or demons, and not human beings. That deep down, witches would be beings of "otherness" and that those accused of being witches are actually "people who go with witches", that is, apprentices of witchcraft and not witches themselves. There are several presentations by Julia Carreras on TH-cam, and a website called "Occvulta". I would like to know your opinions and if her research is valid from an archaeological or sociological point of view. Thank you very much Arith for all the effort and dedication you put into your videos.

    Amei seu vídeo amor, mas o problema não é o capitalismo kkkkk e sim as pessoas que não entenderam ele rsrs. Na verdade todos os sistemas podiam ser maravilhosos, o problema é o ser humano com toda a sua sede de poder. E também um fato muito importante, pk estamos em Ano de Saturno e não rola ilusão em Saturno kkk o problema de hoje em dia não é de quem está no poder e sim os submissos que defendem quem está no poder. Na verdade ainda vivemos em uma monarquia disfarçada kkkk E essa roda precisa ser quebrada 🤘🤘🤘💜

      Thank you very much for watcing and listening and for that piece of information. Indeed I try to pronounce things as best as I can and find the best sources available. When it comes to language, it's always good to speak with those who know it, but sometimes it can be hard. Be well, friend. Hope you enjoy my other works. Stay safe out there!
