Randall Carlson is an amazing teacher. He has a way of making even the most complex topics seem like a campfire tale. I've had the great privilege of going on some geology trips with Randall and I learned more in those few weeks than in all my years of school. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join Randall on these trips and in his classes. Check out his site for dates.
The vast majority of the human story is a complete mystery. As Graham Hancock would say, "We are a species with Amnesia." We have forgotten where we came from, & therefore we have lost sight of why we're here and where we are going.
"The ancient knowledge will again abound & overflow, as water upon the earth. The remains of this knowledge are everywhere about us, in everyday use & perfect." - J. Ralston Skinner

@@JohnDoe-ef3wo From my perspective, I am not interested in EVERYTHING being bent into some Christian ideology/truth that is based on that persons "interpretation" of the bible. I do not believe in prophecy, but do see that predictions based on observation and other influences does happen. In other words, if some dude bragged about being able to grab women by their genitals...I think of my females in what I call family: I call them mom, sister, cousins, and grandma...especially when the man WAS 59 years old at the time...just a total creep (If in his early 20's, well, still clueless, but not an additional 30 years later)...that "jesus" approves of, right? mmmkay...not listening to that upside down Jesus logic.
I would argue that Christians are the source of their OWN problems with society...and I am not saying society is perfect...Christian imply that they are though.

Thank you for hosting RCarlson. I've thought about Celtic year & realize it makes more sense then current understanding of when seasons begin. The Midway points between solstices and equinoxes mark beginnings of seasons with the solstices and equinoxes marking MIDseason. Samhain marks the midway between Autumn equinox and Winter Solstice, which marks the Beginning of Winter, the darkest QUARTER of the year. Imbolc is midway between Winter Sol & Spring equinox marking the beginning of Spring; Beltane, the beginning of Summer & Lughnasadh, the beginning of Autumn. Each season has 13 weeks, with midseason being solstices & equinoxes. Currently, we are told the seasons BEGIN with the midpoints... we've lost so much understanding of marking the seasons.

As he points out, it really takes only a cursory search to learn there's religious and cultural significance to Halloween. It's sad that people will only ever learn anything if it's featured on social media, they just sit and wait for things to be delivered to be consumed without the curiosity to seek it out. I hope that changes. That being said I'm grateful this was produced and posted.

Wow! So, a couple things pop out at me. 1) The “broom-star” as an ill omen must be where the tradition of witches riding brooms came from, and 2) the quintessential ghost costume of a white sheet over the head with eyeholes cut out looks exactly like what Randall showed of a comet shooting through the sky. Fascinating stuff!! I love Randall’s lectures!

    • @whatabouttheearth

The flying of brooms motif came from testimonials at witch trials to "flying" to ritual after taking entheogens, primarily using plants of the genus Solanaceae that are hallucinogens such as Bella Donna, Datura and Mandragora (mandrake). This has been well documented. I suggest the book 'The Witches Ointment' by Thomas Hatsis. Cauldrons were used to cook up the drugs/medicines/poisons, brooms were used to clean up, and all these things were employed in rituals which used entheogens.
Thinking about it in the way you are saying it is interesting that one of the possible meanings of the name Ekate (Hekate), the Anatolian/Greek goddess of witchcraft is 'The far shooter'

I had read in the past that the festival of the hallows was celebrated by the ancient celtic cultures, and many of the current traditions started by them (and it was mostly focused in honoring dead people and scaring off evil spirits), but I had no idea that the 3 days were interconnected across many civilizations (many of which didn't know about each other by the time they started celebrating), might be the fact that spring can be seen as a symbol of life alongside summer, and fall as a symbol of death (i.e. dry grass, caduceus leaves falling, drying trees, etc.), or maybe there is really some sort of mysticism behind these particular 3 days... It's a similar concept about God and many civilizations through history sharing common ideas about God(s) and sometimes even common practices.

The typical and fanciful history of Halloween begins this way:
There once was a group of religious people called the Druids.
They practiced what we today call Halloween.
    The End.
I was never satisfied with that explanation because it failed to answer the following question-
Where and How did they come up with this stuff?
Mr Carlson does a deep dive and shares the pre- Celtic truly ancient origins of the very roots of the ancient practices of honoring and mourning the dead. The Whys, the Whos, the Wheres and the Hows.
And the significance of both the Biblical and the secular customary historical accounts surrounding a Great Flood.
    Excellent commentary.

In Welsh who follow a similar Celtic story to the Irish & Scottish , November is called "Tachwedd" meaning "slaughter" as it was the ritual slaughter & feasting of the livestock to fuel you for "the dark half" of the year - Sowain / Samhain as the Scottish / Irish refer to it. In Welsh, Halloween is "Noson calan Gaeaf" - "the winter night of the new year". This was the counter part to May's "Beltane" where again fire's were used to purify & bring in life to celebrate the emergence summer & nature's life-power. Bonfires were lit & kept to purify the air & bring light into the darkness ahead. The name Bonfire comes from "bone fires" which were stacked after the slaughter of the livestock.

If you read this, we love that we are now being included in the human story of the Americas and our ways of celebrating Creation. It’s a new tradition, Halloween and I see nothing wrong at all with a day where we honor the young! That’s what modern Halloween essentially does. Children get a voice and a choice (ideally). Honors the hedon within. All things are equal.

Sorcery riding the broom comet in the sky is an interesting metaphor.

I've been trying to research halloween and it's historical relevance for over a year now and not once had I read anything about a world wide synchronized holiday.
I had an art teacher a long time ago who described autumn as a season of death. It's when all our crops are harvested and left to die and all the foliage withers. And it comes directly before what was often the most deadly season of the year for humans. Her explanation has always had a great deal of significance in my life.

    Awesome lesson!
All Hallows Day was originally celebrated on May 13. It involved skulls, skeletons, dressing in black and praying for the dead. "Soul cakes" were baked and distributed. It was moved in 835 to be near the Day of the Dead and Samhain. My favorite theory as to why it was moved is that it was so similar to the other celebrations and those were always going to be celebrated near the end of October and start of November, for the reasons you bring up.
