The fantastic animist podcast The Emerald (you probably know it?) describes the Baba Yaga as being more symbolic of deep spirit of the hungry forest that consumes all. Not so much as a goddess to worship but as a force of the cycle of death and consumption so prevalent in the concept of “the forest.”

This was such an interesting video, and the idea of Baba Yaga being dead was a completely new one for me! It never occured to me that she could be dead or an ancestor. As for her house, even though there are many historic examples of Slavs also building stilt houses, I never connected the chicken legs to stilts but more being a crucial way of her home being mobile and moving from place to place. Since houses are the symbols of stability, the meaning of Yaga's is twofold: firstly, you cannot find Baba Yaga when you search for her, because she can move her house and is undetectable - unless she wants to meet you. Secondly, it adds to the terrifying aspect of her, because she can move and creep up on you when you are alone in the woods. That makes her both a hunter of the unwanted and the guardian of the forest.
In the Balkans, the equvalent of Yaga is another Grandmother, Baba Roga. As one commentator has already pointed out, ours is the Horned Granny, used to frighten the children away from dangerous places like wells, forests etc. I was always immensely fascinated in Baba Roga and interested in her; she didn't seem as frightening as she was mysterious. My impression was always that all Slavic wild grandmother archetypes, and also all similar wild woman archetypes from the region, like the Romanian Muma Paduri (the Forest Mother), are neither deities nor ancestors, and not even personalities as such. In our culture, they impersonate the dark und unpredicrable forces of nature, which surround human communities and in which humans are helpless, unprotected and exposed to perils of various kinds. Muma Paduri is beautiful, very deceptive and extremely dangerous; she is the enchantment of the beautiful forest, into which girls go for a mysterious and lonely transformation rite, to emerge as women. Baba Roga is never actually seen; she is the faceless darkness of all remote wild places symbolized by the power of (pre-christian) horns, while Yaga is everywhere and nowhere, wandering around unseen but seeing everything herself. To me, they always appear like shapeshifters; the very essence of the ever-changing nature. It can be beauty and death at the same time, and we can fear it or be enchanted by it, but we can never control it - and we are never safe with it, because it has endless unseen faces. Sometimes benevolent and sometimes not, the Wild Women and Grandmothers of the woods are the ones who are in control of human life and destiny, and they shift their appearance according to their own, untamed, mysterious will.

I even dream about her sometimes, like some sort of guide/ancestor. What a strong energy does she carry ❤

i've noticed over the decades, Russians that were raised under a Judeo-Christian umbrella, all tell the horrifying tales of Baba Yaga, but my Russian friends that came from neutral or even Pagan households, told stories about her that were vastly different, where Baba Yaga was more of a guide, tho she was still very brutalist in their stories of her as well.
i just find it interesting how the camp that goes on murderous crusades against people of the earth in the name of their dictator god, always lead with fear, in every era.

Hi! For the sake of completeness, I will report what I was told by a person of Slavic birth and traditions (not my personal tradition): Baba Yaga is considered by the Slavs both the goddess Yaginya in origin, and a hypostasis of the goddess Mokosh and can be considered an ancestor in all respects. So, food for thought! Thanks for the video as always !

Baba Yaga is our Pole Star from 12,000 years ago, it was known as the She Goat star, she was married to the Chief Ancestor of the underworld. On wikipedia, it shows her riding a boar while fighting a crocodile, which points to the constellations around the pole star. Draco was seen as a hippopotamus, known as a water pig, who wears the skins of the crocodile on her head, like the Wolf Warriors wore wolf skins, she is associated with healing and the death of the warrior, she is the mother of the healing god of rebirth, known as the Swine of the Pig.
The Old Crone would be associated with Scorpio, between Scorpio and Sagittarius is her big black cauldron, we call this this area the center of of galaxy, the ancient would called The Golden Gate of the Gods, Sagittarius was her husband, between him and Scorpio is the War God Zababa, which is seen as the leg of Ophiuchus, the one seen coming out of the Dark Rift. This was seen as being reborn from the underworld. Zababa is said to be the husband of Baba, or is it the younger version of him.
Orion was known as a Boar, Slaughter is the name of the star at the tip of his sword, when placed on the western horizon, Alula is found at mid heaven, meaning First Born, when Alula sits on the horizon, Vega the She Goat star takes center stage at mid heaven. mother of the Pig, known as Damu, meaning Blood, Brother and Relative, and the Pig is found holding his Club in the center of the Silver Gate of Man, between Gemini and Taurus. At the Tip of His Club you find the Sun, every year on the day of the summer solstice. The Winter Solstice Sun is found in the Golden Gate of the Gods (Sagittarius), next to the little bloody red spot Spiculum, meaning Spear. In astrology, Sagittarius is the hips and thighs, Scorpio is the sexual organ, squeezed in between is the Womb Ophiuchus, as the Speculum is the tool used by doctors, placed into the woman where babies come out, or is it the Spiculum, the Tool used by man to created the baby. ha ha ha

Baba is 'grandmother', that is why we think of her as a crone. As a child, we would be told to be good or Baba Yaga would catch us. I thought of her as being like the witch in Hansel and Gretel. As an adult, I think of her supporting discipline and honour.

Thank you Arith, I knew the existence of baba yaga since a couple of years ago. I have tried to understand her nature by the tales written on her and the analysis on those tales. Everything left me unsatisfied. I came to believe she is very ancient and has a will on her own. Not a deity. A couple of weeks ago I was trying to build a rapport with my tarot and I was at a low point so I asked for help and an old woman figure appeared next to me. I talked to her, she was silent and I asked how I should call her. She answer "baba yaga". She had a cunning smile and I had the feeling that 50% it was a joke and 50% it was true. I said to her "teach me" (the tarots) because I had the feeling that she has an extensive knowledge of things. I tried to call her on other occasions but she didn't appear and I think that she really has a strong will and does things that she wants. Imho it's not an entity you pray or make offer to. She exists in her own realm as you said. Very ancient to me, vastity of knowledge because she has seen much just by being present. More on the witchy side also, detached from humans.

I like Baba Yaga, she knows why rules matter, she even seems to have a tiny bit of a soft spot for those who trust her enough to do as she says ... immediately and correctly.
I remember several tears ago suddenly hearing people chanting her name
off in the distance, for months it went on. So of course I did some reading, never found an answer that explained why people would do that.
I was probably just a touch, touched at the time. I dunno, I do see how teaching a child to follow instructions without asking questions could be a very good thing.... Baba Yaga probably learned some pretty rough lessons on the path to becoming who she is is/was.

I haven't watched the whole video yet, but I should mention one thing about Baba Yaga. South Slavs have their own version of Baba Yaga, and we call her Baba Roga, translation: Horned Grandma, or Horned Granny. It's a common children's story, and I remember being first told about Baba Roga, and how she dwells in the well, and how I am supposed to stay away from the well and under no circumstance open the lid that was on the well or step on top of the lid because I could fall in or Baba Roga would "snatch my hand or leg, and pull me in". Of course, the story about Baba Roga was immensely effective, I always stayed away from the well and took care of myself.
I can't help but wonder if Baba Yaga used to be a thing among South Slavs before Christianity, and then after old idols were burned and crosses started to pop up around homes, Baba Yaga had to " run away and hide from God" thus she was given Horns and was tossed into the well.

One of the things I noted first and admire most about Baba Yaga is that she does not tolerate stupidity. If you want anything from her (including surviving an encounter) she will teach you something via task/object lesson. Learning curve is steep. You fail, you die. She has no patience for useless humans.

I've seen the same when it comes to Lusitanian and Celtiberian deities and other entities, and it's good to see people expanding their pagan practices and interests, and not just sticking to the same romanticisms and popular trends, but at the same time there's this tendency to turn everything into the same neo-pagan Wiccan perspective, which not only limits things quite a lot, but also overshadows the rich folklore and myths and animistic beliefs.

My thoughts is in part she might be an archetype. Just because she did symbolize one thing, it’s possible that she continues to evolve as we all do. Maybe it’s ok that now a days people see her as a goddess and the crone - and maybe that’s a powerful symbol to them. To me- she is an archetype of sorts, not as a healer really, but to wildness and the ability we all have to either bless or curse those we deal with (as she does) and the reminder that often good works and hard work and earnest work is rewarded. And the reminder to try to choose the best actions we can. The same source that gives us blessings can also give us challenges or possibly harm, as she does in the tales. So it’s good to remember these things I think. She’s in my head to remind me to be mindful of our duel natures we have as well as spirit has and that wildness too has a place. ❤

The Iazyges (/aɪˈæzɪdʒiːz/)[a] were an ancient Sarmatian tribe that traveled westward in c. 200 BC from Central Asia to the steppes of modern Ukraine. In c. 44 BC, they moved into modern-day Hungary and Serbia near the Dacian steppe between the Danube and Tisza rivers, where they adopted a semi-sedentary lifestyle.
The Boy Hero puling the Sword out of the ground (Horizon/Orion), is an Indo-Iranians legend. The Indo-Iranians were a group of Indo-European speaking peoples who migrated in waves from the 2nd millennium BC onwards. They eventually branched out into the Iranian and Indo-Aryan peoples. The Iazyges name means "To Sacrifice", Herodotus reported that the Sarmatians were said to be the offspring of Scythians who had mated with Amazons and that their female descendants "have continued from that day to the present to observe their ancient [Amazon] customs, frequently hunting on horseback with their husbands; in war taking the field; and wearing the very same dress as the men" Moreover, said Herodotus, "No girl shall wed till she has killed a man in battle."

As a november baby, I also feel november is a dull month. It is also very emotional and carries many cherished memories for me. If I did choose the timing of my own birth, it was likely for a number of reasons having to do with the abundant and, as history and my atheist spirit senses, sacred oaks that surround the land where I live, as well as the proximity to a collective queer culture. It might have just been random chance. Nonetheless, as bitter as november is, it is also sweet and is a transformative time between the golden time of year and the darkest time of year. It is as important as it is hard.

I would say so, and not simply talking about some of my personal perspectives, but looking into many cultures, this time of the year continues to have many rites and ceremonies towards the ancestors, and November seems to be an extent of the overall theme of October / Autumnal equinox, albeit, such practices towards ancestors' veneration in many cultures during this month seem to be a lot more private, within the domestic/familiar environment, unlike the October celebrations which were/are a lot more towards the community (something I've explained why, in previous videos during this October 2024 concerning the Samhain and Hallowtide traditions).

She remembers me of some brazilian "encantados" (which means enchanted). Some of the encantados were living people who were enchanted somehow, before the death by a mystic force, after death (like an ancestor) or because of the way they dyed. Some of the encantados have never been human at all, some of them are nature beings that protect the woods, similar to some japanese youkais like kitsune or the fae folk. But for those encantados who were human, they have a power that is beyond the power of the dead or an ancestor, and Baba Yaga looks like this. Cuca and Matinta Pereira are very similar to Baba Yaga, in my opinion. She fells like a encantado so mutch. Unfortunately, if you research about cuca or matinta, the most of the principal results will be very superficial because of Monteiro Lobato's version of the story, but the good research will worth it.

unfortunately, in the modern neo-pagan tradition, the russian version of the story about Baba Yaku and Vasilisa is popular. However, the image of Baba Yaga is common among all Slavs and Balts, with many variations. She is also Jerzy-Baba to the Czechs, Baba Roga to the Croats, Tsitsi-Baba, Yaga-baba, Yazya-baba, Hadra-baba (everyone recognized her, grumpy, yes)-baba to the Ukrainians, etc. and in folklore, she is sometimes kinder and inclined to help, somewhere unfriendly or belligerent. In our fairy tales or scarecrows, Yaka has the function of a thief (the well-known fairy tale Ivasyk-Telesyk, where she is sometimes replaced by the Snake) and where she does a rather unsuccessful ritual of roasting a child (actually recorded on Polissia, for example). Нer leg is not only bone, but can be clay, and she can live in a hole or in a nest in a tree - that is, she lives in another, inhuman space. Baba Zima (winter) is also about her. There is a game in the folk tradition of Babu - hide-and-seek, there is a tradition of exchanging milk teeth with Yaga for strong iron ones (again, an ancestor from the afterlife). In the Ukrainian tradition, she can also work with electricity, threshing grain (hello, connection with the Мiller). Propp has a view of Yaga as the one that leads to the initiation, the transformation of the hero. For me, she is the image of a much older Witch, who is beyond the Border, but influences, tests, threatens. And this is not about the foremother or midwife of all people))) I understand her as an older very ancient important dead Witch from the afterlife, perhaps the first of the dead of this kind)

Baba-Yaga hut is the same as Bau-Gula/Baba who sits on the roof of the sick. sorry, but I disagree, what is the meaning of her name, the serpent part comes from the head of Draco, the location of Damu, the ancient Egyptians called Draco and Ursa Minor the wife of Seth, the god of Chaos, she is a protection goddess, associated with Rebirth, the Boar Baba rides is her Warrior. Ursa Minor is a Bear, Taweret is a Hippopotamus, in Sumerian, Dimshah means both Hippopotamus and Bear, but it also means Demon Heart, Baba-Yaga the Evil Witch, and the Chicken Leg with the Rooster, which is linked to other meaning of Dimshah.

I find this presentation stunning and very important, but there are two things I would like u to think of:-
    1. Baba, баба, in slavic languages, it means a woman, a broad, a woman in her power, a strong one, the mother, the hearth keeper, the one who feeds the family, the one who can be the worrier, if the time asks.
    2. Babushka, БАБУШКА, this is the old woman, she is so old that everyone is afraid of her, there is nothing for her to be scared of because of the age, wisdom, knowledge, and experience.
I am a linguist. I am a history freak. I am not saying u made a mistake, I am saying think of it.

Sorry, what really hit me from the start of the video (I'm your fan, ok) besides really interesting topic that you chose (I'm Ukrainian and I grew up on these fairytales with Baba Yaga) that you put stress not on the right syllable. It's Baba YagA. And there is a title for her: Baba YagA - KostyanAya NogA (Peg Leg), so it rhymes really well. And now I'm going to watch the video with a calm heart 🥸

So apparently there's a story behind John Wicks moniker.Just kidding of course.Very interesting video. As a Greek,we don't have BY exactly in our folklore but a similar variation.

Tell me about that variation :D I would be very much interested in knowing more about it. Another figure I find it a bit similar to Baba Yaga is the yokai Yamamba, the mountain's old woman/witch from Japan.

I feel as though typicall an "ancestor" is a positive thing, but Baba Yaga has quite a bit of fear around her. Are there many ancestor types in folklore that are rooted more in fear over helpfulness or veneration?

The Iazyges were required to provide mercenary cavalrymen to defend Hadrian's Wall from the British tribes. The Iazyges were a warlike Sarmatian race that migrated during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius. As part of an agreement, the Iazyges were required to send 5,500 of their 8,000 mercenary cavalrymen to defend Hadrian's Wall.
And we brought with us are myths and legends, my name means Son of Sahu (Boar), like her limbs Lewallyn means Like a Lion, and Roger means Famous Spear, the slang meaning of Orion's Sword, ha ha ha
Baba-Yaga told me to say, Boo!
Did I scare you, ha ha ha, hidden deep in the Irish meaning of my name is Trickster, ha ha ha
I'm just joking with you about Baba, ha ha ha

Baba yaga is many things she is the Morana and other forms of Slavic regional spirits with different names in different areas. Makosh is her older form. Some of their cult was swallowed up by the veneration of st petka.

Absolutely so. As a Slav, I agree. To understand this, a deeper study of the question is required, the answer is not so obvious

This is brilliant! I love the Ancestor take, its closer to Paganism than whats out there right now. In my opinion modern pagans focus way too much time on the Gods & not enough on the Ancestors & the land spirits. Interesting that you did this, ive been studying her for a couple of months now & seen others say the same. Im going to paint her hut & youve given me the angle to approach this task with, its her grave. Baba Yaga is stirring right now, wonder why? If i could like this video 100 times i would. Thanks!

My family is not pagan at all, but we are 100% Slavic heritage. When I was a child they told me that if I run alone in the woods she will catch me and eat me. I'd belived it until I turned 15.

I am familiar with the character. but she seems to be a specific cultural formation. So if I am not of that culture, I don't have the context and grounds, even traditional belief to make contact with such figure other than as outsider. (not that I would want to anyway, other than by some need) I guess that is the same deal with some foreign region culture gods considered from a fixed local. If I say baba yaga is first dead or first ancestor, I become appropriating a (to me) far-land tradition/belief (unless I take the basic archetypal concept behind the concrete character and start believing in it wholly).
In this I see the way it is. As Harger says in video, the neo-pagans may contact a spirit potential of the assumed folklore character, but their access of inner-spirit being is skewed and distorted by their lack of understanding of what they are seeking. So what they get is what they want to get, but it is not the real character/aspect pointed to by lore.
have I said right or wrong?
