Id say im a tinker i love soldering on old gameboys and gamegears fixing stuff people are going to throw in garbage☹ its like welding but more relaxing to me and i love old video game carts snes mostly.love cleaning up old carts polishing them up and adding to the collection. Im todd by the way sorry better late then never.

I never soldered before but i just tried out isopropyl alcohol cleaning in 2022 and i got good results and im used to it

This was my first ever solder job, and was very nervous while doing it, but I followed the video step-by-step, and was able to fix a virtual boy I bought with no video in one eye, and glitchy video in the other to a perfect connection. Thank you so much, you not only taught me a lot about soldering for future projects, but also got me a permanently-fixed virtual boy, which I absolutely love playing :)

Great job! What you just explained happens alot. A very gentle reflow can fix it.... or make it worse! So be carefull. Check for continuity on each pin and try to find witch specific pin is bad and reflow just that one

hurrah - one side dead other side many lines - and FIXED! thank you! - oh and they'd glued - WOW thats a fundamental flaw.... good news theres this easy fix...

Holly shit cheers from a fellow repairman , i am the only person that i know that managed to find one with a glitchy lense.. ive took it apart and over look the ribbon connection , instead i thought one of the micro wire iris of microscopic gold broke off . Ive keept it secure in its box waiting for a day id buy i lense.. if thats even possible in 2019.. but heck now i can take it out the box and make this work cheers !
I also have white papers and sdk kit for years i wanted to fiddle with mine , if the ribbon fix work oh man i can wait to burn my retinas trying to prompt and code it

Thank you so much, I appreciate that deeply. 350c. There's also, you can melt away the insulation on the lens with acetone if you don't wanna burn it with the iron
@@RETROGAMINGARTS Thanks for the tip! I think my wife's nail polish remover might be 100% acetone. I'll probably try that first.
I wanted to give you an update that I just bit the bullet and decided to solder the ribbon cables. I'm happy to say that I fixed 3 virtual boys in 3 days with no mistakes! And you deserve a lot of credit for cautioning about common mistakes so I didn't make any of them and ruin these awesome consoles. Thanks a lot man. I'm super duper happy and looking forward to fixing more of them in future.

My right eye peice has lines in it, this process should fix my issue? Is there one ribbon cable per eye peice or one all together?

Hahahaha, when radio shack closed down they liquidated their stores. Even the furnishings. So i snagged 4 of these for 20 bucks a pop

Yea, I would get a bit of practice first, maybe do some ps1 mods, recap some gamegears, to get familiar. Different people pick it up at Different speeds so gaging your skills prior is important
Great tips, the Best video on issue for this issue. I did this on both Lens but i still have ligne issue at the same place (for both). I have checked all solder What can be the issue ?
Just keep redoing the solder, sometimes it takes a few tries, have you noticed an improvement? Like after you soldered it you noticed theres less lines?
@@RETROGAMINGARTS you are the Best, for one Lens that was the ribbon, i have cutted it off with a cutter to isolate. The second one i did the solder again and again 4 times and it's OK now. Graphism are amazing, i was playing for almost 3 years with ligne glitches on both... Thank you again

how much of my channel have you seen? there's lots and lots of videos explaining soldering, i share all my tips and hints, everything i know is on here, so i 100% believe in time you could learn, this is a higher level repair though, its why i added the "if you make a mistake, this is how you can fix it" part, because its pretty easy to mess up
I am new to soldering but want to try this. Should I set my soldering gun to the lowest setting?
i wouldent suggest this being a entry level repair, i would start on something else

Weird way to go on your stream. You lost the stream most likely by static. Maybe, going back and then ended ng the stream would have been better.

Dodgy DIY, if your not good with a soldering iron, do not attempt it.
You see me bridge those connections and fix the bridge? Lol.
And yea, there are newer and better ways. Just consolize the thing lol

What type of solder and flux do you use?
60/40 rosin core solder, kester 186 no clean flux, and or non spill paste rosin flux
