Really enjoyed this. Bob Hawke became PM the year I turned 18 was able to vote. Like all of us he was a flawed human being, but he always genuinely seemed to want to get things done for the better of the country. He initially ruled by consensus and listened to many alternative views. However, this was a very different time, when the influence of money, corporate lobbyists, and the media (especially the Murdoch media) was much less influential. Politics is a completely different animal now. I doubt that he could become PM today, not because he shouldn't, but because the media (both corporate and social) would fuel the flames of outrage.

I doubt we'll ever see the likes of Bob Hawke again. Highly educated yet very down to earth - he could happily chat to any one on any level. A very well informed, confident leader - one of the few who listened to what advisors had to say - but ultimately, made his own decisions.
He was a good Prime Minister for the time. The knack to talk to people all walks life. For most part kept politics to parliment and government. Admired (and decried) both sides of political spectrum. 100% correct about Australia’s future more Asian based than UK & USA. Probably fallen off the wagon at current state of mismanagement of country. Love your Roy &HG reviews
Hawkey was an absolute champion, loved him ❤ there’s a story I heard once about him that made me laugh till I cried, I’m hunting for it and if I find it I’ll send you a link. Love your stuff
Bob Hawke was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford between 1953 and 1956. In 1954 he skolled a yard of ale-two-and-a half pints, or 1.4 litres in 11 seconds, then a world record. Bob was a great Aussie, loved his country and the people.
Bob Hawke was the best. He was down to earth for sure. I remember when Australia won the America's cup (Yachting) and he said "any boss who sacks someone today is a bloody bum". He loved a beer.
Bob was great. I met him in about 1993. He had plenty of flaws (massively outweighed by his talents) and I wonder how he would fare in the era of the internet, social media and cancel culture.
You are right in that he did have many flaws, like many people. Australians are better at separating public interest from private matters than most countries.
Bob Hawke still holds the record as the most popular PM in Aussie history (measured by public approval rankings). Gave everyone a day off when we won the America’s cup! I met him once on a flight to Shanghai in Qantas business class! He was wearing the Qantas provided pyjamas and slippers and I found that rather amusing ! 😂
Kap, you met Bob in his Pj’s on a plane. That so funny. Did you talk to him? I didn’t, but spoke to him on the phone, only 5 words haha. He rang dad , I answered the phone once, all I said was, “hang on. I’ll get dad.”This was before Bob was PM, dad was involved in the unions when Bob was and would fly to Canberra for meetings. And we got presents when he came home. I hated politics, dad ended up hating it too. Can be a dam dirty business, not meaning Bob, some others. I remember as a child Kim Beasley Snr popped over with his young son Kim Jnr and we were told to go out the backyard and play. Gee 60s or 70s, can’t remember. All I remember thinking was how boring that boy was lol. He probably wasn’t, out the back with a total stranger. I can’t even remember talking to him lol. Dad got out of the union stuff, some not so nice people involved, Dads family meant more than, well we won’t go there. Oh I remember dad came home one night, suit and tie of course. I nearly died lol. I’d made dad a crochet purple and black tie as kid. Omg he wore it to work 😂. I said, but dad, I made it for fun, not work. Dad said, anything you make me is beautiful. I never made him another tie ever 😂. Oh the stories we heard, some funny, some dam creepy.
@@bernadettelanders7306 haha yes I talked to him very briefly I think I made some awkward joke 😂 Yes the unions are dog eat dog not for the faint hearted! ❤️
@@Dr_KAP Oh you chatted to Bob briefly, we have more in common lol. Was it awkward talking to him in his jimjams lol. Yes, was just reading a few old newspaper articles about dad, he was good man. Gave my typewriter away to a girl from a poor family. Gee we had to nail things down or dad would give them away😂. I remember coming home as and a total stranger was sleeping on our couch. Dad was in the kitchen, I asked who is he. All dad said, he’s got nowhere to live, I’ll find him somewhere to live tomorrow, and he did. Always something going on at home, oh dear I’m wandering down memory lane, all happy memories. I loved sitting at the kitchen table when dads friends would call around, the never swore, mum and dad didn’t drink or smoke but never minded the visitors bringing their own. I never heard my parents argue, they talked quietly away from us. Sorry, still miss them both terribly. The laughter, serious political and sporting conversation, sitting and listening was magical to me. Yup, I got the gift of the gab from dad😂. Dad’s mothers father was a member of parliament in Victoria during federation. Had a country town named after him. Dad involved in politics. My daughter was asked to join local council. I thought NO, not another generation of politics. Thankfully she declined. I’m going to zip my fingers now to stop talk/typing - blame my darling dad.
This was great I really enjoyed this one. I was a kid when Bob was pm so I didn't know much about him, apart from the world record for skulling a beer. I wish we had pollies like him now, now they are a joke. 🙂👍
What I remember best about Bob Hawk is when we won the America's Cup in yachting when we won it over in Fremantle WA with a famous winged keel. Bob was dressed in a sports jacket with it printed all over it Australia many times over. He said "any boss who sacks you today for not turning up today for work, is a bum". 😂
Bob Hawke was considered probably the greatest PM we've ever had. He was all of those things you observed and more.. A Rhodes scholar and a highly innovative thinker and legislator who, along with Paul Keating, changed Australia for the better. Major reformer of our tax policies and the way business and our unions worked together to turbo charge our economy (the Accord). A much loved and admired PM. Would speak to the Queen and the steel worker with total respect for both.
Hawkie was a legend! He was in the Guinness book of records for skolling/necking a yard glass of beer. He cemented universal health care as being a permanent thing in Australia. And did a lot for the redistribution of wealth downwards.
Bob Hawke was one of the MOST progressive PMs ever. He loved beer and the Aussie yacht clubs. I was a bit young for understanding him but he was loved. ❤the most Aussie PM EVER. He was super straightforward and honest. ❤️❤️
Bob Hawke was my childhood Prime Minister. How refreshing to see and hear the last good a Prime Minister we had. Relatable and truly cared about the average Aussie.
I would encourage you to watch more of bob hawke. In interviews and in politics. A truly great man. Something that the UK desperately needs. Cheers haggis👍🇦🇺🥃

Well, that was a trip down memory lane.....such a pleasing mix of fun, common sense and some actual real camaraderie......how sad we no longer have a real line between "left" and "right" Our country has been stolen, our political system has been hijacked.... we've been sold out
Bob Hawke was elected as Prime Minister the same year I was born... He is one of our most fondly remembered PMs. He was a Trade Unionist, and had ankind of approachability with the Working Class. He is equally as loved for his introduction of Medicare and other forms of social reform as he is for his fastest yard of beer record, and the ohrase "any boss who fires an employee for not coming in today, is a bum!" (It was race day the first time Australia qualified for the Americas Cup yacht race) For reference, I would imagine the "Hansonites" they mention would be followers of Pauline Hanson, she was ousted from our conservative party for being too extreme and ended up forming her own small party "One Nation" they are still around today, and find themselves kind of aligning with US MAGA politics, if that tells you anything. Ive never really heard anyone have a nad word to say about Bob Hawke, and 10 years in Office befire resigning the position to his Treasurer says a lot, these days we cant always get a keader to finish one single term 😆
Bob is a ledgend and he was there for the people. He was correct Asia is a huge market. I'm an expat working in Asia and its great to see our products here and there are many and continue to grow.
Great interview, I’ve been very fortunate to talk with Bob one on one a couple of times. He was a very charismatic guy warm in nature and easy to have a laugh with. We don’t have leadership like this today due to the failures in ideology promoting victimhood, fear and breaking apart families to control the masses of sheeple unfortunately.
Without doubt one of the greatest leaders Australia has ever seen. He, along with Keating, were both visionaries and men of action and they set Australia up for the huge success we have experienced ever since. They modernised Australia and really put us on the world stage and not just economically. Sleep well Bobby...sleep well.
Bob Hawke was a great Prime Minister and truly workèd hard for his country and believed in fairness for all Australians. Plus he was spot-on regarding the cricket.
Bob Hawke and Paul Keating come from a golden age of Australian politics. They achieved so many positives for Australia. Bob came from a union background and was an enigmatic mix of street and diplomacy. He pushed through so many initiatives despite massive opposition.
Everybody loved Bob Hawk, I voted for him. What is effecting most people including politicians is social media and the instant accessibility to everything and everyone. The lack of the individual privacy is causing instability making everyone feel insecure and self conscious with all the constant judgement from others.

Thank you I thought Bob Hawk would have garnered more votes purely because of his Political knowledge and that he had no interest in Party Politics when he had the power to make positive change no matter the Party as long as it was good for the people and the Country’s benefit. He was an Oxford Graduate and it showed.

I love this trip down memory lane. I think it really shows how much we have lost in society and indeed Politics. I wish we had more of this in comedy and life 👏
I doubt we'll ever see the likes of Bob Hawke again.
He was obviously a passionate man. You should find the clip when he was interviewed after australia won the America's cup. 🤔😎🇦🇺👌
He was an absolute champion of a leader
Bob Hawke was the best. He was down to earth for sure. I remember when Australia won the America's cup (Yachting) and he said "any boss who sacks someone today is a bloody bum". He loved a beer.
Bob was great. I met him in about 1993. He had plenty of flaws (massively outweighed by his talents) and I wonder how he would fare in the era of the internet, social media and cancel culture.
You are right in that he did have many flaws, like many people. Australians are better at separating public interest from private matters than most countries.
I thought Bob was a good prime minister ❤
@@Dr_KAP
Oh you chatted to Bob briefly, we have more in common lol.
@@bernadettelanders7306 aww bless them all I love hearing your stories. The good old days! How we miss them.
Bob Hawker was one of the best Prime Ministers we have had in recent history. His personality resonated with the Australian's and a great statesman.
He was well loved. Flawed, but loved.
14:50. Exactly, politicians who are not scared of the media, knowledgeable, and are articulate. Australia has not had such a PM since Bob IMO.
I'll add to the chorus of calling Bob the best PM we've had.
Hawke was a very popular Labour PM during the 1980s.
I meet him an his second wife many times at Woodford folk festival, a real Aussie bloke ,introduced myself called him Mr hawke ,just call me Bob mate ,then a handshake shake like a bricklayer 👌
Skulling Champion in his Oxford Year 😊
Bob Hawke was the best Prime Minister Australia ever had.
Down to earth. Exactly what we need.
Approachable hard working good bloke who loved a beer.
Watch Bob Hawke when Australia won The America's Cup . He's a legend . Can scull a beer extremely fast , tell a great joke and went to Oxford
Bob Hawke reminds me so much of my dad. Bob was a bloody legend. So was my Dad.
❤
Well, that was a trip down memory lane.....such a pleasing mix of fun, common sense and some actual real camaraderie......how sad we no longer have a real line between "left" and "right"
Our country has been stolen, our political system has been hijacked.... we've been sold out
Bob Hawke was elected as Prime Minister the same year I was born... He is one of our most fondly remembered PMs.
He was a Trade Unionist, and had ankind of approachability with the Working Class. He is equally as loved for his introduction of Medicare and other forms of social reform as he is for his fastest yard of beer record, and the ohrase "any boss who fires an employee for not coming in today, is a bum!"
(It was race day the first time Australia qualified for the Americas Cup yacht race)
For reference, I would imagine the "Hansonites" they mention would be followers of Pauline Hanson, she was ousted from our conservative party for being too extreme and ended up forming her own small party "One Nation" they are still around today, and find themselves kind of aligning with US MAGA politics, if that tells you anything.
Ive never really heard anyone have a nad word to say about Bob Hawke, and 10 years in Office befire resigning the position to his Treasurer says a lot, these days we cant always get a keader to finish one single term 😆
Bob Hawke - the silver bodgie!
Bob Hawke was the BEST Australian Prime Minister ever! A true legend and leader.
Bob Hawke was very smart and like-able. I haven’t seen an Australian PM since him as good.
Bob Hawke and Paul Keating come from a golden age of Australian politics. They achieved so many positives for Australia. Bob came from a union background and was an enigmatic mix of street and diplomacy. He pushed through so many initiatives despite massive opposition.
I was a kid / teen during the Hawke and Keating years, great statesmen.
The footage of Hawkey sculling a beer at the MCG is the thing of legend
Bob Hawk is very fondly remembered in Australia R.I.P mate
For the first time in my history of looking at you tube comments, I agree with them all. Bob Hawke was a great PM.
I forgot how much he sounded like my Poppy. Was lovely to hear the voice again.
Everybody loved Bob Hawk, I voted for him.
What is effecting most people including politicians is social media and the instant accessibility to everything and everyone. The lack of the individual privacy is causing instability making everyone feel insecure and self conscious with all the constant judgement from others.
Hawkie was a legend
On the day Australia won the Americas cup he said Any boss that sacks anyone for not turning up to work today is a bum!
RIP Silver Bodgy
He was a great Prime Minister.. I'm so glad you enjoyed that!
The world needs more Bob Hawkles. Preferably alive
Damn! Bob Hake - what a top bloke!
My all time favorite Australian politician is John Cain - Victorian Premier from 1982 to 1990 (or thereabouts) - honest guy, caught public transport to work!, really cared about us Victorians.
Thanks for your vids!! They remind me of all the things I love about Aussie culture! :)
Thank you I thought Bob Hawk would have garnered more votes purely because of his Political knowledge and that he had no interest in Party Politics when he had the power to make positive change no matter the Party as long as it was good for the people and the Country’s benefit. He was an Oxford Graduate and it showed.
Brilliant bloke! Even better PM! 😄
Bob was the Best Prime Minister Australia ever had. The video of him when we Won the America’s Cup 🏆was brilliant.
Bob Hawk was a good bloke. He was a Raod scholar and heard the word record for sculling the yard glass. RIP Bob
He was the man. Bob was terrific.
The funniest Prime Minister we ever had and good at his job. Complete bonus!
A man of integrity, intelligence and charisma despite his political allegiance. Australia badly needs another PM of his calibre.
Bob was one of our best and true character.
I live in Melbourne and Bob Hawke was the best, I wish we could dig him up and bring him back.
We could only dream of having another bob hawke as priminister, he was the man for the people
Best Prime Minister we ever had, in the best decade, the 80's.
Back when we could afford everything...the decadent decade.
What a bloody LEGEND❤❤❤❤👍👍🇭🇲🇭🇲🇭🇲
And when we won the Americas Cup😂😂😂😂
Loved our Bob, we’ll never see the likes of him again in this country 😢
RIP Bob Hawke...although the Pauline reference hasn't aged well, he was appreciated by both sides of politics. Will be remembered with respect by everyone with a brain.
A beautiful man of the people
