Paul Keating was a fantastic politician. He could play the political game like no other. He was a great orator and could sell the Australian public on almost anything. He knew the economic system of Australia at the time needed to change. It couldn't stay the way it was, Australia was slowly slipping further & further down the list of powerful countries. He reformed the economy. It needed to happen, but it led to the last recession Australia had prior to the corona virus recession. That was his downfall.

I still remember the outrage in England when Paul Keating put his hand on Her Majesty’s back. ‘Lizard of Oz’ was one of the headlines in the English papers. It was cringeworthy to be honest.😬 I was embarrassed as an Australian. Keating was a Labor Prime Minister. Labor are notorious in wanting Australia to be a Republic. For me, his disregard for protocol was very disappointing.

Adore Paul Keating. Paul Keating and Gough Whitlam ❤.
Do check out Paul Keating in parliamentary question time, nothing like it before or since. So suave, urbane and biting. Bloody awesome. But also watch The Redfern Speech, and take it in the context of the times. One of the best speeches given, kudos also to his speechwriter Don Watson. Keating's way of patiently attempting to bring ignorant and fearful punters around to indigenous rights on talk back radio showed a lack of hubris. When needed he often explained and tried to lead rather than be led by the polls, to bring people with him, rather than polarise and dismiss.

I cannot help but marvel of how we see our prime ministers as just another person who is answerable to the people and only in his or her position by the collective choice of the people. We hang shit on them when they deserve it and happy to ridicule at times. In sharp contrast the situation in Russia is the other extreme and an interview like this in their own country is like light years away at best. Never take what we have for granted as so many nations this type of interaction with the leader of the nation is centuries away from a possibility.

Hawke, Keating and Howard, whether you liked them or not, were the last of our Prime Ministers who governed based on their set of principles, rather than wavering to public opinion polls. Keating shone as Treasurer, mostly famous for announcing "the Recession we had to have", and was recognised, and awarded as the "World's greatest Treasurer: in 1984. As a Prime Minister though, he suffered from the same issue as Malcolm Fraser, comig across as a bit pompous and smug for the general public, and lost the 1996 election to Honest Johnny.

I have mixed feelings about Keating. He was quite a visionary Treasurer to PM Bob Hawke and savage towards the Opposition in Parliamentary debate, but occasionally to the point where he came off as quite arrogant - which isn't a good thing in Australia. Also in recent years he seems to have become quite controversial with his public commentary.

I don’t think he was ever arrogant; a fascination for French clocks or Mahler doesn’t make you so but it was grist for the media mill. That he didn’t hide from his interests should have made him more genuine than the like of Howard who pretended to love cricket or Morrison who pretended to love rugby sharks. Australian democracy is now more than ever in a battle with big everything; there’s no point in Albo pretending to be the man everyone wants to have a beer with because the price has become too high what with all the massive issues that have been ignored for so long and the tsunami of what’s on the horizon. Frankly I am sad that fans of Keating but more so Hawke are so facile. The cry that we will never see their like again is depressing because they who loved those leaders should have done so for the right reasons - I know reactions are just a bit of fun but I’ve found their comments depressing

Being a clever student of the art of war, Saffron’s boss, Peter Abels , took the young Keating under his own wing and guidance.
After proving himself brockering illegal deals between the unions, the ALP and the Sydney Cartel ( Abels gang ), Abels financed Keating into politics and controlled him all the way through.

Keating was an incredible primeminister, and treasurer.... Hawke was great, but we were living in a golden decade, not much he could have done wrong (though he did a lot right).... but Keating saved us from complete disaster

  • @I.Lostalim

Keating was Hawke's treasurer who became PM after Hawke 'stood down'
Paul referring to "his mate Howard" would be his opponent, opposition leader John Howard, who would eventually win one of those elections...
As to their comment of a proven failure - Keating had a large recession to deal with and the opposition definitely pushed hard on crippling interest rates.
Though fictionalised there was a Mini-Series called Keating that covered his terms in politics if you're interested in learning more.
Oh and to his comments about better representation for women, he was also, and still is, a big advocate for the rights of First Nation Auatralians

Paul Keating was a smart cookie, but a tad too one-eyed and full of self-importance for mine. Because of him though, I did learn the meaning of recalcitrant.

In 1993, Prime Minister Paul Keating became involved in a diplomatic incident with Malaysia when he described Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad as "recalcitrant". Which almost led to a Trade War. 🤐

both Hawke and Keating were from the labor party (left of centre) - but where Hawke was popular for being a bit of a larrikin and "working class", Keating was maligned a lot for being educated and wealthy. The funny part is that Hawke was also educated and wealthy, he just acted like a "regular bloke", while Keating refused to pretend. Meanwhile Keating was known for being quite progressive and even brought a referendum to change Australia into a republic (leave the commonwealth), which ended up failing of course. These days, both of these prime ministers are often interviewed on current politics, as they have a lot of knowledge and expertise, and are well respected for what they did with their time.

Keating was working class from Bankstown! Family home was a classic fibro cottage. However he was v well educated. I wouldn't have called him wealthy really though.

BoB Hawke, possibly the best PM ever, had Paul Keating as Deputy. Then Keating became PM and changed Australia in his own way, floating the Australian dollar and recognising we were part of an "Asian" economy. After all, China is our biggest trading partner..
They were both visionary, but Im a member of the Australian Labor Party (A.L.P.), their party (and mine), the Left Wing, responsible for making Medicare/public healthcare, Pensions and welfare, 38 hour weeks, Safety at Work, Paid Holidays and public holidays, compulsory Employer paid Superannuation.. etc.. etc..
And the President here would NOT be like an American President, he would be like our Governor General, open envelopes and buildings and swear people in etc etc.

Bob Hawke was very much "just one of the boys" larrikin type. Keating (who was HAwke's treasurer before being PM) comes across as a very serious, dry, almost-boring politician - but whose wit was incredibly sharp, and he was never short of a good insult for the Opposition (the reference to "Johnny Howard" is to an opposition member (possibly opposition leader at the time) who was PM after Keating - and you can already pick up a hint of a barb against him in Keating's response).
He is single-handedly resposnible for some Australians knowing what the word "recalcitrant" means.....
If you're even *slightly* interested in watching politics, there's plenty of youtubes of Keating with incredibly clever barbs and responses during question time....
EDIT: I think there's also a little more to his reaction about Howard potentially enjoying meeting with Suharto......

Paul Keating I think was more upper class than Bob Hawke - so interviewed differently - not as approachable maybe. . Both Bob & Paul were Labour Party but def bought up in a diff class system - Paul may have been privately educated for example.
