- A side-scrolling platform/run 'n jump game inspired by a Pac-man video game based on the cartoon show from the early 80s. You as Pac-Man must help the lost fairy get back to her home in fairyland. You must also avoid the ghosts: Pinky, Inky, Blinky, Clyde, and Sue and other ghosts from pursuing you whom populate Pac-Land. The power pills make Pac-Man invincible and able to eat the ghosts. You must complete the stages within a time limit or you will be vulnerable and being chased by ghosts. There are also fruits that Pac-Man can collect for points. When you get to the final stage which is the fairyland you are given a pair of magic shoes to help you return to your home safely. When Pac-Man reaches home safely, he will meet Ms. Pac-Man, Baby Pac-Man, Chomp Chomp the Pac-dog and Sourpuss the Pac-cat
This is the first game in the Pac-Man series departure from the maze roots going more towards platform direction. Much of the work and design has already completed for Hana-Barbara's Pac-Man cartoon show.
The controls are only left and right and a jump button.
There are a 8 trips in the game totaling 32 levels . After the 8th trip, the 9th trip repeats the 5th trip where level 33 becomes level 17 with increased difficulty and the game is endless.

3rd Trip: 8:56
4th Trip: 12:32
5th Trip: 16:08
6th Trip: 19:46
7th Trip: 23:28
8th Trip: 27:02
Note: No cheats used. Only savestates were used. The game is endless with only 32 levels. The levels start repeating at level 33 After the levels start repeating, at 31:05, various cheats were used. The level counter can only go up to 99 and level 100 becomes level 0. After this it automatically restarts all the way back to level 1 so I quit afterwards. - เกม

I loved playing this! I never really understood why Pac-Land doesn't get the love or recognition it deserves, though, especially since it predates Super Mario Bros. by like a year! A forgotten classic gem arcade game!
I've been so happy to see it's finally gotten some love in the Super Smash Bros. series!

Stewart this is so fascinating, your comment sent me on a deep dive. tbh i first started looking things up because i assumed you were wrong, i figured Mario had to be first. but you were right! the Mario Bros. arcade game predates this one, but that wasn’t a side scrolling game. And this game had parallax scrolling! in 1984!
so my guesses for its lack of popularity are the video game crash of ‘83 probably hurt it, it was probably poorly marketed due to its connection to the Hanna Barbera cartoons (the suits always seem to screw up video game multimedia stuff, am i right?), and the biggest reason... it was never ported to the NES!
I know what you’re thinking: 1, this dude has too much time on his hands. and 2, of course it was on the NES, wikipedia says so and there’s cartridges on ebay! But the internet has an understandable tendency of conflating all things Famicom with all things NES (Famicom even redirects to NES on wikipedia, and even the Nintendo online stores sometimes mix the two up), and cartridges are easy to fake. I can find no evidence outside of second hand markets that Pac-Land was ever truly on the NES
Mr. Spaghetti, rest assured, Pac-Land never made it outside of Japan on the Famicom, so there is no NES version of this one. Like Mappy, it stayed in Japan.
Because the controls were so damn difficult!
Shame on nintendo for not adding those hats as alts, such a missed opportunity

@@zen_arcade but they do have direct control on it, it's developed by a second party developer, sakurai even said that they choose the dlc characters.
Sort of like all of bowser in smash, he just feels like an gritty reboot of bowser that is hype realistic, and fights closer to what Ridley would fight like like in his body than how Bowser does, don’t even get me started on lost episode creepy pasta hyper realistic bowser a.k.a. Giga Bowser!
Eh. Sakurai isn't too bright on these things. Just look at Sonic's moveset, then play Sonic Battle
Namco helped make the new Smash games, so they are to blame too. Odd, they didn't include the Pac-Land music to the Pac Land stage.

Played this every day of my holiday in Devon when I was 12 years old and I've loved it ever since.

My local arcade had this one... it's quite rare finding it in the wild! I loved how it played the theme from the Pac-Man cartoon.
They also used the US designs for Pac Man, Ms. Pac Man (hair and bow vs. bow alone) and Baby Pac Man (boy in US, girl in JP/world version).

Fun fact: Shigeru Miyamoto was inspired by this game to create Super Mario Bros. True story.

I'd always wondered as a kid how Pac-Man went from being a one-screen maze-chaser to the full-blown graphic adventure it was in Pac-Man 2.

@@julienjohnson9670 Yeah... While i like the effort made to represent an important part of Pac-Man's history, i would have much preferred the Pac-Village from the Pac-Man World series instead. I actually grew up with those games. Or at the very least they should have dropped it for an HD version of Pac-Maze from Smash 3DS for Ultimate. MUCH more iconic and recognizable. And prettier to look at.

wow i've spent countless quarters playing this game... and ironically, this is also the game that brought me to Nintendo... one day my dad told me that his friend has this game that i play at arcades, so i went to check it out, and turned out it's Super Mario Bros, which is strikingly similar... we end up buying the NES ourselves and rest is history
So much time (and 10p's) spent playing this in the arcades as a kid.

I remember playing the NES version as a child. Never beat it. Nice to see what the arcade version looks like.
There was an arcade perfect port of this on the "PC Engine." Classic game - but this guy is not a professional player. There are loads of bonuses that he's missing - like jumping at the end of the stage for bonus, resetting the time by eating 6 ghosts in a row, etc. Anyway, thanks for the memories :)
And I remember there was a flower to grow in every stage..
there were soooo many hidden manouvres in this game.... jumping off the screen, moving stuff, jumping at the end of each screen at the right time!
+router coach Pac-Land wasn’t arcade perfect on the PC Engine/TurboGrafx it graphically looks and/or the audio, music, sound is out of place in some areas

Nice Walkthrough on this 1984 arcade video game, and the Fairy Queen is my favorite character on Pac-Land.
I had to have spent well over $1000 in quarters playing this game.. It's by far the best game in the Pacman series..

This was such a revolutionary sidescrolling game for it's time...took Nintendo almost 10 yrs to surpass technically.

If I went back in time I'd tell Namco to make a console. They were the gods of making amazing, ground breaking games but they don't get the recognition they deserve and I think it's because of no console manufactured by them.
If I remember correctly, they were developing one but eventually canned it.

A pub my dad used to take me and my brother too every now and again had this on an arcade machine in a little games room, I always felt like I was cheating when it let you choose the stage to start on, was this the first side scrolling platformer?

How do you glide or slow down your fall speed at the first plank? I’m effectively stuck & unable to get past level 3 because I lose all my lives at that exact point.
The doors and keys at 13:30 could make a fun level where you choose routes based on doors like this

This game was groundbreaking, it pre-dated Super Mario Bros by a year.
i had no idea this game existed (and i wasn’t that much of a pac-man fan) until i unlocked the pac-land stage in super smash bros. for wii U by playing each of the smash tour boards
The game is based in the Cartoon Series released in 1982.
I can't believe I've never heard of this game, it would have been like Donkey Kong Country back then.
I played it in the arcades at the time. It was definitely a step above a lot of the dross but then a lot changed in a short time in the early 80s. Atari in particular jumped a long way ahead in graphics and sound with games like Marble Madness and Paperboy in the same year as Pacland, mostly down to 16 bit chipsets. The parallax scrolling amazed me at the time.

I had this game for the NES (Famicom really) when I was a child. It was a fun-to-play port but graphics was very downgraded.

They don’t go the jump at the end of each level that scores you points... one jump at the right time nets you 7,000 score timed right at the end of every level.
I've never seen this game in arcades. I wonder why it's so rare. Did it simply not meet expectations? Was the hardware prone to malfunctioning? The game doesn't look bad. Seems better than all the "REAL THRILLS" monstrosities that occupy American arcades today
It came out around the video game crash, so vendors were very hesitant to purchase new machines
Took a while, but I had several arcades around me that carried this game, though they weren't the closest ones. Only ever found Pac Jr. and Pac-Mania in one place, each.

stage three is as far as I ever get. that jump over the water part just aint happening. I don't know how you slowed your jump like that to cross it but I pushed every button and nothing

@@pominozjohn2150 Pac-Land has no joystick, you pressed buttons to make him run left or right (if you held them down he walked at a slow pace).
@@tonydecaro The Eurpoean version we had in arcades had a joystick that you had to keep pressing in the direction you wanted to travel.
