Game Archer even in more modern games water can add A LOT of difficulty to a game. there's water-based levels namely from Nintendo's direction that have a bad reputation for being difficult, and then even in Halo, you die when you enter water a lot of the time.

Castlevania IV is one of the most epic games ever made, great atmosphere, tons of end of level bad guys and probably the best soundtrack to any game ever, just awesome.
+IvoryInDaHouse No, it doesn't... Final Fantasy VI has the best SNES soundtrack. I'd say it's the best video game soundtrack at all. Castlevania IV has a few good pieces--Stage 3-2 consistently gets overlooked. But no other SNES game has the variety, technical brilliance, and beauty as the music of FF6. Even two decades later, Celes' Song is likely to bring tears to my eyes as I recall Cid's death and her suicide attempt. No other game has ever come close to the music of FF6, and definitely not Castlevania. It's good, but "best" doesn't belong in the same sentence as Castlevania IV. Contra III's is pretty solid, too, and I agree it's better than Castlevania IV's, but... still nowhere near the best. Of course, we're discussing opinion, so that's just mine.
This is seriously one of my favorite nerd episodes of all time, from probably the best video arc in the nerd series. The passion for which James speaks about these games is so infectious and captivating.

In Castlevania 64, you have to complete a puzzle in the library to remove the magic seal over the wall before you can blow it up with the mandragora and nitro.
@@mrosskne On easy mode the game ends after getting inside the elevator in Castle Center. If you want to play the full story mode and see the true ending you must select normal/hard mode.
I just finished Super Castlevania IV on my SNES mini. And I gotta say that I totally agree with the Nerd about it! The control is so much better compared to previous games. The challenge is reasonable and the whip is great! My absolute favourite in the Castlevania saga!
I have to thank James for introducing me to this amazing franchise almost 10 years ago. Super Castlevania became one of my all time favorite games from the SNES
I just realized after all this time that at 11:51 James is saying: "Oooh" because I honestly thought he was just mocking the aspect he got blown up by saying: "Boom!" Still.. Even after seeing the "Oooh" subtitle, I still hear "Boom" and it still cracks me up. XD
Castlevania 64 wasn't really that bad. My sisters and i had fun playing the game. Well, its because we played every game on the console at the time. The nitro part was tedious but once you figured it out you had it made. My pet peeve of this game were the platform stages. i liked the beginning and the maze in the garden getting chased by chainsaw Frankenstein. It sort of gave me the Resident Evil 2 feel when Tyrant would scare you shitless by breaking through a wall when its silent as fuck.
The title title screen intro scared the fucking shit out of me as a kid. Evil, cryptic music with ominous bass jazz. Oh no! It doesn't stop there! It get's fucking creepier as you the lightning flashes, the bats shadows fly, and it flashes to darkness to reveal a fucking gave with evil skies in the back, with even more ominous, nightmare fuel music in the back. The best Castlevania game of all time. Dark, creepy atmosphere. Brilliant soundtrack, solid mechanics.
The one title screen that freaked the hell out of me when I was a kid was the start-up screen in Castlevania: Circle of the Moon for the Gameboy Advance which still creeps me out today. Castlevania 4 has one of the best music in the series. I personally think Rondo of Blood is the best Castlevania, but interms of presentation and music. Castlevania 4 is really up there!
Dear god I spent so much fucking time on the Castlevania N64 games. The only difference between the two versions is there was content cut from the first one that was jammed back in with lackluster enthusiasm to cash in on the franchise again. I beat both of them with all three characters. Not because I was deeply in love with the games. But because I bought them and I was going to fuck beat them. The Nitro level is the most obnoxious thing in the fucking world.
Rondo of Blood on the PC Engine CD is really an incredible game and you would love it. The controls are much smoother than on the SNES version, it has actual good cutscenes and the sickest music of the entire series. It also had autosaves (in 1993!) and just great atmosphere. Like you I also prefer the linear Castlevanias over the mazey ones like SotN, and Rondo is definitely the best of those, or at least equally good as IV. Dracula X on the SNES really is a bad port.
I miss videos like this, James you should do more detailed reviews like this, exploring the history of the certain games or certain consoles is really cool.
"Hey Mr. Belmont, shouldn't we Inc!use a swimming program for the Belmont clan" "...What a stupid idea! I don't see any situation where my successors would need to be able to swim..."
To those who didn't know: that "schoolgirl" Carrie Fermandez (who is actually a witch) is the decendant of Sypha Belnades, one of the playable characters from Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse on the NES.
Super Castlevania IV is one of the best Snes games there is and it's a favorite of mine, love it and beaten it, it was a great experience, Dracula X isn't great as it's PC Engine counterpart, but a good CV game netherless, now the N64 CV games, these are just bad, both regular and Legacy of Darkness, having awful flaws that make the game impossible to beat.
2:44 The ability to flick the whip is actually extremely useful in a lot of ways - the limp whip can deal damage, so you can simply move it around and have it hit things all over the place. It can even block Death's sickles if you hold it up in the air.
4:52 They should have called it "Super Castlevania 5". This would have been consistent with the precursor "Super Castlevania 4", and it would have also made sense with the whole "Super" theme for Super Nintendo titles.
Played the N 64 ones and the camera's not bad you just have to change mode to the situation. There good games if you give them a chance and try to remember that its there 1st 3d games.
Yeah I enjoyed the N64 version. Got to Dracula but had some really crappy weapon and was stuck so I couldn't beat the game as when I loaded it was right at Dracula. The first PS2 Castlevania game was great as well.
To be honest I played these back when I was maybe 5 at the oldest when I beat them and I even played the first one (not saying I beat the first one then ) but I can't remember ever getting stuck.
Legacy of Darkness was one of my favorite games. I would play it for days on end, I did not have a memory card so every time I turned off the console I had to restart from the beginning haha. I can see why James disliked it in comparison to how I saw it, he had a larger variety of games and has older consoles to compare it too. But for me, I had not played many games, and Legacy of Darkness was so cool, the music was okay, he says that it sucks but, it was more about ambience, music played its role in cutscenes. I loved how I could slay skeletons, then turn into a man beast n' pwn everything, I liked the Cornell's story, the song at 10:10 is an example of one of the songs that is memorable from the game, its not too savvy but its not bad either. I honestly feel like James over exaggerated with the N64 games flaws, the camera sometimes gave me problems like how he showed, but that was probably the only time I ever had those problems, the nitro was a pain to figure out what needed to be done with it, I don't remember having the problem he had at 11:10 ever. I can't believe he started over though, at least he shows alot of dedication towards his attempts at beating the game.
It's an okay game but it's nothing like Castlevania. It's a shitty castlevania game, it should have been separated from it and given a stronger story by making something new.
I actually loved the n64 castlevania games, and I think it's kinda unfair how you used nintendo power and game genie and stuff like that on the other games, but in castlevania 64 you didn't read about how to pass castle center, which wasn't hard at all.
+alex3087 Still a weak argument, for your INFORMATION i finish that piece of shit when i was 12( yeah real castlevania fan), and i felt sorry for not getting the ps1 as a kid. You dumb bitch.

FirebrandOP you're talking about arguments? so your argument is "the game sucks" ? lol xD try better next time; and for your INFORMATION I never beat games that suck the moment you start to play xD
Back in the 90s when I was given a choice between a male or female character I almost always picked the female character because they were almost always faster than the male characters. Zombies at my neighbors is a perfect example.
The Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Gamecube, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS/3DS & Nintendo Switch are my number 1 favorite Nintendo video game consoles ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's a damn shame you missed Symphony of the Night in your youth. I've been playing Castlevania since part 1 and SOTN is my absolute favorite. Aria of Sorrow on the GBA is up there too. Two great games that don't necessarily resemble the originals. Part 4 is my 2nd favorite.
+Raiden2421 Because of Dawn of sorrow, wich is not a bad game, but a unnecessary sequel without the gothic artwork. My favorite ones are SOTN, Aria of Sorrow, IV and Ecclesia.
Definitely agree, not enough love for Aria of Sorrow. Hell, even that limited Harmony of Despair for X360/PS3 was great in the fact that it still used classic castlevania formula and had assets from all the timelines from whip-users to witches to Alucard and Soma, and had multiplayer and could play like a class-based RPG with friends. Castlevania had way more glory moments than just 3 or 4, it had no less than 8 great ones. I get his recollection didn't include them, but it's like Godzilla for PS2, you could play Super Famicom one but if you ever glanced upon the gameplay it'd fucking insert itself into your childhood memories for you.

As a joke, I clicked the closed captions button. I was expecting "Frontal anus lobotomy from a carrot." I wasn't expecting Hungarian captions.
A Frankenstein monster with a chainsaw for an arm? Groovy!
"You can whip in any direction, that's 8 directions!" That really made me laugh
Misty Lane for the Nerd, the universe only exists in 2D and a 4 directional
Right on Avgn! The Castlevania series remains my favorite of all.
I miss videos like this, James you should do more detailed reviews like this, exploring the history of the certain games or certain consoles is really cool.
Firstly, "Castlevania" for the Nintendo 64 *does* have music! Secondly, the parts where the Nerd blew Carrie up had me dying again. 🤣
"Hey Mr. Belmont, shouldn't we Inc!use a swimming program for the Belmont clan"
"...What a stupid idea!
That intro jazz music really brings me back. I had so much to look forward to when this episode came out.
It's kinda nice to see him play a game he legitimately enjoys for once ya know
Super Castlevania IV is one of the best Snes games there is and it's a favorite of mine, love it and beaten it, it was a great experience, Dracula X isn't great as it's PC Engine counterpart, but a good CV game netherless, now the N64 CV games, these are just bad, both regular and Legacy of Darkness, having awful flaws that make the game impossible to beat.
Funny, I've beaten both Castlevania 64 games and never once encountered a flaw like what you're talking about.
Nitroglycerin really is that unstable. Even sunlight can detonate it.
In Dracula X, the Medusa heads look like Oddish.
Unlike most people, Rondo of Blood is my favorite of the Castlevania's.
KamektheMagikoopa1 For me, it's second to Castlevania III.
ImJust1Joe Actually, I lied. The Dracula X Chronicles is my favorite Castlevania.
KamektheMagikoopa1 It's a good game. Wish my PSP didn't mess up before I could finish it.
ImJust1Joe You should really find some way to play it, it's great.
KamektheMagikoopa1 Both are great game.
3:07 Beat it
2:44 The ability to flick the whip is actually extremely useful in a lot of ways - the limp whip can deal damage, so you can simply move it around and have it hit things all over the place.
It can even block Death's sickles if you hold it up in the air.
How is no one talking about how “devil’s castle Dracula X rondo of blood” is the most badass name for a video game ever?
4:52 They should have called it "Super Castlevania 5".
This would have been consistent with the precursor "Super Castlevania 4", and it would have also made sense with the whole "Super" theme for Super Nintendo titles.
Damn James, you did horror so well, such atmosphere!
I cannot believe this video is now 14 years old 😳
Peak AVGN.
6:50 Just remember folks, the safety word is Alucard.
Gotta admit that intro into Super Castlevania 4 had to be THE most EPIC intro to anything I have ever seen yet in my life
Played the N 64 ones and the camera's not bad you just have to change mode to the situation.
"This game takes place in 1852. Were there fucking motorcycles back then?" Gets me every time. 😂
October means it's time to watch all the halloween AVGN's
Castlevania 4 ! Best game also for me !
Amen that!
Pale Horse Here, here! I rented it all the time . . .
Just beat Super Castlevania 4. Good game, but very frustrating to beat.
I like how this is just a rip from the screwattack days rather than the actual export itself. Brings me back to the good 'ol days
3:15 Now where have i heard that before?
Earthbound slashing sound?
Castlevania 64 & LoD are awesome games. Gained a cult following recently.
No
I actually loved the n64 castlevania games, and I think it's kinda unfair how you used nintendo power and game genie and stuff like that on the other games, but in castlevania 64 you didn't read about how to pass castle center, which wasn't hard at all.
Castlevania 64 sucks ass one of the worse games of the nintendo 64...
+alex3087 What ever dude, i finish the game when i was a little kid, and compare to the other castlevania games the 64 is shit and the worse of all.
+alex3087 I think you're the only "edgy teen" that likes that piece of shit LMAO
This is my fav videos. I love the whole Castlevania marathon
The music. Nothing ever compared. Except Mega Man X. And Street Fighter 2. But nothing else compares.
The Final Fantasy SNES games, Earthbound, Super Metroid, Super Mario World and Link to the Past.
Back in the 90s when I was given a choice between a male or female character I almost always picked the female character because they were almost always faster than the male characters. Zombies at my neighbors is a perfect example.
Peach in Super Mario 2 she can float
4:40 Dracula X for SNES
“Dracula turns into a Devil wearing a Speedo” 🤣🤣🤣
Everyone is gonna call me a weirdo, but i love castlevania 64, it's even muy favorite game
I'll you what, it's one of my favorite N64 games,
1:00 I thought it said ASSlevania IV
I really love Super Castlevania IV, I really agree with you Nerd
Someone's likely said this, but holding in the whip button and swinging it around blocks projectiles. Very handy.
Castlevania 64 is one of my favorite castlevanias, I finished it when I was 12 years old, it was really difficult.
I thought it was easy save for a few parts.
Shame he couldn't play Symphony of the Night at the time, but I'd love to see him and Mike play it sometime
Joe Moorman
By "at the time" I'm pretty sure he meant back when James was younger.
Castlevania 4 and symphony of the night are easily the best games in franchise
Just listening to the Nerd talking about Castlevania IV sounds as if he's worshipping it. It is an amazing game, no doubt. It feels verrrry dark.
It's Halloween time! Here for my annual watching of this.
We need new castlevania with 2.5D graphic
Surprised that hasn't been done, really. Sonic's done it, Mario still does it, why not the Belmonts? But would it be a portable or home console?
drockman92 It was done...two times, actually.
on Nintendo DS there are some good castlevania 2D, also you can play Miror of fate on 3DS it's 2.5D
I was unaware that 2.5D was done. I thought the DS Castlevania was 2D, but as long as it's a good game, I'll play it.
Rondo of blood remake is 2.5D (for PSP)
I used to play this game around the Halloween times as a little kid. What a badass game and I still have the game cartridge with me
The Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Gamecube, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS/3DS & Nintendo Switch are my number 1 favorite Nintendo video game consoles ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
home oh
Devil's castle Dracula x Rondo of blood
Speech 100
It's a damn shame you missed Symphony of the Night in your youth. I've been playing Castlevania since part 1 and SOTN is my absolute favorite. Aria of Sorrow on the GBA is up there too. Two great games that don't necessarily resemble the originals. Part 4 is my 2nd favorite.
Aria of Sorrow is a top 3 maybe at least 4 best castlevania games of all time. sadly it's not as praised as the other ones from what i can tell.
+Raiden2421 Because of Dawn of sorrow, wich is not a bad game, but a unnecessary sequel without the gothic artwork. My favorite ones are SOTN, Aria of Sorrow, IV and Ecclesia.
***** I agree.
