Thank you! I was really expecting a bigger figure especially as in the release images he looks massive! But this is a case where PNSO has gone with a more conservative size esimate. The colour scheme is really something to behold; I didn't expect to like it as much as I did!
I was conflicted on the scaling of this Torvosaurus but I decided to place the order because overall it is stunning. I can head-cannon this to being the smaller Tanneri species and the striding pose may account for it being shorter than the PNSO Allosaurus.
Seems to be whenever I get a PNSO I find myself wanting to share my thoughts, just received this guy today (a bit late to the party I know) and I gotta say Conner has quickly become one of my favs, for a somewhat older model I think he displays PNSO’s craft even better then some of their newer figures! And of course DD thank you for the review, as usual I wanted to see if this figure had your stamp of approval before getting it
@Oscar Valdes I'm absolutely delighted to hear my viewers own thoughts on the figures, always! I hope that you received a good paint job. The issue many people have with PNSO is the loss of paint quality with subsequent runs. And you are too kind and generous! 🤩I definitely don't dare claim to have any more approving right than the next enthusiast, I'm just nuts about anatomy and have put off doing a real paleontology course forever lol! I'm glad youlike this figure. PNSO really makes pleasing theropods. In your opinion, where do you think the older figures excel compared to the more recent ones?
@@DinosDragons I actually only started collecting PNSO figures recently, their old figures never did it for me. The scales where too large and something about the way the legs and arms where sculpted didn't sit right with me. 2021 is when I started looking at PNSO more favorably, mainly due to their updated and more refined sculpting aesthetics. Zhuchengtyrannus was my first pnso figure and it's since become an addiction. I do think 2022 was the best year over all for the company but since I only started collecting them recently I've been going back and getting some of the old gems that I think fit this newer aesthetic like Conor, their olorotitan, yutyrannus, etc. With this comes the territory of getting sloppy paint apps but fortunately they haven't been too bad. luckily im a paleo artist as well so if I do get a figure in need of some touch ups I will see it as fun little project.
Fantastic review as always. I’m always bummed that PNSO is in the no-lip camp and also wishing they would move to bases to allow for more dynamic poses. I’m with you on the confusion as to why the Allosaurus didn’t have the enlarged thumb claw.
I also think the base would solve the warping issue. Right now their figures are so well-balanced, but the only thing taking away from that is how easily the feet warp in hot climates. Bases however would probably add to cost and that's unfortunate, because as you can see people are already complaning about PNSO prices.
Hey DD! Thanks to your reviews, I've jumped down the rabbit hole that is PNSO Prehistoric animals (jury's still out on whether or not, I'll get the marine reptiles). These figures in my opinion, are the best looking (accurately, consistently & overall) on the market. I just wish they would revisit their vinyl dept to give us Sauropods (I know Titanosaurs would be difficult to do in 1:35 scale). I just came back from visiting family in New York, and went on my annual visit to the AMNH and saw the Apatosaurus mount and of course occupying it's own hall (and NOT fitting) the Patagotitan . My (current) wish list consists of: Acrocanthosaurus, Mapusaurus, Suchomimus, Styracosaurus, the Therizinosaurs spoken of in the comments, ANY other Ceratopsian, Ankylosaur/Nodosaur, and Tyrannosaur not previously done.
As a lover of sauropods, I definitely agree! I think they couldn't realistically do 1:35 sauropods that would be affordable for us unless they went the hollow vinyl route, and since most of us like to have impressive models of impressive giants, it would be really welcome. As much as they've done great with their offerings so far, sauropods are a group that have been neglected. Nice wish list you have there. I'm really surprised they haven't done Styracosaurus, but I know some companies will do a trial run of techniques and paint apps on less iconic dinosaurs first before executing big on the more popular ones. I actually have only one Styracosaurus after all this time, the 2001 Safari Ltd, and would love another one! Congrats on your annual AMNH visit! It must be a great feeling to be able to actually go down and view these mounts for yourself. Pictures and even videos can't really convey that sense of awesomeness, epecially for sauropod dinosaurs!
What theropods would I like them to do? I'll just cut to the chase: neovenator, utahraptor, daspletosaurus, lythronax, dilophosaurus, cryolophosaurus, monolophosaurus, velociraptor, anzu (or another oviraptorian), afrovenator, fukuiraptor. But if they are going to make a small giganotosaurus as they did with the carcharodontosaurus I prefer they dont do it and hope for a GR version someday.
Thanks for your list! I am surprised they haven't tackled Velociraptor and Dilophosaurus yet. These two would be awesome rendered by PNSO! They did do a Giganotosaurus before that was 16" (40.6cm), which might be something you would like to look at.
@@DinosDragons by the way, of all the channels dedicated to the subject I like this the most. You go into details such as scale and anatomy that I appreciate you include.
such a beautiful Torvosaurus model and awesome review...i want more large carnosaurs model by PNSO..if they do 1/35 scale Giganotosaurus slightly longer than Wilson around 37cm that would be awesome...Mapusaurus is another one which needs some love in figure form ...Acrocanthosaurus is also good one...for Tyrannosaurids i guess Daspletosaurus, Gorgosaurus....but i wish they also do some Titanosaurs (hollow figure so that they don't cost million bucks).....although my guess are they are going to release a Torosaurus or Triceratop next...
I would agree 1000% on the titanosaurs. My favourite group is the sauropods, and titanosaurs my favourite group of my favourite group! PNSO has shown it can give us really good quality hollow figures, and paint them well. I hope they continue to do this. I don't see how we can get decent 1:35 scales sauropods otherwise!
I thought there was only the original thumb claw which couldn't be attributed conclusively to Torvosaurus. I wasn't aware there were others. Shows you how much I've neglected the theropods compared to other dinosaurs lol!
Ah! Well you know a lot more about theropods than I do it would seem! I wasn't aware of that, and to be honest I was always lazy when it came to learning about the theropods 😁 Thank you for your insightful comment! I'll check it out and learn further!
Actually I got that when I had the two side by side. Though from different clades, I think that for many people, if they only got the Allosaurus, they'd be pretty happy. Torvosaurus is one that many people were looking forward to, but the size is a little underwhelming. Especially compared to the Allosaurus, you feel like size-wise it's not really the biggest predator of the Jurassic. I'd say only someone really interested in dinosaurs enough to want representatives from different clades need get both. I'll say though that the colour on this is really pleasing.
Recently i've been getting some from Amazon, and I also have a source in China. Both should come about the same time ever since PNSO decided to do simulataneous worldwide release. If you get it from Amazon it should be fast.
It's definitely smaller than I was expecting. I actually got a bit of a shock when I opened the box, and then compared him to the PNSO Allosaurus. A bit bigger would have been nice, definitely the same size or bigger than the Allosaurus. But it seems like PNSO took the conservative size estimate.
@@DinosDragons my pnso carcharodontosaurus and Tuojiangosaurus arrived yesterday, I want this figure but I think Ill have to buy tarbosaurus with ankylosaurus or lambeosaurus instead.
@@DinosDragons Its actually a good 1:35 scale, in fact is even too largue if we are considering just Torvo and no Edmarka. Elvis is the biggest T. tanneri and is just shy over 10m, 10,1 to 10,2 actually, while the biggest E. rex is 10,3 to 10,4 at much. You are probably thinking about the Torvo is usually depicted in media, but that dinosaur never existed, it is a internet myth, a pop culture "monster". Those outdated reconstructions were based on few material and completed with allosauroid proportions resulting in enormous estimates. But reality is different, after more findings we now know that it had very different proportions to allosauroids and standard avetheropod, more like their cousins the spinosaurids, that is: very short hindlimbs, very enlongated skull and flatened rib cage, like that of Ceratosaurus, basal tetanurans, even such as Yangchuanosaurus and Sinraptor. Meanwhile Allosaurus rib cage is broad, barrel-like, like that of tyrannosaurids, although not as extreme, this is a unique condition among allosauroids, since more derived ones like carcharodontosaurids had flatter longer rib cage. So its normal to feel Allosaurus bigger side to side against a same size Torvo. For example in Dry Mesa quarry where the type Torvos are (and big ones, 9,4m in length, only behind Elvis) 3 Allo of the same size ~9,3-9,4m where found, with femoras of 960mm and tibias of ~810mm, for comparison Dry Mesa Torvos tibias are only 720mm, much shorter legs. Also the weight of those specimens should be equal and I wouldnt be surprised if Allo had some advantage there too because of the broader body and much bigger illiums and longer pubis. You can see this comparing the PNSO Saurophaganax, which is basically a big Allosaurus fragilis as is directly based on it, is very accurate, and its body is much wider at the proximal dorsals, where the scapulas are. So overall I think this Torvo is the best representation so far of the real animal, based in actual and up to date data, with shallow long skull and flat body and really accurate size, even in the high mark, as it is based on the biggest ever found (E. rex and Elvis). Theres no Torvo of 11-12m, never have been, those depictions were chimerical filled with allosaur body parts. PS: edited for better readability and spelling errors.
@@JohnAvery-zl2yq Thank you for your excellent commentary John! It's always great to hear from real theropods aficianados, since this is one clade I really have relatively little interest and hence, knowledge in. Even now, 2 years after making this video, I discover shortfalls in my knowledge all the time. For some weird reason I am unable to pin your comment, so I'm going to just reference it directly in the description, which isn't ideal. I would love to hear your opinion of the skull. I know many theropod enthusiasts were very unhappy with the proportions, such as its being too big. Could you comment on that? PS: Just a request, if you could break up your comment into paragraphs. Your reply had plenty of good stuff in there but I had to read it about four times to make sure I absorbed all of it. It would make it easier for other viewers to access your knowledge as well. Thanks! 😁
@@DinosDragons Sure! sorry for not put it in paragraphs. About the skull. For me is pretty well done, is clearly based on Elvis, the most up to date and accurate reconstruction. Every paleontologist now recomend to follow that specimen and is the base even to reconstruct related taxa such Megalosaurus. The size, comparing to the torso and overall length, is correct. Now we know, thanks to newly discovered material, that Torvo has one of the most proportionally longest skull among theropods, in line with spinosaurids. This "new" look of Torvos head and overall body shape may be shocking for peoble that its not very into the field and is used to the old reconstruction (is hard to keep up with the latest studies of the constantly updating paleontology). Now im going to try to explain why these changes. Since the begining of the description of the skull material of Dry Mesa specimens back in 1991, paleontolgists used to fill the gaps with allosaurid bones and proportions, some even thought at the time that Torvo might be an allosaur, so tis not surprising. The skull material consist of a premaxilla, incomplete maxilla (lacking most of the ascending process, thiswill matter later), complete lacrimal, almost complete postorbital, incomplete jugal and a quadrate. Of this, premaxilla, maxilla and jugal were of exceptional size, the quadrate and lacrimal were rather small so they atributed to the smallest specimen of the quarry (3 specimen are present in Dry Mesa, 2 of similar size and one slightly smaller). With this, paleontologists took the size difference with allo and isometrically reconstructed the rest of the skull, resulting in a giant usual carnosaur head, and a body in accordance with allosaur body plan, hence the 11 to 12m estimations. 2006, Torvosaurus gurneyi enters the chat. Contrary to the Dry Mesa maxilla, the one of gurneyi is complete, slightly bigger, and the ascendin process is very low, subparallel to the ventral margin of the maxilla, forming a narrow < shape of the anteorbital fenestra, instead the c of allosauroids. In addition with more postcrania material the authors concluded a ~9,5m total length for that individual. 2010's Elvis is discovered. Finally a good asociated postcrania elements, the whole dorsal series, sacrum and some cervicals, plus complete ilium, pubis, ischia and femora, but more important: a complete maxilla. This again confirmed the narrow < shape, like gurney. So back to the Dry mesa specimens, the maxilla is reconstructed like the complete ones, and its found that now it fits perfectly with the small short lacrimal, this was in fact part of the big individual, and all the cranial elements of Dry Mesa are attributable to the same specimen, and the whole skull can be now reconstructed accurately, resulting in a very elongated shallow skull, you can see it nowadays at the Cincinnati museum. The premaxilla, maxilla and jugal is almost the entire length of the skull, with the overlaping parts, translates in 1150-1180mm skull for the Dry mesa, 1280mm for Elvis, and a total legth of 9,4m and ~10,2m respectively. Thanks to Elvis postcrania, now we can compare directly Torvo and E. rex. Aside the most probable synonymy, the size of Elvis is close to Edmarka: (Elvis/Edmarka) 150/140mm caudal, 1200/1270mm dorsal ribs, +800/866mm pubis. The short (but stout) pubis show that the belly was shallow and formed a continum with the ribs, parallel to the ground, different of the deep bellys (due the big long pubis) of allosauroids and tyrannosauroids. So I think PNSO's model is the most accurate I've ever seen, is up to date to the latest discoverys, and for me it clearly shows that people at PNSO are well informed. They chose to go full accuracy to represent the real animal, risking to shock some people, they could have chosen to do a more classic representation but that would be a fictional animal and for me a clear error, im glad they didnt. PS: Sorry for the long text. I love your reviews, they are the best, im new with PNSO, im more in high end collectibles but as soon as I saw your videos and how well the models are morphological and anatomically speaking, im all in. Now im going to the Daspleto video to try to throw some light regarding the hindlimb proportions, as I see some confusion in the coments about what may be wrong.
Definitely! Deinocheirus was one of the biggest mysteries in my youth, and to have the mystery solved is something I never expected. And who knew how weird it would look. I think this definitely could use the PNSO treatment!
Tell me about it. Unfortunately the way the wind blows, 1:40 seems to be rapidly dwindling and dying out. Even CollectA's deluxe dinosaurs claimed to be 1:40 often disappointment when you actually measure them. I hang my hopes now on 1:35!
@@DinosDragons Yeah ...I have a few 1:35 scale dinos that (for some species or even similar genus) could represent a large example to still fit in my collection. However I've now since started making my own 1:40 from polymer clay (and some don't look too bad =¬).
I wish they did dinosaurs from India. We have so little interest in paleontology here. I have no hope for a local company ever making a scientifically accurate dinosaur.
I'm sorry to hear that. It would be really awesome to have a company do dinosaurs of their own country, just like with PNSO tackling Chinese dinosaurs. I like the idea of heritage, plus the fossils to based the sculpts on would be so easily accessible to local artists.
I _was_ surprised by that and wish it was bigger too. That said... Torvosaurus was around 10-11m. That makes this figure about 1:34 -35 scale. In Europe, Allosaurus _europaeus_ was about 7-8m. In the US, Allosaurus _jimmadseni_ was 8-9m while _fragilis_ was 8.5-9.7m, while fragmentary material suggests large sizes may even have been possible (Sarurophaganax may have been a very large Allosaurus) As for Carcharodontosaurus, earlier size estimates were overestimated. I talk about that in my GR Toys Carcharodontosaurus review. PNSO states it is using an adult estimate of 11m. All that aside, Allosaurus doesn't have a claimed scale by PNSO as far as I know, so they may simply not be in scale. Also keep in mind that length often doesn't account for volume and bulk of animals.
@@DinosDragons true! i am having a hard time deciding which one to get, the Carcharodontosaurus, Torvo or allosaurs. Which is your favourite of the three? thanks :), love the content btw
It depends on where you sit on the lips vs lipless arguments. But I would say that this really is quite similar to the Allosaurus, and gives me the impression of being smaller, even though the size is about the same. I recommend to people who don't like this, or are undecided, to just go with the Allosaurus. Save some space and money too!
The head is not boxy enough and the whole thorax are is too short and rounded, with legs proportionally too long. Looks like a very fat Allosaurus, but certainly not a Torvosaurus. Side by side with the Allosaurus from the same firm they look to have the same shapes, body ration and arms size, which was not the case.
We don't have a lot of material for Torvosaurus (including the head) so most reconstructions borrow from other megalosaurids and nothing definitive can be said. I agree with you that it looks fat. But overlaying a skeletal of the Scott Hartmanm reconstruction over this model, the bony landmarks are quite close. I would say that the spine looks like it should have a lower profile than it does in the model. Whose reconstruction are you using? Would be happy to double check. Hopefully we'll have more certainty when Elvis is described. Just crossing my fingers and waiting. Sure is taking its own sweet time though... it's been nine years!
this headshape is more accurate than the boxy one, just search elvis the torvosaurus, its a subadult torvosaurus tanneri and the skull of pnso is basically that but fully grow instead not subadult, and like dinodragons said skeletals do fit in the body it is a bit chunky but not inaccurately chunky animals can be fat too
I didn’t like it. I had it for a week or two, still didn’t like it. The look, the material, the pose, the size, the paint, I like none of them. PNSO is interesting, sometimes the photos or even the reviews can’t justify the real thing. A lot of time, I didn’t want to get one when I see the photo, and I get it just because of your review (the story and the nature of the dinosaur) Usually they will be better in person, like 血王龍 馬普龍and 蛇髮女怪龍, they look kind of dumb on the photos but great in person; not this one, this one if opposites.
Also, mine doesn’t have the special face color that yours has. Mine is very white and boring. I actually started to notice that every single one is different even on the same model. I owned two Cameron and two Lucas, they are different! Especially the Cameron, I have one that is much detailed. Luckily, both Lucas are about equally nice. Also they stand differently; same stand support, one of the Lucas can push in behind its hands, one can only push till right before the hands. Means one stands higher than another.
Unfortunately, I know many people were unhappy with the PNSO Torvosaurus. A lot has to do with the size and shape of the head. One thing I did like was the colour and pattern scheme. Grey in the body and yellow in the face makes for really outstanding colours. I didn't think Gorgosaurus looked bad on the photos though... it looked super good to me! I am not sure if you got a late release. It's a sad fact that the best paint apps are usually the first production run ones. And then they gradually drop in quality. Watch this really good video that explains why. th-cam.com/video/xpuqHuYH34I/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=JurassicPlastic As far as possible try to get the 首次发布 ones first!

And of course DD thank you for the review, as usual I wanted to see if this figure had your stamp of approval before getting it
@Oscar Valdes
I'm absolutely delighted to hear my viewers own thoughts on the figures, always!
PNSO please, I need to feed my family 😭
🤣🤣
no family, only dinosaurs
Fantastic review as always. I’m always bummed that PNSO is in the no-lip camp and also wishing they would move to bases to allow for more dynamic poses. I’m with you on the confusion as to why the Allosaurus didn’t have the enlarged thumb claw.
I also think the base would solve the warping issue. Right now their figures are so well-balanced, but the only thing taking away from that is how easily the feet warp in hot climates. Bases however would probably add to cost and that's unfortunate, because as you can see people are already complaning about PNSO prices.
Looks amazing. But I'm really hoping they do a Ceratosaurus nasicornis!
Definitely! Especially since it is so well-known. I love my large size Ceratosaurus, but a 1:35 is a glaring omission out of the Jurassic 3 for me!

Congrats, you'll love him! The colour is really nice on this one.
Pictures and even videos can't really convey that sense of awesomeness, epecially for sauropod dinosaurs!
solid gorgeus 👊
Definitely! PNSO has a way of rendering pleasing animals with simple poses and colours that still look good!
@@DinosDragons is this torvosaurus hollow??
How about an Australovenator PNSO? Please? Great review DD!
Thanks Richard! I didn't expect to like him as much as I did!
Fingers crossed for an acrocanthosaurus and ceratosaurus🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
Definitely! Two well-known species glaringly missing from the PNSO treatment!
Actually we do have Torvosaurus thumb claws preserved and they are MASSIVE
I thought there was only the original thumb claw which couldn't be attributed conclusively to Torvosaurus. I wasn't aware there were others. Shows you how much I've neglected the theropods compared to other dinosaurs lol!
Question! The Torvosaurus figure is not stable and falls over. Are you working on something?
Ummm what do you mean? Working on something? This one definitely is not stable. My Sinraptor also can't stand without using the stand.
Ah! Well you know a lot more about theropods than I do it would seem! I wasn't aware of that, and to be honest I was always lazy when it came to learning about the theropods 😁 Thank you for your insightful comment! I'll check it out and learn further!
Torvosaurus i know remeber that Dino in dinosaurs revolution
Torvosaurus is so so similar to Allosaurus....
I'm a spinosaurid fan so I'm just hoping for an Ichthyovenator for the fun sail factor
More spinosaurids... who can argue with that! I'm hoping for an updated 1:35 Spinosaurus and Suchomimus!
I really hope PNSO do a Juratyrant!
I'm not sure if PNSO could do much based on what remains we have. Then again we did get Huanghetitan too so who knows! 😀
@@DinosDragons true but Stokesasaurus is a close relative of it and has often been used to fill in much of the gaps
How long did it take to come in the mail, and did u get it from Amazon ?
Recently i've been getting some from Amazon, and I also have a source in China. Both should come about the same time ever since PNSO decided to do simulataneous worldwide release. If you get it from Amazon it should be fast.
이녀석은 마음에든다 사야겠다
조금 작은게 아쉽지만..

Very nice ...too large for my 1:40 ish collection though.
I like the idea of heritage, plus the fossils to based the sculpts on would be so easily accessible to local artists.
why did they make it smaller than their own allosaurus??! this and the carcharodontosaurus are far too small :((
I _was_ surprised by that and wish it was bigger too. That said...
Torvosaurus was around 10-11m. That makes this figure about 1:34 -35 scale.
In Europe, Allosaurus _europaeus_ was about 7-8m.
In the US, Allosaurus _jimmadseni_ was 8-9m while _fragilis_ was 8.5-9.7m, while fragmentary material suggests large sizes may even have been possible (Sarurophaganax may have been a very large Allosaurus)
As for Carcharodontosaurus, earlier size estimates were overestimated.
Horns are to much like allosaurus, and the teeth shouldn’t be showing
It depends on where you sit on the lips vs lipless arguments. But I would say that this really is quite similar to the Allosaurus, and gives me the impression of being smaller, even though the size is about the same. I recommend to people who don't like this, or are undecided, to just go with the Allosaurus. Save some space and money too!
its just extra keratin, not unreasonable
