Greetings from Brazil, a big fan of your channel here. Have you ever heard of an operating system called PsychOS? It has two very interesting versions to be tested on this pc, one called PsychDOS and the other PsychOS486, I believe it would make a good video, besides it is very rare to find videos talking about this specific system.
Clavier means Keyboard. And the reason why you were having issues trying to put numbers in the partition size is because since you had selected as French as the keyboard layout, you have to use the Shift key to type the numbers above the letters. When typing without the shift key, you're inputting symbols or the accents on the characters such as é â ï ô etc..
In German klavier is piano while keyboard is klaviatur but in French does piano translate as piano? Edit: Never used German for keyboard, searched on Google Translate.
@@otherssingpuree1779 Interesting, I've never heard of the word Klaviatur before until now. A PC Keyboard would be a Tastatur and an electronic piano is just refered to as "Keyboard". From what I've been able to find Klaviatur only applies to the keys of a piano (or other musical instruments)
Azerty may be one of the most flawed keyboard layout I know of. Like, there's a key for ù, a letter only used in the word "où" [where], but there is no way to write a capital é, present at the beginning of many words and names, without using alt codes (that doesn't work anymore in Windows 11). But I can write Ù quite easily, even though it is never used. Bonus: here's the number row but without the shift key: &é"'(-è_çà
Definitely interesting to see you install a French version of Windows. Only ever used French versions of Windows. Had to install Windows 7 once on a laptop i was repairing and had to make it Chinese and once i made it Chinese i was completely lost.

The quirks of old computing are fascinating looking from today's standpoint. Too much RAM, too much disk space, too much CPU speed... Today there's never enough of everything (at least until we reach the current limit but that's gonna take a while). Kinda wish there were more limits on things today, it makes engineers get creative to get more out of less.

I'm sorry, that's not true. Due to BIOS limitations you may not be able to boot on partitions extending past the _eight_ gigabyte mark but NT 4 has no problem accessing data partitions on IDE drives up to 128 GiB.
@@smd91xx It doesn't make sense _why_ it would be 4 gigabytes as I thought 2 was Windows' limit for FAT16. A thought I just had, what happens if you try installing on an already-existing NTFS partition? That might let you go up to eight gigabytes. Maybe even further, but then you'd have boot issues.
@Kernel NT It definitely can do more than 2GB. As others have said it can do 4GB which is actually the theoretical max for FAT16 although not compatible with all implementations. I didn't think NT let you format 4GB partitions as FAT16 but I just tried it and apparently it does.
Having Windows in a different language presents an opportunity to experiment further: I believe you could theoretically install Windows NT 4.0 English & French versions to the same partition, assuming that the Program Files directory has a completely different name on the French installation. Simply install one of the versions to a WINNT directory and the other to a directory of a different name. Both installations should coexist in the same partition as a dual boot without issues. Likewise this might allow other combinations like a French version of NT with an English version of 98SE, and so on, which might otherwise have collisions with a common Program Files directory. English 95B and NT4 work fine though, as their Program Files do not clobber one another by default, unless you install or "upgrade" something completely unnecessary like Internet Explorer on each.
Not sure about French, but I've used Polish versions of Windows all my life, going back all the way to the 3.1 days, and Polish 95/98 definitely used "Program Files", written in English. Current versions still do, actually, but it got really weird since Vista and 64-bit. On Polish 64-bit Windows, you've got "Program Files" for 64-bit apps, and "Pliki programów (x86)" for 32-bit apps. Why the inconsistency? Beats me. Then again, since Vista the localized names are just alternate display names for Explorer; the names in the physical filesystem are all in English.
Oh, Windows 11 has been officially released last week! It would be cool If you did a video running the final version of Windows 11 like you did with iOS 15.
@14:18 - It says"The installation utility cannot format this partition [NAME] on the disk with ID 0 on bus 0 on atapi, because it's too large. You will have to go back to the previous screen to create a smaller partition. To return to the previous screen without formatting this partition, press ENTER. To quit the installation program, press F3." Windows NT4 Workstation, at this time, could handle partitions of up to 4GB in size, which is why you're seeing this error.
@@bland9876 You're forgetting the fact that, in 1995, when NT4 saw its first release, many programs didn't even exceed 200 megabytes. In fact, they mostly didn't even approach 100. The limit was raised in Service Release 4, when the NTFS drivers where updated. Also, the _server_ family had different limits. There were constraints that the Workstation family had to deal with, mostly regarding limitations arising from BIOS configurations. Also, the fact that Logical Block Addressing limited hard disk size to begin with, had a large impact upon what you could and couldn't do. Windows 98 was released when Windows NT4 was at service release 6a, by which time most of its limitations had been resolved. But judging by the build number on screen in this video, I expect that this specific version of NT4 will have been at release 2 or 3 at the most. The RTM release did not support booting from CD ROM and this one did, so that strengthened my belief that the build used here is at least on service release 2.
@@bland9876 True. And there's the fact that developers don't have such limiting constraints to deal with. Back in the day, loads of software was written in pure assembly language. Much harder to code, but taking up much less space. Nowadays, because of the tremendous speed of current hardware and compilers, loads of stuff is written in C, C++, C# and the like. Easier to code, taking up more space. But there's also the phenomenon of shared code bases, meaning that a program which was originally written for Windows can be ported to Mac (for example) with relatively little effort. But this comes at a price, because it's all far less optimised than it could have been. So, again, things take up more space than they used to.
I honestly didn't expect the AZERTY keyboard layout to play into this. It was very much like when I accidentally switch my keyboard input from AZERTY to QWERTY because Windows has a shortcut for it and it's way too easy to switch between the two accidentally, apparently. It was a great watch as a French speaker who's only ever used French Windows for sure!
Back in the days I worked at a company that sold their own brand laptops at the repair departement. At this departement we also installed Windows. During this time I has to install a Japanese or Chinese version of Windows 98. This was very fun to do because the installer was complete in that language. I was able to install it due the fact that I had installed Windows 98 multiple times and by looking at the icons in Windows.
Hey Michael, I know something nice that you can bust out the $5 Windows 98 PC on, since you don't have anything that you can use the machine on. It's known as the Win9x Project, a custom all-in-one installation CD of Windows, which includes Windows 95, Windows 98 (first and second edition) and Windows ME. I distinctly remember messing around with this on virtual machines in the mid 2000s, and I'm interested to see it working on real hardware.
Please note that Windows NT 4.0 has a partition size restriction of a maximum of 4GB. You cannot install Windows NT 4.0 on a partition that is larger than 4GB, so if you have a bigger hard disk you need to shrink its size to 4GB. However, the rest of the unallocated storage space in computer management cannot be used to format the rest of the disk. I had a very similar gateway pc, except with was the 500mhz pentium 3 variant. It was the first pc that was truly mine when I was a kid. I obtained mine in January 2002 when it was already on the verge of being obsolete depending on the type of game you played. I somehow still got good use out of it for 3 solid years before the pc died in January 2005. Essentially it mostly played blizzard games like diablo, diablo 2, starcraft, warcraft, warcraft 2, warcraft 3 albeit kind of choppy at times. Funny enough during the last 2 months of owning this pc i played world of warcraft on launch and it was playable in the sense that PVP battlegrounds were not a thing yet in the game. Everything else was just year 1999 fps games like unreal tournament, quake 3, descent 3 and older 90s titles.

Bon choix. I used to speak French and I am feeling that it might not be such a bad idea to install French copies of software on my old machines to keep it up.
I once set my computer to Japanese for a couple of months as I thought that may be helpful for learning the language. Well, I ended up doing most of the stuff by muscle memory, just remembering where are which options, without really looking at the text... Besides, learning words such as "reboot", "properties" or "settings" isn't very helpful for actual communication.
Good video MJD. This was very random lol. Idea: Did you know about the Mario 64 PC Port? It would be epic if you try to play it on the 98PC with Windows 98 and see how it works out!
It's so good when you see in your notifications that there is a new Michael's video, im thinking maybe to take out of my house an old Windows XP laptop someday, maybe it would be a good donation to Michael :P
Even if you can't speak a language , if it's a latin/germanic/european one, you at least will recognize some word or other. To go completely blind through the process you'd have to pick a Chinese, Japanese, or, quite fittingly since this came from Morocco, Arabic version of the OS.
You know, this probably wouldn't be a bad way to learn a new language; taking something you know by heart and forcing yourself to use it in a different language.

Bravo Michael, vous avez bien tirez votre plan lors de l'installation, même si vous aviez une connaissance préalable de son fonctionnement. La prochaine fois continue avec une installation de Win95 ou Win NT en Flamand s'il vous plaît 😃
I once did this to a VM and had my mom guide me since she's Canadian
It was quite funny to me trying to navigate and see what english apps still ran
You should definitely show us Auto Route.. I bet the younger generation won't believe that such a thing existed and was useful (If you've already done this, sorry.. new subscriber here!)
2:27 nice easter egg on clock :D
Nice to see that it's finally back.
SO SHWEEEETTT...much love Tee with LIONS NAMED LEO.[the music worldwide}

Ah yes, good ole NT 4.0, I installed that many times when I did my network administrator internship, but never in French. I like your video on it and would definitely like to see you install flight simulator!
for a dude who can't speak french you did good
Je ne m'étais pas préparé à voir une version française de Windows 98 dessus !
(Traduction) i wasnt prepared to see a french version of windows 98 on it !
19:30 seeing a English dude trying to understand our keyboard is so magnificent to look at when English is the default one for most of the IT things and that as French with French keyboard we are forced to press , to put a M !
Ah, I’ve missed the 98 PC. Good to see it back.
Good Back
It always gets me when Steve balmer says and can you believe it reversi!
Mama didn’t raise no F3
I’m a native French speaker, but I never used the French versions of any operating systems
As someone who speaks french this is pretty cool to see someone who doesn't speak french trying to use it
Pas besoin de traduction merci ! :D Thanks for this version !
10:33 Dead CMOS battery, the default date is January 1990, and Michael doesn't seem to notice. Not a good start...
It would be epic if you try to play it on the 98PC with Windows 98 and see how it works out!
this is amazing!!
C'est sympa comme idée ! (It's a nice idea)
As somebody from Quebec, this video was quite interesting!
Return of the king
This PC as certainly been through a lot!
i'm a french youtuber and that pleasure to me to see that :)
i was missing the $5 windows 95 pc!
2:26 That "But" AT THE END tho lmao
Literally yesterday I was asking myself, uh-oh... what happened to the 98 PC? Well... now I know!
It's so good when you see in your notifications that there is a new Michael's video, im thinking maybe to take out of my house an old Windows XP laptop someday, maybe it would be a good donation to Michael :P
This series has become as exciting as MultimediaJay's Dellasaurus
OK... the installation is in French and it's not a problem for you apparently... Good video by the way
Even if you can't speak a language , if it's a latin/germanic/european one, you at least will recognize some word or other. To go completely blind through the process you'd have to pick a Chinese, Japanese, or, quite fittingly since this came from Morocco, Arabic version of the OS.
I love that when he says "but", he shows that photo. Its funni
I was pausing the video thanks for telling me😅
You know, this probably wouldn't be a bad way to learn a new language; taking something you know by heart and forcing yourself to use it in a different language.
