    I am a very first time user/owner of ANY Nikon product and I was gifted a D7100 camera with 5 lenses... This 50mm is absolutely amazing and "nifty 50" is an understatement to me lol. This is more like a federal requirement 50 HAHAHA. I have the Tamrom 28-75mm and it does not compare so I carry this one. I also have a fully manual nikkor 50 that obliterates the other lens with this one. As a first time owner of Nikkon let alone this lens to boot, I want anything D series of this lens lol. It's amazing and I think commercially for my work this will make me a great ton of money.

    Oh, that's classic. Works incredibly on both F90x and D90. Also, great to see the sharpness graph - I had some suspicions on the aperture that works best, but it's much better to see some science that confirm that. Thanks a lot!

    I own every version of the Nikkor 50mm f1.8 F mount lens and I feel from decades of shooting these lenses that the D series version resolves a bit better and is sharper than those made before and after.

    Another benefit of the D Type lens is that, unlike the G Type lens, the D lens will auto focus on auto focus film cameras like the F4s AND can be used in the fully Manual mode with the Aperture ring. Because I shoot both film and digital cameras, I am now collecting "like new" used Nikkor D type lenses for all of my Nikon cameras from my old Nikon F, F2AS, F4s, to my D70. D80, D600 and D850.

    Great video Tom! The clarity on those sample images is just stunning, we forget really quick that lenses made 20 years ago are still up to par for 99% of us 99% of the time. Now you should prepare a shootout between all the 50's Nikon made for DSRLs FX (50mm 1.8G, 50mm 1.8D, 50mm 1.4G, 50mm 1.4D, 50mm 1.2 Noct) and see how they perform compared to each other, that would be interesting although realistically only from a technical point of view since this review has shown, that they're all probably more than good enough for most situations. Keep up the good work!

    • @tom_photo
      @tom_photo  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi! Thanks for asking. You will want to use A-priority or manual (M) mode. M mode is the best. Then select "Non-CPU Lens Data" and select focal length and max aperture. The under "Custom settings" go to aperture settings and set it to aperture ring. (I may not be absolutely correct with every menu item here because I don't own a D90 but I hope you can figure it out by analogy.) Set the focus mode to manual and use the aperture ring to change the F-stop. Let me know if you need more help. Kind regards!

    Hello there! I don't expect you to reply to my comment to your more than one year old video, but if you happen to see it, I want to tell you that I got this lens for my d3500 and at open aperture it does not seem to focus on infinity. The depth of field is all messed up and even when I try to focus closer dostances it's always a bit off. Any idea whether it's the camera or the lens with the problem?

    • @tom_photo
      @tom_photo  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Măgulean! Thank you for asking. This lens and this camera are optically compatible but autofocus is not possible since neither the camera nor the lens has a motor. How do you determine that the lens doesn't focus properly? Before I can help you better please confirm that the lens focuses to infinity at every F-stop value other than the smallest? A possible problem could be an aperture mechanism issue or aperture blades sticking. Or it could be a lens calibration issue. Can you do this aperture test: Set the lens to different aperture values and observe if the focus-to-infinity issue persists. Try to pinpoint the exact F-stop where you see issues. It's also a good idea to clean the lens contacts and update camera firmware. Kind regards!

    • @maguleanvalentin5099
      @maguleanvalentin5099 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@tom_photo yes, so I've tried focusing on different focal lengths, at it seems to have a sweet spot between about 1 and 8 meters at max aperture. Then, between 8 meters and infinity, it again does not focus, under about 30 meters and, of course, if the aperture is fully open, it won't be sharp. I can fix that by closing the aperture, but then I won't get as much light and the sole reason I wanted this lens was it's very large aperture (that I guess I could have gotten from any other more fitting lens, but the "nifty fifty is the nifty fifty")
      Thank you a lot for your help, you have my like and subscribe.
      P.S. do you, by any chance, have a recommendation for a 1.8 lens for the d3500?

      @@maguleanvalentin5099 Hi Hi Măgulean! Thank you very much. I suspect there might be a technical problem with your current lens. Has been cleaned or serviced recently? Indeed, I have a recommendation for Nikon D3500. One of my favorite lenses to go with it is the Nikkor AF-S 50mm F/1.8 G ( th-cam.com/video/cz1i38ZGQ5U/w-d-xo.html ). • @tom_photo

      Hi Ihman! Thank you for asking. For fitness videos indoors you probably need a relatively wide angle lens and you want auto focusing. If you're not doing portrait, just put this on permanent f2.8 indoors and f4 outdoors then you have a very sharp and fast lense for any shot.

      Hi 3 A.M.! Thank you for asking. This is a great all around lens and will work well for architecture, too. The effective focal length will depend of whether you use it with full frame or crop sensor camera. With crop sensor it might be too narrow for interiors. But it will depend on what and how you photograph. Please keep in mind that it has no motor inside, so if your camera body doesn't have it either then you need to focus manually. Kind regards!

      @@tom_photo yeah but i have to highlight though this lens autofocus dont work with mirrorless camera or camera without the screwdrive motor on the body. The fact that modern cameras doesnt have the autofocus motor on the body itself is a mystery to me, as putting the motor on the lens will increase the price of the lens significantly and the lens will be less durable as if you drop the lens, you could damage the autofocus motor on the lens. Also the lens motor could also get damaged by mishandling the lens. Theres less occurance of that when using a camera body with its own motor.
