I live closest to Fort Wayne (NW Ohio). Hadn’t heard of Goshen until I found an old 1800’s Spohn’s Distemper Company bottle (iodine and compound dried up in the still completely corked bottle) once made in Goshen.
Nice to see the modern city.

Used to live just outside of Goshen. Goshen isn't the most bustling area. Downtown closes at like 6 pm so not much to do after that. The RV industry isn't great. It's so up and down. Right now so many are laid off.

I live in Milwaukee and follow John McGivern's visits to towns. In 1976 I was a salesman for Duplex Products, which opened a manufacturing plant there to produce business forms. A few years later they opened a pressure sensitive label plant. The company melded into other companies over the last couple of decades, but I'd bet a lot of those former employees still live in the area.

I actually used to work for one of the companies out there in Elkhart. Not sure I can say the name, but they were not small, over 1,500 employees I think. Ran a CNC Mill for over 90% of my work. I started with nothing more than a high school degree, making $13/hr back in 2016. Left for a better place in 2021 making over $25/hr.
Be willing to show up on time, and try your best, even if you know nothing but simple math.

Did you live in Elkhart? My friend does. He pays less than $700 a month for rent. He also just had to switch units because there was a literal gun fight across the street and a few bullets went through several walls in his unit.
$13/hr is what? $520 a week. After tax? Not sure the tax rate on that, I would say that if you are the type to carry insurance, have a 401k and give the government a loan with your tax money by paying too much every week, you would take home about $350.
Not sure what position in life afforded you the luxury of being able to spend 2 weeks of your take home pay on rent alone and feel like it was ok, but that isnt realistic. Car payments, car insurance, food, gas, blah blah blah. You know that we dont live in an area where it is that easy to get around either. You were just scraping by?

I lived in Goshen from 1990 through 1995. The city was dead. Half of the Main Street store fronts were vacant. No theater, no trendy restaurants, no bike trails.

    • @tommywolfe2706
      @tommywolfe2706 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No bike trails? Are you kidding me?
I am 40. I was born in 1982. We have dozens of miles of trails for walking and biking....on waterfront. From Bainertown and all of the connecting trails, to the biking/walking path that cuts through Goshen all the way to the trails that go out from Abshire park all the way out to Shipshewana, literally. You can bike from New Paris to Shipshe, non stop and safe. What are you even talking about?
We probably have the best bike friendly infrastructure around and it was that way back when you are talking about because I know....I ran track and cross country back then (graduated 2001) and have always felt blessed to have the parks around here that we do.
Also, we have "the electric brew"....or did...its now a different place, but the coffee shop. I dont know what you mean by "trendy" restaurants....but we have always had a decent selection.
You know what sucks? Being from the Goshen area and moving to an area in Wyoming in the mountains where the nearest grocery store is 40 minutes and the nearest wal mart is 1.5 hours away. Perspective is everything. Or move to Indy and have to wait in traffic for an hour to get out on the highway in the morning. Who cares if its alive if it takes away your life to gain access to it.

@@tommywolfe2706 Well, I stand by what I wrote. During that time period (1990 - 1995), Goshen held nothing interesting for me, a young adult man in my mid-20s.
I'm well aware of the current state of the city, as I live nearby. I love the Pumpkinvine trail, the Goshen Brewery, etc, etc.
Ask your parents about that specific time period -- in my opinion a very low point in the history of Goshen. Maybe they will share my opinion. In the '70s and '80s Goshen was an interesting, thriving town (my opinion)... like it is today, but in a slightly different way. Perhaps you and I had different experiences during that time... and that's okay. Take care.

I live in Goshen and its great but dont make the RVs stuff look like sunshine and roses. Our job market is fragile and not working in the employees favor here.

    • @tommywolfe2706

This area is the RV capital of the world, but that has lent it to being a major rail hub and so other businesses flourish here due to ease of access to transport. I have lived and worked ALMOST exclusively my whole adult life in Elkhart county. Worked at Aurora Cabinets, Commodore homes, Nibco, Veada, lippert, Keystone (final in 2 plants, welding in 1)......live and work in New Paris now and have had great jobs in the RV industry making bank, but was subject to the plant shut downs last year. Luckily, there are other jobs around that are constant, that have great work environments that treat their employees decent.
RV employees are spoiled. I know. I am still spoiled and am using my new more humble position to work on that part of me. Working for an RV company is like winning the lottery, it pays so well. It is sunshine and roses. Most people waste that gift on stupid things. The smart ones can see it as a blessing. Most RV employees dont work in their own favor. They are mostly spoiled.

@@tommywolfe2706 yeah. I just meant that 3/4 jobs are factory/RV positions so if there is a big shake up in the economy at some point a lot of people could get screwed out of a job. Theres also very little options besides factory work which really sucks if you dont want to work there

@@gigiis526 🤣 victim mentality? So all of us can just quit and start a business right? The job market here is very fragile if factory work declines. You dont seem to understand how societal issues work if you are so focused on me as an individual

I live in New Paris and Goshen is where I have to go sometimes to get things and you can see the decline. I walk on the trails going from the dam down to Interra all the time and have lately (within the last couple years) been worried about being robbed/attacked at night when walking, and I am not an easy looking target.
You can read police reports now and we actually have shootings around here. Drive by shootings. Yeah, gangs is one thing. The sanctuary status of the city for undocumented/illegals is also a huge factor.
