Hello Andy, firstly thank you so much for sharing your enthusiasm for these wonderful machines and taking the trouble to produce your mesmerising content for us to enjoy. I only came across your site by chance recently as I am from the 1950s and I have been a bit slow to cotton on to this TH-cam stuff. I bought a Scirocco in 1988/9 from the proprietor of Starbikes in Hull who had used her as his training bike for racing. He was the same height, 6ft, and reach as me and she fitted me perfectly. I loved the way she rode so much that she became my daily ride. We emigrated to Spain in 2000 and I rode her all over the Andalusian coastline from Granada to Tarifa and spent many years riding her around Gibraltar and the surrounding province of Cadiz. We ended up living in the Canaries and then finally in Mallorca where she was stolen from a boat in Palma in 2012. I had lent her to a visiting sailor friend who had no transport. I told him to make sure that he always locked her up and to take good care of her. Unfortunately he’d didn’t realise how special she was as ,although she was in daily serviceable use, she was not in concours condition. I knew nothing of the theft until he cheerfully appeared at my door one day with a brand new supermarket brand bicycle as a replacement for me explaining what had happened to the “rusty old bike” I had lent him. He couldn’t understand my sadness as he thought of this “Brand new Bike” as an upgrade!!!!. Please could you keep me in mind if you ever see one for sale that fits the provenance of mine. I suppose it’s a long shot but I have to ask if you sold the one you restored in this video. If you did maybe the owner would sell it on to me. To find another one would be great but as you and many of our fellow bicycle lovers will understand I will always grieve for my old girl. The things we went through, together and the kilometers that my then teenage son cut his road riding teeth on. From the Yorkshire Wolds and Moors to Southern Europes most iconic mountain roads she gave me nothing but pleasure. I will never forget her and live hopefully that one day we will be reunited.🙏
Thanks for watching Chris and also sharing your personal experience of your Raleigh Sirocco. Unfortunately yes this one some time ago. I’ll definitely keep my eyes open for another one though. Really enjoyed reading the story of yours. 😉 thanks again all the best
Ashamed to say I am old enough to have had one of these beauties when it was brand new. 1987, I was 14 years old. Christmas present £240 from a Raleigh bike shop. If sold today it would cost over £700. Unfortunately I scrapped it in the mid 90s after leaving it to rot in my attic for years. What a shame. Lovely looking classic bike with loads of character. Didn't think twice back then riding with toe clips but couldn't imagine using those contraptions today. Lovely restoration by the way.
Thanks again for watching and the support, I remember the Sirocco well and only dreamed of having one back then. My first Raleigh was the Team Cadet a few models below the Sirocco. Great memories I hope I brought back some great ones for you. All the best for 2021
Superb as new restoration Andy. I'm pleased that you restore your bikes to original or near as spec, keeping it character. I have a critical eye on restorations, including my own. I can't fault this lovely bike. Well done.
Thanks for the comment, I got a little excited when I saw the advert for this one, and i did pay slightly over what I would of liked. I knew it had been stood somewhere for a long time hardly used so didn't have to spend to much to bring it back. Thanks again and all the best, thanks for the on going support Andy
What a smashing bike you have here. I thought it was good to go before you even started but i am blown away by the end result. Amazing work polishing the groupset and repairing the seat. While the paint job makes the frame look ahead of its time it retains all the features that make these older bikes timeless classics.
Super job. I've got a raleigh eclipse i bought it from new in 1989 I was 15 years old and paid for it myself. I even found the original receipt for it recently for 215 pounds. Apart from a different rear wheel it's all original. its got 12speed sis,Reynolds 501 and pearl white paint. it was mega for its time. Great restoration mate. All the best from East anglia.
+Fursteve ferret Thanks for sharing about the Eclipse, fascinating about the exact cost. You've not done bad all them years of cycling and you probably haven't lost a penny on it. Thanks for watching and all the best Andy

Fantastic! What an outstanding restoration especially on the groupset, that rear derailuer wit 🙌😍 Total respect and admiration for your efforts so much behind the scenes researching and obtaining parts. Top notch 🏆

Great Job, I have the very same bike in great condition, with all original parts including pump and water bottle. Think I will have to strip it down and clean just the same.
Thoroughly enjoyed your video on the Raleigh Sirocco Road Bike Restoration. I recently got back into cycling (I'm an old guy) and acquired a Raleigh Pursuit 1986 vintage in very nice condition. I had it completely overhauled by a local bike shop that specializes in vintage bikes. I'm interested in what your experience may be with this model of Raleigh. Love your videos!!
Hello Bob and firstly thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Happy you’ve enjoyed watching. The Raleigh Pursuit came in black but I’m sure they also did a red model. Happy new year Andy and what a way to start it up with this beautiful restoration job, frame looks fantastic! 👍👍👌👌 it was well kept indeed but looks new after your rebuild congrats on another great restored bike and video 📹, all the best. @@BikeItUK brought back memories? It's made me buy one on eBay! It's arriving Thursday. Needs minimal restoration, a clean, repack bearings, cables, saddle, bar tape and a period correct bottle cage.
I remember the Raleigh Sirocco and they might have been individually built in the Raleigh Lightweight unit. In 1986 I bought a brand new Raleigh Granada Tourer and it had a Handbuilt in England transfer on the frame and a card with a photo and signature of the man who built it. Tragic the factory was demolished in 2002, the land sold to Nottingham University and their bikes are now badged and manufactured in Asia.
Mate I’m with you, going from such a world leader in bicycles to next to nothing. Think they concrete on electric ⚡️ bikes 🚲 now. So much heritage just gone. Thanks for watching and the comment all the very best Andy
Hi, please see my comment here. I don’t suppose you could have bought my stolen one could you? I would love to get her back if so? Please let me know what you think?
Well done great job 👍 I had a Sirocco in the late 80’s and did many 1000’s of miles on it.Changed most of the components to Campagnolo Victory,a red Roll’s saddle and had a set of Victory hubs built with Mavic GP4 rims and stainless steel spokes. Also fitted an early Vetta cycle computer great days indeed keep up the great work
Thanks for watching and your support! Sounds like you upgraded a lot on your Raleigh Sirocco must of been a sweet ride. Nice memories I’m sure. Thanks again and all the best Andy
Maybe, I own a GT and still ride it. I need to overhaul that one as its not been serviced for a good 15 years. I know the old School bikes so its not a bad idea. Watch this space. All the best Andy
Hello dear Andy....I had one raleigh panasonic flyer type 90,s version for restoration...I want the decal set and white pearl paint spray of this model...
Another superb upload, quick question... I have been looking at project bikes due to your uploads and seen (un-restored) bikes going for silly money and others going for buttons.... how do you decide what would make a good project bike, and do you set a spend limit for the bike?
Hmmm good question, I should write a small booklet on this. Firstly the size matters to a degree just because of the resale audience I feel the biggest group to selling to is a large 56cm or 23" old school. Then is about knowing a classic that many used to have as a kid, a lot of people are chasing that first bike they had although they may have a stunning new bike to ride, If something can take you back in time then that in my opinion is priceless! If a bike has many original parts then its just a matter of stripping cleaning polishing and rebuilding. If the bikes got a lot of odds and ends on, then relocating and buying the original parts to put back on can cost more than the bike is worth. I hope this helps out a little, I could go on and on about this subject. All the best and thanks for watching Andy
Thanks for watching and the support, I'm really not too sure I know it will take a 25 no problem. Id say you should be able to get away with it. Maybe just have to inflate the tyre once on the bike. Good luck
Nice bike, just to add that only the main frame tubes are 501 the rest being high tensile. I tend to be cautious using aggressive abrasives on forged aluminium parts as the outer layer is a compressed skin, and of course you can easily alter the appearance.
Hi I generally always just use eBay. Gum wall tyres I pay from £8 up-to £60 depending on the value of the bike. The bar tape in peal white is become very difficult to obtain and takes a lot of searching. Search vintage shiny handle bar tape for starters see which results it throws up in eBay. All the best and good luck 😉
+Chris Hodgson Hi Chris all the best and thanks for the comment, glad you like. The Raleigh Road Ace is one bike 🚴 I'd like to obtain and restore! I find the bikes from here there and everywhere. Some abandoned others EBay and some from the scrap man. I'm always on the look out! Watch this space for the Road Ace really do want one on the channel...all the best Andy
Hi Andy! Thanks for your great videos! I’d like to ask you about the Sirocco. Do you know the inner diameter of its head tube? Maybe it’s the same for all vintage Raleigh steel bikes. I’d like to change the headset on mine, but don’t know if I can use any modern ones at all. Best wishes from Hungary! Norbert
Hi all the Raleigh and other manufacturers of frames of this time period use a standard headset size. 22.2mm or 1” think 🤔 it is. Glad you enjoy the videos thanks for your support I hope this helps
Hello and all the best thanks for watching! I do have a Claud Butler 531 frame hanging up with fixed gear written all over it. I will get around to it promise. thanks Andy
Hi Pal, Thanks for the comment and all the best for 2017, ref the Tech ill get on it right now and check it out. Im always up for improvements....thanks buddy!
Hi pal, I will start with a metal polish however some spokes do need a little more so with wire wool or fine sandpaper. If the bike is of higher end then I may even strip and replace the spokes. Sometimes the wheels are in great condition so I think that you have already covered it they don't require anything at all. Thanks for watching all the best Andy
The bucket: so simple but great idea. I'm the idiot losing bits and hunting around in vain for days. Haha. Love the 80's retro synth. Do you do your own music?
Happy new year Andy, another great vid.Always look forward to your latest prijects.Ive got a question for you is only eBay you use to sell or have you other sites.I have at last finished my project or fully restoring my Raleigh Record Ace 1980 bike it is now absolutely looking great probably better than new and very proud of it.I cant ride any more having had a RTA so my cycling days are over but this bike is for a collector or a museum. Regards, roger
Hello Rodger, all the very best for 2017. Sorry to hear about your accident, I am a fire fighter full time so I come across the devastation they cause, I glad you enjoy restoring the bike though. What a classic you have there. i do only use eBay just simply because its a fast sale and I need to turn it around to move onto my next project. Only problem being is the fees, Id say if you don't need to sell it fast Facebook has a few road bike pages to sell on for free, however on the down side I have found I have been hounded with questions and no Sale. I suppose with Ebay if it doesn't sell you don't pay so maybe but a bigger price tag on and offer nearest offer. Good Photographs are key, showcase as much as possible I think you are allowed 12 shots so plenty for showing the quality off and the running gear. Good luck and thanks again Andy
Very impressive! I watched your videos to give me the knowhow and motivation to restore a Vintage Raleigh Sirocco Claret coloured c1986. I notice on your bake you had the Weinmann single pivot brake calipers. I have the same/ similar: Weinmann single pivot side pull brake Calipers type 500. I'm having issues centering them - tired finger tight for fixing and lock nuts, bending the spring, etc, but still not perfectly centered . Any top tips?
+Andy Griffin Hi Andy, thanks for tuning in and watching! To be honest with you whenever I have had this problem it has just been because the calliper was on too tight. One other reason is that the spring may of been damaged and has become off centred. I hope this helps all the best Andy
Hi I generally always keep searching eBay however I’ve searched recently and only found one weinman matching calliper. Just keep scrolling they will come up 👍🚲😉all the best and good luck Andy
Hi, great videos BTW! What gumwall tyres do you normally put back on? I am picking up an Raleigh Ventura from the same year as this so need to source some new tyres etc...
Mate, honestly I had you in my thoughts all the way through this project I knew you had one yourself and loved it dearly! Ill check the photos out. I hope that you have had a good one, all the very best for 2017. Andy
I keep a list and generally always sell the bike for a small profit, a link for the Sale of the bike on Ebay can be found in the comments when I upload any new video. To be honest I make more money from the spin off of the videos through Google etc. I have been on TH-cam for many years now and the main reason for these videos is to inspire others and to document a little history and the bike itself. thanks for watching and all the best Andy
+Ysoxis V I'm writing a bit about that at the moment, watch this space. It's here there and everywhere. eBay and such sites the scrap man, friends all sorts. Thanks for watching Andy
Can I ask where you get the gloves you wear when carrying out a restoration, are they surgical gloves? I've tried a few types but they usually tear after while and I end up gloveless and greasy hands, enjoying the vids by the way.
I love your content. New subscriber. I would also ask you, if you can make a video about yourself, how did you end up restaurating bikes etc. Also where do you sell them or is it just a personal collection? Cheers mate
+Margarit Margaritov well, firstly thanks for subscribing! The sell 99% of the bikes I restore, however a couple so far has been added to my collection. A video I did called Bikes Tools and Cycling Heros runs through my personal collection. As for a video on a little bit about myself I promise to add it to my list. 👍thanks again Andy
BBBBeautiful!! Brilliant job on the restoration. If I had enough money, I would swipe that beast asap 😂 I thought you were never going to upload this video since you hinted it on your instagram post ^^ anyways, keep up the hard work!!
Thanks pal for the comment, yes its such a good example. I was debating not selling it as it matches the Raleigh Corsa I have, and I know I say I you can never have enough bikes, but its getting mad in there and I generally use the money to produce the next restoration. Glad to see we are connected on Instagram all the very best for 2017 and thanks again for all the support! Andy
I love your videos but I wish you would do a more detailed video that teaches novice mechanics how to fix their own bikes. Along the lines of Wheeler Dealers maybe?
Two spring to mind the obvious one is the Colnago but the other is the Peugeot one which was caked in bright green paint. It didn’t cost much and it was a mega transformation. Thanks for the question I should do a video on some of these questions I’m thinking 🤔 all the best Andy
Hiya Andy I have the same bike as you here in need off some tlc do you restore these bikes for a living if you fancy a challenge I have my father's I'm wanting bringing back to life I would obviously pay you for your time etc is there a way to get hold off you mine has very nice lug work and French made is there a way to get in touch with you maybe send you some pictures over and see what you think.
It's an '86 Sirocco, I'm sure. I have an identical bike to this !! It was a sod to get hold of the skinny white-wall tyres but that's what the '86 brochure shows ! www.flickr.com/photos/54329998@N00/6853876093/in/album-72157603841116851/ I also have an '84/'85 Sirocco, which is all in red.
Thanks for sharing, I managed to obtain a like new identical brochure you have images of, which I have now framed and hangs with my Raleigh Corsa. Great BMX by the way, thanks again and all the best for 2017. Andy
BikeIt UK Haha, cheers !! I never owned a BMX in the '80s, so set about getting one as I wanted it. It's a Chrome Burner frame, sprayed with Team colours on the front. it's not perfect but I like it. (the front blue is colour matched to my Panasonic Team Rep. roadie but the blue on the rear transfer has a different shade of blue).
I do not know, I'm sure there will will certain brands in Europe go for a lot more here, I know in italy you can get some classics cheap. I have often thought about hiring a big van and load it up at some Flea Market. Maybe we should team up and ill ship them over. All the very best Andy
You keep using way too much cabling for the rear brake, it should not flare up like that, nor should it do likewise for a vintage derailleur, you can lose 1-3" on each cable to be period correct, and to shift & brake better.

I'd like to see you do an MTB, something classic like a Muddy Fox Courier. Great video, love seeing the Raleigh bikes.
Maybe, I own a GT and still ride it. I need to overhaul that one as its not been serviced for a good 15 years. I know the old School bikes so its not a bad idea. Watch this space. All the best Andy
Can you make a video showing how your restore/refurbish the wheels please?
+DavidUKesb David I’ll add it to the list. Thanks for watching Andy
Excelente como siempre feliz año
Gracias por el comentario y Feliz Año Nuevo a usted también Andy
Hello dear Andy....I had one raleigh panasonic flyer type 90,s version for restoration...I want the decal set and white pearl paint spray of this model...
Hello again, yes try H Loyds decals I think they are called 👍
Hi Andy, lovely restoration. Will the Sirocco take a 28c tyre, something a bit chunkier for road and firm trails?
Thanks for watching and the support, I'm really not too sure I know it will take a 25 no problem. Id say you should be able to get away with it. Maybe just have to inflate the tyre once on the bike. Good luck
Nice bike, just to add that only the main frame tubes are 501 the rest being high tensile. I tend to be cautious using aggressive abrasives on forged aluminium parts as the outer layer is a compressed skin, and of course you can easily alter the appearance.
Thanks for the knowledge and sharing, interesting 👍all the best Andy
Hello can you tell me where you get the gum wall types and the bar tape to match this bike as I am looking to restore similar
All the best and good luck 😉
i has already buy use rayleigh sirocco 501 and wow!
Great video! I have the same bike! What tape did you use for the handlebars?
Thanks for watching, the tape is Benotto pearl white handlebar tape. Hope this helps
HI How do you match the paint colours?
Thanks for watching I generally take the forks or frame with me when buying the paint. Hope this helps
Is that Bramhall Park you are pottering around...?
+Anthony Mccloskey 😂sssh sure is! Andy
Great video and great bikes. I had a Raleigh Road Ace and wish I had not sold it. It was from the same time as your bike. Where do you find the bikes?
+Chris Hodgson Hi Chris all the best and thanks for the comment, glad you like. The Raleigh Road Ace is one bike 🚴 I'd like to obtain and restore! I find the bikes from here there and everywhere. Some abandoned others EBay and some from the scrap man. I'm always on the look out! Watch this space for the Road Ace really do want one on the channel...all the best Andy
Thanks Andy look forward to that one. All the best.
Glad you enjoy the videos thanks for your support I hope this helps
can you do another singlespeed sometime soon?
Hello and all the best thanks for watching! I do have a Claud Butler 531 frame hanging up with fixed gear written all over it. I will get around to it promise. thanks Andy
always enjoy your videos mate, have you thought of getting a gimbal stabilizer for the selfie stick?
Hi Pal, Thanks for the comment and all the best for 2017, ref the Tech ill get on it right now and check it out. Im always up for improvements....thanks buddy!
very nice video :)
+Anwar Liensky thanks for watching 👍
Hello mate, great vid! Can you tell me how do you clean rims and spokes, do you use sandpaper or just a metal polisher or do you use anything at all?
Hi pal, I will start with a metal polish however some spokes do need a little more so with wire wool or fine sandpaper. If the bike is of higher end then I may even strip and replace the spokes. Sometimes the wheels are in great condition so I think that you have already covered it they don't require anything at all. Thanks for watching all the best Andy
BikeIt UK I have some 70's Legnano going to restore and wheels are not so good. Thanks for the answer Andy!
All the best to you too. Mladen.
Are the bottom brackets on a raleigh...British threads??
Yes they are hope this helps
The bucket: so simple but great idea. I'm the idiot losing bits and hunting around in vain for days. Haha. Love the 80's retro synth. Do you do your own music?
+Mason Hancock thanks and I hope the bucket helps you out 👍the music is from TH-cam creator studio. All the best Andy
Many thanks - I'll have a play :-)
What could be the fair price for such a beautiful bike?
The Raleigh Siroccos bring anything from £150 to £275 approx depending on condition and originality.
I'm having trouble finding the parts (caliper)for this beautiful bike anyone know where to get some in the UK that is.
After T-Cut, do you wax the paint?
no the T-cut does not remove the top coat. i hope this helps thanks for watching
Love the videos mate but could you add the price you brought the bike, how many hours you spend on it and how much you sell it for :)
I have been on TH-cam for many years now and the main reason for these videos is to inspire others and to document a little history and the bike itself. thanks for watching and all the best Andy
how and where can we get these bikes like you
+Ysoxis V I'm writing a bit about that at the moment, watch this space. It's here there and everywhere. eBay and such sites the scrap man, friends all sorts. Thanks for watching Andy
I like it
🙏👍
6:02 No pedal on the non-drive side? :P
+louiscormier12 well spotted just while the bike was on the stand. It catches on the post. Thanks for tuning in and watching, all the best Andy
Makes sense. Love your work!
good video for new year happy everybody New 2017 year....
Happy New Year buddy and thanks for the comment! Andy
how much worth rayleigh sircco 501? let me know
The Raleigh Sirocco Road Bike sold for £175 I think 🤔 all the best Andy
@@BikeItUK sold someone person?
Can I ask where you get the gloves you wear when carrying out a restoration, are they surgical gloves? I've tried a few types but they usually tear after while and I end up gloveless and greasy hands, enjoying the vids by the way.
Hi and thanks for the supporting comment. Regarding the gloves 🧤 just search Blue Surgical Gloves on eBay 👍 hope that this helps Andy
BikeIt UK Hi , Thanks, I should have thought of that, there seem to be so many types to choose from, I'll just take pot luck,
I love your content.
👍thanks again Andy
i was replace clear up like here...many thank:-)
BBBBeautiful!! Brilliant job on the restoration. If I had enough money, I would swipe that beast asap 😂
I thought you were never going to upload this video since you hinted it on your instagram post ^^
anyways, keep up the hard work!!
Andy
Hi Andy,
What tools do you use to take the bike apart?
Thanks
Xx1SAGE Many to list I need to do a video just on this subject.Watch this space andy
I love your videos but I wish you would do a more detailed video that teaches novice mechanics how to fix their own bikes. Along the lines of Wheeler Dealers maybe?
+Vinayak Rao thanks for your comment, they are coming promise! Watch this space 👍 Andy
i have sold rayleigh sirocco 501 today.
Thanks for watching
Love on Wheels
+Coopoli Restorations thanks for the comment and watching Andy
Bought a scirocco in 1986. Part exed my pulsar for it
Both great Raleigh's 👍
Of all the bikes you've rehabed, which were you most proud of?
Two spring to mind the obvious one is the Colnago but the other is the Peugeot one which was caked in bright green paint. It didn’t cost much and it was a mega transformation. Thanks for the question I should do a video on some of these questions I’m thinking 🤔 all the best Andy
My scirocco was all candy apple red 🤔
Yes yours was the earlier model, Raleigh just did a colour change but kept everything the same regarding running gear. 👍
@BikeIt UK late 1984/early 1985 if I remember correctly 👍🏽

I hope it brought back some great childhood memories thanks for watching and your support
i try relist ebay more rayleigh sircooc 501
It's an '86 Sirocco, I'm sure. I have an identical bike to this !!
It was a sod to get hold of the skinny white-wall tyres but that's what the '86 brochure shows !
www.flickr.com/photos/54329998@N00/6853876093/in/album-72157603841116851/
I also have an '84/'85 Sirocco, which is all in red.
Thanks for sharing, I managed to obtain a like new identical brochure you have images of, which I have now framed and hangs with my Raleigh Corsa. Great BMX by the way, thanks again and all the best for 2017. Andy
BikeIt UK
Haha, cheers !!
Great looking bike, i am after a classic just fancy using one for popping around to the corner shop. Very cool bike. Nice one
why are vintage roadbikes that cheap in the uk? Over here in Germany people would take 500~600€ for a bike in such good condition.
+Donald Gillies thanks for the advice, I just used the Original cable that I keep to duplicate the length. Thanks for the advice Andy
