Venezuela's Luxury Market For The Rich 🇻🇪

  • In Margarita exist the biggest supermarket I've seen in Venezuela and with the most imported products. 4-6 years ago Venezuela faced its biggest food crisis and over 5 million fled the country. Nowadays you can find any food product and also some imported goods but it will cost you a lot of money. The current minimum wage is at about $30 USD a month which is about a 300% increase from when I arrived in the country a few months ago. Basically only a select few can afford to shop here except for when it come to alcohol which is extremely cheap in the Venezuelan island which has no tax on alcohol.

These American products are identical American products that "normal" not "rich" grocery stores would have, here in Mexico. I'm starting to think theres an American company who imports these American products down to Venezuela, black market style. Even Zucaritas are from Mexico, but an American company (Kellogs) produces them.

I am confused.. If you pay in dollars at stores, how are people getting dollars? How are people getting dollars?

That's a very complex question to answer hahahahaha. It depends, each person has ways to get the dollars.
On one hand, there's a black market that brings dollars in cash from Venezuela's border with Colombia. Cash can also come from banks that sell in smaller fractions.
Supermarkets in Venezuela accept various forms of payment, including Zelle, Cryptos and even Paypal. Venezuela has a long history of commercial life with the United States, so it's normal for many Venezuelans and businesses to have bank accounts in the United States.

I'll explain...due to the sanctions against officials of the dictatorship and the fact that they have been roaming the Venezuelan people for decades, it is impossible for them to continue laundering money in the same way they used to...now one of the ways to launder money is to do it run in the street... because the dictatorship doesn't give you a single dollar through the correct and legal channels.... that's why there are countless office buildings that are being built, but despite being finished for years, they remain empty... Nobody rents them... and these works are paid to contractors in dollars in cash... as well as many other services... in short, it's money, those dollars are the product of crime, corruption and robbery in Venezuela... not to mention drug trafficking gold, gasoline and food that is also paid in dollars in cash... all the money... all the dollars that are circulating in Venezuela are the proceeds of crime... the robbery of a nation by criminals to whom everything has been closed option to legitimize or wash r that money
