People!
By Jud Cost
One of the last great '60s bands hailing from the San Jose area, People followed in the homegrown tradition of such fabled South Bay combos as the Syndicate of Sound, Count Five, Chocolate Watchband, Mourning Reign and the E-Types.
Mikel Hunter Herrington, the legendary KLIV disc jockey known as Captain Mikey and the man who helped break the Syndicate of Sound's national smash "Little Girl" in 1966, agreed to manage People if they found a new lead singer. When high school pals Larry Norman and Gene Mason both sounded outstanding at an audition, Hunter suggested the band use both as frontmen. The rest of the classic People lineup would include guitarist Geoff Levin, Albert Ribisi on keyboards, bassist Robb Levin and drummer Denny Fridkin. Everybody agreed the name People-in contrast to the common practice of the day of anthropomorphic band names (Beatles, Animals, Byrds, Doors)-was a winner.
Produced by Captain Mikey, People's "I Love You" single vaulted into Billboard's Top 20 by the spring of 1968, then circled the globe as a chart-topper wherever it was released. Of course, "I Love You," originally a 1965 B-side by British pop maestros the Zombies, is a knockout. Penned by Chris White, bass player of the St. Alban's combo, the song, as were most Zombies melodies, is a minor-key gem, and it still resonates heavily today with Summer of Love vibrations.
But anyone who thinks People were just a vehicle for little-known Zombies songs should have a listen to I Love You, the San Jose outfit's first album. One of their debut LP's more remarkable tracks is Denny Fridkin's "Crying Shoes," which incorporates the familiar strains of Edward Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance" march into a tune whose bridge is right out of the Absolutely Free album by Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention.
And, not to be missed is "The Epic," a sprawling work-often compared to the Who's rock opera Tommy-that occupies the entire second side of People's debut longplayer. In reality, "The Epic," which features some dialogue in Spanish, wields a lighter touch than Tommy, more in the vein of an earlier extended work by the Who, "A Quick One While He's Away."
A full understanding of People also requires total immersion in Both Sides Of People, the band's second Capitol LP, cut in an era where albums not singles had the power to make or break an artist. Norman had left the band upon the 1968 release of their first album, reportedly because the record's name had been changed by the label from What We Need Is A Lot More Jesus And A Lot Less Rock 'n' Roll to what Capitol deemed a safer title: I Love You.
Although Larry Norman was gone, three of his tunes-in particular the brilliant, Small Faces-like "I've Got You On My Mind"-grace People's sophomore effort as testament to his songwriting prowess. But People soldiered on with Gene Mason now singing lead full-time, opening large concerts for the likes of the Doors, Janis Joplin and the Byrds. People had proved they belonged on the national stage, and they took full advantage of the opportunity.
Larry, you are greatly missed. Those that knew you are still heart broken. I know you're singing and worshiping before God's throne. ❤️
It was a miracle to get these boy's back on stage together , 37 yrs ago was their last gig, two of them had not even spoken. As a kid I used to see them perform in the late 60's ,never imagining I would ever get to know them or play music with some of them.
This was only months before Larry passed on to be with our LORD!
Thanks for sharing!
Oh my gosh, so sad and sorry to hear this.
I saw Larry sing and give his testimony at church a few days later. Afterwards, I learned he had gone blind
God bless you Larry you're my friend in heaven God bless you want to heaven 2022 we all miss you God bless
These guys played at our amusement park in 1969 (Hansons Park-Harveys Lake, Pa ) - they spent the whole weekend with us on the lake boating - I have a post card from Larry telling me that they are opening for the Rolling Stones & have many pictures - THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES
The People!! OMG!! I used to love this song in the 60's. I have remembered the lyrics all these years. To find it on here is a huge blessing. 😃
Amazing that those guys could still sing in the original key 40 years later.
Not bad...
I was 14 when my boyfriend gave me this on a 45 record. He was my first true love. This brings back sweet memories.
That was excellent! Almost 40 years later and their song still sound a lot like the original.
I seen them in Santa Cruz on the beach when they first did this song. I guess you remember Harper's Bazaar ? I met all of them and became pretty good friends, I was 13 then. Ted templemen became a successful producer. good for him.
uh..no
Hate to break it to you but it's not their song it's originally by The Zombies
And quite frankly it's better
always remember this song I Like it to this day 2023 God bless
Gene Mason is one of the most talented, gifted, and classy singers, songwriter and guitar players I've ever known. He sings and plays solidly. Those musicians who have worked with him 'never forget his amazing musical talent. He sings and plays from the' heart and it leaves us a lasting and somehow haunting memory of his great music . BayAreaRocks, thanks for posting this - and, 'Gene thank you for your music ' (Eastern Laredo and *People)
Was around 14 when this came out....lots of good music back then....In 1972 or 73 I saw Larry Norman touring supporting his "Only Visiting this Planet" album. I knew the guys bringing him in, and stood within 10 ft. of him. He was the real thing for sure, as far as his musical ability. Have played his tune "The Outlaw" many times over the years, usually at a spiritually focused event.
In 1968 this was so unique. They played it more than the Beatles in my town. Got to give then one hit wonder status at the least.
그래 68년도엿찌!! 그립다!
I was 12 years when i heard this song it suited me well cos i liked a girl that never knew that i liked her cos my words never came out i am 61 and and never saw my girl again the song really bring sweet memories
ME TOO.
I have always loved this song from the very first time i heard it. It was the song that was playing the last time i saw my brother the night before he took his life. He heard it too and asked me to turn it down as i was leaving the campground. I know he knew how much i loved him. Steven and Larry thank you for your contributions to my life. Rest in peace. I love you.
UP THERE WITH MY TEN COOLEST SONGS OF ALL TIME.....I LOVE YOU PEOPLE.....
On this day in 1968 {June 8th} People performed "I Love You"* on ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'...
At the time 'I Love You" was at position #22 on Billboard's Top 100 chart, two weeks later it would peak at #14 {for 1 week} and it spent eighteen weeks on the Top 100...
"I Love You" was the group's only Top 100 record...
* And from the 'For What It's Worth' department, in 1968 there were three other "I Love You" records on the Top 100, "La-La Means I Love You" by The Delfonics {reached #4}, "Hello, I Love You" by The Doors {peaked at #1 for 2 weeks}, and "I Love You Madly" by The Fantastic Four {reached #56}...
Great song. I always loved the guitar part and here, it was spot on! This really took me back to age 11 - 12 in 1968, Phoenix,AZ.
I like this song I remember this song I'm still here in the 2024 I never get tired of hearing❤❤❤😅😊😊😊
It’s cool to see People! do this live!
Sensacionale
My all time favorite song:) Great to see this cool live version! They still got it! perfect!
You still have it too, like you just came to left a beach in San Diego or somewhere by the ocean. (Politely). :)
Glad Larry Norman did this with People.
I met the band when Tommy Tucker was playing with them, he was the nephew of my mother's best friend and I was a little kid sitting in her living room when various guys would pop in from different parts of the house. They were great! Giovanni Ribisi's father was in the band too Albert Ribisi. I have their album with this wonderful song on it.
Thanks for all the memories - Larry Norman - R I P there must be a hell of a band playing in the next life
I bought the 45 when I was a kid in '68. At first I thought it had the wrong label or something because the intro wasn't on the radio. Some of the vocals were edited differently on the radio. Around a decade later, I got the album. It has the song with the same arrangement as the single, but with real heavy reverb. Another decade went by and I saw Larry Norman at the House Of Joy in Denver. He had a cassette of the early stuff and it has the radio edit. Finally after all those years! I love all three versions, it's just a great song. The flip side is super cool too. Larry Norman is the inventor of Christian rock. Randy Stonehill was around that time period too.
I saw The People play in a teen night club in northern lower Michigan way back when (1969?), called the Club Ponytail just outside of Petoskey and Harbor Springs. Love this song. Great job after all these years! 👍🏻
this spooky song, stayed with me always.... I LOVE IT. TO BAD WE COULDN''T MORE OF THEM. But, thanks for the memories. LARRY NORMAN R.I.P
+Mike Kaplan I haven't heard this song in years, but I remember listening to it alot in the 60's. They were hugely popular in San Jose, obviously. We were proud of them.
Zombies did it originally. Jus found that ouy
+Mike Kaplan I just found out too. I had no idea this was a Zombies song. I always loved it.
yes.
@@mikekaplan7078 The Zombies still do it and better
this is too cool, these guys after half a century still performing 🙂👍
Gave me chills..I loved this song
Still have my original 45 and love this song as much today as then!
so funny. I was dating the drummer when Larry was in The People. I think his name was Denny. What a long time ago...1968 was a great year.
Great job. Good seeing People again!
One of my favorite songs of the 60s, such a great decade of music.
After gaining success, most of the band members -- except Larry Norman and Gene Mason -- accepted Scientology. Larry and Gene dropped out and People struggled to continue, but eventually broke up. It's nice to know entire band made ammends before Larry passed on Feb. 24, 2008.
I didn't know that this was a Zombies original that was became a hit by the People in the states. I have this 45. Thanks for sharing ...
The Zombies still do it and better
That was awesome !..You know when a song gets stuck in your mind and you haven,t heard it in a long time...well, these guys just sent me chills ...Like I was sent back into time !!!
wow 1 of favs way back , it meant a lot to me , u know
I lived in Milpitas , Senior year. Great memories.

So so cool!!! I love you guys for this Best version of this song!! Thanks RIP
Loved this song ;)
我非常喜歡的歌,幾十年了仍喜歡。from Hong Kong
¡WOW!... Sigue sonando bien... Y luego de escuchar esto regreso de un viaje en el tiempo... Gracias por compartir...
Uma das melhores músicas que já ouvi, lembro-me bem do ano de 1968 ela estava no auge, pena que hoje não temos músicas como esta, abraços
Such a haunting song
love you Larry Norman
Bay... You done me well....I stayed in The Bay Area....Before and after NAM 71'....Thanks...Larry is The GrandPapa....I'm 2 years younger
One of the greatest songs of the 60s. Always cherished it. Also it was longer than most, which intrigued me. Top 40 that is.
Very unique song...excellent.
Larry's great, but that other lead singer is pretty special as well. I can't thank all of them enough for creating what I think is one of the best recordings of the 60's.
In 1967-8 I lived in a hippie house on 3rd Ave in San Jose with Albert Ribisi in the room across from me. So many stories--Jerry Garcia talking with Peter Grant on the side yard, the almost big bust when the cops came in because of a complaint about Peter's loud playing and Sue's quiet knitting... Anyway, Al was a wonderful guy and I was a new prof at SJ State.
Es una melodía hermosa por su letra y la música, Gracias por compartirla y los buenos comentarios con los más bellos recuerdos
GREAT !! THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!
I love you. ❤️
I saw them at the Santa Clara county fairgrounds in 1968. At that performance they included in their set the Beatles "I Am the Walrus". It was fantastic. Anybody else out there remember that.
A great song that has stood the test of time. It didn't become a hit for the Zombies but it did for People. Here they did a fine performance of this great song. It still sounds like the way it was done back in the 60's. It's great to hear they hadn't lost their sound.
Before the next wave of this talent arrives...we'll all be dead! Hello Fremont! (:
good rock band God bless all from Portland California
thanks larry norman for the great memories
Great performance Larry - Love You Roni K
Adoro está canción, me trae momentos bonitos,de esa época.
Wonderful, thanks :)
I love you Dave 💞
THE GREAT AND AMAZING SONG.
Por siempre PEOPLE I Love You
I HAVE THE ORIGINAL 45 SINGLE FROM WHEN THEY PLAYED WASTEMONT HIGH SCHOOL IN 1970 !!!
I Knew this Band when they Played 'The Galaxy on Broadway..
North Beach San Francisco..in the 1960's..~Girl George ~
They came to the Tracy Ballroom in the late 60s. I was already heavily into music at the age of 15. I was impressed with them. I remember they also did (I believe) I am a Walrus by the Beatles.
This is the song that my first serious boyfriend picked as, “ours.”❤
I remember my brother playing at the station where he was a dicjocky at a radio station In Austin tx
fell in love with Monica A. I was only 10 years old. Still haunts me-in a good way.
Hello Denny!
The guy still has his upper register after a half-century, and that's the first thing to go in a vocalist. They even played in the same key instead of dropping it a full note to make it easier on the vocal cords.
Larry was really ill at this point. Still had a great voice though.
Christopher Taylor White wrote the song with Zombies group.
カーナビーツ😅好きさ好きさお前のすべてー❤❤❤🎉
If The Zombies can come back from the dead to do this song live, so can People!
And what melody comes on the "B" side, because I remember that it was a piece called "Think" and I couldn't find it anywhere. Thank you
I know this sounds so weird, but I was looking for the B side to the single of this song. It was titled "Somebody Tell Me My Name."
And I want to say that this modern performance of this song is flawless. That surprised me, considering how high those notes are.
Even though Larry Norman gets all the attention for his talent---check out that other singer from People! That dude's heart is totally in the music! And he probably hasn't performed all that much in recent years compared to Larry! Larry looks like he's just going through the motions here--and it used to be the other way around. He was the singer in People that had all the charisma
LARRY R.I.P
this was first and foremost a Zombies song - yes, i'm from the 60's
I'm from the 60's too, had this 45 back then by the People. The Zombies sounded similar but this is defiantly The People's song.
I love The Zombies big time but this version is the best!! Thanks again dudes.
I like their version better than the original
I like this version better than the zombies version.
@@jsaw200 The Zombies do it much better even today
I love this cover but i prefer the original of The Zombies.
That looks like Governor Holcomb. Didn't know you had a moonlighting gig😅
Original version is from The Zombies 1966
How many of these guys were on the record? I know Larry and Gene were.
This was hilarious.
Are they the all original members?
Zombies song..theirs was a cover.
I want to think they are not using and never used drugs.
How many secular people no the guy with long white hair became the father big Christian rock yuo hate so much
Scientology screwed up so many lives.
Not a good record to give a chick you aint, serious about....Whoa! hey that's just the name of the song, ________ (insert her name)
My ex was in this band but got kicked out when he left Scientology
What? Were they Scientologists?
@@alricthered226 Some were. One reason Larry moved on.
They ripped off the Zombies. It’s there song.
There's a big difference between ripping off a song and simply doing a cover version. There have been hundreds of cover versions of a particular song that became the hit version of the song. Even the Beatles did many cover versions that were big hits like Roll Over Beethoven and Twist & Shout for examples. If a group does a cover version better than the original and they get a hit with it then that basically becomes their song. Paul Anka wrote the song My Way but is there anyone on the planet who doesn't consider that as Frank Sinatra's song?
@@3Ddude101 If what valuman1 says is correct than i guess Jimi Hendrix "Ripped Off" Bob Dylan with (All Along The Watch Tower)
@@kennethbrown2089 Great version, but even Dylan doesn't realize his haunting original version is still the best.
