And we have for instance in Poland a Catholic priest - MichaÅ Heller - who is a professor of physics. He is also a philosopher, a member of many international scientific societies, doctor honoris causa of many universities and author of many academic publications. He wrote also interesting books about the relation between faith and science. So science and faith don't have to be in opposition at all (after all, many renowned scientists believe in God). And there are, and always will be, so huge limits of human perception, so of science too (despite all the continous developments; when some scientific questions are answered, at once many new further appear).

I come back to Pope. When he died I was in hospital and everyone been crying I couldnât cry even I wanted to. I had then 14 years old. Year later I had a surgery and days before I had a dream he came and take me from broken glasses around it was painful but I feel relief. And so on and so on of hard to explain situationsâĶeveryone have different path and situations in life and I believe Jesus come in different ways to us âĪ

Even Blaise Pascal, as a scientist, was writing that if You believe and God doesn't exist, You lose much less than if the situation is the opposite - so if You don't believe but God really exists. And about the limits of human perception, only self-aware, really wise people are able to admit how much they still don't know, and will never know in their lifetime. It's like the famous saying of philosophers (said to be of Socrates): I know that I don't know nothing (Scio me nihil scire). While only ignorant people tend to say they know everything. As human beings, we will never know everything, only a small limited part (so the margin of scientific knowledge, despite all the developments, is limited; it's definitely not all).

In the past this song was popular and sang mainly by young people who were the members of the "Light - Life" movement, also called the "Oasis" - a religious renewal movement, within the Catholic Church, established by Priest Franciszek Blachnicki. This priest is very well known in Poland. He was born in 1921 in Upper Silesia (in Rybnik) and died, actually he was poisoned by communist agents, in 1987 in the West Germany (in Carlsberg, Bad DÞrkheim). His beatification process was opened in 1990s and is going on (he probably will be beatified). He went through a lot during his life. During the WW II he was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to Auschwitz and to other concentration camps. Later he was transferred again to prison in Katowice, for further investigation, and was even sentenced to death by the Nazists (he was supposed to be beheaded on a guillotine that was used during the WW II by Germans in Katowice for killing Poles, including priests - this guillotine can be seen in a museum nowadays). Fortunately, they finally didn't manage to conduct the execution. In 1981 he went to Rome, and couldn't come back to Poland, because the martial law was established. So he stayed in West Germany, in Carlsberg, where he settled in a Polish center known as "Marianum". He campaigned there for the liberation of Poland and other nations from communism. He was an enemy of the communist regimes. Before his death he was under close surveillance of the communist security services, who sent a couple of agents with the aim of gaining his trust, to write reports about him and later to murder him (he was killed by poisoning). By the way, in that times the communists murdered brutally in Poland much more Catholic priests, because they were opposing to the communists and were doing much to strenghten the people. There was a special department within the communist secret services titled "The Departament of Fight with Religion and Church". The most well known and tragic was death of Priest Jerzy PopieÅuszko (it's known by everyone in Poland), who in 1984 was kidnapped by the communists, brutally tortured, murdered and his body was thrown to the Vistula river. But there were more Polish priests murdered like that by the communists, the last of them in 1989.

Actually, this song is well known not only in Poland, but also in many other countries. In English speaking countries it's known under the title "Lord, have You come to the lake shore". It was a favourite song of Karol WojtyÅa - John Paul II, which he sang together with people, also during his first pilgrimage to Poland in 1979, which was very important for Polish people then, because Poland and Polish were suffering under the communist regime in that times and the Pope gave them much hope. During his pontificate he did much, also within the Vatican diplomacy and plenty of meetings with politicians (like the US President Ronald Reagan and his administration), to make the communism fall.

Yeah, he just does not know our JP, so that's ok.
In short, JPII is like that: for the older generation he is a very important person, the first Polish Pope, he fought against communism, he was a symbol of freedom and all that. Then, when he died, he was declared a saint and his cult grew even more.
The younger generation feels that pope was everywhere, you couldn't say a bad word about him, his monuments were erected in every city and your grandmother had several portraits of him at home, etc. You open a frigde and there's JP2 inside and I'm not even joking.
So younger people started to meme him into oblivion. In these memes he is usually portrayed as a soviet agent, mass murderer and paedophile, which drives old grannies crazy. When someone notices that it's 21.37pm (the time of his death) they start singing Barka (ironicaly).

Karol WojtyÅa is still important, and will be, for many people, in all generations, and not only in Poland. So it's not true. And in such memes only those are interested who are easily susceptible to manipulation in Internet. John Paul II did much for Poland, and it's definitely not only about religion. He was one of the people of that times that did very much to help in liberation of people from communism. And he is respected much for that in many countries.

Well, and to make things less glamorous, Father Gabarain author of Barka, honorary chaplain to Pope John Paul II was accused of pedophilia in the 1970s. Either our pope had a special misfortune in choosing his associates, or it's not some fate but an ordinary thing in such an environment. And he would rather have had to count on luck, or perhaps a miracle to hit on a normal one.
Like all the societies, and every organisation, group or movement within the society, consisting of human beings - the people, from which Church consists, us as well as priests themselves, are for sure not ideal. Church consists of people, and also priests, monks and nuns are just people. Among them, like in the society, there are good, bad, and even sometimes very bad ones. Only few of them are saints, for sure not all. So there are many problems, that's of course true. And pedophilia or other cases of sexual abuse, these are for sure not a problem only within the Catholic Church, but it's much wider issue. There are also among many other environments within the society where it's a problem, like e.g. among some other public figures, artists, in sports (like sport clubs), even within families. But of course, it should be solved and those who indeed committed such acts should be punished, also by the criminal law if it's proven. But we look at this from todays perspective, when the world is more open and there's public discussion about it. In the past it just looked different. And for sure, such perpetrators could hide much easier in the past. It's just not true that Pope tolerated this. Actually, he was the first who started to introduce changes within Church to be able to fight with this. For instance, he changed in the 1980s the Code of Canon Law, also the Cathehism, introducing explicit provisions condemning it as one of the worst sins, and he introduced other changes. During his pontificate the Vatican became a party to the international Convention about protection of a child's rights. He wrote many letters condemning it. But he just couldn't during his pontificate solve everything alone, at once. It's a problem that needs continous work and efforts, to be eradicated or at least minimalized as much as possible. So, to sum up, I do respect Karol WojtyÅa - John Paul II a lot, because he did much good during his life, also to start the necessary changes within the Church. And generally I go to church for God, not priests, who, as I'm aware, are just people, and there of course are good among them, but also some of them may be bad people. By the way, in some other religions there's allowed for an adult, often old men, to marry girls being still children, or do many other horrible things to them (and they bring such customs also to Europe, although they consistute a violation of fundamental human rights values), and it seems like it's not a big deal for many Western societies, accepting such practices that should also be prohibited and condemned. But only the Catholic Church is condemned like this. The rest is pretended not to be seen.
