Poland is never on the list to visit in Europe and is always an underrated destination; I heard it at least1000 times ! people are still thinking that there is no electricity and no cars in Poland, and prefer to amass under the Eiffel Tower or in the Ramblas. Keep on going there, so that interested people will keeping on profiting of this incredible country !

When in Gdańsk you should visit KL Stuthoff. Very close to Gdańsk. Light the candle.

Tap water is absolutely safe to drink in Warsaw (also uncooked). Analyses have demonstrated that now it's even healthier than many bottled waters. Your friend's opinion on this is based on communist-era memories. At that time avoiding drinking uncooked tap water was reasonable, because the water supply system was obsolete. But communism in Poland ended 35 years ago. Today's Warsaw's water supplies are modern, effective and safe.

The old town was not rebuilt based on historical documents but based on paintings by an Italian painter. At that time we were occupied by the Russians and there was no access to Western films or photos of Warsaw, and all the documents of Warsaw were destroyed because Warsaw was almost completely destroyed except for the Praga district (where the Russians stood and watched as the Germans destroyed Warsaw and murdered the Varsovians - the uprisings of Warsaw). Unfortunately, Stalin later gave us "a gift" in the form of the Palace of Culture and Science, which we did not want (we preferred the underground). 170 tenement houses, which by some miracle survived the war, were demolished to build the palace.
For us Poles, this is/was a great disaster.

Thanks! I was relying on the UNESCO website & their page about the "Historic Centre of Warsaw."

What is the source of your information on 170 miraculously intact tenement houses demolished to build the Palace of Culture and Science? And, what exactly great disaster for us Poles are you mentioning?

The old town was rebuilt based on the plans of the old town used for the engineering exams of the university. The buildings just outside of the old town used the paintings of Canaletto to help in reconstruction
