I live in California and the State laws are such that if two people are living together eventually, i dont know how many years together, they are considered as a couple, whether married or not. If they part ways, one of them, usually the woman, gets half the assets.

My adult daughters will inherit the house, but If I die before my girlfriend, I want her to be able to live in the house as long as she wants to. When she dies, then my daughters will inherit the house. I do not want it to go to her adult children. This way i protect all three ladies that I care about. My girlfriend will always have a home, and my girls will inherit a free house. No marriage nonsense or state intervention will trump my wishes.

Two ways I look at this: 1. If you are over 60, have a good work-related/State pension, savings, own a property DO NOT GET MARRIED. There (sadly) are men who will flatter you, love-bomb you and make you feel really wanted, all the time they're trying to get what you have got all by yourself. Be wary. 2. We have a whole generation of men who are totally screwed up. They went after a good-looking piece of skirt to show her off to their friends (rather than getting to know her morale compass) and she took him for everything: she quickly churned out a few kids so she would be tied to him for life then when they divorced she gets most of his money. Worst thing about all this? It's that when he meets a good woman - someone of strong moral fibre who has her own assets to bring to the table so she doesn't need his - he is an emotionally unavailable commitment-phobe who is so mentally damaged by losing all his money that he just sleeps around, hurting all the women who he meets along the way. No wonder relationships are f-ed!!!
I completely agree with this. As a single, unmarried woman in her 50s with no children, I have seen this a lot. Then these guys come to me complaining about their exes and wanting me to be their free therapist. I don’t meet many men my age who have truly worked through their divorce. Most are bitter.
