I lived in Dunsmuir from 1973-77 and we lived in an old house right by the railroad tracks at the north end of the yard. I was 8-12 then and as the railroad employees humped a string of cars into the yard, I'd wait until he passed then jumped on the end to catch a free ride to the center of town which was where the yard was. As a kid you don't really know how lucky you are to be living next to some amazing history but now I'm grateful. I now live in San Antonio, Texas and model SP in the era I grew up in. Dad retired from UP a few years back and he was with SP when they merged in 1996 and it was sad to see the flag fall. Dad also worked on the Modoc Line and has some great stories. Working in the railroad industry wasn't my path, I chose to be a career Soldier and now I'm retired.
G'day from Australia ...fantastic vid guys ...I'm a BNSF fan mostly on the back of the Santa Fe days but I have to say nobody does heritage like Union Pacific...absolutely respectful and true..The Feather Canyon is a bucket list thing for me when I hope to visit the U.S. one day ...gorgeous place...thanks..
I know Im asking randomly but does someone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account? I stupidly lost the password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me
@Ramon Jaxson thanks so much for your reply. I found the site on google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
awesome video! I liked the slide show at the end. those are some great photos. I really like the one in Tobin just before it entered the bridge (@ 18:26). that was a neat still.
Very true of passenger trains. However 'merica moves freight like no ones business. If you want to relax and sightsee and time is not an issue from A to B, take a chance on Amtrak. If you need to be somewhere, definitely drive or book a flight.
old flatbeder : Yeah! The one waiting pulled up a bit at 5.22 engineer is probably thinking, well, I’ve compressed these towers here long enough with my zillion ton vibrator, think I’ll put some fresh steel and rock beneath us! I wonder if the big dam had gone out, it might have wiped all that out?
Thank you for the compliment! The 6936, as far as I know, is still in working condition but has been stored in Cheyenne, WY like the E-units most of the time for the last several years and doesnt even seem to get out on excursions anymore, Im not entirely sure why this is but theres been talk that the suits at UP simply wanted less of these old machines operating and I believe the steam/heritage team was trimmed back substantially around the time the 4014 arrived on scene and since then the 4014 has been their main focus, aside from the 844. The 1996 SP heritage unit is still running around the system regularly hauling tonnage and was last reported on Heritageunits.com last week headed west through Wyoming on an intermodal train. And the WP GP20 #2001 that of course belongs to the Feather River Rail Society/WPRM is still being cared for and maintained by that fine group of folks at the museum in Portola, CA that also owns the rolling stock on this train. They really are a class act and pour their hearts and souls into keeping alive a small but important part of western railroad history. Of course with the UP's now years old change of policy, no piece of equipment thats not solely being moved for revenue purposes is allowed to turn a wheel on UP rails, except in very rare circumstances, or something to that effect. At any rate, this means that unique operations like this museum train, for public interest, are highly unlikely to happen again in the forseeable future as the UP now considers it futile to participate in such events.
Agreed, but the thing is that they were headed to an SP town for display. One year the FRRS was able to borrow both 1983 and 1996 for the museum train, couple years before this was shot.
sounds cool enough but it would be very difficult to make all of that power stick to the rails. I would bet that we have most likely seen the biggest engines already made. UP was the dual diesel king and most of those units did not do well enough to stay long, the DD40AX is the best example although it would be nice to see some of the others today like the u50 or the alco C855
Back when this was shot in the last of the good ol days, when the UP still actually had a PR department and was enthusiastic about participating in events with communities across the nation, it was commonplace for word to trickle down to the dispatchers about making sure special fan trains like these got the most publicity possible out of any given situation. Case in point, im sure this unofficial photo op was planned a little bit ahead so that the centennial was posed on the bridge for the meet with the BN train. Meets of any kind all the way out on the Keddie Wye are extremely rare to my knowledge, given in part by what you mentioned about who would normally have first priority. Hard to believe things have changed so much at the UP in just seven short years. At least the steam team was able to pull off the Big Boy restoration by this year as they promised they would in 2014.
It hasnt ran I think since 2016 Its mothballed in Cheyenne along with the E9 units Ive heard they keep it in working condition for the most part but I havent heard much about it since 2016 or so

Yes! Big mountains. The Sierra Nevada. Matter of fact, in 1850 the CA/NV border was drawn right down the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada because all of the gold was here.
Sadly, no, it hasn't been operational since at least 2018. It has been mothballed in the shops in Cheyenne, WY, and is now slated to be donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Illinois along with the 3985 Challenger and some other pieces.

The most awesome locomotive ever! What a privilege to be an engineer of such a monster!
Wonder what you got to-do to be able to run the train? ....draw straws or have a kickboxing match? Lol.
The unit behind the DD40 is an EMD SD70ACe, UP #1996 wearing commemorative Southern Pacific colors. One of six UP "heritage" units.
Great work. I love it. Over the years many roads that I got to see and remember are not here anymore.

That's awesome! The Centenial, UP1996 and a WP GP9! And all those old cars too! I wish I could've seen that in person
The horns echoing through those passes - OMG that's awesome! GREAT vid! That's a fave and a save.

One of the biggest diesels ever to run on the UP railroad, runs once more. The DD40AX #6936 lives again!
Whaddya mean "one of"
The single biggest diesel to ever run on any railroad at 6600HP The centennial is the largest diesel loco ever produced.
Followed by the less-successful DD35 and DD35A. Of UP's dual-engined locomotives, only the DDA40X made it to preservation.
@david Ng ,, the DD35 and DD35A led to the DDA40X they came first ,,,DDA40X was better to look at too
Right. That’s what I meant. I also forgot the ALCO Century 855.
the DD40AX looks like it belongs in a lash-up with modern wide-nose power!
Impressive machines and scenery in a great video. Thanks
Wow, I saw this one in Roseville Yard Thursday morning on my way to work. I didn't have my camera with me that day. Nice catch.
wow a western pacific gp 9 well you dont see that often its pretty rare to see it you are lucky to see it
Fantastic shots George! Man I wish I was there...
Great Stuff ! Thanks For Sharing ! I miss the FRC !

Very cool! Loving this in Jersey!
Cool scenery and catches!
Rail transportation in America is best described as slow and leisurely.
Very true of passenger trains. However 'merica moves freight like no ones business. If you want to relax and sightsee and time is not an issue from A to B, take a chance on Amtrak. If you need to be somewhere, definitely drive or book a flight.
Great filming and scenery.. that 6936 is today's Big Boy!
Nice video George. They really put together a nice train this year.
Can you imagine the vibration on the bridge?
...that's why they are taking it slow(?)
old flatbeder : Yeah!

Look at the Union Pacific gas turbine 26b. The big blow
Wow, a very strange and interesting consist.
Clearly, I should have hung around Oroville a couple more days and hooked up with you. The 6936 is one cool locomotive. Thanks for sharing.
My 5 y/o LOVES the Centennial...
Keddie Wye is where the UP/WP Canyon Sub meets the BNSF Gateway Sub headed to Oregon Trunk it is one of the greatest sites in Railfanning
I must have because I got pictures by the bridge deep in the canyon, it's the bridge that WP the Zephyr picture was taken
That’s the best rr video I’ve seen in a while. Wonder were 6936 and the other locos are today and if they’re still in running condition. Anybody know?
Thank you for the compliment! The 6936, as far as I know, is still in working condition but has been stored in Cheyenne, WY like the E-units most of the time for the last several years and doesnt even seem to get out on excursions anymore, Im not entirely sure why this is but theres been talk that the suits at UP simply wanted less of these old machines operating and I believe the steam/heritage team was trimmed back substantially around the time the 4014 arrived on scene and since then the 4014 has been their main focus, aside from the 844.

Great shots, what a day!
UP owns the route but used to Union Pacific also shares with BNSF
Man I love 1996, but given the railroad that used to be here I think we all know who should've been up next to the DD40
I would think 3985, and 844.
Trains N' Stuff WP heritage, and yes them too
Ah, didn't get it at first.
Agreed, but the thing is that they were headed to an SP town for display. One year the FRRS was able to borrow both 1983 and 1996 for the museum train, couple years before this was shot.
I would like to see Catapillar build a DD-90 Supermac...this engine would have 2 V-16's rated at 6,000 hp.a piece.(12,000 hp.total output)
sounds cool enough but it would be very difficult to make all of that power stick to the rails. I would bet that we have most likely seen the biggest engines already made. Dude can you imagine the weigh of the train it would be like around 1.000.000 lbs
I mean like between 750.000 and 900.000 lbs
The whole point of the centennial was to be lighter faster and more powerful and go further with more fuel but I love the idea
@@mattskeptical3608 still less than 4014
Really cool video!!!
I thought the thumbnail was a model train
Awesome Video
What a great catch
Union Pacific has a James horse shoe curve cool I never knew that until now
All DDA40X's have been retired from what I know.
Except that one seen on the video
...I wonder why?

Super, tnx form.p. Numbers, were cabooses, that nice?
Thanks!
Very nice.
I'd shit myself if I had to walk along the edge of that bridge
IMPRESSIVE CLIP!
Is this the only UP locomotive to have a Leslie RS3L?
why DDA40X not running again in this year?
What a beautiful beast :)
The dd40ax should go first it has most priority cause it’s special but let the freight pass cause Union Pacific is friendly and nice with kind

Why did they stop making the big locomotive ?
Oh wow it’s still runing
It hasnt ran I think since 2016
Its mothballed in Cheyenne along with the E9 units
Ive heard they keep it in working condition for the most part but I havent heard much about it since 2016 or so

Awesome !!
Very nice Vid. When will they come back through Oroville?
