I agree, especially because she went in backwards on the off-hand side (so basically being on the outside of the turn, so having limited visibility on the inside, because the distance to the mirror is large) I've seen single trucks struggle with doing that while Dauminique had a trailer.

This is what I was thinking. Watching truckers back up at my job(FDDA 25 years), some of those guys have no business in a truck.
The only ones you see with real skill are the wrecker drivers, backing up a full tractor and trailer, the whole thing with the wreck is over 100 ft long.

Over 25 years of repairing and road testing about every type of heavy over the road type of vehicle, I've never seen a driver that is hard on their transmission. In fact it's normally the opposite, where you're on a test drive, you're watching a laptop, and you need the driver to be giving it 100 percent load to try and find an issue and they are babying everything.
About like 90 plus percent of dumps nowadays have auto transmissions anyways. It's rare to find a manual anymore, esp in a fleet. People just can't drive sticks so they buy them where any driver can just get in them and go.
Usually it's the over the road tractors with sleeper cabs that have sticks(and even then they will be manual matics have the time, or they'll have some type of top 2 auto shift for passing. I'm sure that it something that is phased out now though.)
I left FDDA in the fall of 2018 and work for the government, but if anything there are probably even more automatics out there.
Usually people go with sticks for durability, although Allisons are pretty tough nowadays.

I used to be a truck driving instructor back in the 80's and I can say with 100% confidence that you would have made me proud to have been one of my students. As far as shifting goes you always select the gear for the application or upcoming application. As far as using the clutch goes it is personal preference. I have always gone by it's cheaper to replace a clutch than a transmission, but so long as you are able to match RPM to road speed to proper gear selection it's just fine. Enjoy your videos...keep'em coming!

I totally agree with you about shifting intuitively, a good driver knows their vehicle and what gear is best for the conditions. I have only owned three vehicles in my life (I'm 69) with automatic transmissions, and two of them because a manual transmission was not available, the third I was told that it was a stick and when I went to look at it, it was an auto but I liked it so much that I went ahead and bought it. I have only changed a clutch once. I swapped a 440 for the 383 that was in my '68 Roadrunner and figured since I had the engine out it made sense to put in a new clutch. If you know how to drive you don't wear out parts.

backing up that kind of hill takes fine throtle control. gotta keep enough power but not so much the tires spin. if you wind engine up as soon as one tire slip you just digg a hole. not enough power and you stall. just the right amount so a tire can scratch but engine will not run off and cause tires to dig. you do awesome at just the right amount of power. we can hear it in the exhuast.

Hello, we enjoy watching you drive, the both of us sitting at the bench, here in Australia. We have watched all this video and after the 4 or 5 loads, we are knocking off for the night to. Driving our bar stools at the kitchen bench! Love your style of driving, if it works for you.....nice truck. Amazing how long the trailer drawbars are there as opposed to here.

As a dump truck driver in Wisconsin, I've never seen someone driving with a trailer. There are a lot of double tag axles, which is what i drive. I have Ben in automatic and manual. I like manual for it's helps keep my left foot from going to sleep.

You do an awesome job backing your rig. I don't drive a big rig but I do pull several size trailers. And when backing people do get impatient. The other day I had to parallel park my truck and trailer to unload. Not to pat myself on the back did in one shot but I am only 40' long. 🎉.

Dauminique, as a non-dump truck driver, I believe your shifting and backing skills have been honed pretty good. You do both without thinking. kudos. Addition: I worked on Teletype machines, computers and more. and sometimes things just don't make sense. I found that taking a lunch break, or even leaving and coming back tomorrow solved a lot of problems. So, I agree, that driver leaving for a bit allowed for some mellowing out before trying it again.

You do a great job of backing. When I work done the chicken farm. We had a semi that had to bri in egg cartons. And they couldn't even back around the building. Towards the loading dock was they can only drive forward. So they had a student driver and she said let me drive. And she idle that truck up just a little bit. And put it in reverse and never stopped once until she got to the doc.

Daum the guy that is dishing on you about your shifting is only jealous that you shifting better than him. Not everyone everyone does it the same way. You do what works for you and your truck. If you were constantly having transmission problems then yes you are doing something wrong. You don't have transmission problems and you shift very smoothly without grinding gears. I got to where I didn't use the clutch like you. I see a lot of these drivers shifting on flat ground that make the cab just about twist one tire off the ground because they don't know how to shift. So keep doing what you do and ignore them beautiful lady. Happy birthday BOBBY.

You’re absolutely right, use the gear that’s needed . These guys that shift all through the gears when they’re empty or even on flat ground don’t make any sense or splitting the top gears on flat ground or going down grade is just a waste of time and fuel. You Know How to drive a truck. YOU are a truck driver take it from me I drove trucks for over 54 years before retiring 😉

Having run construction sites myself (and seeing all those contractors by the road on your first dump) I never let a truck I ordered - back up unassisted when I have myself or crew present. Not that I needed to assist any driver, but just stopping traffic so the driver can do their job. Yeah, I know those guys were on another project, but as a former driver, I’ve stopped to assist a truck backing up even when it’s not my job. Just driver to driver courtesy. I’ll tell ya, I’d be sweating backing up that rig on that road. Nice job.

37:19 this sounds like somebody who cares about their equipment, or possibly owns their own truck :-)
As a business owner in the medical field, not that that’s a relevant, you have a business owners mindset!
I wish I knew a lot more about trucks but when you started talking about the transmission I thought it was a Eaton 10 speed transmission split shift but I guess I was wrong.
That’s so cool she knows how to double clutch and she knows how to float the gears! That’s a true truck, driver right there. As a 53-year-old male I operate lots of equipment, including motorcycles. I would love to learn from someone like her how to actually drive a truck!
