When you were in Knoxville you missed another notable note. When you were taking a selfie in front of the Courthouse at 10:35, you should have noticed that there was a Texas State flag fying under the American Flag. There are 2 flags in that square. The Lone Star State Flag of Texas was designed and made in Knoxville, Georgia. Joanna Troutman, a 17 year old girl, made it as a battle flag for a group of volunteers going from Georgia to Texas to fight for the Independence of Texas from Mexico. The flag was later adopted as the State Flag. Joanna Troutman's body was moved from Crawford County, Georgia to Austin, Texas. A statue of a young woman sewing a flag is at her gravesite and a protrait of Joanna is hung in the Capitol. An Historical Marker is on the grounds of the Courthouse in Knoxville. The Courthouse is across the road from the place where Joanna lived when the flag was made.
That would have caused a controversy in the pc world if he pointed that out. - Enjoying the videos. Learning a lot of history that I wouldn’t have been exposed to elsewhere.
It just dawned on me this morning while watching today's episode that Adam is our modern day Charles Kuralt, the famed CBS journalist who took the back roads to shine a spotlight on Americana with his "On the Road" segments. Love this new vision for the channel, Adam! Looking forward to continued adventures and learning more about this great land.

That's what I like about this new phase you're in with creating content. Everyone goes to the big deal over in Atlanta but with this adventure you were able to go deep into the story and show some of the lesser known locations. Well Done Adam as usual!

Hi Adam, I'm from & live in Columbus. I'm calling the city today about that plaque that's missing at Heritage Park, once I find out I'll let you know. (Also buried here in Porterdale cemetary is the Mother of Blues, Gertrude "Ma Rainey", as well as her Landmark former home with exhibits & artifacts. Additionally, Netflix has a movie from 2020 called, "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom", featuring Viola Davis and Chadwick Bosman in his last performance before his death.) Thank you for coming to Columbus!
@@alianningson3829 Ok I just got off the phone with Justin from the Columbus Historic Foundation, not the city that I thought would handle this, and Justin said the plaque was stolen and the items at Heritage Park (the statues) are going to be relocated soon as they are "Redoing Heritage park", which is going to be a 2 year project. Once that project is complete they will move these items back to Heritage Park, complete with a new plaque, albeit in all honesty I've never been to Heritage Park, its in an obscure place, to me these statues would be better elsewhere more visible to the public. I inquired about a new Historic sign that was in really bad condition at the 2nd house and Justin said he would look into getting that one replaced. I inquired about a "mural" possibly downtown on Broadway of Dr. Pemberton, where Adam spotted and those buildings are privately owned he said and it would be up to the individual owner. I also inquired about Dr. Pemberton's tombstone and our city is in charge of this under the Historic Linwood Foundation. I have placed a call with them and I'm waiting for a return call. I truly believe people from all over the world & country come here to Columbus to see these historic sites of Dr. Pemberton including his gravesite and they are putting money into our economy, we should at least should have his gravesite in better condition and our city should honor Dr. Pemberton with a mural as well. I will update on his tombstone when I get the information from Linwood cemetary. Thank you for your interest.

I've several videos on the Coca Cola museum, but I've never seen anyone do the inventor's birthplace. This was cool! Thanks for sharing! Although Coke is my last name, I didn't like it until I was in my 20's. lol
The Rialto theater in Columbus is the world's oldest purposely built motion picture theater. A Mrs. Mamie Banks bought the Rialto property in 1903 for the purpose of building a motion picture theater. Before that, motion pictures where shown in dance halls, school auditoriums, beer halls etc. The Rialto had a separate projection booth keeping the audience away from the highly explosive nitrate film. I ran the last reel of film in the Rialto.

Thank you so much for taking us with you. My brother and sister-in-law have traveled to all 50 states. Like you took back roads through small towns and documented in photos not videos. They went to Alaska on a cruise and flew to Hawaii but other than that all other states they drove through. I think the secret to longevity is to never stop learning. I am learning so much history and weird facts I did not know thank you!

Adam if you are still in columbus good bit of history to film here. Opera house has john wilkes booth history and may still be haunted by his ghost. Naval museum is interesting. Woodruff or bradley house is now an art museum up the road from dowtown. Beautiful victorian homes in downtown one especially by the Columbus water works building on the main entrance side. Literally right next to it. Civil war Battle of columbus was fought at the 14th street bridge and riverfront. Unfortunately they tore down a historic home to build that parking garage by the 14th st brigde. They could have put the paking garage where the new indigo hotel is across the street, but no couldn't do that.
We live in Columbus as well... Yes, so much history here. Go to Dinglewood for the best Hot Dog you have ever had, Scrambled dog! Lived here my whole life!
My Grandfather saved the bottle tops & made a wooden doll with bottle top legs, & arms that held a bowl for chips. On his head was a smaller bowl used to put dip in. He was clever, & very creative. Enjoyed learning more of the history of Coca-Cola.
My late husband always asked for "coca-cola in a can" at any restaurant we went to... fancy or not. He was a grassroots guy and looked grouchy if they didn't have it. 😀 Glass bottles came a close second... Fond memories. I will have a small can today in honour of him, Pemberton and you, Adam!! At the risk of aging myself further, I remember being given Coca Cola syrup for stomach ailments. I recall that syrup being thick and gross tasting. But effective.

I have a folding metal chair that has Coca-Cola stamped in the part that when you sit in it your shoulders touch it. Rick Dale from the old t.v. show American Restoration saw it and told me that they are extremely rare and they where only given out to select people . And in all of his years of doing restorations he has only seen 4. It's got what some people call patina and is the original color for Coke which is yellow and red. I got it at a yard sale and it was the only Coke thing that the guy had and he did not know anything about it's history. Rick did not seem to happy when I told him I only paid $40.00 for it.

I am from Georgia. I grew up in a town in Metro Atlanta called Lilburn and went to college in Lagrange. My first tattoo was done in Columbus. Like most Georgians all soda products are called Coke. LOL! I am really enjoying this series.

Thank you for this Coca Cola tour (still my favorite carbonated soft drink) here in Switzerland you nearly can't find any glass bottles anymore (all recycle plastic) and it tastes different in plastic than in glass for sure, i rather have glass bottles, this means i have to go into a bar or restaurant to get one.. uugh! William Bartram's dad took him to what is now Florida and Georgia when William was a little boy, before the American Revolution. They collected plant and animal specimens for an English gentleman. Among others they collected a specimen of a beautiful tree they named the Flanklinia after Benjamin Franklin. Fifty years later he made the same journey. When he looked for the Franklinia's they were gone from the only slope where they were known to grow. All Franklinia trees are now descended from the sample that his dad sent to London and are not found in the wild.
Not a good idea to plant some nonnative species on native land could've been how the trees died just like Apples and Oranges some northern species won't survive in the south and vice versa.

Another great video. Loved every minute. It brought back my memory of some years ago I was friends and lived next door to a Pepsi Co. programmer. He would tweak the formula for their different soda products and bring them to us to test to see if we could tell the difference. Super sweet smart guy.
I did a bit of research, Adam, and John Pemberton's son Charles may not have been thinking too clearly when he sold the Coke formula for a pittance. Seems he died not too long afterward in 1894 -- of an opium overdose.
That was so interesting about the background of Coca-Cola, and its founder. I looked up once why Coke tastes differently in other countries, and it does. I recall reading that the key ingredients are the same, but the water, sweetners, and carbonation often differ, which affects the taste, a bit. I'm loving this roadtrip, Adam, and I'm a Coke fan. Not to give a spoiler, I hope but a trip worth taking would be to the first licensed bottler of Coca Cola in Vicksburg Mississippi at the Biedenharn candy company. The candy store it still there as a museum. My son and I have visited there a few times while geocaching on road trips.

It used to be made with real cane sugar. But in US only it has manmade fructose corn syrup in it. Mexico has the original cane sugar version which some restaurants have in the US but its called Mexican coke.
You need to visit Cartersville Ga north of Atlanta. They have the first outdoor advertisement for Coke and it is still there today. Downtown at Young Brothers Pharmacy

Adam if you are still in columbus good bit of history to film here. Opera house has john wilkes booth history and may still be haunted by his ghost. Naval museum is interesting. Woodruff or bradley house is now an art museum up the road from dowtown. Beautiful victorian homes in downtown one especially by the Columbus water works building on the main entrance side. Literally right next to it. Civil war Battle of columbus was fought at the 14th street bridge and riverfront. Unfortunately they tore down a historic home to build that parking garage by the 14th st brigde. They could have put the paking garage where the new indigo hotel is across the street, but no couldn't do that.
We live in Columbus as well... Yes, so much history here. Go to Dinglewood for the best Hot Dog you have ever had, Scrambled dog! Lived here my whole life!

My Grandfather saved the bottle tops & made a wooden doll with bottle top legs, & arms that held a bowl for chips. On his head was a smaller bowl used to put dip in. He was clever, & very creative. Enjoyed learning more of the history of Coca-Cola.

My late husband always asked for "coca-cola in a can" at any restaurant we went to... fancy or not. He was a grassroots guy and looked grouchy if they didn't have it. 😀 Glass bottles came a close second...

At the risk of aging myself further, I remember being given Coca Cola syrup for stomach ailments. I recall that syrup being thick and gross tasting. But effective.
I've very glad you got the facts right (Macon Native here) over what Atlanta loves to say, I grew up in Macon and went to college in Columbus so my life is full of the forgotten history of GA. It's a lot of interesting fun. Great video! Thank you!

I think this is one of my favorite video of yours, the ones with your Dad were special also.
I have a folding metal chair that has Coca-Cola stamped in the part that when you sit in it your shoulders touch it. Rick Dale from the old t.v. show American Restoration saw it and told me that they are extremely rare and they where only given out to select people . And in all of his years of doing restorations he has only seen 4. It's got what some people call patina and is the original color for Coke which is yellow and red. I got it at a yard sale and it was the only Coke thing that the guy had and he did not know anything about it's history. Rick did not seem to happy when I told him I only paid $40.00 for it.

I am from Georgia. I grew up in a town in Metro Atlanta called Lilburn and went to college in Lagrange. My first tattoo was done in Columbus. Like most Georgians all soda products are called Coke. LOL! I am really enjoying this series.
Malady is a french word (used in english too) means illness! Thank you for this Coca Cola tour (still my favorite carbonated soft drink) here in Switzerland you nearly can't find any glass bottles anymore (all recycle plastic) and it tastes different in plastic than in glass for sure, i rather have glass bottles, this means i have to go into a bar or restaurant to get one.. uugh! Fun fact some people mix redwine with cola here and call it Korea but don't ask my why lol

Coca-Cola inventor John Pemberton is said to have written this recipe in his diary shortly before his death in 1888.[28][29] The recipe does not specify when or how the ingredients are mixed, nor the flavoring oil quantity units of measure (though it implies that the "Merchandise 7X" was mixed first). This was common in recipes at the time, as it was assumed that preparers knew the method.
Ingredients:
1 oz (28 g) caffeine citrate
3 oz (85 g) citric acid
1 US fl oz (30 ml) vanilla extract
1 US qt (946 ml) lime juice
2.5 oz (71 g) "flavoring" (i.e., "Merchandise 7X")
30 lb (14 kg) sugar
4 US fl oz (118.3 ml) fluid extract of coca leaves (flavor essence of the coca leaf)
2.5 US gal (9.5 l; 2.1 imp gal) water
caramel sufficient to give color
"Mix caffeine acid and lime juice in 1 quart boiling water add vanilla and flavoring when cool."
Flavoring (Merchandise 7X):
1 qrt alcohol
80 oil orange
40 oil cinnamon
120 oil lemon
20 oil coriander
40 oil nutmeg
40 oil neroli
"Let stand 24 hours."

William Bartram's dad took him to what is now Florida and Georgia when William was a little boy, before the American Revolution. They collected plant and animal specimens for an English gentleman. Among others they collected a specimen of a beautiful tree they named the Flanklinia after Benjamin Franklin.
Fifty years later he made the same journey. When he looked for the Franklinia's they were gone from the only slope where they were known to grow.
All Franklinia trees are now descended from the sample that his dad sent to London and are not found in the wild.
Not a good idea to plant some nonnative species on native land could've been how the trees died just like Apples and Oranges some northern species won't survive in the south and vice versa.

Another great video. Loved every minute. It brought back my memory of some years ago I was friends and lived next door to a Pepsi Co. programmer. He would tweak the formula for their different soda products and bring them to us to test to see if we could tell the difference. Super sweet smart guy.

I did a bit of research, Adam, and John Pemberton's son Charles may not have been thinking too clearly when he sold the Coke formula for a pittance. Seems he died not too long afterward in 1894 -- of an opium overdose.
Too much of a sip of his own cocaine soda.

That was so interesting about the background of Coca-Cola, and its founder. I looked up once why Coke tastes differently in other countries, and it does. I recall reading that the key ingredients are the same, but the water, sweetners, and carbonation often differ, which affects the taste, a bit. I'm loving this roadtrip, Adam, and I'm a Coke fan. Not to give a spoiler, I hope but a trip worth taking would be to the first licensed bottler of Coca Cola in Vicksburg Mississippi at the Biedenharn candy company. The candy store it still there as a museum. My son and I have visited there a few times while geocaching on road trips.

We are the home of AFLAC. Lots of movies filmed here including Tank and The Green Berets as well as We Were Soldiers.. So many. Callaway Gardens, yes the iconic golf name, is just up the road and the Callaway mansion is in Lagrange. Lived here my whole life! We would still love to take you to dinner and dont forget... It used to be made with real cane sugar. But in US only it has manmade fructose corn syrup in it. Mexico has the original cane sugar version which some restaurants have in the US but its called Mexican coke.

You need to visit Cartersville Ga north of Atlanta. They have the first outdoor advertisement for Coke and it is still there today. Downtown at Young Brothers Pharmacy
