    Maybe the single greatest lyric ever written, "If they gave me a fortune, my pleasure would be small. I could lose it all tomorrow and never mind at all. But if I should lose your love dear, I don't know what I'd do; For I know I'll never find another you." Absolute magic!

    Once again, Elton John said that the 3 best female singers were Eva Cassidy, Karen Carpenter and Judith Durham here of The Seekers - he nailed it!

    I am a Yank who grew up with and was in awe of the American and British groups of the '60s and 70s. But I can state unequivocally that the Seekers, (from the great country of Australia) were/are as great as ANY group in the history of Music. You GO Aussies !!!...

      Lovely comment. Being a little girl in 1960s Australia, Judith was my absolute idol. She has the richest yet most pure voice ever and her voice is as magnificent as it was then over 50 years later..

      @@starwood213 I just LOVE the way Judith holds back a little at the start of the song - making herself sound like a sort of 'backing vocal' for the 3 guys. Gradually, her voice becomes more dominant, and by the time she's doing her solo vocal (with the 3 guys doing the backing) you think "oh hello!! what's this???" - Wonderful stuff.

    • @starwood213
      @starwood213 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@madspaniel4271 Yes that's what I love every time I hear the song.. Genius vocal expression and all of a sudden her voice soars. Todays singers could learn an awful lot from this.

    • @madspaniel4271
      @madspaniel4271 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@starwood213 heh - todays singers? Judith didn't have 'auto-tune' - She didn't have the 'post production' techniques they have today. I bet she sounded every bit as good live as she did recorded (if not better). I was born a bit too late to see & appreciate Judith 'live' - but I HAVE seen Freddie Mercury (Queen) live... There are some people that can sing, i mean REALLY sing, but they are few & far between :)

    The Seekers, Peter Paul & Mary, and The Mamas and The Papas all came from the 1960s folk singer tradition, like the Kingston Trio and the Browns and the Limelighters.

    Lots of younger people today don't realize how big folk music was back in the early 60s. It was clean-cut feel-good music that brings back memories of good times as an adolescent kid. Great tunes by people who could actually sing and harmonize, and in most cases wrote the music. Btw the Mamas and the Papas came out of the folk music scene and were more folk-rock.

Try 'The Carnival is Over' next. its another pop song that was originally a Russian folk song, as was 'Those were the days' ( Mary Hopkins) which you reacted to recently. Also, if you watch any of their complete concerts, where the chaps do some solo singing the,selves, and Judith sometimes plays the piano, you really come to appreciate what great vocalists and musicians they all were.

When I was about 8 years old, my mom was babysitting a 3-month-old boy named Andrew Paul, and I loved to hold him in my arms. I always loved to sing, and I put this song on the record player and sang to him. The baby laughed and was absolutely delighted by this song. He never reacted that way to any other song. If he cried and I sang it, he immediately stopped crying and began to laugh again. Thank you for bringing up this beautiful memory! ✌🎵

    Harri, if you want to hear another song that is written about undying love try "You're My Everything" a 1967 single recorded by The Temptations for Motown. It is the first of three singles to be co-written for the group by Motown songwriter Rodger Penzabene. Penzabene wrote the song about his girl friend, who later cheated on him, after that he penned "I Wish It Would Rain" and "I Could Never Love Another" reportedly drew from his real-life pain and suffering.

    The whole record is great, but most especially, that intro is so well played and recorded it just jumps out and pulls you in by the ears!
    n.b. I have a few tapes of "oldies 103" - a wonderful Boston Mass. radio station in the 1990s and every time they play "Georgie Girl" the DJs say something about it being British - clearly nobody told them their mistake cos they keep saying it on all their shows!

    Your comparison with the Mamas and Papas is correct. Although there was a vast difference in size between them, Judith's and Cass' strident voices always came over the top of everything else.

    Judith had a great interest in Gospel which you picked up on and they did record some great gospel songs like Open Up Them Pearly Gates, When The Stars Begin To Fall, We Shall Not Be Moved, ( which as a Brit you may remember Big Daddy entering the wrestling ring to). They're harmonies are unsurpassed and Judith's voice is one in a million. They still hold the record for the biggest attendance at a concert in the Southern Hemisphere and I notice plenty of recommendations below, all of which I'd endorse.

    These folks one of many folk groups that were popular then. Great stuff. You should check out The Kingston Trio, The Brothers Four, and the other folk groups back then - they were all great.

    Judith is a great singer. I’ve always loved Georgy Girl. You should check that out. It is the theme song from a movie of the same name.

    The Seekers were Australian. They were very popular in the 60s and it was a sad day when they split up. They had a string of hits. Perhaps their most iconic song is The Carnival is over. It's a bit of a tear jerker, but very beautiful. A more upbeat song of theirs is Georgie Girl, written for a film. Judith Durham the singer had a beautiful voice. She had a solo career post seekers, but wasn't so big as when they'd been a group. Love to hear more from them. Play some more Harri!

    I agree with you about love songs. People these days just don't seem to have the commitment to their loved ones as in times past. People in general have become quite selfish overall. That's why marriages are failing and families are splitting.

    The self-sacrificing aspect of love portrayed in 60s music, as you say, is so true. Might not have been genuine in real life every time, but definitely held up then as an ideal, something to aspire to.
