Well, Angela, I grew up in the 60's so I was there when this came out. Everyone loved it. I would put it on my phone not only because of its lyrics and music but also because of the nostalgia. This song brings many happy memories and feelings back. Guess you had to be there. The female singer is Judith Durham who kept that beautiful, clear voice throughout her life. The Seekers, an Australian group, did remarkably well considering that they were competing with the onset of the Beatles. They broke up but then reunited many years later though they were much older but showed that they could still deliver. They immediately resumed their great popularity as if they had never left the stage. Judith died recently which is a tremendous loss to us all.
I'm glad there's such a good quality video of them performing almost 60 years ago. Little piece of music history and years in the future people can appreciate what talented performers they are and a taste of what Folk Music in the 1960s sounded like.
The wonderful voice of Judith Durham who we lost last yr..you need to check out a few more of their mega hits..Morningtown Ride..The Carnival is Over..Georgy Girl which was the soundtrack to the film of the same name starring Alan Bates..James Mason and Lynn Redgrave..Also..A world of Our Own.. the Mammas and the Pappas had two female voices but Judith harmonised on her own and still made it the best part.. she left to go solo and later on said how she regretted it..she got married but was plagued by poor health..they got back together in the 2010's and were touring consistently..Judith said it gave her such meaning to her life after the loss of her husband..They were from Australia by the way.. 🇬🇧💕🙏✝️👏👍🇦🇺
There was something about this song when it started that felt familiar and I just couldn’t put my finger on it - then the lead singer came in and I was like I know that voice, then you mentioned the song “Georgy Girl” - I went AHHHH THATS IT! thanks loads for putting me out of my misery! The Seekers were HUGE in the ‘60s - so much so they actually knocked The Beatles off number one on the UK charts at one point. Judith Durham, the lead singer, is a legend of Australian music, and much loved. Her voice remained as crystal clear and precise right into her 70s. Sadly passed away in 2022 the same week we lost Olivia Newton John. From their 60s period I strongly recommend Georgie Girl and The Carnival is Over, and from later I am Australian from one of their reunion concerts.
I like the seekers I don't think they were in the Beatles competition in the sixties the Beatles took the top five on the billboard charts to my knowledge no one else in has done that l do like the seekers they are in my phone I respect your opinion but the to group's were on different levels

Absolutely. All you have to do is listen to her sing her unofficial version of Advance Australia Fair. She never lost her amazing voice she had here on this recording.

The Seekers were highly competent songwriters and wrote a good deal of their output but they also struck up a very productive relationship with British songwriter/producer Tom Springfield who supplied them with Georgy Girl, The Carnival Is Over, A World Of Our Own and this one. And, yes, he was the brother of Dusty.
It's very folksy, unheard of today, but this kind of music was part of the landscape in 1964, and I remember it fondly along with the rock and motown and soul and other stuff. EVERYTHING was good then!

This song is a masterpiece of the soul. The Folk Era at its Best. Brings me to tears every time I hear it. Might I suggest Mary Fahl, "October Project" 1993. It will blow your minds. Check it out. You wont regret it. Listen to the whole album. You'll see.

They do sound a lot like The Mamas And Papas. The woman singer, Judith Durham, quit the band a few years after this because of personal insecurities. She thought she was fat and ugly, but in reality, there were men all over the world who dreamed of her. She rejoined The Seekers many years later.
You do realise that the Mamas and Papas band was formed quite a time after the Seekers had already made it big and established that genre of music. Therefore the Mamas & Papas were more of a copy of the Seekers than the other way round. Also the Seekers were competing with reasonable success against the likes of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones for the number one top spot of the national weekly pop charts in the sixties, and still managed to produce very popular albums and songs worldwide for almost every decade from then until the early 2000s.
I grew up with the Seekers. When my father died there was six albums in the house, two of them were the Seekers. They were never played again (to my knowledge) but I remember the pictures on the albums. When there is no music faces mean a lot.

Because of some red tape their manager would not let them Record it , The Bee Gees Recorded it themselves and had a big hit with it .
