Had sibo, took Xifaxan for 2 weeks. Symptoms improved while on it however as soon as I finished the medication, my symptoms returned. FODMAP diet didn’t help either because some food seemed “safe” on the diet made me gassy and caused a lot of discomfort. I saved myself by following an elemental diet for 2 weeks, followed by antimicrobial agents such as oregano oil +Neem extract+ Berberine. Plus Iberogast + biofilm disruptor. Then slowly reintroducing food back that is low in fiber. Then slowly building fiber intake up. The regular GI doctors were useless. It’s really sad that patients go to doctors seeking help but don’t get adequate support. Good thing I was able to do my own research and help myself feel better
Good job taking your health in your own hands! I would love to see studies on a regimen like yours, but the horrible truth is that a study like that would struggle to find funding since there's no patent for a company to make money on afterwards. The resources for no-profit research is very limited. This is probably the main reason why our healthcare systems still struggle to treat IBS and SIBO.
Some years ago, I diagnosed my wife's decades-long constipation as SIBO (but I had not met the term 'SIBO'), after colonoscopies and all sorts of drugs. I cured it with a cheap Polish kefir. After several years of kefir, there seems to be a permanent change.

I was given Allicin megadose for SIBO. It made me feel worse. I got more bloating and my bowel movement was hugely interrupted. I am trying to rebuild it by myself now by eating fresh veggies and fruits. After one week of eating like this, I feel finally much better. Thanks for mentioning that the antimicrobials might not be the ideal solution, cause it's not about killing bad guys, but more about supporting good guys to balance it out.
Figuring out the root cause of SIBO can be tricky- I've worked with people who swear their SIBO was started by antibiotics, disordered eating, or severe times of stress. I'm glad you mentioned the big ones, though- more people need to know about the risks of taking PPIs and Opioids!
Would ZOE ever be able to please talk about Gastroparesis (delayed emptying of the stomach)? This condition can lead to SIBO. Gastroparesis is rare in young people like myself (26) which is probably why there is very little helpful support available for living with this condition. I have been given no dietary advice from healthcare professionals so its been a difficult few years of trial and error. I worry that the ZOE advice on many of your great podcasts might not directly apply to people with this condition, particularly about the timing of eating events. That being said, I have found that avoiding ultra-processed foods has helped me immensely, so thank you.
Why would ZOE need to discuss gastroparesis. If you’ve literally been diagnosed and given no medical advice than that is medical negligence and u should sue and get another doctor. From just a basic google search u would see the treatment is prokinetics, liquid or low fibre diet, and often low fat. If that doesn’t work than feeding tubes, or tpn
Christopher Gardner did research on fiber and fermented food. A group would do both in order. They found that the group that fermented food first did NOT get problems when they then had the fibers.

Has anyone looked into SIBO and low stomach acid? Many people have low stomach acid. Low stomach is much more common than high stomach acid, but they both have similar symptoms, so often the issue is mistakingly diagnosed as too much acid and then treated with acid blockers, which will make it all worse. Having adequate amounts of stomach protect against invasive overgrowths of bacteria. I feel strongly there is a correlation between stomach acid levels and bacterial overgrowth.
In New zealand doctors do not ask the question why SIBO. In order to get the testing done I wanted I had to request the SIBO testing be done. A referral by my gastro professor was finally done. Even as a gastro professor he does not ask why I might have SIBO. He put the referral to have it done on my request because he doesn't know what is causing my diarehha and other abdominal issues and he made it clear he's not interested. A bile acid binder helped to stop the diarehha at least. Again I had to request such a test myself even when I don't actually have bile acid issues. Again the professor prescribed it and he said if it works use it. That is the appauling state of IBS treatment in NZ! Its simply perscribing off label medications to suppress symptoms. Over time such treatments make the underlying condition worse. And nobody asks why we have IBS and digestive issues in the first place!
That's what gastroenterologists do. I have had half a year long mild diarrhea after antibiotics, test showed nothing, the doctor prescribed stomach acid blocker for a month and it cured it permanently, but what was the underlying issue? Who the hell knows.
That happens in many countries. Usually gastro-enterologists have no idea how to treat it. I have it for 20 years. I recently discovered a doctor who knows about it, and treat it with some probiotics, such as Megasporebiotic or Restore Flora (contains the Saccharomyces boulardi), but... It goes really slow.
@zoe I would be a little careful with recommending a FODMAP diet before doing a restricted 5-6 week SIBO diet. The bad bacteria feeds off of sugars molecules, so you need to starve them first before you can introduce carbs back to your diet. The other issue is the variants of what a FODMAP diet is, even Monash University and NHS list would change, even pointing that bread was okay. I fixed my SIBO for 4 months by doing the restricted diet for 5 weeks. My fail in keeping my SIBO away was the lack of knowledge on how to maintain good gut health... this is where I believe the team at Zoe studies are really helpful. FODMAP list of carbs you can eat is IMO not going to work, Dr. Will Bulsiewicz concept of eating fiber makes sense, but you need linseed (flaxseed) and other non carb fibers to help aid the flow of the digestive system when going through the repair stage of SIBO.
I’m interested to know whether the protocol on Sacc Boulardii is the same as on antibiotic use or whether we can take it longer term. Is it something we need to cycle intermittently. I had the same sibo as you! Mine was treated with a biphasic diet and herbal anti biotics and it worked. Iwent through the hale clinic. Very expensive, but the nhs doesnt believe in sibo so i had no choice. By the way, the low fodmap diet was dreadful for me, i will never do low fodmap again. The bi phasic was good.
Well I had to deal with SIBO for nearly 1 year because first I was Methan dominant and after that was managed we saw a flatline but still symthoms so we treated hydrogen sulfite and that took a while. I acturally had to eat Fiber again and lowered my sulfate / sulfur intake. Sadly in most countrys the right medications and herbs are not so easy to get. I've had to pay so much for all my treatments... But at the end me and my doctor made it and now I can eat nearly everything. Important is to not relapse so I do a lot for my gut health and use resolor to stimulate my mms. works well. Thanks for your video - to much retriction is not good as well. My wife was prescribed "rifaximin" AntiB for hydrogen SIBO, which we read was more targeted at the Small Intestine, and we thus hoped wouldn't screw up an already probably damaged colon MicroBiome. - any comments on this thinking from the Zoe team ? Also, she had overactive thyroid for a long time, with "Carbmazole" as a medication. She was able to come of that slowly, and apart from going under-active for a short while, she is now stable - but could this have caused the SIBO in the first place ?
Chronic dental issues, root canals, implants that lead to hidden infections - not mentioned here as a possible cause. fiber will continue to feed these infections getting into the gut.
Would you recommend treating SIBO if I tested positive but don't have symptoms? I understand there is a likelihood of a false positive, but none of the reasons you suggested we're likely culprits for me. I tested positive for combined SIBO. I tested, in order to try and find route cause of hypothyroid / hashimotos. So, I guess that could be considered my symptom. But I have no gastric symptoms. I'm pretty sure I have low stomach acid - also no symptoms. I never take medicines. Very keen to leave no stone unturned, but treating for a condition with no symptoms is perplexing me.
I experienced Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) after years on a high-fiber diet, consisting mainly of Indian and Nepalese foods. The condition led to symptoms like fatigue, bloating, diarrhea, and severe weight loss. Switching to a carnivore diet rapidly alleviated the bloating and diarrhea, and within days, I saw significant improvements. Additionally, this dietary change meant I could stop taking my Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) medication (Methotrexate), as I no longer experienced inflammation or any other RA symptoms. Three months into the carnivore diet, I began reintroducing a small amount of carbohydrates, focusing on fermented vegetables and a few blueberries in my Greek yogurt. I continue to avoid grains, pasta, rice, and processed carbohydrates.
I experienced the same, I had to stop eating high fibre foods. I was vegetarian for years. Stuck to just eating meat and stopped the fruit and most veg, SIBO symptoms went away. I always ate white rice tho, seemed to help. I have now introduced all the fruit and veg back.
Gastroparesis is an issue with the muscle and or nerves responsible for allowing the stomach to release its contents into the small intestines, often food would be stucked or delayed in the stomach. Very interesting, but (once again!), zero mention of meat, fish, bone-broth, collagen etc as potentially helpful gut-healing foods. Repeated obsessional focus on “plant fibre”. Not always the answer…especially for those (older and younger) with current bowel disease…eg Crohn’s (as Will briefly mentions at 15:00).
Not to sound ignorant, but i probably will so sorry, but could the chrons or other bowel diseases actually be because the gut isnt getting enough of one of the primary energy source that is fibre? The western modern convenience long shelf life products we buy and eat everyday are severly lacking in fibre and other nutrients imperative for our health in general but our gut biome and gut lining more specifically. Does the chrons stop you eating gluten diary or other foods? or does the fact your gut biome has lost (or gained) bacteria somehow that breaks the food down too fast or slow that causes the bowel irritation that leads to a chrons or ibs diagnosis that then makes it so you cant eat the very thing ur body needs(but doesnt get as irrated your gut each time cuz the bacteria imbalance that you got somewhere along the way) in a more concise way, does the chrons cause your diet to be restricted or does a restricted diet cause the chrons because alot of people with ibs or chrons got it after they get ill or a long boit of stress and suddenly they start they start having reactions to these foods making it sound like the body rather then the food being the issue thus doctors saying dont eat this or that is a lazy way to avoid addressing your actual issue that causes or acts like chrons and ibs and other gut issues. Having ibs and being told i cant eat this or that was okay until i realised other health issues popped up and the advice was always eat "*food i cant eat*". I realised my health was getting worse even though my gut "felt" better. Also how will my gut biome ever be able to deal with the food that irrates my gut if i dont feed the very little bacteria thats left that can help me digest it? I feel like restricting diet is more like a painkiller or bandaid than it is a fix to the issue thus carry on and suffer the consequences of bloating and cramps in hopes it gets better. And fyi it has gotten a little better, not cured by any means but I can tolerate more than I could plus my health elswhere has benifited from the nutrition of a varied non restricted diet. Again sorry if this is ignorant, i know chrons is different and alot more severe than ibs but alot of these gut issues aswell as mental issues like depression and anxiety even are quite linked to inflammation and our diets are only getting less robust and less capable of keeping our guys healthy and thus causing them to get more inflamed more often. I think we should restrict the brands or methods like ultra processing of our foods rather than the food itself. For instance a study used an older strain of yeast to make bread and they found the bread affected people with gluten intolerance less than modern bread.

You’ve hit the nail on the head regarding removing ultra-processed foods as much as possible..and steadily building resilience makes total sense. Regarding ZOE; they do seem to have a tendency to “do down” meat though…particularly red meat. It’s a shame, because otherwise their info is usually sound. Many people with gut issues have healed their (sometimes life-threatening) illnesses by adopting an apparently very restrictive “carnivore” type diet. It sounds extreme, but there must be something going on that is worthy of further research…especially considering many advocates have managed to avoid further traumatic surgeries this way. And my own Father died young from complications following emergency surgery for a sudden, agonising Intestinal Adhesion. So I do also believe (which was hardly mentioned by Will) that there is a genetic factor to consider…as with many conditions. Thanks for your message…and hope your IBS carries on dwindling!

They probably have meat 3 times per day. Bacon, eggs and sausage for breakfast. Steak or burgers for lunch and for dinner, another steak or fish. When you consider the cause of heart disease (animal food products) and the cause of diabetes (saturated fats), and then you consider the foods required to reverse those conditions, which are plant based foods, it’s a pretty good indicator that animal food products have no place in our bodies. Don’t take my word for it, do your own research. Stay away from social media influencers who are paid by corporations to push misinformation and controversy. Listen to the actual experts in the field, the scientists who are not employed by big industry. Tell me, when was the last time you saw a sweet potato advertisement? What about a broccoli commercial? You are not going to see any advertisements on natural foods because there’s no monetary incentive to do so. All the money is in highly processed foods and drugs. Follow the money. When you see a person make a statement concerning food or drugs, ask, who is paying for that announcement?
I have both diverticulitis and IBS. The low Fodmap diet is not good with diverticulitis so I’m really getting down as I don’t know what to eat as it seems everything is upsetting my tummy. I can’t go out before noon as I’m constantly on and off the loo and often feel my bowel hasn’t emptied. Can anyone help please

I have IBS, got good success with probiotic Pro EM-1 available on Amazon. I met the doctor who developed this in Hawaii developed with Japanese doctors. He is throwing live bacteria into polluted alawai canal on Oahu and its working. After one month I don’t taken it every day now. Menopause also messes with digestion.

While not officially diagnosed with SIBO, have the symptoms. We tried S.Boulardi on top of lowfodmap diet and had severe reaction of belching and bloating. Dang. Used Pure Encapsulation brand and only 1/2 therapeutic dose. It was only thing that changed as our diet has been same for a year- oatmeal waffles and potatoes oil free lowfat plant based. So lost trying to help my son put on weight but he can't eat.

Possible reasons for small intestine gas/pain or SIBO quoted here failed to include ‘eating disorder’. I had 10 years of bulimia and really struggled, over the recovering years, with hellish gut pain. If this is your issue then try simply not eating any carbohydrates or plants for a while. Your gut can then begin to heal.

You need to learn a little bit more about the gut, and I suggest you watch this channel and especially this doctor. What ever you have learned up until now is wrong information. Healthy gut bacteria feeds on fiber. Lack of fiber causes healthy gut bacteria to starve and allows harmful bacteria to overgrow causing all kinds of problems. Harmful gut bacteria feeds on sugar like pizza, pasta, bread and other sugars. This not only causes fatty liver and obesity but other problems as well.
First of all, the body runs on sugar (glucose), not protein or fats. Even when people eat only protein, the body converts the protein into carbohydrates but at a slower pace. The body will also convert the excess protein into carbohydrates and then into fat. The waste by product of consuming protein is nitrogen which can ruin your kidneys. Speak with people who rely on dialysis machines every week. Ask them what happened to their kidneys. We (humans) are not designed to process a lot of protein. You are suggesting that people stay away from plant foods and yet, what they have left is protein and fats. What do you think causes diabetes? It’s not sugar, but saturated fats. Scientists have been using coconut oil to make laboratory mice and other animals diabetic in order to study diabetes. Saturated fats plug up the cells and makes it harder for insulin to enter and do its job. Saturated fats are in all animal products and in some plant products like coconut oil. Yet, remarkably, the only foods that reverse cardiovascular disease and diabetes is whole plant foods.
I had SIBO, and did that god awful breath test. Mine was treated with herbal anti biotics and it worked. I felt a lot better once it had gone. I dont do well with fiber, and that fodmap diet is rubbish, sorry. Been there, done that.

Very interesting, I did a breath test which showed Hydrogen SIBO....but I had quite a lot of contradictive info on what to eat 2 days prior......the only clear thing was the 12 hour fasting......I was not allowed to exercise or sleep during these breath test moments.....that I did know......I've now been referred to a gastrologist. I was told it is most likely due to a Salmonella poisoning I apparently had..... Not that I noticed having that then....But it's been going downhill since had Covid......my bowels were really affected then too.......Also I'd like to know if it can be caused by the (peri)menospause or worsen during that time?
Have you been checked for H Pylori? Often proliferates post covid, causes stomach ulcers and gastritis, 80% of people have it, many asymptomatic, NHS is very lax in testing for it. Alters the PH in the stomach, causes malabsorption and can even turn to stomach cancer!
It seems that the probiotic saccharomyces boulardii is extremely useful for gut health in many cases. Saw the other podcast where Doc Will asked Jonathan to take it to prevent a CDiff infection when he got prescribed antibiotics after he crushed his toe.

yes. It would be good to hear if the research studies that they quote have been disaggregated for sex, ie are the results different for women than men? I suspect that they are not. The only time they recognise the difference between male and female bodies seems to be when talking about health issues specific to some e.g. menopause. And yet hormones like oestrogen affect so much. In fact many medical studies do not include women because they're too 'complicated'.Come on ZOE disaggregate your data!

But I was referring to the speakers being predominantly male, rather than the potential result bias which has caused errors in unanticipated reactions for female patients/clients to date. I have enjoyed several Zoe presentations from female experts, but it is no way 50/50 male female Doctor/Professor presenters, so would encourage Jonathan and his team to redress the balance and make the effort to find more female experts to give their excellent talks.

And when you're killing of the bad guys, you're also killing off the good ones. It's my understanding the bad guys are tougher anyway.

you should get a H Pylori test, very common, causes stomach ulcers and eventually can turn nasty too. Goes long misdiagnosed.

Low stomach is much more common than high stomach acid, but they both have similar symptoms, so often the issue is mistakingly diagnosed as too much acid and then treated with acid blockers, which will make it all worse.
Having adequate amounts of stomach protect against invasive overgrowths of bacteria. I feel strongly there is a correlation between stomach acid levels and bacterial overgrowth.
You are right. The use of PPIs can cause SIBO.
In New zealand doctors do not ask the question why SIBO. In order to get the testing done I wanted I had to request the SIBO testing be done. A referral by my gastro professor was finally done. Even as a gastro professor he does not ask why I might have SIBO. He put the referral to have it done on my request because he doesn't know what is causing my diarehha and other abdominal issues and he made it clear he's not interested. A bile acid binder helped to stop the diarehha at least. Again I had to request such a test myself even when I don't actually have bile acid issues. Again the professor prescribed it and he said if it works use it. That is the appauling state of IBS treatment in NZ! Its simply perscribing off label medications to suppress symptoms. Over time such treatments make the underlying condition worse. And nobody asks why we have IBS and digestive issues in the first place!
That's what gastroenterologists do. I have had half a year long mild diarrhea after antibiotics, test showed nothing, the doctor prescribed stomach acid blocker for a month and it cured it permanently, but what was the underlying issue? Who the hell knows.

That happens in many countries. Usually gastro-enterologists have no idea how to treat it. I have it for 20 years. I recently discovered a doctor who knows about it, and treat it with some probiotics, such as Megasporebiotic or Restore Flora (contains the Saccharomyces boulardi), but... It goes really slow.

@zoe I would be a little careful with recommending a FODMAP diet before doing a restricted 5-6 week SIBO diet. The bad bacteria feeds off of sugars molecules, so you need to starve them first before you can introduce carbs back to your diet. The other issue is the variants of what a FODMAP diet is, even Monash University and NHS list would change, even pointing that bread was okay. I fixed my SIBO for 4 months by doing the restricted diet for 5 weeks. My fail in keeping my SIBO away was the lack of knowledge on how to maintain good gut health... this is where I believe the team at Zoe studies are really helpful. FODMAP list of carbs you can eat is IMO not going to work, Dr. Will Bulsiewicz concept of eating fiber makes sense, but you need linseed (flaxseed) and other non carb fibers to help aid the flow of the digestive system when going through the repair stage of SIBO.

I’m interested to know whether the protocol on Sacc Boulardii is the same as on antibiotic use or whether we can take it longer term. Is it something we need to cycle intermittently. Have you tried herbals and natural meds? Have you tried Mastic Gum? I have had great success w/ MG for any stomach issues. It also cures ulcers.
I had the same sibo as you! Mine was treated with a biphasic diet and herbal anti biotics and it worked. Iwent through the hale clinic. Very expensive, but the nhs doesnt believe in sibo so i had no choice. By the way, the low fodmap diet was dreadful for me, i will never do low fodmap again. The bi phasic was good.

Well I had to deal with SIBO for nearly 1 year because first I was Methan dominant and after that was managed we saw a flatline but still symthoms so we treated hydrogen sulfite and that took a while. I acturally had to eat Fiber again and lowered my sulfate / sulfur intake. Sadly in most countrys the right medications and herbs are not so easy to get. I've had to pay so much for all my treatments... But at the end me and my doctor made it and now I can eat nearly everything. Important is to not relapse so I do a lot for my gut health and use resolor to stimulate my mms. works well. Thanks for your video - to much retriction is not good as well. It could cause candida and problems in other areas of the gut which need fiber.

My wife was prescribed "rifaximin" AntiB for hydrogen SIBO, which we read was more targeted at the Small Intestine, and we thus hoped wouldn't screw up an already probably damaged colon MicroBiome. - any comments on this thinking from the Zoe team ? Also, she had overactive thyroid for a long time, with "Carbmazole" as a medication. She was able to come of that slowly, and apart from going under-active for a short while, she is now stable - but could this have caused the SIBO in the first place ?
Rifaximin actually helped me and while taking it I could eat more foods. Sadly I can no longer get it in the UK.

Chronic dental issues, root canals, implants that lead to hidden infections - not mentioned here as a possible cause. fiber will continue to feed these infections getting into the gut.

Is it possible that SIBO is linked to fibromyalgia ?
Would you recommend treating SIBO if I tested positive but don't have symptoms? I understand there is a likelihood of a false positive, but none of the reasons you suggested we're likely culprits for me.

I tested, in order to try and find route cause of hypothyroid / hashimotos. So, I guess that could be considered my symptom. But I have no gastric symptoms. I'm pretty sure I have low stomach acid - also no symptoms. I never take medicines.
Very keen to leave no stone unturned, but treating for a condition with no symptoms is perplexing me.
I experienced Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) after years on a high-fiber diet, consisting mainly of Indian and Nepalese foods. The condition led to symptoms like fatigue, bloating, diarrhea, and severe weight loss. Switching to a carnivore diet rapidly alleviated the bloating and diarrhea, and within days, I saw significant improvements. Additionally, this dietary change meant I could stop taking my Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) medication (Methotrexate), as I no longer experienced inflammation or any other RA symptoms.
Three months into the carnivore diet, I began reintroducing a small amount of carbohydrates, focusing on fermented vegetables and a few blueberries in my Greek yogurt. I continue to avoid grains, pasta, rice, and processed carbohydrates.
I experienced the same, I had to stop eating high fibre foods. I was vegetarian for years. Stuck to just eating meat and stopped the fruit and most veg, SIBO symptoms went away. I always ate white rice tho, seemed to help. I have now introduced all the fruit and veg back.

Gastroparesis is a gut emptying issue. SIBO is a bacteria overgrowth issue. If I understood him correctly Gastroparesis could possibly cause SIBO.
Gastroparesis is an issue with the muscle and or nerves responsible for allowing the stomach to release its contents into the small intestines, often food would be stucked or delayed in the stomach.
SIBO is bacteria that colonized the Small Intestine where they eat your food, produce gas and released byproduct often toxic into the bloodstream causing whole bunch of issues like inflammation, brain fog and food intolerances.

Very interesting, but (once again!), zero mention of meat, fish, bone-broth, collagen etc as potentially helpful gut-healing foods. Repeated obsessional focus on “plant fibre”. Not always the answer…especially for those (older and younger) with current bowel disease…eg Crohn’s (as Will briefly mentions at 15:00).

Not to sound ignorant, but i probably will so sorry, but could the chrons or other bowel diseases actually be because the gut isnt getting enough of one of the primary energy source that is fibre? The western modern convenience long shelf life products we buy and eat everyday are severly lacking in fibre and other nutrients imperative for our health in general but our gut biome and gut lining more specifically. Does the chrons stop you eating gluten diary or other foods? or does the fact your gut biome has lost (or gained) bacteria somehow that breaks the food down too fast or slow that causes the bowel irritation that leads to a chrons or ibs diagnosis that then makes it so you cant eat the very thing ur body needs(but doesnt get as irrated your gut each time cuz the bacteria imbalance that you got somewhere along the way) in a more concise way, does the chrons cause your diet to be restricted or does a restricted diet cause the chrons because alot of people with ibs or chrons got it after they get ill or a long boit of stress and suddenly they start they start having reactions to these foods making it sound like the body rather then the food being the issue thus doctors saying dont eat this or that is a lazy way to avoid addressing your actual issue that causes or acts like chrons and ibs and other gut issues.
Having ibs and being told i cant eat this or that was okay until i realised other health issues popped up and the advice was always eat "*food i cant eat*". I realised my health was getting worse even though my gut "felt" better. Also how will my gut biome ever be able to deal with the food that irrates my gut if i dont feed the very little bacteria thats left that can help me digest it? I feel like restricting diet is more like a painkiller or bandaid than it is a fix to the issue thus carry on and suffer the consequences of bloating and cramps in hopes it gets better.
And fyi it has gotten a little better, not cured by any means but I can tolerate more than I could plus my health elswhere has benifited from the nutrition of a varied non restricted diet.
Again sorry if this is ignorant, i know chrons is different and alot more severe than ibs but alot of these gut issues aswell as mental issues like depression and anxiety even are quite linked to inflammation and our diets are only getting less robust and less capable of keeping our guys healthy and thus causing them to get more inflamed more often. I think we should restrict the brands or methods like ultra processing of our foods rather than the food itself. For instance a study used an older strain of yeast to make bread and they found the bread affected people with gluten intolerance less than modern bread.

You’ve hit the nail on the head regarding removing ultra-processed foods as much as possible..and steadily building resilience makes total sense. Regarding ZOE; they do seem to have a tendency to “do down” meat though…particularly red meat. It’s a shame, because otherwise their info is usually sound. Many people with gut issues have healed their (sometimes life-threatening) illnesses by adopting an apparently very restrictive “carnivore” type diet. It sounds extreme, but there must be something going on that is worthy of further research…especially considering many advocates have managed to avoid further traumatic surgeries this way. And my own Father died young from complications following emergency surgery for a sudden, agonising Intestinal Adhesion. So I do also believe (which was hardly mentioned by Will) that there is a genetic factor to consider…as with many conditions. Thanks for your message…and hope your IBS carries on dwindling!

They don’t help but make things worse. If you live in America then most likely you live on the American diet. Most Americans don’t live on a plant based diet or eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. They probably have meat 3 times per day. Bacon, eggs and sausage for breakfast. Steak or burgers for lunch and for dinner, another steak or fish. When you consider the cause of heart disease (animal food products) and the cause of diabetes (saturated fats), and then you consider the foods required to reverse those conditions, which are plant based foods, it’s a pretty good indicator that animal food products have no place in our bodies. Don’t take my word for it, do your own research. Stay away from social media influencers who are paid by corporations to push misinformation and controversy. Listen to the actual experts in the field, the scientists who are not employed by big industry.

I have both diverticulitis and IBS. The low Fodmap diet is not good with diverticulitis so I’m really getting down as I don’t know what to eat as it seems everything is upsetting my tummy. I can’t go out before noon as I’m constantly on and off the loo and often feel my bowel hasn’t emptied. Can anyone help please

I have IBS, got good success with probiotic Pro EM-1 available on Amazon. I met the doctor who developed this in Hawaii developed with Japanese doctors. He is throwing live bacteria into polluted alawai canal on Oahu and its working. After one month I don’t taken it every day now. Menopause also messes with digestion.
A colonoscopy showed severe diverticulitis and the consultant said also IBS but didn’t say which type and I didn’t know there was more than one type?

Long recovery & alot more detail but id look at more research for severe diverticulitis
I have symptoms of Trimethylaminuria (TMAU) fish odour syndrome - awaiting the results of a blood test after 9 months.

While not officially diagnosed with SIBO, have the symptoms. We tried S.Boulardi on top of lowfodmap diet and had severe reaction of belching and bloating. Dang. Used Pure Encapsulation brand and only 1/2 therapeutic dose. It was only thing that changed as our diet has been same for a year- oatmeal waffles and potatoes oil free lowfat plant based. So lost trying to help my son put on weight but he can't eat.

Constipation could cause SIBO, but SIBO can cause constipation.

Possible reasons for small intestine gas/pain or SIBO quoted here failed to include ‘eating disorder’. I had 10 years of bulimia and really struggled, over the recovering years, with hellish gut pain. If this is your issue then try simply not eating any carbohydrates or plants for a while. Your gut can then begin to heal.

You need to learn a little bit more about the gut, and I suggest you watch this channel and especially this doctor. What ever you have learned up until now is wrong information. Healthy gut bacteria feeds on fiber. Lack of fiber causes healthy gut bacteria to starve and allows harmful bacteria to overgrow causing all kinds of problems. Harmful gut bacteria feeds on sugar like pizza, pasta, bread and other sugars. This not only causes fatty liver and obesity but other problems as well.
First of all, the body runs on sugar (glucose), not protein or fats. Even when people eat only protein, the body converts the protein into carbohydrates but at a slower pace. The body will also convert the excess protein into carbohydrates and then into fat. The waste by product of consuming protein is nitrogen which can ruin your kidneys. Speak with people who rely on dialysis machines every week. Ask them what happened to their kidneys. We (humans) are not designed to process a lot of protein. You are suggesting that people stay away from plant foods and yet, what they have left is protein and fats.
What do you think causes diabetes? It’s not sugar, but saturated fats. Scientists have been using coconut oil to make laboratory mice and other animals diabetic in order to study diabetes. Saturated fats plug up the cells and makes it harder for insulin to enter and do its job. Saturated fats are in all animal products and in some plant products like coconut oil.
Yet, remarkably, the only foods that reverse cardiovascular disease and diabetes is whole plant foods.

I had SIBO, and did that god awful breath test. Mine was treated with herbal anti biotics and it worked. I felt a lot better once it had gone. I dont do well with fiber, and that fodmap diet is rubbish, sorry. Been there, done that.

Very interesting, I did a breath test which showed Hydrogen SIBO....but I had quite a lot of contradictive info on what to eat 2 days prior......the only clear thing was the 12 hour fasting......I was not allowed to exercise or sleep during these breath test moments.....that I did know......I've now been referred to a gastrologist. I was told it is most likely due to a Salmonella poisoning I apparently had..... Not that I noticed having that then....But it's been going downhill since had Covid......my bowels were really affected then too.......Also I'd like to know if it can be caused by the (peri)menospause or worsen during that time?
Have you been checked for H Pylori? Often proliferates post covid, causes stomach ulcers and gastritis, 80% of people have it, many asymptomatic, NHS is very lax in testing for it. Alters the PH in the stomach, causes malabsorption and can even turn to stomach cancer!

yes. It would be good to hear if the research studies that they quote have been disaggregated for sex, ie are the results different for women than men? I suspect that they are not. The only time they recognise the difference between male and female bodies seems to be when talking about health issues specific to some e.g. menopause. And yet hormones like oestrogen affect so much. In fact many medical studies do not include women because they're too 'complicated'.Come on ZOE disaggregate your data!

But I was referring to the speakers being predominantly male, rather than the potential result bias which has caused errors in unanticipated reactions for female patients/clients to date. I have enjoyed several Zoe presentations from female experts, but it is no way 50/50 male female Doctor/Professor presenters, so would encourage Jonathan and his team to redress the balance and make the effort to find more female experts to give their excellent talks.
