At some point I stopped watching the construction and just watched the family dynamic. I always built with my dad and he passed in September. This brought me right back to the fun ribbing. Thank you.

I bought a house 8 months ago and renovated it. I knew nothing about fixing a house but thanks to you, I was able to finish my basement and redo the bathroom. It has taken a huge toll on my mental health but seeing my reno is almost done makes me keep going. Thanks Jeff! Glad to see Matt helping as well! One day he will have his own channel haha

I never comment on TH-cam videos, but I’ve got to say, after watching a ton of your videos over the past year it’s really refreshing to see that sometimes even the professionals screw up every once in a while. Makes me feel better about my own diy projects when things don’t quite work out.

Yes it's great working with family, but sometimes tension and too much spending time can cause extreme frustration. It's wonderful to see you two working better together. It's the same concept with working with your spouse. My husband and I worked together for a small time and then had to go home together. We love each other, but it's healthy to have small breaks. Love your content and family dynamic!! ❤️

As my Dad says. Family is like fish. Ok to have around for a few days but after that it starts to stink. Sometimes we just gotta laugh at the suck.
I love watching projects and learning, this channel is wonderful. You see the mistakes as they happen and the critical thinking on how to resolve the issue. I’ve subscribed. Have to say the style of shooting is so professional, this could easily become a tv show.

I think everyone who has ever worked with family can relate to this situation. Just remember you may love someone 100% of the time but that doesn't mean you have to like them 100% of the time too.

I think you need to let Matt be the project lead on one of these? Being a young man but having to constantly listen/take instructions from your dad must be difficult. In the episode it sounds like it was just a number of equally valid options. Nothing will go so badly that it can't be fixed and it could be good for him to take on a bit more responsibility.
Ha ha ha ha! Its 1:10 am Vegas time...what a great video! Loved watching dad n son fighting and seeing things so differently. My 18 twin boys wanna argue just about everything from the moon and the sun, stars and food and life! I had my nephew and one of my twins help me tonight to remove 12 x12 pavers as im preparing to build a 10x 14 shed. So much fun making them work when they totally wanted to be on their computer gaming! 🤣😅😆😁

I can't believe how close to the ground you're putting that particle board! I've got a garage with wood right on the slab like that, three corners have rot from rain and the fourth has termites!

Enjoy all your videos and style. Your mistake reminds me of the story my grandfather told me as a kid while I shadowed him around with house projects . A foreman needed to hire a carpenter. He asked the first candidate: "Do you ever make mistakes?" "No sir", he replied.
He asked the 2nd candidate: "Do you ever make mistakes?" "Not often but, when I do, I know how to fix them". The foreman chose the 2nd candidate.
I plan on building this massive shed to be my future work shop. The size is just right. Thanks and keep up the good work!

You were 100% right about sheathing first.
awesome structure! the pad looked small when it was bare, with the walls it really looks so much bigger. Also, I had to do the same thing, shortening the front wall of my little lean-to shed, not due to mistake, but due to husband changing his mind on the height. After we put the front and back walls up, we leaned a couple rafters on top and stood back where the deck will be, and he decided he wanted the shed a foot shorter so as not to block as much view. I was annoyed, but I just shut my mouth and went about the same process you did - brace the studs, cut off the top, and replace the top plate in the new position. Cheers!

I love your videos! I been watching them for a long time. I dont know so much about construction but with your videos have been a great help and inspiration. I dont think I ever saw an episode of you working with your family but this is the reason why many young people watch your videos. The relationship father to son was never there so people look for other guidance like your video. Sad to see the lack of patience. Reminds me of working with my dad. I rather watch youtube videos and do it my self to work with people that think they can talk to you any kind of way. Sucks to see its the same in your home.

Pro tip:
To get your walls level before sheeting:
Option 1: drive steaks into the ground, level walls then nail braces to the steaks and the wall corners.....then sheet around until you get to the braces knock them off and you will be good.
Option 2: take cut off peices and tap-con them to the concrete. Then cut braces, level walls and nail braces to wall and the tap-coned piece on the floor. This will leave holes in concrete but very minimal. If it's a big deal use the first method.
Or just square it on the ground and sheets it then lift literally what every person does today

If it's 16 on center, why do you put an "X" to the left? Wouldn't you just center your stud on the 16" line you made?
You are measuring off the end of your base plate not the center of the first stud so the x he’s marking is where the stud will land the line is where the edge of the stud will be
@@chrisd8163 Ok, I was assuming the first 2x4 was considered a stud, but it’s actually called a base plate? If so then that makes sense that the line he makes is the edge instead of the center.
Hello, great job! How many inches are you supposed to put the sheathing off of the cement slab? Is it flush with the bottom 2x6 & 2x4? Thank you for showing the mistakes that happen so I can apply it to my future mistakes happening 🥰☺️

I can’t believe that you cut the bolt , out like that , doesn’t that defeat the purpose of having a bolt , lol and during layout , you should mark 15”1/4 and x ahead so your first sheet isn’t a cut !

No. The red boxes are where the center of the stud is but you should be marking 3/4" less at 15 1/4". That is to the edge of the stud, which gives you 16" OC.

Looks great! I was curious why the OSB was hanging over the edge. What was the rationale behind that technique?
When I build i just start putting wood to screws lol. I never worry about how this is level or this is square. I just wing it and it usually comes out good. I built my own house not knowing anything but watched a few YT videos. One thing I learned when your working with wood and see something that is not right after you can figure out a way to make it not so bad lol

You are missing your top plate which is what you would use to square it.
:) 7:05 Just using 3/4" spade bit or forstner for bolt to get through 2x6 should do the trick :)

3,4,5 rule. find a corner mark off 3' on a top plate in one direction, mark off 4' on the other direction and it should be 5' diagonally to complete the triangle.
Oh Jeff - I know you're old school but eye protection when cutting that wood. :)
I wonder if tripling up the top plate of the first wall to bring it up to 8'6" like the second wall would have been easier than cutting down all the studs of the second wall. It probably depends on whether all the other walls had already been cut down once and if you had the 2x6s to spare.
I was about to say the same, I would just triple it and forget about it lol. or maybe other measurement done would been wrong so it was easier to just cut it.
Would have been easier to just lay it down and fix it before he nailed it to the wall already in place. Regardless, it's nice to see he shows mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes..

I noticed you put a roll up door on this shed but it was missing the tensioner on the door. That's why you were having so much trouble but you can't unroll it until it's all put together.
The mismatched wall heights made me just roll. I did the same thing with my shelving in the basement /facepalm
Have any idea how many times I have grabbed a certain tool to attempt to do a certain task and 5 seconds in said the exact thing of “well that is stupid” and then moved on to the next tool? Refreshing to know this doesn’t only happen to a novice DIYer.

Even though it’s a shed, doesn’t your roof/snow load still flex the window (on the long load bearing wall) at the top because there’s no vertical lintel/header over the opening???

I take it the ceiling line was above the knee wall with the small windows, if so, how was that wall braced at the out of plane hinge between the knee wall and the full height wall? Just curious, because usually there are king studs running all the way up to the roof or ceiling diaphragm.

Thanks for your feedback. Life isnt always perfect but I think its important we show how it goes. If someone wants to do a renovation of this scale they need to know the physical and emotional tolls it can take. A job like this can break a person.

Where did you get your windows? I’m building a similar shed this summer and want the same type of windows.
Why did you use osb outside? .not vertikal? And before build on the wall. Much easier. And diagonals are correct.

You need to build the corners, run strings, and measure each stud. No slab is perfectly level.

blue is sealed for water protection. red is just painted as a marker of the product
