Just made my shims models soooo much easier to manage! Had no idea that there were string formatting capabilities. With a linked spreadsheet, you can also include formulas in the mix so for example, the text only ever gets so big or formatting changes based on other parameters.
Oh, if only I had this video a couple of weeks ago! I struggled to do this sort of thing, although eventually succeeded after reading various forum posts and other material (it took me three separate sessions to get it). I used a spreadsheet (as another commenter mentions), which also allowed me to put a maximum size on the text. Although you can do a lot of things in FreeCad, it's often very unclear _how_ to achieve those things. It shouldn't be that hard.
Ah what a shame, normally I have a habit of just releasing a video and viewers jump in and say 'you must of read my mind! I only just started thinking about how to do this yesterday!'. My Spidey senses must of checkout early for Christmas lol. Glad you got it resolved though. I know what you mean regarding about things being unclear. I just spent two days on and off trying to figure out how to use a newer operation with virtually no documentation. Got there in the end so I better make a video on it to save other people going through the same pain. Have a great festive break.
@@MangoJellySolutions You may be interested in part of my problem and solution. I was printing blocks of different sizes (different in one dimension only), and putting text on two sides, one being the side where the size could be different. I couldn't put text on that side when it was very small, so I also wanted to not have that text in such cases. I found (from looking online) that if you go to the Data tab of the pocket and 'show hidden' properties, then right-click on the 'visibility' property you could create an expression for that (which I linked to the spreadsheet where there was a formula for that).
This video is great! Thank you very much! I'm new to Free CAD and was trying to find solution for this problem and today your video just pop up to my screen and voala - just what I was searching for. Amesing!
Ah excellent news :) Welcome to the journey :) Can I ask what your building that you needed it for. I always like to get real world applications and see what people are using the videos for, there has been some wild and funky things of late!
@@MangoJellySolutions I'm working on woodworking jig - it is round corner jig with different radius on fillets. Now using variable I can change the radius very esaly. I will upload my models on MakerWorld so the people will be able to change radius according they're wishes. I use Free CAD for my hobby woodworking shop. Thank you again for your tutorials!
hello MangoJelly :) I've seen you're making boxes for electronic PCBs. Hier is a tip for new video. KiCAD allows to expert PCB as step file and FreeCAD can import that step file. That way you can easily make PCB box. Cheers :)

Has anyone else experienced issues with padding a shapestring, then going back and editing it, and then having only the first character show up in the pad?
Have you tried that with different fonts? The font might be missing the characters you are using or has glyphs made out of multiple wires instead of a single outline. These are usually my main issues with a shapestring.
Wow...I am amazed about the possibilities in FC and your skills... amazing resource.
really usefull! For the other watchers: the "Size" determines the height of the capital Letters if I remember correctly.
Wow, love it! This video is short, but it is PACKED! So much useful info that I would have never found out by myself! Thanks so much Mr Mango! :)
Pleasure :) This was quite a fun one to make glad its full of good stuff :)

Ah great to hear you made use of it already :) :). Nice idea with the spreadsheet! :) :)

As always an incredibly helpful and well explained video!
Thank you so much :)
Lovely! Thank you for showing us this FreeCAD trick. :)
Glad to help :)
Merry Christmas MangoDarren. Knowing the %-style formatting exists opens up... possibilities!
And a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you :) :)

Thanks for adding that, I would love to integrate these together in a tutorial at some point. Thanks for the idea 👍👍👍👍
Another use case ... Name tags on a standard size tag, scales the name. The data could come in from a spreadsheet. The write the GCode to cut on a CNC
I like it :) :) :)

A weakness of FC as it is missing a strajght forward method of embossing text, a common CAD requirement implemented in many other CAD packages.
select plane tyyy
to add the mm to the text, wouldn't it be easier to multiply by 1mm?
That should work as well.
I don't know, but if it does that would be a quicker solution. Thanks, going to have to try this now :)
@@MangoJellySolutions old trick from css to convert any plain number into unit you need and have used it many times in FreeCAD as well.
