  • In FreeCAD, the Align tool stands out as a versatile and indispensable feature available across all workbenches including Part, Part Design, Draft, and more. This powerful tool streamlines the alignment process for various elements such as shapes, sketches, edges, faces, and reference images.
Imagine you're designing a house and need to trace a set of tiles from a reference image onto a sketch aligned with the roof. Typically, this would involve importing the image and manually adjusting its position. However, with FreeCAD's Align tool, you can accomplish this task effortlessly in mere seconds.
Discover the effectiveness of the Align tool in action by watching this video demonstration. See how it seamlessly aligns 3D models, components of a 2D plan, and reference images, making complex alignments a breeze.

I had no idea freecad could do this. I've struggled with this so much. Very cool!

Hope it's of use. Yes it's a bit of a hidden tool to be honest, you wouldn't expect it to be on the edit menu.

Thank you for that, very interesting, appreciate the time you put into these videos. I am working my way thru one of your playlists, and appreciate how you show the pitfalls that one can encounter. I was working on the solid mirroring, and how to use a center reference with two "features". It takes me some time to see where you lead the student, but after many repeats, I get there. Thank you, I've really grown to appreciate FreeCAD this past year...

Thank you so much for the kind feedback, I always wonder how people are finding these videos as a whole and feedback like this really helps me judge what I need to include. Thank you, glad your enjoying.

The transform tool is long overdue for an upgrade. Minimally to be able to set a new position. Blender does this very well allowing you to choose a point, origin, etc. as the new location for the transform.

Thanks so much for another great video! I've learnt so much by following your 'FreeCAD 0.20 / 0.21 For Beginners Tutorials' playlist! After watching 30+ videos of yours, may I please make a small suggestion from a newbie's perspective - when you apply a function or switch to a particular workbench, would you please briefly explain what it does or why we use it? For example, in this video, what does Upgrade/Downgrade do and in what other situations would I use it? Why did you say "for this part we have to use the Draft workbench" and not an alternative workbench? Thank you! 😄

The world needs a tool to take a 2d drawing and generate the model.

@@sirmongoose An actual isometric drawing. Otherwise known as a blueprint. Can't believe I had to explain that.

I would have thought there would be an option to simply move the origin point of an object. I used to use SketchUp before it when cloud-only and you could just chose the command and then click on the new origin point, then the X axis would rubber-band to you mouse cursor so you could snap it to another part of the object, then the Z axis would rubber-band to your cursor so you could snap that axis to some other point. (You could snap to points to put the part origin axis on that point or snap to edges/global axis to align the part axis to that line.)

It seems a bit tedious but maybe aligning inn3D just can’t be simpler.

I love your videos and love supporting you, this is great stuff. But I think it's better to have ask for support and money at the end. I always have to skip videos on TH-cam that ask for compliment before I know whether they actually caught my attention .Hopefully that's not a terrible suggestion.

Unfortunately that doesn't work vs asking at the beginning. Most viewers drop by the end

Good vid, but I dont get why. I have had it often in the past when imported solids have an origin miles away, and it can really mess up manipulation of an assembly, timestamp 2:25. Posted for algo 👍😂. Not a criticism.

Yes I was thinking exactly the same thing until I saw a professional assembly and how it was being used. The assembly in question was a full car suspension assembly and the person who was working on it was exporting out the parts from the assembly. That's where the penny dropped. The center of origin was at the center of the wheel base. So each time a part was exported out, the part inherited this centre of origin. So if a brake calibre was exported out its center was the center of the wheel base of the vehicle. Thus a 4 meter wheel base caused the brake calibre center to be 2 meters away. They should of been exporting out the original part. If I hadn't of seen him using it I would never of known. Glad you enjoyed the video.
