Sorry, that is absolutely not the way to do this. There is only one component fixed (your first block). The joint type you're looking for is distance. By default it is 0. So your small box would need three distance joints and you're done. No over-constraining either!
Are you having any troubles in the assembly workbench? I am but I'm new to FreeCad. My professional experience is in Inventor and SW so I know parametric CAD. It seems buggy.
