Completely agree with Michael I think the movie couldn’t have come out at a better time given recent events. Not just for its messages, but just the pure joy and enjoyment of seeing it.
John I appreciate you so much. You saw Cynthia's tears. You understood what they were trying to convey. You are such an compassionate man. Keep being you.
@@aprilnewell5434 my theory is that the wiz is before wicked and it about Nessa and elphbia mother when she was young , what you think and the Easter egg where she sing be a lion is a reference to her daughter who was green
On The Graham Norton Show, Cynthia talks about singing *live* while doing her own flying stunts and simultaneously wearing a corset. Because she wasn't standing on the ground & her ribcage was restricted during that song, she couldn't use her diaphragm, so had to use other vocal techniques to project her powerful voice. Impressive.
I've seen it twice now. Absolutely remarkable. I'm going to try and be patient and not spoil the remainder of the story, and wait for part 2 next year. Love your conversation
I think that the movie just makes those close ups so much more intimate with the characters compared to broadway musicals. When you watch the broadway, you’re not quite there with them because you’re far away from them. I saw the broadway musical and the seats were far away. But with the movie, you can be there with them and understand what they’re coming from. I think that’s what makes it so special
I just got out of the theater and I didn’t think I was going to agree as much as I do with John’s review. Cynthia Erivo stole the show. You were right in your assessment of the movie. My daughters both loved it!
With Elphabas dad being mean to his daughter, behind that anger is hurt and betrayal from knowing deep down hife wife cheated on him and thats not his real daughter. The actor that played him did a great job of showing that emotion through his look in his eyes.
🙌🏽💚💚💖💖 Love it more than I thought!! Can’t wait for part 2. Ariana Grande stole every scene she was in!! Cynthia amazing in her performance as Elphaba!!Agree with Vogel “For Good” will be emotional in part 2!! Always entertaining you 3!!
I need John to watch the videos of them talking about how they executed Dancing Through Life and maybe he will like it more because I thought that sequence was just AMAZING (and I loved pretty much all of the other musical numbers as well lol)
oh, i was so hoping the Buddies would cover this masterpiece of a film! came for Michael's praises, but was so happy to hear how much Rocha loved it, too! and rolled my eyes at Shannon's takes no more than i usually do, so i consider that a win as well! ;) thank y'all for embracing and elevating ALL corners of geekery, and for championing the deeper meanings embedded into these stories!
When they sing What is this Feeling, and Galinda's line 'rise above it' and when the camera went up with her hand, I thought that was brilliant character and director choice
I'm honestly so excited for part 2, in large part because I feel like the fact that they split it into two will give a lot more space for the act 2 material to be fleshed out more! I was so impressed with how the long run time for Part 1 really allowed the story to breath, and I think that will benefit Part 2 even more. Act 2 of the stage show is good, but I think a lot of the elements that are there will be even better with a little more time to let the characters' journeys cook. Without giving anything away, there are definitely elements where I'm like "yeah, this will work better in the movie if they can show a bit more passage of time and really let things build". Because some of the side characters are pretty underwritten in the show too, but I think Part 2 will allow them to rectify that a bit and make the pay off of their arcs even stronger!
All your insights are so good! I loved how you related personally and emotionally but also with some objectivity and thought to the story and the characters.
Sadly, Wicked won’t come to my neck of the woods until spring 2025 and I’ve never had the chance to see the stage production so I’m just leaving a comment here for the algos and avoiding any spoilers for later.
Movie was wonderful !perhaps the best movie musical ever made! It will become as iconic as Wizard of Oz ! Never once did I think it was too long- it was over too soon
Ariana reminded me of Amy Adams as a Princess in Enchanted (the first one) like she stepped out of animation cell into real life, with all the mannerisms, hand, pinkie work. Outstanding. Amy was robbed an Oscar nomination for that role but I don't think the Academy will ignore Wicked, at all. I also would love to see a comedy role win an award
I don’t mind it, but Ariana’s Glinda is absolutely Chenoweth’s. At least, that is how it appears to me. I’ve never read the script but I’ve seen the show and clips online and it is a very similar performance with the hair flipping and all. I have a feeling that Chenoweth adlibbed all of that, and it became cannon to the show for everyone who came after. But I can’t be sure. I think a lot of the praise for Ariana’s comedic timing is a direct result of Chenoweth. Again, not a bad thing. You can’t go wrong paying homage to an amazing performer.
@@ChaseWulff I think that is written into the character. There's a scene where she tries to teach Elphaba how to do it. Chenoweth was the first to bring it to life and gave an iconic performance against which all others are measured.
I agree, I've always adored Dancing Through Life!! And I also thought Jonathan Bailey made Fiyero way more interesting and immediately engaging as a character than I've ever found him in the show 😊LIke, the lyrics of Dancing Through Life have always been there as has Elphaba clocking that he's not actually that shallow and self absorbed but actually quite unhappy, and yet the film version was the first time I really *felt* that with Fiyero and was invested in wanting to get to know more about him! Plus the obvious fact that Jonathan Bailey just has chemistry with literally everyone ever :) (Also LOOOL at the misunderstanding about him being gay irl and mistaking him for Ethan Slater/Boq with Ariana 😂 Heck, even in the movie he definitely plays FIyero with big bisexual energy! Hence, again, the flirting and having chemistry with absolutely every person)
John, Bok's infatuation with Galinda is evident from the beginning, through the library scene, into the Ozdust ballroom... and I was unfamiliar with the characters. I am sure you'll reconsider when you see it again.
His interest is obvious at the school opening thing, but everyone is watching her so it just gets lumped in with everyone else's looks. The library is when you see his obsession, but it comes out of nowhere and them he's pawned off on Nessa. They did not do a good job of laying the groundwork for it.
The only thing that didn’t hit for me was the end of The Wizard and I. A beautiful and energetic song sung so powerfully and the surroundings are sad, beige wheat fields and a desert. What was on the screen and what was being sung just did not line up. At all. Other than that, this movie really hit the nail on the head and I will be going to see it again.
I had problems with the film, but overall the message was conflicting to me because thia clearly is a race metaphor and thats why the cast Cynthia Erivo but it really rubbed me the wrong way that all her iconography is given to her by the blond girl, she gives her the hat, the removes the glasses, she gives her the cape, she might as well given her the broomstick, she even throws her a pair of ruby slippers in that makeover number and just rubbed me the wrong way.
@@adamjimenez9003 lol if you think that’s the only reason they cast Cynthia Erivo, I’m assuming you’re just not familiar with her nor her body of work.
@ I interpreted it differently as the movie wants to put across the message of being yourself and not being afraid of being ‘othered’. That can be because of race, being queer, just feeling different from other people for a number of reasons. Not sure how Glenda being an ally would rub one the wrong way, but go off lol.
