If you would ever feel the need for offering an My Deep Device with your My Deep Connect Subscription, I would immediately subscribe. In other words: I agree 100% with your analysis and your suggestion. Great video
I have no issue with the subcsription model either. What would have made sense was to offer everything we had initially for free and offer a subscription model with extra tools. I am happy to pay for new features such as new templates, new tools, new shapes, new brushes etc.
The thing that surprises me most is how involved the company is in the features. I thought that the functions (aside from cloud storage) were via WiFi between my tablet and my computer. It would make much more sense to have the Dropbox/Drive integration replace their cloud storage and disconnect the remarkable device from reMarkable servers in the no subscription situation. This shouldn't affect email/handwriting recognition etc. It's annoying to pay $200 for a Dropbox subscription plus $100 for access to it.
I think actually they could have cut a deal with dropbox and get paid by using it as their cloud service, and it would be beneficial to dropbox and everyone else too.
Absolutely agree. Dropbox for me was an incredible tool. Incredibly though now it has become a paid for use model i am finding so many other users are no longer with it which detracts in convenience my way of having it plus that some auto-functions i used also out of sheer convenience are blocked & the to have to pay regularly on top of already paying for it just doesn't seem to be sensible...
They would have lost control of their platform and the ability to introduce a charge. How do Boox manage as a company, much bigger company and more expensive products?
@@contemplatingangel so if you want direct integration, forget remarkable and go supernote? Is that what you're saying? Super note integration is direct, immediate, convenient and brilliant.
I vote for Voya to become the CEO of reMarkable. At a minimum put him on the board of directors. I'm not joking. This is what reMarkable needs to do in order to survive.
I'd consider coming in as a consultant, for a fixed amount of hours. Stepping into a mess like this? No thanks, I'd rather play with my kittens, make music, take walks, listen to books and take photos of the night sky :)
One of the most frequent words you’ve used in this beautiful video is ‘dishonest’, and that’s meaningful. Their relations with their customer are muddy, evasive and inadequate to our time. I think that company reputation is the first value, especially in the internet era. Their is getting worse more and more. Sadly to say, because we all early clients trusted in them and loved their device. Furthermore, their behaviors are getting so badly DISTRACTING…
Thank you! I do not mind a subscription at all. If you want you, pay for it and if you do not want to, keep the freebie. However, if I pay for a product because it has certain features, like 8 gb of cloud, from handwriting to typing, etc, I expect them to keep those features in the free model and add more features and upgrades for the expensive subscriptions. That is good for your customers and your business. What they have done is sell us a product, take all the nice features, so now we have an expensive notebook with somewhat cloud support.
This is like buying a phone, an android phone, and after 6 months they tell you, well now that you know what our product is capable of, you have to pay 7.99 dollars to keep making phone calls...
@@albamanzanaresboga690 exactly! They completely lost my support for any future devices. Luckily I already never use they're cloud services, I use RCU software for managing my files, but I am pissed off by their behavior.
Voya,I have had my remarkable and for the bast 2 month now and i have been trying to returning to get it fixed for 4 weeks of that time. And now I this mess! It makes really - really think about getting my money back. I love the device “WHEN IT IS WORKING”. I have purchased your daily planner for 2021 & 22. You have some great insites and information. I had no idea that remarkable was go to subscription model. This was a real gut punch and I fell like I am on a sinking ship (I hope NOT)! Please keep up the great work you are doing.
The idea of collaborating on a notebook is great. My colleague is already asking me about reMarkable when I do screen share but I told them it supports only single device and told them about this connect subscription plan and discourage them from buying. Again, reMarkable marketing head and more fairly, the CEO should step down.
Remarkable Video Voja. I could not agree more with you. The way Remarkale company act is strange. And paying for somethig that every other company is delivering!! And in the past days I read a ton of post about what have happened and not a single one was ok, no problem for me, that makes sense or any kind of agreeing what they've done. Also paying more on 13th for the same thing someone already had on 12th is insane! Everyone was so exited to see what RM3 would be and now all these is trashed.... P.S. They should have hired you as what you suggested would bring them to another level and earn them millions :D And now they are trying to survive - I consider there are going to be at this point!
Thanks for the clarification. Still disappointed in this plan but I am glad I decided to buy it before the 12th. I am really getting tired of this subscription business models. Its like we are just renting these devices.
I love writing on my RM2 but this is the last time I buy anything from them or recommend them to anyone else. As long as I stay grandfathered in with the current capabilities it's great for me. The minute it downgrades or breaks or whatever, I'm jumping ship. This is ridiculous. I hope they go out of business and get bought by someone who can use their hardware better.
Thank you for this update. Agree completely that their chosen model is ill considered. It’s been said before but they really don’t seem to have a customer experience department, and it sounds like they are just winging their roadmap since they cannot provide any solid answers. It’s also possible that they might not want to reveal certain aspects of a roadmap - if they have one - but still, that shouldn’t prevent them from providing something more concrete to your uncomplicated questions as those aspects should be set in stone (concrete, clay, mud … probably mud!) at the time of subscription launch.
Thanks so much for clarifying! Out of curiosity I logged into my account I created long ago for my Remarkable 1 (I no longer have any Remarkable device) and was able to active the free connect plan. But I don't plan on getting a new Remarkable device at these prices and with what their software offers now. They should have given existing users who have the Remarkable 1 registered to their account an opportunity to upgrade to the Remarkable 2 at the lower price point. Alternatively I could order the Remarkable 2 with the prepaid subscription of 3 months, cancel and re-register it with my old account. I definitely agree that if they had added better features for the subscription model, cut out the inflation and discount shenanigans it would have been acceptable. Your point about ensuring backup and transfer of files for non-subscription is excellent. None of my other e-ink tablets have that caveat. I have the Likebook Alita and the Kobo Elipsa and I can drag and drop files with _impunity_ . 😆 Sidenote: It occurred to me that if someone needs a replacement marker/folio they have to buy it at the inflated price. Just no.
I'm actually upset by this. My issue is that the features that made me buy it, beyond the best screen for writing on, are now to be paid for. And they don't all work properly. Disgusting behaviour. My bank did this, removed all the benefits of the account, then asked for a subscription to get them reinstated. My response: find another bank. I'm "lucky" as it's illegal for them to take the features away from me, but I'll berelying on the modders once my free connect subscription gets taken away. Or I'll have to find the cash to buy another device from another manufacturer.
The way I read their statements, as an existing user, is that I expect to have a free connect service as long as that service is supported for my device. So, when support for connect features on (in my case) rM2 is discontinued in, I hope, a few years (not months) time, then Ok, I'll consider whether I want to purchase a new rM device with a connect subscription. Anything other than that would be a scam to people like me who purchased their devices when subscription was not part of their business model and the connect features were included in the purchasing of the device. I'm not against subscription models when I choose them, not when they are imposed on me afterwards. On the other hand, I'm fine with reMarkable offering truly new features (like, say, collaboration on the same document) to paying connect subscribers and not to me (unless I start paying a subscription).
Well said. I hope there are certain customer protection laws not allowing them to do this to existing users, because I personally have lost most of the trust I had in remarkable.
I genuinely think if they try to discontinue free Connect for legacy users I would contact a lawyer and see if anyone would take it pro Bono and offer them 80% of the settlement although all I would care about is forcing them to reverse their policies
100% agree. When "I choose" to support a company I have no issue paying a subscription as long as I know it going in. I'm extremely brand loyal. However, since day 1 it has been very hard to ❤ Remarkable because they have terrible customer relations.
Great video, ty! Agree with your conclusions. Base plan/use of device should allow no cloud local usb only sync. The lack of that is a deal breaker for me. In fact it’s been a sore spot the 2 years I’ve been a user.
Thanks again for your insight. You and JB have helped me make sense of things. I get the subscription thing but it struck me after watching your videos...if you advertise your device as being for minimalists who want to be distraction free, how can you have a subscription based service? Your device, by design, has very little to it and the features it does have are fundamental to its function. So maybe they painted themselves into the corner with their own approach to technology and advertising. The only way they could work their way out of that corner is to create power options for those who want to step beyond the minimalist category. It's like inventing a pencil and then trying to get extra money by saying, "Starting tomorrow you can pay $8 per month and we will give you the graphite you need to write OR for free you can just have the wood casing."
You are correct. There are many ways in which this could have been done, while maintaining the distraction free mantra, and they had ample time to do it in. But they just did a horrible job at it. Whoever was in charge of this strategy and development did an absolutely abysmal job, and this is the result of it.
As an original purchaser of three of the ReMarkable 2 I just read through this new "agreement" they linked from an email they sent me. It basically says you are agreeing that ReMarkable may change this agreement at any time. So if you accept this new "agreement" you accept that they can require you to pay if they feel like it regardless of what the original purchase agreement explicitly stated. Great vids and content :) Edit: What I refer to as "agreement" is the wording in the claiming of the existing customer connect subscription.
I don't know of a single example of T&C that doesn't contain that clause. It's as standard as it gets. As for the other part of your comment, no, it doesn't mean that. Original functionality of the device that was advertised at the time of buying cannot be taken away. I mean, they can physically, but then they'll be in serious legal trouble, because European and Scandinavian laws don't allow companies to screw around with stuff like that.
@@MyDeepGuide "It's not personal it's just business" sums this up. Making money is no excuse for doing the wrong thing. There is nothing benign about their written intentions or their current actions. In situations like this picture the company involved as a person and ask yourself what you really think of this person standing in front of you based on their actions and intent toward you.
Absolutely. Business growth can have a healthy base or one that relies solely on greed. This is an example of how greed is shortsighted, self-centered and ultimately, destructive. But my personal opinion doesn't change my answer to your original question :) Regardless of liking or disliking a particular move, facts remain facts, and the fact is that changes to T&C are absolutely normal and are not suspicious or nefarious in it's nature. They are a necessary step to allow for change over time and flexibility over time. That being said, there are far more worrying clauses in their T&C than the one you focused on. I have contacted them, but have received reply that "it's been forwarded to their legal department to provide an answer", and we'll see if and how they reply to clarify some of these things.
Glad I looked into Remarkable more deeply (thank you my deep guide)! Remarkable sounds like an Apple wannabe company... which personally is two strikes against them. Lack of communication on early adoption hardware is the third strike. I will likely not be giving my money to Remarkable.
Thank you, as always your comments and contributions help users a lot and I hope that the company (Remarkable) also takes note. In summary, yes or yes, those of us who are already users accept this subscription (there is no option) and over time we will see what they decide. When they take away these features that I consider so basic and I can't get my writing out of the device then I will have to make a thought. In my case, I convinced my boss to buy it for him, when this happens and he doesn't want a subscription he will get mad at me, he just wants to write and send himself the notes by mail. If this can't be done, I'm done. Your ideas of making a backup in native format, reading png, importing templates, etc. all are really positive for this device. But if Remarkable makes it so simple, maybe I'll go back to my paper notebooks.
I'm currently trying to get rid of my rm2 as fast as possible. This is a red flag because the lack of features shows programmers are not innovating the software. I bought the RM2 as a way to SAVE money and be productive. Now I can't be productive AND I can't save money.
Thank you. You hit it right on the head. Hopefully, I have a reasonable amount of time before I have to decide if I want to begin paying to use the device. I like my Mobiscribe. Maybe they will put out a 10.2-inch device with at least the same functionality as their current Origin especially the SD card slot.
Thank you so much for your videos! I bought the RM2 yesterday, with "No Plan", and then, more because of anticipation, I watched all your videos about it. It was clear to me that the price of 650 Euro was not worth the device, but I just planned on writing on it at work and writing letters and printing them. Even though this device can mange these two thinks very well, I thought for what I get it is crazy but it was ''ok" for me then, but now I'm absolutely disgusted by this brand. It is a total scam! Then the warranty problem, I can't find if I can even return it without Connect. It's been send from Hong Kong, I'm in Germany. If I can return it, within how many days and would it be a free return or do I have to pay the return to Hong Kong? Oh my..... :(
This theyr reply: Hi Roberto, Thank you for reaching out to us and for your feedback. As an innovative tech company, we’re constantly improving our products and services. We want to make sure that as many people as possible can enjoy the benefits of our paper tablets, products, and services. Connect allows us to place the focus squarely on developing the software experience moving forward. We’ll enhance our current features and consistently add valuable new ones for our subscribers that will help them think better. Kind regards, Andreas
Any company that effortlessly uses the term 'moving forward' in their customer relations correspondence efforts are letting you know to your face "I am not interested or listening to anything you have to say and will likely never listen." Moving forward is a warning phrase. Cut and run when you hear that.
Working on bullet points for that, started before all of this madness, but I have to wait for my teaching obligations to end to have any time to do a bigger video like that.
Thank you for this video. I'm so disappointed in this change--I have a RM2 grandfathered in but I definitely would not have purchased it under the new model. I suspect they have shrunk their already niche market even more--I wonder if they can survive.
thanks for this. I feel like remarkable are/were people who wanted to build the device I'm looking for/need as a consumer, but got overtaken by Faustian venture capital and are now forced to ask me to rent the promise that it will one day become the thing I wanted... It feels like I'm watching tech innovators live out a cautionary tale, this is what happens if you take the VC loot.
I'd get an Oynx Boox. It's a better product, and they don't force subscriptions. You would think Remarkable is the best E Ink product ever made. I don't even think the iPad forces you to buy subscriptions. I can't imagine why someone would get a Remarkable at this point. I always thought part of the reason for its popularity was the original commercial they put out and heavily played on Facebook. I had been thinking about getting a Kindle for years, but I was waiting for color technology. The Remarkable commercial with the ability to write, convinced me to finally get an E Ink tablet, but I shopped around and found the Oynx Max2 which I thought was a far better tablet and could be used as an E Reader, too.
There's two scenarios you're missing about subscription models, and that's (1) people who have received a reMarkable as a gift (a frequent occurence in the business world; I've seen people buying them for their business partners), or (2) people who purchased it with the money from their grant/project (like me). That component of their sales is going to drop to practically zero. With the way research financing works now, I have no problem convincing my patron to cash out €647 at once, but I'd have a much bigger problem convincing them to cash out €100 every year or so. I know it's irrational, but it's true. And I surely wouldn't buy it if I had to pay for the subscription out of my pocket - I'd just go to a competitor who gives me a valuable thing for a fixed amount of money.
Thanks again for your efforts publicising the situation. I no longer see any point in ownership as I'm not prepared to invest my time, or trust my data to a platform that isn't really interested in supporting me (us), and may have the ground rules changed (negatively) at any time. The way RM has implemented the subscriptions is like a kick in the teeth. I have lost all interest and enthusiasm for the company. There are better alternatives.
This is so sad. For a few days on the beta program I could connect to my laptop screen and throw it via apple tv to the wall screen for the students to see. Then it started dropping the connection every minute. I did not buy this device to have to pay a monthly fee. I just want a device with multiple notebooks. Designing my own would have been good. This was such a promising project and it is not living up to the hype. I'm going to end up getting an iPad and pen and using that instead. I do hope they sort themselves out and listen to their users as the original idea was great.
Really glad the devices subscription is linked to your email/account. You could always sell your device and give the buyer access to your account info....removing any payment info from the account. I 100% refuse TO EVER pay for a subscription for the Remarkable. It's NOT what I bought into and should be illegal for companies to force earlier uses to do this. Other BIG issue is how if an early adopter wants to buy a RM3 they will end up paying a ton for the device since all the discounts are linked to the "Connect Purchasing" If they don't make it much more clear that they will guarantee free "connect" (all current features) will remain for the life of your device I am trying to sell my device. That being said, if they add new features I am OK (not thrilled) with them having a new sub tier that I would have to choose to purchase
So tbh I was going to order it for university today but saw they raised the prices and started a small research... you are telling me that without a subscription model I can't use even the Rm cloud for backup and not only that, I can't backup on my pc via the cable?! I can't convert text without paying? Sorry but that is just bad. A small company kicking out every customer it managed to get... over all is it worth it or just get another e-ink or even ipad?
I got this email today: We want to offer all our existing customers full free access to Connect. Our way to thank all of you for believing in us right from the start. For how long I get this?
Thank you for the video, detailed as usual. However, I do not agree with your statement that “users should not expect support till infinity”. This reduces the intensity of the situation. When we bought this device, everything (except from the terrible gdrive and dropbox support) was promised to us. It’s like buying a suit and then hear you have to pay a monthly fee to keep the pants, but not for the next 6 months so dont worry. If they add new features, sure. No new features? no (again i dont care about gdrive and dropbox). I understand that remarkable is not apple, thats why we already had to pay more than the h/w is worth. Many companies are not apple, but dont have subscription. If possible, I’d really appreciate if you could explain why existing users, who put up with many annoying thing remarkable has done so far, “have to” be ok with transferring to the subscription based at some point? Thank you
This was referring to if they want the new features that are a part of a new subscription. No company is obligated to issue new functionalities of a device after launch. They are only responsible of delivering on promised functionality on the day of sale, and support of that functionality. Anything beyond that is the company trying to entice users to their product over the competition, nothing more, nothing less. So yeah, as I said, existing features you'll get to keep for as long as their servers are active, that is your legal right. The rest is just pure market share competition and a business strategy of a company, how they plan to win over new customers and keep existing customers from migrating to a competitor.
Hey guys, I’m looking to buy the best note taking device out there in the market. Price isn’t a factor for me, which device would you guys recommend. I love note taking so that’s priority for me. Thanks!
I think the biggest sticking point with this new model is OCR. OCR feels like it is a basic and integral part of the note-taking experience for any device, so it feels very cheap to make it available only in the top Connect tier. I guess that is because their OCR is performed on their servers, not on the device. I can understand subscribing to Cloud storage and associated features because so many other companies do that everyday, including Google, Apple, Microsoft. But this service now makes what people consider basic features part of the subscription service.
The RM2 at least confirms I need a dedicated writing pad. That I am grateful for. When I need to upgrade to a new product in a couple of years I will compare with others. I doubt rm3 etc will be able to complete with the competition at that time. If they offer software or plug ins to third party for a price than that is fine but product features then that is a no no.
I guess legally, they have to keep offering the existing functionalities for another 24 months from the 12th for European customers. And I guess therefore they will do that for all customers. But we'll see.
I want connect to overlay other programs. I do CAD work for a living. I want to sketch on top of an open CAD design then take a snapshot of the screen while talking with others. All they have to do right now is have the connect program have a clear background. If many in a meeting could all sketch on the same CAD view, that would be better. Companies who make software want customers on a subscription to pay for software development. This is exactly what the consumers do not want to pay. I avoid subscriptions every place I can and that strongly influences my choice. To gain screen share I need a subscriptions. Searching for other options as a result. They also get you with the tips needing replaced. Double whammy to keep it going.
As an early adopter of the RM2 do you think i should click on the yes button of the new terms & conditions of the connect model? Thanks for your feedback
It has nothing to do with an early or a late adopter of a platform. It's simple, like for any other platform: if you want to use the cloud subscription based services, you have to accept the terms and conditions. If you don't accept them, you can't use the cloud subscription based services. So the best thing is, if you are concerned, to read through it and reach your own decision, as this will vary from a person to person.
@@MyDeepGuide thanks for your anwser. Sorry my question wasn’t clear. You mean that if i do not subscribe to the services i simply won’t have anymore the services like convert to text or send by email? It is really not clear what happens for the users pre « connect ».
No, I mean there isn't an option in which you can use the Remarkable with any subscription model without accepting the terms and conditions. It doesn't matter if it's pre or post connect or which subscription model is used, any of it requires compliance to the terms and conditions.
hello Voja, I bought a Remarkable some 3 weeks ago, because of the new SW update and before they made the announcement, and I should receive it this week. I could not find this information anywhere, so am I considered an "existing customer", as I bought it before they announced the new "scheme", or will I be a new customer, since I do not yet have a registered account with them. If I am considered a "new customer", I will probably not even bother receiving it.
I am not sure, you should contact them. Technically, of course that you are a customer before the cutoff point, so you should be included. If you already made an account during purchase, then you're set. If not, you should talk to them and let them clarify and sort it out, but yeah, you are most definitely an existing customer.
I received an email saying that since I ordered my RM2 before 12 Oct,I qualify for the lifetime Connect subscription even though I have not received my device. Still not sure if I am going to keep it, now.
I infer that the company is in need of cash, and in some kind of financial crisis. Possibly looking to sell a business that looks profitable. That explains the lack of care in everything except raising prices.
First two questions is empty response. Meaning it doesn’t mean much. At least from the third answer it good they are allowing you to buy a new device and use free account.
I have been watching your videos for the past month following the development of remarkable’s software updates etc. Now I’m not sure it’s worth it. What’s the next best option?
Suoernote A5X, Boox Note Air or Bookeen Notea. I have in-depth reviews on all of these device on my channel so you can check them out to familiarize with those devices and see which one would suit your needs best.
@@MyDeepGuide the Boox Note Air seems like the best option. However I watched your Papyr guide and really liked the infinity canvas idea. I do a lot of brainstorming through pen paper and then consolidate all my loose papers into single pages. I’m leaning towards Boox if it can pretty much do the same features. Thoughts?
Given their outrageous approach, I'm rather worried that they'll do everything they can to cancel what, without warning, has become our "free and complimentary subscription until further notice." But that's the theory. In fact, they will now probably see their sales drop drastically, which will make them reconsider their attitude and hopefully the value of a moral contract. One should never underestimate his customers.
They won't cancel it, as existing customers are legally entitled to the functionalities advertised and promised when purchasing the device. So they can't do that.
While you think/accept subscription models as standard/OK - I'm not. Yes there are quite a lot services which charge monthly. It makes it hard to see how money you spend for stuff. It is dangerous in my opinion and what happens when I'm e.g. loosing my Job/become ill? Also extremely often, subscription models are hillarious expensive. That's why i don't buy software and hardware which charge monthly. It would be ok for me to charge once for a new software version (major update and new functionalities, but not bug fixing). And it would be fine to charge for cloud service. But than, as you say, there has to be an alternative. Usb, Email, alternative Cloud storage.
Just got an email from Remarkable saying I need to accept their new terms and conditions in order to keep using the grandfathered in connect services. I am not doing this. Something tells me that once I do it, sometime in the near future they will have permission to charge me. Due to the way Remarkable handled this I am transitioning my note taking to my IPad Pro. I truly enjoyed using the Remarkable but won’t pay a nickel for services I get without extra charges on another device.
Yes, you need to accept the new T&C, but legally they can never force a charge on features and functionalities that were marketed the product does at the time of sale. So, you shouldn't worry about that. However, what is more likely is that at some point in the future, access to new functionalities will be restricted to paying plans. Existing functionality is yours to keep, because you purchased the device with those functionalities being marketed.
Maybe make a follow up on mobiscribe origin mobishare funktion? They updated - so maybe now it is funktioning for collaboration? (But true - 6.8 is not 10 inch - though used horizontaly somehow comparable)
They are being vague and obscure. They are clarifying the fact that the customer is last. If they said existing customers get 3 to 5 years then I may change. The subscription model they are offering is terrible. They have not said anything to suggest they have a successful future. This company is acting like a company from the '70s. Regarding new users other companies will offer better choices. Almost something I might expect from Sony. I wish Sony started to offer an eInk tablet rather than licensing to other companies. Come on Sony. Save us from the madness reMarkable is offering.
Fully agree with proposed features and subscription plans. I even would subscribe if I get on top a option to write in the windows remarkable app on my surface pro.
"They decided to do the most terrible thing..." No, they decided to do the laziest thing which is to make money off of that which was already free. I don't think that's a stretch or even mean, it's literally what they did with their subscription model. I don't think it's going to work out for them. The market is already tiny for this kind of machine, so I don't know why they would put this foot forward. Yeah, the device is a joy to use, but...if you have to pay for everything other people got previously for free and pay for it every month? Naw, people are just gonna go with a slightly less fancy hardware that has more functionality and no subscription model. That's just what happens. VHS won over Beta because of this same kind of business decision. History bears out you can only do this if you're a huge company or have users that will die on the titanic with you. Remarkable is neither right now.
Precisely. No idea why Voya is screaming surprise at this very predictable choice from venture capitalists to cannibalise this non-profitable company and squeeze every last penny out before it dies.
100% ok with Voja. RM2 is a good hardware platform (perhaps the best one). But software is absolutely missing this 2 core features that are : - complete transferring capabilties from and to pc (Mac, Windows and Linux) - backing-up where we like (and for example a PC). Sounds like evolutions are not planned but erratics. And so on marketing decisions and communication... Very disturbing...Starting to ask if I shouldn't consider another platform...
I tried sending a page to my email today 10/14/2021, and that functionality still worked. I initially thought that they would delete notebooks from my reMarkable 2, but I think I was wrong
Yes, it should be, although there are some users that report that they never did and everything was still working for them, so far. At the same time, you have users who reported that OCR recognition wouldn't work until they accepted the new T&C. So, it looks like the implementation of the transition to Connect is a mess.
My problem is, you buy the device for the hardware and the software. This just seems like you're paying the subscription, for the software. As an existing user, I should be happy that there is native Dropbox/Drive integration - but I'm not at all. I would rather go back and forget this ever happened - even though, in my eyes for existing users we're getting more essentially. I can't recommend this to new buyers at all, it's just not worth it. This reminds me of IFTTT's paid subscription - oh by the way, if you don't pay, your smart home will get rekt. Voja's right. Remarkable is dishonest.
Well, as the video and reply clearly states, existing users won't be losing features. That is not in question. The only thing in question is for how long will the existing users continue to get new features for free. Nothing else.
@@MyDeepGuide Nothing new they provide to us and if you miss the DDL to join their shit free subscription plan or just don’t agree with their new policy then a right is deprive from you.
Voya, thank you so much for your work! I sincerely believe you deserve to take a position of CEO of Remarkable. I use my Remarkable 2 for a half year and I loved this device. However, their subscription policy disappointed me completely given the increased price for the accessories. I have to buy my third!!! marker and now I have to pay $30 extra for it... Could you please comment could I return the device and receive a refund? I think this question concerns many of Remarkable users now
@@andreiandreev1220 yes, I am using it right now. I have this pen since I already have a Notes Air, and its original pen is horrible, and now I bought a Remarkable (to test it ...) without its pen. I'm using the Lamy with the Remarkable's tip .
i own and love a rm1. the impossibility to transfer files without cloud service has always be my main gripe...this goes against any users freedom... cloudservice should have been a free decision in the first place...freedom is creativity...handholding with shady business practices is not inspiring and certainly not innovative...why not give the customers free choice and be generous ... it would certainly acrue to success....peace...
To be clear: my policy does not allow any subscription model for devices. I own my devices and all apps. Update has a price, ok, but subscription is nothing to think of. I want to have control over my money and not that any company has control over my money. I did not drop Adobe and replace it with remarkable subscription. Luckily for me I use cloud and dropbox rarely so I won't have any issue with that. But anyway, subscription models for already existing features that work sometimes and sometimes not? Whazzap?!
@@MyDeepGuide Yes sorry I did not mean to suggest otherwise. Given the vague response you got I am not expecting to be happily surprised by long term access to new features. Too bad. I had actually begun to enjoy my device, despite it’s limitations, because the company seemed to be making an effort to bring out important improvements. I thought, well this seems like a good long-term investment if I can expect they will eventually fill in all the gaps. It is just too weird to accept that they want to now deal with me on the basis that they can alter the nature of the device that I purchased to fit their needs. Two days ago was a loyal user and promoter of the device. Now find myself looking at my options again. I love the concept of the hardware but what a chaotic business.
I'll use the offered features until they are no longer offered. If new features and offers do not provide what I need for my use case, I will find a device and a company that provides what I need. In the meantime, I only need to find the simplest, cheapest way to create backups of the most important documents on my device - probably back to paper printouts of emailed copies (booo). At least it cuts my eventual losses.
what jumps out is that they don't seem to have a sense of customer satisfaction as a main goal. Always seem to use words that protect themselves as oppose to ensuring the best customer experience with their product. They clarify but then confuse with caveats.
@@blitherithicus I can't argue with you on that one. It always come back to saying you want the best experience for your customers. Full stop. Why even get into discussion about future change now?
A subscription model was inevitable given that the product selling points rest heavily on cloud services. I do agree that the way they announce it is, in your words, dishonest. The way they shape the subs tiers and how they introduced them make me think it was a CFO/investors decision.
Well, if you consider the connectors in the folio electronics that justify a $20 increase and a simple EMR pen insides justifying $30 increase overnight, then sure. I don't.
I hope that this mess inspires the modding community. The Remarkable is an open platform, which in itself is ... remarkable. Companies like Apple bend over backwards to lock their devices down tight. The potential for the Remarkable hardware is enormous considering how open it is, yet it has relatively little developer interest unfortunately.
Well, that's because it's not a true open source platform. It just offers credentials information, which basically they need to provide because it's Linux underneath. So yeah, turning it into a true open source platform with a decent API would do wonders for it.
@@MyDeepGuide Not sure what you mean by that - it's a Linux OS with full root SSH access offered and supported (mentioned in official documentation) by Remarkable. They also publish a full development tool chain. I wouldn't expect them to fully open source a commercial platform, but it's open enough already to do a huge number of things.
Any news regarding the roadmap is nebulous because there is no roadmap - my guess is they are being pushed from pillar to post by their investors. I think I really dodged a bullet by avoiding this carcrash of a company.
I’m a student, don’t have the money to pay 8 a month, i got this device because i could have all my notebooks in one place, I can’t believe this is happening, hopefully we get unlimited free subscription:(
The more I think about it the more I believe that this was a panic move. They are losing money because as good of an experience as this is, it's for a niche user. From that small user base I don't think that they are making enough to keep up the back end so they had to do something quickly. This was not well thought out clearly and it's basically suicide when you weigh the other options that are out there.
I say if it is at all possible, all existing users should start backing up the firmware on their devices now if you want to retain the functionality you enjoy now. The future with the guys is not going to end well.
In my opinion it's the old Apple approach - take it or leave it. The promises they made are very vague and subject to sudden changes. Very sad. The rM2 isn't a perfect device. It still lacks a lot of functionalities. I hope that this unfair step is not neck breaking for the company that will end with bankruptcy and the shut down of all servers.
Subscriptions add up to a substantial recurring expense. I will minimize my subscriptions wherever I can. So will seek another solution if Remarkable dumps me into a subscription. Remarkable should give you all the current features and to fully sync with Google Drive and Drop Box. A free basic service not offering any type of backup is basically a demo mode. Subscriptions on end users is a grave mistake. Who will give a gift tied to a subscription? Especially when the competition is not embracing this model. Subscription services should target business sales.
I think this will kill off the remarkable in the near future. It is just not attractive enough in comparison. I will use it until they want me to subscribe and then I’ll buy something else. I guess I’m not the only one.
It's very disappointing to see how the subscription was rolled out by Remarkable. The removal of basic functions that forms the platform of this device when a "No plan" option is selected, makes this device less functional, making it a plain note taking device with poor e-book reader capabilities. I will not recommend this product to anyone not buy any future products from this company.
If you would ever feel the need for offering an My Deep Device with your My Deep Connect Subscription, I would immediately subscribe. In other words: I agree 100% with your analysis and your suggestion. Great video
😂 genius 😂
May need to reconsider the name, though. Not sure I could tell people at work how much money I spent on My Deep Device with a straight face...
I have no issue with the subcsription model either.
What would have made sense was to offer everything we had initially for free and offer a subscription model with extra tools. I am happy to pay for new features such as new templates, new tools, new shapes, new brushes etc.
Exactly how they should have done it!
Yep this is how it should have been.
This shouldn't affect email/handwriting recognition
etc.
You should be hired by remarkable! Thank you for taking the time and always bring some fair and real information!
I vote for Voya to become the CEO of reMarkable. At a minimum put him on the board of directors. I'm not joking. This is what reMarkable needs to do in order to survive.
I support This Notion....
Voja would get an ulcer very soon and have to resign.
I'd consider coming in as a consultant, for a fixed amount of hours. Stepping into a mess like this? No thanks, I'd rather play with my kittens, make music, take walks, listen to books and take photos of the night sky :)
@@MyDeepGuide aahahahha
Thanks for sharing the response from remarkable support. I’m pleased the current customer stuff is with the account, not the device. Yay.
Thanks a lot for this!
They should hire you as CEO :)
You got a big shout out from Morning Coach regarding this! So glad I canceled my reMarkable 2 pre-order way back when!
I just saw the vid :) He's awesome, and that thumbnail, oh wow ❤️
I love it how 27 minutes is a short video for you :-)
Thanks Voya. Great analysis. Am mostly commenting for the algorithm ;)
Thanks for the clarification. Still disappointed in this plan but I am glad I decided to buy it before the 12th. I am really getting tired of this subscription business models. Its like we are just renting these devices.
Thank you for the work you do Voya - my latest video I believe YOU are the answer, thanks brother
You make great sense! Lost customer good will is very hard to regain.
Sidenote: It occurred to me that if someone needs a replacement marker/folio they have to buy it at the inflated price.
When Microsoft introduced a subscription model for Office, they didn't retroactively hobble earlier versions of, say Word.
Agree with pretty much everything you have said. My partner thinks that this is an end of life move.
reMarkable needs a communication strategy that reflects the company's strategy. And it needs to be good and transparent.
Thank you! I totally agree with you!
This video is spot on, they should have listened to you!
Great vids and content :)
Edit: What I refer to as "agreement" is the wording in the claiming of the existing customer connect subscription.
Fantastic summary. Voja, please make your next job as VP of Brand Strategy at reMarkable.
Oh my..... :(
This theyr reply: Hi Roberto,
Thank you for reaching out to us and for your feedback.
As empty and meaningless as ever. Thank you for sharing.
Then please develop amazing new features and when you're ready and beyond beta, THEN bind these features to a subscription plan.
Any company that effortlessly uses the term 'moving forward' in their customer relations correspondence efforts are letting you know to your face "I am not interested or listening to anything you have to say and will likely never listen." Moving forward is a warning phrase. Cut and run when you hear that.
A big 10-4 on the backup issue. Nothing worse than having 2 years of notes and no backup. That’s just insane.
Would be great to have a video from you about all the devices that are currently in the making, what you expect etc. in comparison.
No reMarkable 3 for me. When my rm2 doesn't work I'm change to something else....
Another feature they could have done is selected saving to the cloud. To make it usable within a company.
Other BIG issue is how if an early adopter wants to buy a RM3 they will end up paying a ton for the device since all the discounts are linked to the "Connect Purchasing"
If they don't make it much more clear that they will guarantee free "connect" (all current features) will remain for the life of your device I am trying to sell my device.
You really know your stuff. Thank you.
I got this email today: We want to offer all our existing customers full free access to Connect. Our way to thank all of you for believing in us right from the start.
For how long I get this?
Thank you for this!
That makes sense, thanks.
True, but the Screen Sharing is local and has absolutely nothing to do with their cloud or servers, yet, they strip that away as well. Awful behavior.
Thank you again for great video full of useful information. Which tablet would you recommend to replace the R2?
Onyx note air
@@requeteque1970 Thank you
The RM2 at least confirms I need a dedicated writing pad.
"Dysfunctional", good word, Voja. It is actually also good summary for RM, "remarkable dysfunctional". I'm glad I'm out of RM.
I completely agree with everything you said in this video. Thank you!
That's ok too :) Thank you for sharing.
But software is absolutely missing this 2 core features that are :
- complete transferring capabilties from and to pc (Mac, Windows and Linux)
- backing-up where we like (and for example a PC).
Just received an email from Remarkable: they’re telling me I have to accept new terms and conditions. Is it necessary? Thanks in advance.
Yes, it should be, although there are some users that report that they never did and everything was still working for them, so far. At the same time, you have users who reported that OCR recognition wouldn't work until they accepted the new T&C. So, it looks like the implementation of the transition to Connect is a mess.
@@MyDeepGuide Thanks! 😉
As an existing customer, will I still be able to -for example- send pages per E-Mail with the free subscription?
Yes.
Great points
If I lose features I’ll start looking for another device. Except that I’d mainly miss the mobile app function.
Well, as the video and reply clearly states, existing users won't be losing features. That is not in question. The only thing in question is for how long will the existing users continue to get new features for free. Nothing else.
@@MyDeepGuide I thought it was also about how long current free subscription, as in current Connect features, will be honored.
No, it's about for how long new features will be given to existing users for free. Existing features are here to stay.
@@MyDeepGuide Oh...
I think this question concerns many of Remarkable users now
If it's not in their 30 day return / refund policy, then no, I don't think that you can do that.
I would recommend the Lamy pen ... I love it.
@@plimajr However does it work with Remarkable?
@@andreiandreev1220 yes, I am using it right now. I have this pen since I already have a Notes Air, and its original pen is horrible, and now I bought a Remarkable (to test it ...) without its pen. I'm using the Lamy with the Remarkable's tip .
@@plimajr thank you so much for the advice! This is the best solution :)
i own and love a rm1. the impossibility to transfer files without cloud service has always be my main gripe...this goes against any users freedom... cloudservice should have been a free decision in the first place...freedom is creativity...handholding with shady business practices is not inspiring and certainly not innovative...why not give the customers free choice and be generous ... it would certainly acrue to success....peace...
Whazzap?!
Given the imprecise langauge, it is prudent to assume that existing users will be cut off sooner rather than later.
Yes, but that is only in regards to new updates and functionalities. Present ones will remain.
It's not a clarification if the net result of the communication is the same fog that existed before.
@@blitherithicus I can't argue with you on that one. It always come back to saying you want the best experience for your customers. Full stop. Why even get into discussion about future change now?
1:50 I really hope they will calcify these issues indeed :D
They should fire their marketing team. I indeed feel they are dishonest in this case.
A subscription model was inevitable given that the product selling points rest heavily on cloud services. I do agree that the way they announce it is, in your words, dishonest. The way they shape the subs tiers and how they introduced them make me think it was a CFO/investors decision.
There are electronic elements scarcity and price increase.
Other companies increase the selling prices
Well, if you consider the connectors in the folio electronics that justify a $20 increase and a simple EMR pen insides justifying $30 increase overnight, then sure. I don't.
reMarkable has suddenly become ‘not so remarkable’!
I’m a student, don’t have the money to pay 8 a month, i got this device because i could have all my notebooks in one place, I can’t believe this is happening, hopefully we get unlimited free subscription:(
Yes, we do, as explained in the video.
It could well be that the company is just too small and they are currently in a real dilemma.
I say if it is at all possible, all existing users should start backing up the firmware on their devices now if you want to retain the functionality you enjoy now. The future with the guys is not going to end well.
That's not going to help as 2.10 is already configured for subscriptions.
Plus you'll be missing other feature, bug fixes and security patches.
