    I am thinking it is about time I did this to my 16.3 ottb… He came with every issue a horse could (got him for free - and he is a wicked nice horse). He’s gotten way better the last six months but he learned how to fight and win too many times. Thinking this could save me a lot of effort and make him a lot safer.

    Wanna attempt this with one of my horses, just curious on your rope. I have a couple of poly ropes with plastic honda on it, I’m just worried about rope burns?

    • @HorsemanshipAsAnArt
      @HorsemanshipAsAnArt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah it might burn them. this time of year is best, the long hair protect the skin.

    I understood that laying a horse down was always a last resort. It’s interesting to see it done very early in training.

    • @HorsemanshipAsAnArt
      @HorsemanshipAsAnArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes a lot of people do use it as a last resort, I figure there is no reason to let it get to that.

    Working on a 3 yr old mare thats pretty defensive and redistant to going down. Seems like she can stand on 3 legs all day. What do you do when they just spread out and just stand there forever?

    • @HorsemanshipAsAnArt
      @HorsemanshipAsAnArt  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I walk back towed the left hip of the horse until I am nearly behind them and play out my rope as far as I can. The farther away you are the more torque you put on the horse but the more you put on yourself as well. just grit down and wait, sometimes it takes a while but the more times you let them win the harder it gets on them. Also make sure you have that leg sucked up as tight against the belly as you can get it. Some horses it helps to have a helper bent the horses head slightly to the side opposite to the lifted leg. If alone you can simply tuck the lead rope into the leg rope but dont tie solid, that's a wreck. Good luck.

    • @cowhorses2
      @cowhorses2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @adavis1989 finally got her, took about two hours for her to give in but I wasn't trying to force it. She's really bothered about people behind her so really wasn't wanting to let down with me back towards the hip. Thinking if I had a longer rope and was further away maybe she would've gave in a little sooner. Need to do it a few more times, she didn't stay down very long today and never really relaxed. Thanks for the input, I appreciate your reply!

    Wondering if this would be of value for my OTTB? He turns 15 this year and I have had him 11 years.
    For me, been through a lot of horses, this one is by far the one that has no bottom. He is rideable but flashes like a stallion.

    Sir, In watching this video for the 3783rd time I noticed something that I'm very curious about. Does the sideline aid in getting a horse to depart with a rear leg first?

    • @HorsemanshipAsAnArt
      @HorsemanshipAsAnArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Very perceptive. I don't point everything out because its fun for me to get comments like this. It absolutely does and the smart ones learn fast, you can really feel it on the first ride as well.

    Am looking for a single rig light saddle. Any recommendations

    • @HorsemanshipAsAnArt
      @HorsemanshipAsAnArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For a single rig make sure it is either at 3/4 or 5/8, center fires don't really fit modern horses very well. Don't forget you can always jerk the back cinch off your saddle and ride it single. As far as brand names I don't really know of any factory made saddles that make a single rig.

    Bret I tried this approach with a fairly tame 3 yr old I’m starting. He turns to run into me, blows up and about gets me tagged all up in a lariat. I also can’t get my rope to stay tight or slid as easy as it looks with you. I’ll keep trying

    It's sort of similar to teaching down/stay to a bird dog puppy, although dogs are "put down" more often. It puts them in a submissive position, keeps them there for a bit, then lets them up. They learn that being in a submissive position isn't the end of the world, it's OK.
    BTW, try keeping a smile on your face when doing this; it really does help, I think.

    • @HorsemanshipAsAnArt
      @HorsemanshipAsAnArt  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Im not much of a hand with dogs, bird dogs in particular but I agree, they learn being in a compromised position is not all that bad.

    I have seen people hurt horses legs and shoulders laying them down , nylon ropes will take the hair off one ,to each his own

    • @HorsemanshipAsAnArt
      @HorsemanshipAsAnArt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have never seen one hurt nor hurt one myself laying them down but I suppose you can bruise a knee if your not careful, I believe I mention this in the video. Physically the shoulder can not be injured the way I lay one down. Nylon or any other rope can knock a little hair off, I think I talked about that as well. In the end I would rather loose a little of the horses hair than a little of mine. Thanks for the comment.

    I seem to have issues with older problem horses back east wanting to face up usually putting me right in front of them as they then jump around, or go to spinning on me.... any thoughts would be appreciated. Great info on your steps. Thanks.

      I just keep running behind them. A guy can also get a long lead rope and run it around the right hand side behind the rump and keep the horse pulled away. Like I said I just keep trotting behind them.

    Knew a man , he would do this perhaps to much ,one day rain swollen fast water creek and the bank caved off, they fell in, he let go swam out, the horse somehow got caught up in his rope, the horse had learned not to fight it , he said he saw the horse float to the top twice neither time swimming, recovered the saddle down stream some days later , freak accident but I never trained again making the horse submit, going against his life preserving instincts, it's just wrong in my book this was a big stout good minded buckskin roped and used a bunch , never went back around that place
    To each his own

    Had a number problem horses brought to me , going back thru them many were forced overbearing round pen work , the horse can never win, was trying to find a way to survive, and some person finding a new way in themselves for ultimate control, feeling mighty powerful over that horse ,took it all way to far
    99 percent of the rest of the horse problem was just plain the trainer also
    I would highly encourage you to show folks who want to train, show the horses responses , how the horse is trying to figure out what it is the trainer wants
    Unknowing folks can get in a big wreck quick , seen to much over the years , I worry over the Horse. I wish All safety and well being , always
