Here is a personal experience: "Two hours into the valley Shanta went into a prairie dog hole with both front legs up to herchest and rolled onto her left side. I could not get kicked free fast
enough and was trapped with my left leg under her. The heavy Trina Weber buckaroo stirrup kept my foot and leg from breaking, but when she struggled to her feet I was pitched forward, my spur shank went over the stirrup leather and my foot stayed in the stirrup so I was face down and locked in place by the spur. I had a rein in my hand. I just talked to her and she stood there while I stretched for all I was worth to get the shank of the spur free. Always kick free when you even have a hint your horse is going to go down. I lay there admiring God’s creation while Shanta and Soldier nuzzled me. Then I got up and beat my left spur back into shape with two rocks."

I learned the jacket buttons by getting mine hooked over the horn. Thankfully it didn't get me wrecked, it just tore out the bottom button holes (back in the Lee Rider jacket days).... Also, I grew up on the CA coastal range and the rope strap you described @3:30 is what we had. Now I am set up more like our wife's rig as I'm not riding the rough string. Either way, you saddle your own and make your own choices.

When I was a teenager I bought a saddle that had a slit in the rope strap. It was to long and one day I hooked a spur in the loop just as I dailied. Made for some interesting riding there for a few minates. Thankfully I was on a solid horse. Now days I ride my rope tied hard and fast through the gullet. Its made for a night latch a few times. Have a good night

I rode a lot of young horses in my younger days. The difference is that a young horse gets scared out of ignorance. A rank horse is just flat mean. I didn’t start ridin a young horse with a rope till I’d done some ground work with him , and I used a inner tube like you showed. I also rode in boots a little big with powder in em. But during works or on the wagon I’d wear my regular size. Nothin worse than wearing blisters on your heels , tromping around helping the ground crew.

I'm going to add wearing jeans/pants too big around the waist without a belt.
I learned the hard way got front waistband hung over the horn on a horse that broke in two. Couldn't bail off even if I needed too. Thank god he quit soon after.

I grew up riding my Quarter horse learning from books and 4-H. My folks finally bought a saddle for me from an old cowboy friend of theirs. I loved that saddle. I don’t recall how many years I rode in it but others suggested it was time to let it go when they saw I was holding it together with baking twine and duct tape. I pulled logs by dallying a rope around the horn. I did the same pulling sleds for the kids over the snow. I have a western saddle now but ride the endurance saddle or my Australian saddle neither of which have horns. I have come off the western but never off the other two saddles, lol. I chased moms cows with my QH and that saddle but never got to rodeo, just 4-H gaming. Did quite well with that. Aw, the good old days.

I’ll sheepishly admit to hanging my jacket on a saddle horn. For years since I’ve only used the top two buttons when mounted. However I take it one step further by elongating the button slits about a eighth of an inch or so on the bottom half of my jacket. The buttons still work more or less but jerk open regularly.
