This is wonderful. Thank you so much for posting this. I was aware of Oscar Shumsky from a former violin teach and friend of mine, Cline Otey, who once taught with Shumsky at Peabody. During my lessons many years later in the early 90s, he would often make reference to Shumsky, whom he clearly respected greatly. But up until today, I had only heard him play the Mozart concertos on a CD I acquired around that same time. With that in mind, I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to see and hear this. Shumsky's bow arm technique mirrors precisely what Mr Otey taught me, with a style which readily produces a very full, strong, and powerful tone, which is enhanced by a fluid movement in the right hand and fingers - particularly the index finger - which is able to press down on the bow, to produce more volume. Up until my studies with Mr Otey, I had been taught to use the more pronated Russian bow hold. But after learning the Franco-Belgian model, I never looked back. Shumsky demonstrates that particular technique and bow hold with absolute perfection here.
Goodness, I've never seen him play and this is a complete revelation - although I knew he sounded great, it's really interesting to see how he does it.

Many thanks for sharing... a rare treat!.... always one of my favourite violinists/musicians.... such wonderful and unique sound....he had a humility in his playing lacking in so many other greats. Would be amazing if the film and sound could be perfectly in sync... I find it just a bit frustrating that it's slightly out....thanks again.

He has a such a rich way of sustaining the connection to the string through bow/string changes and slides... simply incredible.
