saw them play the UK festival Bloodstock in 2014, wow, best moment of my life. I was down in the front and just stood there with my mouth open all the way through their headline set, best band i have ever seen live.
Ruben Buijs, every now and then they get back together and play shows. I believe they are getting back together briefly this year (2017) to play a couple of shows. Emperor was an extremely influential band back in the day and still is. Haven't released an album since 2001.

The drummer, bassist and guitarist (Trym, Secthdamon and Samoth) were in a death metal band together called Zyklon while Ihsahn, the singer, is still doing music on his own (and it's very, very good). The keyboard player is in a band called Leprous.
You know what? That Opeth comparison is actually kind of on point, more than I thought initially. They're not all that alike musically, but there's an undercurrent of stellar musicianship and great songwriting, mixing elements from different genres of music, a lot more melodic complexity than most bands in the metal genre. But yeah, Emperor is the titan of their genre. Head and shoulders above the rest.

You should react to Ihsahn's (vocalist/guitarist from Emperor) solo stuff. It is a lot different than this stuff, I personally like it better. Mass Darkness is a good song choice!
Emperor reunite every once in a while to play European festivals, but they are officially split up. You may like their last two albums, IX Equillibrium and Prometheus, more than everything prior to those. Ihsahn's solo stuff is also very good but very different to Emperor.
hi Ruben Buijs, your reactions to this live performance were almost the same as mine. although i know these guys since the middle '90s, i'm not very pleased with the live dual vocals in this song. but anyway - if you are interested in emperor, you should first check out 'anthems to the welken at dusk', and then 'in the nightside eclipse'. especially these two albums are - in my humble opinion - some kind of quintessence of this band. where 'anthems...' is a very complex majesty with many layers and subtleties, 'in the nightside eclipse' is more raw and straightforward. --- if i were to recommend a video... well, here on youtube, someone made a hybrid of the visuals of 'faust' (1926 silent movie, i suppose) and emperors 'alsvartr the oath' plus 'ye entrancemperium', and the result is quite interesting.
You should check out "Leprous - Contaminate Me (Live at Rockefeller Music Hall)." The vocalist/guitarist from Emperor (Ihsahn) does guest vocals on that song, and this particular live performance of the song is fantastic.
Yeah definitely, Third Law is also really great from that show. Honestly, Leprous is just really damned good in general, and Ruben would be doing himself a great favor by checking out any of their work.

Ruben, have you checked out any Bloodbath yet? I would recommend Iseous, Ways to the Grave, Like Fire - just about anything from Resurrection Through Carnage and The Fathomless Mastery, really. Their Wacken concert is pretty legendary, and I think is a pretty fair representation of the album's sound.

Nobody comes close to Emperor at their peak, the band captured everything that is great about black metal.
The most amazing thing is that they were something like 19 years old when composing this masterpiece

Pagnah I travelled from Australia in 2014 for Wacken and saw them live. Deadset, the highlight of the festival for me!!
