Norway has alot of good metal bands though. And they tend to veer towards the experimental. Bands like Leprous, Madder Mortem and post black metal like Ulver. Compared to Swedish metal its abit more grandiose and symphonic I feel. You don't hear alot of those extravagant chromatic melodies in swedish metal.

So, 'Crazy Norwegian' here (and a Dimmu-fan).
The Orchestra is called KORK, and is our equivalent of your BBC Radio Orchestra, and the choir is called Schola Cantorum; both are also on the album this track/concert is from. On past albums, Dimmu has incorporated orchestral / symphony music as well, some of it arranged and composed by members of the band.
Another Norwegian blackmetal band, Satyricon, has done a similar thing where they did a show at the National Opera in Oslo, featuring the National Opera Choir. Do recommend. :)

Dimmu Borgir are one of the bands that sit right in my sweet spot, musically speaking. Yes, its metal as balls, obviously, but compositionally speaking, they give respect and space to classical and baroque elements, their tunes have movements, darkly majestic, epic movements, like a classical piece. They understand how to write music that has a rich, deep texture, with moments that soar, moments that build to crescendo finishes that smash you off your feet. In a period where so many artists and bands were writing one dimensional groove based, low effort trash, these guys were summoning the souls of dead composers to collaborate with, in a darkened cellar in the frozen northlands. This precise song exemplifies everything about the flavour of metal I prefer.

Norway has a tendency to use their orchestras for stuff that seems really out of the ordinary. Our main gvt funded TV station (NRK) has its own symphony orchestra (called Kringkastingsorkesteret (broadcast orchestra) or often just KORK, and they're involved with a lot of live acts that are filmed in Norway. It's always cool when they join in. I imagine being an artist here and being asked "hey, you want to do a concert with a freaking state funded amazing orchestra? No charge, friend, we got you covered." feels pretty great.
The only reason stuff like this happens is due to our gvt funded orchestra, cause a production like this is prohibitatively expensive for pretty much every artist working today, inside and outside of Norway. You just can't use orchestras like this on the regular. It's really awesome when it happens, and this song was bad-ass. I don't even like Dimmu Borgir.
Not drum-based, but you can check out 'Aurora - It Happened Quiet' live from Nidarosdommen for another example of orchestras showing up to make things amazing. I dare you not to cry.

Hey Andrew, so happy you're amazed by the intersection off classical and black metal influences. I think another great example is this rendition of Die By My Hand by Satyricon, with the Royal Norse Opera Chorus th-cam.com/video/bLe6nN9F46w/w-d-xo.html. A lot of black metal, especially those within the second wave of Norwegian Black Metal (inc. the big three: Dimmu Borgir, Emperor and Satyricon) used a lot of synth sounds to emulate the sounds that the choir vocalises here.
What I find very interesting is that Satyricon was invited by the Chorus to participate in a special live event, which sounded great. Both parties were very excited for this project. There is a lot of mutual respect visible during this concert. In other songs there are parts where you can see the conductor just 'give up' and hand the choir over to the analogue atomic clock named Frost beating on the drums.

They bring up eclectic Norwegian vocalist Agnete Kjolsrud from Djerv and Animal Alpha and she completely holds her own even with the 150 other musicians blaring their wares. It's amazing. And for a different side of symphonic metal, there are a ton of tracks by Nightwish you might want to check out. Any live version of Ghost Love Score from a set with Floor Jansen as singer is a suitable intro to the band. And there's a wonderful drumcam video from behind their current drummer, Kai Hahto which is fun to see him barely breaking a sweat through most of it and whipping out some insane fills at the end.

So Norway, Sweden, general scandanavia is known for "Black metal" which is a subgenre of metal that is very fast and deals with alot of occult subject matter. The music is dark, melodic, orchestral and has a very unique blend of classical/choir music that is mixed with the darkest heaviest most "evil" sounding genre that exists and this is what you get. Dimmu Borgir is not considered pure black metal as they are a little too commercial and the genre is very anti-commercialism , but they do musically fit the note.

In the Swedish Nationalencyklopedia Metal is recognized as a genre that is quite complex and features influences from classical music.
Basically the connection between metal and western art music is officially recognized by the state :) . I feel like the connection isnt often made outside of Scandinavia where its seen mostly as that genre Beavis and Butthead listens too.

The drummer here is Daray - he's good, but the drummer on the original studio version, Nicholas Barker is a drumming beast. Check out the studio version of "Kings of the Carnival Creation" by Dimmu Borgir, or his groove on "Summer Dying Fast" from the "Principle of Evil Made Flesh" by Cradle of Filth to show his versatility.
