77 or 78 when I started, but the white box set was very hard to understand. My friends did not play miniature war games at that time so we did not have an understanding of what's going on. One of our friends brothers came back to town on summer break from collage. He had the basic box set, that's when we finally had a real understanding of what to do. Then at Christmas 79 (I think) got some advance dd books but didn't understand they were 2 different games. Still have 12 great friends that I play the game with now. We play from 3.5 to white-box games now and still love it!
That’s awesome :)
I started playing AD&D back in ‘78 and still have my books for that edition. Still enjoy it :)
Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.
Just a minor note. This pdf is not from the original prints but rather from the 2013 D&D Premium Original Fantasy RPG reprint set.
Thanks for that detail. You can definitely tell with the revised cover art.

Great video. Wish my friends wanted to play the old stuff
The older editions are so streamlined a grandchild could play :)
I think we're all that old now.
